Revisiting 1988 🏀 Statis Pro Basketball Game Play
Returning to a game that I haven't played in over 40 years. A solitaire game play with the 1988-89 edition (1987-88 season) of Statis Pro Basketball takes place within this video. The game instructions seem pretty simple, so I hope to have a fun time with this classic tabletop hoops simulation. My hometown Portland Trail Blazers (53-29) take on the Cleveland Cavaliers (42-40). 🏀

ECS Pro Basketball Game Play 🏀 Using "Enhanced" Cards!

After about two weeks of scanning and refining the original game components for the ECS Basketball Game, it is time to get the custom player cards, team sheets and dual-purpose play cards on the tabletop court! A recent inquiry was made on the "Tabletop Basketball Board Games" Facebook page regarding "What is ECS Pro Basketball?" The inquiry was answered by a group member named Tom. Later, Tom answered my personal request for a (scanned) copy of this obscure game to share with the tabletop hoops community. ECS Pro Basketball, developed in Los Angeles in 1968, is a fast action card (FAC), player card, ...

It's still "Wayne's Game," and I'll be utilizing the 50th anniversary edition of the player and team cards and rebound charts. A ...

Action! PC Basketball Homebrews 🏀 You Can Coach USA "Dream Teams"
Love this game. Grew up playing solo and playing with friends during high school.
Great comment. It is a smooth flowing game that I remember was fun with two players. Have a good one. 🏀
Loved the Oscar Goldman reference from the 6 Million Dollar Man!
Loved the Six Million Dollar Man. Even had the Steve Austin action figure. Loved the Bionic Woman, too. Fun fact: Lindsey Wagner's parents used to live next door to my childhood home in Portland, Oregon.
While I generally prefer Base-10 SPBB for solo play, its definitely nice to see some Statis Pro basketball getting some play time on YT.
I appreciate the comments. I don't know the origins of a Base-8 system - also used in other Statis Pro games - as it adds nothing to the game play (except occasional confusion). 🙂 Seriously, the game flow is good in this game, and I know game players enjoy the "ball movement" and "pass to choice" features as well. A classic. 🏀
Like what you did with the setup…and some corner rounder company is missing an opportunity by not sponsoring your videos! I only play seasons from Jordan and prior - using Base 8 and a helper vice FACs - but this game really checks the boxes for me. Blocks, steals, defense, reasonable footprint, point guard importance (assist ratings), and an easily implementable fatigue system. Combine this with Phil Graham freely releasing all his seasons, more than 10 players per team, the ability to easily create your own sets, its reasonable ability to play college teams, and the freely available ATR to decrease footprint further for those so inclined…this game is higher on my list than several of the more “popular” games being sold today.
Thanks, Larry. The accessibility of Phil Graham's seasons make this an instant favorite among many game players. Ease of play and a small footprint are among the strengths of this game. And, yes, where are those corner rounding endorsements? I've just finished corner rounding a whole bunch of my Hoops Tabletop Basketball cards, including some 28- and 30-team leagues. That's hard work, lol. 🙂
Am I able to access the files you are talking about with seasons? I'm bought seasons in the past from Phil Graham. Thank you
Yes, Alan, you can go to the website with the name of tabletop-sports.com/ and then go to "Downloads" in the upper left corner next to "Home" and "Articles." Then find the "Category" label, which features a drop-down menu. Follow that menu to "BASKETBALL - Statis Pro Basketball." Then scroll down to the last downloads on the page and look for multiple downloads of Phil Graham's cards. There's NCAA, NBA and ABA and even the Fast Action Cards. Great donation by Phil to the tabletop hoops community. Have a good one. 🏀
Thank you Rod.
It was about time I got this game out. It was easy to play, even after a long hiatus from the game. Have a good one. 🏀
So many memories come back while I watched this. I grew up on statis pro basketball and football. I think i have every season except for some early 2000 seasons. I need to get back on the ball and do some recorded games. Good video as always!
