As for Wednesday well this season painful and this humbling was a real real low Danny Wilson was very fortunate to still be in a job after this. He could Sir Dave Richards the then Wednesday chairman for being so loyal. As soon as he left to be chairman of the Premier League Wilson was on borrowed time and a loss to Watford meant the end of the road.

To write about your Jewishness and Jewish life as well as sex is to be courageous. Yes, Roth was a stand-up comic, emphasis on “stand-up”which means you stand up for who you are. In Roth’s case, he was born and brought up a Jew, a writer and a highly sexual man. His way of standing up for himself was to own it all as he saw it. “Portnoy’s Complaint” is one of the funniest books of all time. You miss it at your peril.

I haven't really read anything by Roth until I started Nemesis (2010) a short novel of his. I have heard lots about him. I am not in his target audience per se, but I liked what he said about fiction inventing events and inventing consciousness because consciousness is an invention. I agree that great writers create powerful experiences for readers. Maybe I'll pick up American pastoral or came back to Roth.

As a writer of non-fiction Remnick is Roth's equal; indeed, I'd argue he is even better. Two of his best books: The Devil Problem and Reporting, superb examples of his work from The New Yorker, the magazine he has edited for some years now, taking over from the equally brilliant TinaBrown. That he, his editors, those behind the scenes- and of course the writers- manage to produce a magazine of such quality EVERY WEEK strikes as miraculous.

I couldn’t agree more with Roth when he expresses his frustration when he’s referred to as a “Jewish writer”. He has so captured the American experience, ethos, Zeitgeist, etc of the second half of the 20th century, that he’s simply unrivaled as THE great American writer…..who just happens to be Jewish. But given that Bellow would be my second favorite, there’s obviously something to the Jewish “thing”, but it’s tough to pin down just exactly what that thing is. But it’s fun to analyze, think about. As an Irish Catholic boy from Detroit, I’ve simply accepted Leon Uris’ theory that there’s very definitely a consanguinity between we Irish & Jews, based on things like Diaspora, love of literature, conversation and a very similar sense of humor. Uris was the first “Jewish”(American) writer I fell in love with upon reading his novel Trinity at the age of 17, and I recall pondering the mystery at that time of how the hell a Jewish American writer was able to so completely capture the Irish culture, history, language/conversation, rhythm, etc.

One of the best American authors!
