A long way to go - nothing to be done but fix it… Blog post at oldmansailing.com/1,500-miles-with-a-broken-rudder. Apologies - after arriving, I discovered I had been pronouncing Carriacou incorrectly all this time. It should be "Kerri-coo".
Running before a gale with a SeaBrake drogue and Aries Vane Gear self-steering in Rival 32 Samsara
Просмотров 1,4 тыс.7 месяцев назад
This was my first proper test of the SeaBrake. The wind peaked at 40kts but the sea never really developed. The drogue held the boat very comfortably for 20 hours and was remarkably easy to recover on a sheet winch. Next time I’ll try it with the Aries disconnected and the helm lashed amidships - and the drogue lines evened up (I did this later, but - having no secondary winches, I needed to us...

Sorry the Sailing brothers have a Rival 34.
super Merci... Je viens de finir votre livre "le vieille homme hisse la voile" magnifique j'ai beaucoup aimé...
Merci. auriez-vous la gentillesse de laisser un avis sur Amazon ?
What is your Favorite Beer ?
Lovely. A shame your tripod has a cold.
Thought it was, looks very similar to
What material was the surface?
A 12 volt chest freezer is very inexpensive, these days. I'd yank out any troublesome water tanks and replace them with p.e.t. used soda bottles and have very clean water and no leaks. The batteries need an isolation switch.
Rival 32 is that same boat as The sailing brothers?
Theirs is a 34
So I am not the only one that doesn't like to go to the doctor. Last time was in 2006 and never went back after that. I call it healthy life old school style hehe and I love it. Great video indeed and good information too. I hope lots will follow the advice. Fair winds... lovely boat by the way... just doing the boat tour earlier. 😁
Two comments: 1) safety harnesses - why on earth use a 2 meter strop? I use jackstays as follows: cockpit p and s; cockpit to mast p and s: singlemast to foredeck. Each of the jackstays have a strop permanently attached, of a length which allows me to move but short enough that there is no way I can go overboard. Also, the jackstays are loose, NOT tight. A drum-tight jackstay will put an enormous strain on its attachment points. 2) Lying on the cockpit floor is what looks like the paddle from a Windpilot. Plans to replace the Aries? I’ve used both and find the Windpilot lighter and easier to trim.
Well what a pleasant surprise. RUclips has finally recommended a sailing channel rather than a lifestyle sailing couple!
I owned Blue Velvet, a Twister for 10 years. Now upgraded to a Rustler 36, but still miss the Twister.
I only follow solo sailors now due to that.
When you out of cellphone range you get the weather you get. Wise man words 😊
I find it also happens when in cellphone range as well. Being within cellphone range appears to make no difference on the weather at all. 🙂
Quit playin’ with yer dingy!
What sail plan did you have here John? You're on a beam reach judging by the flag, but a following sea??
Scrap of headsail - nothing else. Wind on the quarter.
Hi! I have on my R 31 Walkerbay 8 PVC dinghy. Its a bit difficult to arrange it under the boom and maybe my next dinghy will be inflatable. What make is your dinghy? Thanks! Jordan.
3D TwinAir - apparently the lightest in the world. Now on my second - the first lasted five years and then the moulding housing the rowlocks broke (not likely if you use an outboard).
Courage John ! I do my antifouling paint each year : great moment . It will be in march ! Races after .
Wow, just 3 months x 6 cups per day of herbal tea cures spinal cancer !!! Who’d have thought?
Great to see John, we're looking into buying a Seabrake too for our 35ft steel boat. Is the bridle connected to a towing rope or directly to chain which is connected to the drogue?
Starting at the back: SeaBrake. 2.5M 10mm chain.30m non-stretch 14mm line. S/S thimbles at both ends. 35cm 8mm chain in a plastic pipe (this is to go in the stemmed fitting when I use it for stopping the boat fore-reaching when hove-to. 8m 14mm non-stretch line - this was 10m before I gave up on trying to do my own splicing. The other part of the bridle is 10m of 14mm non-stretch. If I have to change from hove-to to running before, I will tie a rolling hitch onto the 30m rope and make fast in the cockpit, then bring the 8m part of the bridle back to the aft cleat. Next, tie the other bridle to the shackle at the top of the 8mm chain, make fast to the other aft cleat and cast off the line with the rolling hitch. Tip: tie a loop of floating line to the tail end of the drogue so you can recover it backwards.
Lovely day for a sail.
John, I couldn’t comment on your latest video with the drogue. Interested in how you tied the bridal end to the rest of the line / sheet.