Thanks, Jason. I bet you're the type of guy with a bunch of those remarkable Statis Pro sports game boxes in your closet or on a bookshelf. These were always referred to as "bookshelf" games, as cool to play as they were to look at. Have a good one. 🏀
I rather play the base 8 then the new Base 10
I'd be interested in what the plusses and minuses are between Base-8 and Base-10. Curious. Have a good one. 🏀
Such a Fun game. The new sets are still available
Good point. I have all of Phil Graham's files but have so many other games that I enjoy more than Statis Pro. However, this is a simple and well put together simulation. Have a good one. 🏀
Rod, what is that phone app you use for the score?
Great question. It's actually an Excel spreadsheet that someone created at my Facebook page called "Tabletop Basketball Board Games." Got to the files and look for a file created by Darren Smith. The file has a name of "B-Ball Auto Scoresheet_v.201015 0828.xlsm." Good luck. 🏀
You keep stats for your games? Do you have a season stats worksheet or excel? Been looking to find a program that keeps my season stats. Any info is appreciated

The file has a name of "B-Ball Auto Scoresheet_v.201015 0828.xlsm." Unfortunately, it does not keep season stats. Have a good one. 🏀
I like it... I like it a lot! Good job on the video and breakdown. As always, you surpass the bar!
Hi Jason. I'm having fun with this ECS but might need to take a Hoops or Crunch Time break after all of the scanning of these ECS cards. They're looking pretty good though, I think, and with Gustaw's help on the play cards, we may have improved the ECS gaming experience. Note: I updated/fixed one of Gustaw's play cards today. Just replaced "Page 82" of that game parts PDF, that's all. Have a good one. 🏀
Any theories why the majority of these replays are blowouts? Sucks the fun out of them.
I disagree. I've had plenty of close games in the past two years, including games decided on last second shots and overtime games. You might have to stop dwelling on the blowouts.
Please don't take it personally. This phenomenon is more widespread than you may think..
Look forward to finishing the game but wanted to thank you in advance for your time & effort to preserve this game and share it with others. I appreciate those who help keep these games alive whether they be for actual play or even just historical/nostalgic reasons. I find it fascinating to see the different approaches that were tried and am grateful to you for sharing your passion - and “discoveries” - with the rest of us!
Hi Larry. Whenever there's a "new-old" game available that consists of player cards, charts, dice and/or play cards (FACs), I have a tendency to go after it! ECS Basketball has so many cool parts and, as you can see, has a bit of PTG, Computer Basketball and even the APBA Pro Basketball Game in it. It's not perfect, but the amount of work that went into designing this game was immense. It's been a pleasure to unearth a game that few had ever heard about and, hopefully, it won't be the last time we see something like this. Cheers! 🏀
That's amazing. If I had a printer I'd go for it. I was a big fan of strato-matic baseball growing up in the 60's but I never got into bb.
Thanks for watching, Mikey Young! Photo copies at the print shop can cost me more than the game is actually worth, and I'm still finalizing some of the original play cards and those created by Gustaw. ECS Basketball continues to be a fun project and adventure. I like tabletop baseball games (like APBA), too, but I spend too much time on my hoops channel to contribute anything to my "Rod's Tabletop Hardball" channel, which only has about two videos. Take care. 🏀
Yet another pathetic performance by a Rick Barry-led team in a Rod Hess video. #Uncanny
Gene Tor-MOE-len.
Tormohlen in German is "door of the mill."
@@redfanrod Tormohlen played like a big door -- a turnstile on defense who hit anything that moved. (His nickname of Bumper was apropos.) Was one of the better pivots in the ABL, where he and Bridges were Kansas City Steers teammates before they joined the Hawks.
@@RayManzarekRocks Love the nickname of "Bumper." Thanks for sharing the history. 🏀
Inexplicably, the Warriors regained possession after a missed shot and Hawks rebound (33:31).
I "corrected" it with the word "Oops!" :-) Seriously, I got off track when I told another story during game play and it's hard to backtrack your plays in PTG (no FACs to check back on). I think the Warriors needed the break as they just didn't have it on this day. 🏀
@@redfanrod No harm, no foul.
