Running An Auto Bottom Carton Backwards - Bobst Alpina 110
Просмотров 7 тыс.2 года назад
Another carton company sent us these cartons to run because they couldn’t get it to run. The creasing was an absolute nightmare! It had a lot of cut creases which was extremely deep, causing the cartons to literally brick together. The cut creasing was unnecessary. There’s also a flap that needed to be folded over and glued. We ran this carton 2 different times. The first time I chose to run it...
Crash Lock Auto Bottom Carton w/ Handle - Bobst Alpina 110 A3 Matic

Auto Bottom w/ Glued Hanger - Bobst Folder Gluer

Auto bottom with glued hanger. These can be difficult to fold if entering the default measurements for the combifold in the CUBE. In this situation, I added 20mm to the flap length, which results in the backfold shaft raising an extra 2 increments. Then I added the ‘clips’ to the hooks. As you can see in the video, the hooks tips are actually missing the back of the carton by several millimeter...

      Hi. Good question. I’m using the main gauge on the left (longest panel) as the feed gauge set to one board thickness. The gauge on the right is just there to keep the pile square in the feeder and it’s raised up several carton thicknesses. I also added a brake by the right feed gauge to keep the carton from wanting to pull out early on the right side.

    Hello ! Do you ever had the problem that at a certain speed (350m+) the boxes in the delivery stopped moving and there was a stop? The HHS system often displays "Tracking distance too small" or "Box distance too small". However, it does not help me to drive at high speeds (400m+) but the distance between the boxes is too large so that I can also drive at 200m but with a smaller distance . example: straight line. Length control by nozzle on the points where the gauge is in the insert. I used google translate so dont judge me if there are some mistakes !

    Question: how do/would you fold the glued hanger (we call it a eurolock, why i dont know they just call it that way) if it is on the front of the box, lets say its a box with a Z fold interieur and normal bottom and top. And the hanger is really small like 3x2 cm (1.18x0.70 inch) with the hole being almost the same size of the panel.

    • @masterfolder3155
      @masterfolder3155 2 года назад

      Yeah. We have a carton that we run kind of like what you’re talking about. I would pocket fold the euro lock. That way the pocket folder forces it to fold on the crease. You’ll need a rail underneath the carton so that when the flap hits the pocket fold, there’s good support underneath. I never had any luck doing those with folding hooks. It’s hard to get the flap to fold on the crease, especially with the hole there. It usually wants to fold off the crease and in the middle of the hole instead. If you do try using a folding hook, you’ll want a hook length that is extremely short. Perhaps 1-2 mm. Just enough to grab the flap. Then use something as a ‘stop’ behind the hook so that the hook is restricted and only allowed to travel a certain amount. When the hook hits the stop, it will cause the flap to fold at the crease. It’s almost like making a pocket folder out of a folding hook and a bar. Like I say though, I’ve never had too much luck with consistency with this method. I much prefer the pocket fold method instead. It’s a lot more positive. I’ll try and get a video for you when we run it next. It might be a couple months, as we don’t run that one a lot. Watch this video that I made a while ago: ruclips.net/video/VSsR93tO4F8/видео.html I know it’s not exactly what you’re talking about and the euro lock is a lot bigger here, but it’s the same concept. You’ll just be doing it on a much smaller scale. You can make a small little pocket folder with some scrap plexiglass and metal.

      @@masterfolder3155 And what if you dont have a pocket fold... i made something myself from srap but it is more like a upside down V shape thing with air coming from under and a bar on top of the carton to get some short of timing on the crease... i runs fine but sometimes misses or folds one the hole....

  • @generix47
    @generix47 2 года назад

    The timed air is great, but how would you have stacked the boxes if the timed air was not an option in your machine ? Just wondering.

    • @masterfolder3155
      @masterfolder3155 2 года назад

      To be honest, I don’t know if I would’ve been able to run it without the timed air. The panel was so narrow/short that the cartons would’ve just dove into the back of the cartons in the delivery and caused a hook point. Sometimes, I can add a hold down of some sort, but that wasn’t an option with this carton. Any kind of physical restriction would’ve made the panel alignment impossible. The only thing that gave me a chance was the upper trombone belt pushing/holding that panel forward until it got under the nip rollers. This was a carton that was sent to us from another company who couldn’t get it to run on their gluers. If we could’ve, we would’ve designed it differently. Someone in another comment said to understack this carton. I don’t think they understand what was going on here. That wasn’t even close to an option.

    • @generix47
      @generix47 2 года назад

      @@masterfolder3155 Understacking will not work in this case i think, or it may work but you will be trying to get it to work for a long time and i dont know how much time you get to get something running, but not that much i guess. But we have several of this kind of small boxes on our Alpine 110 without timed air... and yes it runs, but dont ask me how... the box is not up to spec (> 45 mm long) for an Alpine 110 and it is not a easy close (dont know the english terms for a box with a edged of gluepanel /_ or a box with a rounded off edge (_of the gluepanel so you have to put the gluepanel into panel 4) Like i said i get it to run, but only when i (almost) overlap the boxes untill the transfer/stacking position and if i reduce the distance in the matic between the photocell and the stackingbelts creating a extra stoppingtime of some short, like a fall and stop.... But it still sucks haha, not to mention it will sometimes go wrong and you lose cartons....

    There are some modifications that could be done top the design of the carton to make it less difficult to run. For example the glue flap should be round in the leading edge and at 15 degrees. Also the second score should fold slightly forward as stated in the Bobst ABC manual. The distance between cartons is lost production, you can increases productivity by simply running the cartons closer together. Stacking could be help with a small painting brush rather than using air. I have been a folder gluer instructor since 2004 and have been working on folder gluers for 34 years.

    • @masterfolder3155
      @masterfolder3155 2 года назад

      You are definitely right. This carton was sent to us from another company that couldn’t run it. We didn’t have any control over the design. It was a small run. I just wanted to get it through. The problem with using a brush with this carton is that there’s no way to push/pull the left panel forward for alignment and using a brush would only pull the left panel back even more. Using the upper trombone belt to help assist driving forward the left panel wouldn’t work because the lower the upper trombone belt, the more the carton wants to dive into the hook point. Also, the left panel was so short that there was an extreme hook point for stacking. Only way was to push it down intermittently with timed air. I agree, the design was simply stupid. It’s no wonder they couldn’t run it and sent it somewhere else. Yeah! We’ve ran cartons with angled creases for helping alignment. I know what you’re talking about in the ABC book. I’ve been operating since 2004. Strictly Bobst.