One leg of the bridle is permanently chained the leading line (the chain led through a reinforced plastic hose) because this goes through the stemhead fitting in a tight curve when the boat is hove to (without the drogue she keeps on moving forward). When using it astern, I simply tie the other leg to the thimble for the leading line, reasoning that if it chafes through, it wouldn’t be a disaster, I could just winch it in and attach another line. The two ends of the bridle are fastened to the stern cleats and led out through the side fairleads. I thought these might chafe and I would need to install new ones on the aft rail but it turns out they are so close to the cleats, there’s no movement at all.
@@oldmansailing many thanks 🙏
Nice. I read about streaming warps in Don Steeet's book and had absolutely no clue what he was talking about.... thanks!
Wow
Thank you John I totally agree with you, funny enough I am a 61 year old sailor and I am following your way of life Great videos and a great way of putting it out there Again I thank you 🙏 Fair winds to you always ⛵️
Tremendous John. U r a winner. Well done xx
I want to try this. Are you using a floating line? or something else?
My old Copper Coat lasted 7 1/2 years before it turned to moon craters. Took 15 days of wet sanding to re-move it back to the FIBREGLASS. I then put on three layers of two-part Apoxsee as the foundation, each time washing it clean with water. Then I put on four coats of copper coat and other than a few colour differences. It went extremely well with plenty of stirring. It’s now been on for nearly 2 years, and I can still just wipe off with a Scotch-Brite sponge and it looks great. Both the original copper coat and the current copper coat are as tough as nails.
Loving your book on audible,
Thank you. Did you know there is now an Old Man Sailing Podcast?
That looks so nice. Nothing like working on those lats and enjoying the view.
So... all of this is to highlight the fact that you got the fridge installed and working and you can enjoy a cold beer now.
Yup, that’s about it…
Great video having read your books most interesting tour.
All conventional vegetable produce that most people eat is full of poison particularly Round Up because Monsanto/Bayer created “Round Up Ready” seeds which allows farmers to spray Round Up on the food you eat. Eat organic only and never GMO. Eat like your grand parents ate…they ate organic foods grown in nutrient rich soil not soil stripped.
Just watched you climb your mast in Lymington.
… and get stuck half way - forgot which way the line goes round the descender!
@@oldmansailing I was watching as i might be single handed next year and getting up the mast by yourself is one of those necessary skills. So i was learning from you.
I’m reading “Old Man Sailing” and enjoying it immensely.
Thank you, Bill. If you haven’t done so already, would you like to leave it a review?
@@oldmansailing I’ll do so today John!
Im reading the next offering of yours. John I am curious about the nutritional supplements you mentioned on your web page. I retired at 56 and immediately became crippled by arthritis. I had to sell my sailboat as I can’t move around her safely. I am not a candidate for knee replacement so anything that might get me back on the water interests me.
Hi Bill, please email me at john@oldmansailing.com.
A great book.
I’m currently reading your book about sailing during the lockdown. Since the book mentions RUclips, I figured I should find a video about your boat so I could get an idea of what I’m reading about. I enjoy your pragmatic thought process. You’ve made this complicated a bit more simple for yourself.
Hi John, is weight (chain or tire) added to the line?
No weight or drogue - although you could let a tyre slide down it.
Just ordered your first book, look forawrd to reading it!
Did you get tired easily 😮
No, the dinghy is so light. I've now sold the electric outboard.
I'm wondering if RUclips have ghosted your channel John. My comment here is the only one so could that be possible?
Plus, the pharmaceutical companies can’t patent a plant. So, in effect, you can become your own doctor using natural “medicines.” A great reference to Jesus in Luke 4:23 where he is quoted saying “Physician, heal thyself.” Thanks John for the information.
Hi John interesting video, I'm in my 70s and I had osteoarthritis for many years then I discovered Cumin and tumeric in capsule form , after about 3 months of taking them all my joints seem to have healed. I go trekking, mountain biking, and now sailing. I never take pain killers or antibiotics, I grow my own vegetables and fruit. You really have hit the nail on the head.
I was wondering if you could tell me what kind of herbal tea your friend was taking?
Graviola - six cups a day. I have one a day and like to have it cold.
Nice to see someone doing it the old way. Everyone uses socks theses days. Bought a boat with one once, used it once, too much mucking around. Put the kite up and down behind the headsail, easy.
Just finished your book John, great read thankyou for sharing your voyage. All the best in your future adventures
Hi, great video upload, how has the trolling motor performed upto recently? Also may I ask which app you are using? Thank you.
I think he said the app was Navionics
Today is Christmas Day and my daughter gave me your book, Old Man Sailing, as a gift. I'm enjoying your writing style and your sailing story, which prompted a search on RUclips for your channel. Prior to today I hadn't heard about you so this is a treat. Thank you for shaing your travels.
I just discovered your blog and I am very glad I did. I am a 65 year old sailor who have been feeling I should think about hanging up my boots ! But not now ! Thanks John .