Has the makings of a great game but the substitution calculations are a show stopper. A helper might be good for this. Love the cards. Game probably translates to computer well. Mathematics could be rearranged to flip team lineups. Thanks for presenting! You have a knack for simplifying and explaining game mechanics. Would like to see a game implement strategy of some sort. There are advantages to bigger or quicker lineups, or working the ball inside or playing team defense. Fascinating to go through these various game mechanics, though. I will say that I don't think we've landed on an ideal way to simulate basketball in this hobby. But there's lots to take from this game.
Thanks for the comments. The creator of ECS was definitely on the right track. Having FACs in 1968 was quite an innovation. The substitution method is slowing and similar to old APBA Basketball, where you re-calculate the settings on EVERY substitution. ECS tried to rectify re-writing the stat "ranges" for shots, rebounds, assists and fouls with the individual range cards but there are still more calculations to be made. The game plays pretty well overall if you don't make subs too often. Take care. 🏀
Looking forward to the upload! Thanks, Rod.
I love Statis Pro! However I have made revisions to the game. For example, the forced rest on consult z makes absolutely no sense. I ignore that. I have played over one thousand games, mostly solitaire since 1989 and have played many exciting, realistic games. It has brought me great pleasure and has been a fun and rewarding hobby.
I entirely concur with the "rest cards." They just disrupt the flow of the game, especially in this earliest iteration of Statis Pro. Be ready to check out my next "ECS Basketball" game play that's still in the works. I removed the "injury/fatigue" as it is a pain to change out the line-up in that game as all stat cards must be updated with each substitution. I think it's awesome that you're such a huge Statis Pro fan. I just acquired the 1987-88 season and full game and want to get it on the table as soon as I can. So many games to play, lol. Cheers! 🏀
Very nice collection of NBA Guides!
Thanks, man. I just pulled off a trade for the 1969-70 and 1968-69 NBA Guides, so the collection continues. As you can tell, I love these old stat books. Take care. 🏀
Best basketball game I've seen. Would have to look at all play by play data to currently rate teams but completely doable.
Thanks for the input, Scott. This game appears to have been well thought out. I hope it flows well because the engineering and thought processes that went into this game were extensive. 🏀
Great voice and content Rod. I have a run of those guides and like you, I think they are the coolest guides out there. Good job !!
Thanks for the praise, domingopacheco! Those NBA and ABA guides are always a great reference tool, even during the age of the internet. I'm a huge fan of old reference and biographical materials regarding the NBA, ABA and other rogue professional leagues (ABL, EPBL). These reference books pair nicely with my passion for classic (and modern) tabletop hoops games. Have a good one. 🏀
Very cool collection of guides! Those were so fun to read over & over as a kid…
I cherish these guides, Larry. So many great stats and still a great reference tool! Like you, I spent endless hours (for years) checking on how many times Wilt scored more than 50 points in a game and how many times he had more than 40 rebounds in a game. Wilt still dominates this book! Have a good one. 🏀
Does anyone recall T. H. E. Basketball game, circa 1970? My buddy played a mini season w/full stats. I seem to remember the game came in a thick package. No individual cards were in the set.
I love the input, Ken Castro. I hope that somebody can bring T.H.E. Basketball to the surface, just like we did with ECS Pro Basketball, which I will be uploading to my Tabletop Basketball Board Games page on Facebook. Coming soon! Take care. 🏀
@redfanrod T.H.E. Football was pretty phenomenal; would love to see it.
@@redfanrod Thank you Rod. I recall him telling me how much he enjoyed it; would love to find a copy of it for you to review. Looking forward to what's in store. Thanks.
It never ends, The variety of Table Top Basketball Games available, Creativity is an endless road for sure. Great Find Rod !!
I see some potential with this game, bruinsfan! Cutting out cards as I type this response. Looking forward to playing this game that - as you may have noticed - has a unique approach to ranking the players on the floor with its "cross reference" formulas. Should be a fun project. I'll provide an update once I get into a game. Cheers! 🏀
Man I do the same thing on eBay, good job. Those Fastbooks are cool and they look like they resemble Baseball's, Who's Who, which I think were great because they were my first look at players that I'd never saw before that weren't carded in Topps (big deal for a 14 yr. old kid).
You're right, Mike. The NBA-ABA Factbooks parallel with those "Who's Who" books for baseball. I've still got a couple of those, too! Basically, I love devouring basketball and baseball statistics and seeing how these player perform on the "cardboard court" or field. I still prefer these paper representations of stats when compared to the internet, although the internet is faster and more convenient. Have a good weekend! 🏀
How do you know at what position in the deck to insert each time card, for the dice version ?
Great question. I'm not a huge fan of inserting time cards in an FAC deck, so I used a cardboard time clock (sliding a time marker) that was included with the "no dice" version. It works okay. I've got to pick up this game again. Have a good one.
So cool! Thanks for sharing.
Glad you liked it, Jim. More Hoops game plays coming this Fall.

You are quite the video editor, I extend my compliments to you! Remember to be careful when running backstage with Kenny not to fall into the Christmas tree...
Thanks for the complements, Mike. I consider myself a work in progress as far as video editing is concerned. I do enjoy it, though! Kenny better not push me into the tree over Christmas, although I won't have the same "bam-thunk" sound that Shaq made, lol! Have a good one. 🏀
You’ve got the job Rod, Looking forward to watching you on TNT broadcast’s this fall. Great Job !!!

A lot of fun, David. Visited the Hall, followed by more camping in Salem, MA and then Boston for a few days and Fenway Park. It was a great trip! My wife's a great travel planner. 🏀
They should have given you a Trail Blazers clip! :)
Good call, Larry. I had three options for the video challenge. I could have answered three trivia questions and there was another topic I forgot. I instantly jumped at the "highlights challenge" because I though it would be most fun. Have a good one! "Brandon Roy for three... bingo!" 🏀
Great video! And what memories! My younger brother and I received the game as a Christmas present in 1972. The game had player cards for the 1971-72 season, and the owners threw in the 1970-71 season as a bonus. Our game had a spinner as the activator - they went to the FACs the following year, I believe, which was a great improvement. Oh, the battles my brother would get in over which result the spinner landed on! They also improved the rebound ratings, going from using the player's rebound average per game (which, of course, shorted the reserves) to a rebounds per minute played formula. Your game box is in incredible condition!
Thanks for the praise, replaybb! I've still got plenty to learn about the NBPA/Statis Pro era of basketball games. I hope to experience the "newer" edition in a trade I received a month ago - the 1988 edition with the Larry Bird-like image on the box. My copy is in pretty good shape. No caving in and just the typical wear on the edges of the box. I love the game box and the game board, which can be used for other games like Bank Shot Basketball. The original game flow is decent, and I certainly know more about the game rules since this video was shot (I was a true rookie at the game). As you say, I'm sure there were plenty of arguments about where the spinner finally landed, lol! Have a good one. 🏀
This is a bit of a random comment (sorry), but watching this now and just saw that Jamila Wideman came into the game. I have to confess I wasn't aware of Wideman as a basketball player, but I do remember that one of my favorite authors, John Edgar Wideman, named a daughter Jamila. And sure enough, this Jamila Wideman is Mr. Wideman's daughter. Very cool. Now I'm just sorry I wasn't aware of her during her WNBA career. Odd little facts one can learn watching a Rod's Tabletop Hoops video. :)
Thanks for the knowledge bomb, Barry. I had no idea who Jamila Wideman was, either, so I'm glad you provided some background on this 1997 WNBA player's lineage. Cheers! 🏀
Note: (I tried both the links to both Delphi and Etsy and neither worked - please advise). Hey thanks for another nice video Rod. The beauty of this game to me, as far as I can tell is the ease of play due to not having to refer to a set of boards, which speaks volumes. I enjoyed the brief history at the beginning; I didn’t know any of that before. As always, your broadcast makes me feel like I have paid for front row seats. Take care. P.S I got to get me a pool table for the basement (even if it doesn’t work), it would make walking down the steps to it make me feel like I am entering an Arena.
Hi Mike. Thanks for enjoying the show and thanks for inspecting my broken internet links. The good old "copy and paste" obviously didn't translate to the links. Both have been repaired. And, yes, the ease of play makes this fun for me. I've added my own version of "assists," which occur when a player either converts a missed shot to a made shot with his ballhandling skills. I even award an assist when the "bh" person doesn't allow the made shot to be a miss. Example: a ballhandler with a "D" still gets an assist when the indicated card allows a "better than F" result. That way, even terrible passers get an assist once in awhile. As for "F" ballhandlers, they're not like to get assists anyway. I also try to award a "defensive stop" to defensive players who prevent a two point or three point shot from going in. It's kind of my version of a "blocked shot." Interestingly enough, this WNBA game didn't have many great defenders, but I was surprised that even Lisa Leslie didn't stop anyone. Also, I enjoy the small footprint for Crunch Time and I now enjoy games where a time clock is not needed. Take care. 🏀
Note No. 1: I just realized that Gustaw's PACE ratings probably refer to each quarter of play and not each half of play. Therefore, in this case, the +2 and +1 PACE ratings, totaling +3, should have been applied to 10 minutes of game play and not for the full 20 minute half of play. In other words, I was probably about +3 cards short in the first half and another +3 cards in the second half. I don't consider this a big deal overall, as my stats - especially field goal and three point field goal attempts per team - were reasonably accurate throughout this game. As mentioned in the video, the WNBA utilized two halves (w/penalty beginning at the 7th team foul) from 1997 thru 2005. The WNBA switched to four quarters of play in 2006 (w/penalty beginning on the 5th team foul). I hope you enjoy the full game play. Note No. 2: Links to the "free cards" on Delphi and Bradley Logan's Etsy link have been repaired. 🏀
You're right, the PACE applies each quarter (or half period in this case). Anyway, no big deal.
I had a great time playing with these WNBA teams. @gustawr
Very fun to watch Rod! I like the looks of the cards too. Might have to give this game a whirl!
Glad you enjoyed it, sportacuss. This is a very simple game with a lot of cool checks for "ballhanding" and "defense" and I appreciate the way it just flows. This game came to me by surprise and I consider it the coolest "new" game for me in 2024! 🏀 Look for my full game replay with some WNBA action soon. 🏀
Notes: This is a reflection of my game pick-up over the past 9-12 months. I even forgot one of my more recent editions - CB2K Basketball by Andy Vecellio, where I still have an NCAA Super Centers Tournament to complete. Of course, my all-time favorites are Hoops Tabletop Pro Basketball and Jim Mickey's Fast Break (1974-1987). Have a good day, folks. 🏀
Even in retirement, there aren’t enough hours in the day to play all of our games. I have to quit watching RUclips videos lol.
Good points, lol. So many games, so little time. I even forgot to mention CB2K on my recent pick-ups list. Another great game. 🏀

Seems like a good trade, Seems like 1981 or 1982 seasons.
Thanks for the viewpoint. The Alley Oop! game is based on 82-83 NCAA for the ACC. The Statis Pro Basketball game is for the 87-88 NBA season. I'm happy with both additions to my collection of tabletop hoops games. 🏀
Two great guys making a great trade. Can’t beat that!👍
Love the comment, John! Kevin is a great guy who truly loves the tabletop sports hobby, which includes baseball and basketball games. Cheers! 🏀
I am a master card corner cutter, and I carry it in a holster. If you place an uncut card in front of me, I will pick it up, cut the corners off, put the cutter back in the holster and have the card put back in place before you get a chance to say, "Stop it".
Great comments, Mike. I need a corner cutter holster like yours! Have a good one. 🏀
Just started watching, but I have to comment ... Rod, I too, love the rounded corners! Love that little magical device!! It's a good addiction, haha. Now, I will return to 1971 (super matchup) and enjoy your presentation.
You're a man of great taste, Dusty. Corner cutters are highly underrated. Take care. 🏀
