Street photography is creepy. It's the one, single genre of photography I can think of where one takes images without their subjects' knowing and consent. I'm migrating from Adobe to Affinity for obvious reasons and was looking for a raw editor that fits my needs more than the Affinity one does. I'm having an absolute blast discovering how elegant of a tool Rawtherapee is! Thank you so much for showing me around! Only thing I've missed (maybe I wasn't attentive or maybe you thought this was too advanced for a beginner tutorial) was saving/loading/copying processing profiles so you can add the same adjustments to a batch of images that you probably took in the same location. Also applying LUT's and using the Rawtherapee Film Simulation collection as a creative starting point for (some) photographers is quite a cool feature. Batch editing, LUT's and profiles could be an idea for a future video? I'm sure people would appreciate and I'm sure I'm missing some stuff that I yet have to learn or bad habits that I have to unlearn. Again, I find that this tutorial covered almost everything that I needed to know with the basic handling and file management and I'm very thankful! All the best to you!

    Not sure if anyone else has made the point that if using a camera with 2 slots, and one card is set to copy images as they are taken on the main card, then deleting an image to placate an concerned subject need not mean losing the image :) That said... I agree that we don't want it to get to that situation in the first place, I don't want to upset anyone,. But it's getting ever harder not to draw unwanted attention taking photos in public even when not even pointing a camera at someone, they often want to know what you're doing as though it's suspicious behaviour... Strangely it seems different for mobile phones / security cameras where pretty much everyone is being constantly photographed, and perhaps if one were to set up a big old plate camera and get beneath a dark cape that would not be viewed so defensively either, so maybe it's just a social bias against mid-range cameras which could be a paparazzi reflex or just a sense that people want to own their own images, I'm sure there are many reasons that people object. But either way, it's just something we have to deal with as photographers. Nice one, as ever sir! :)

    • @1kwords
      @1kwords 8 дней назад

      Excellent point about the two-card solution, I thought of this myself. I have it set to jpegs on one card and raws on the other, so if I'm ever forced to delete an image, I will still be left with the raw, which is actually great!

    • @henrysteadman963

      Keenly awaiting my copy from the eBay' :) I've only had two lenses where I've felt the need to have a second 'back-up' copy of a loved optic in case I dropped, lost, wore out my first... the first was an old lit Lins, the Olympus 38mm f1.8 Zuiko made for their half-frame 35mm cameras in the 70s I think... it's like converting your modern mirrorless camera into a Lomo of steroids without sacrificing wide open sharpness! I'd be happy to send you through some raw files in case you're curious and even to send you my second copy now the anxiety has passed to test it yourself. The other is the Minolta PF 58mm f1.4 mkII, which is certainly not super sharp wide open but again has SO much character that all is forgiven... apparently it's more like 61mm in actual focal length and so despite only being a 1.4 gives very similar blur degree as the much more expensive and lauded 58mm f1.2. I suspect you'll have tried this one already though as it's much more common than the Olympus Pen lens. The wanting never stops I'm afraid... it's an 'ego' thing, but if we can acknowledge that reality the disappointment can be managed :) What was your 'first' favourite btw?!

    9:11 Do you use the Super 35 setting with your c2 button more for composing than actual reach? My understanding is all it does is crop the image and thus reduce the pixel size. Couldn't you accomplish the same by shooting full size, using the focus magnifier to compose, and just crop in post? I have the A7R2, which I understand has the same sensor as the A7R3, and that's how I have my C1 button configured.

    This are all my thoughts exactly, and very similar experiences, which (un)affected me the same way. A few years ago I felt stupid photographing a tree in a forest, if someone would walk past. Today I can take street photos (where people are part of the scene rather than single subjects), and of course I still feel uneasy by drawing attention to myself (and risking reactions), but it really does get easier with time. Like you, I'm ready to stand my ground in any case (and I do, in those rare occasions). At the same time (like with you), my reaction will depend on who and what I'm reacting too. There's no need to make anyone feel bad, at the same time I don't even take pics that should do that. If someone is worried about their privacy, I'm ready to delete the photo if asked nicely. If someone thinks that the street belongs to them (like the cops you faced), I'd rather spend unpleasant five minutes standing up to them, than feeling, as you said, like a b**** for the rest of my life. In the end, no photo is worth it, but sadly you can't predict those conflicts, and people like us would surely never start them. Dealing with a few jerks here and there, once or twice a year, is still a small price to pay to creative freedom, and freedom in general. In 99,99% of situations where I interact with people at all, related to me taking pictures, those are either pleasant exchanges ("Oh, I have/had a camera too"), or slight distractions from what I'm doing (but gotta take that too).

    16:02 After hearing how you like to stay close to the vanilla experience, I thought maybe Arch is more stable without much tinkering. But hearing how you used the same installation "for months now" reminded me of the people, back in the XP/Vista/7 days, would reinstall Windows every few months because something broke. Since you mentioned distro-hopping it's safe to assume there's a good chance that you tried Linux Mint. If so, what made you give up on it? One thing that can indeed be a problem for some people is falling behind with software versions for a while. Specifically for this reason I use extra _(but official)_ software repositories for a few software. Do you heavily rely on the latest versions? The reason I ask is that since I can get the latest versions for the few programs I need, I love the fact that I can stay with the same version of Mint easily for 3-5 years without reinstalling it. The reinstalls happen almost exclusively for a fresh start with the new major release. I know some people appreciate a challenge every now and then, but as a tech support guy I've had plenty of challenges thrown at me all the time. :) So at home I ended up with a "lazy and boring" distro that I barely customize - despite being pretty configurable (with Cinnamon). I'm just curious what made you with a bleeding edge distro. :)

    • @1kwords
      @1kwords 23 дня назад

      You see, Arch is for me the one distro that has worked the best out of all I've tried. And yes, one can make the case that that's no merit of Arch itself, but rather of the fact that it's the last one I tried, years after first trying Linux and that by the time that I did I had already learned how to make stuff work... Sure, I wouldn't contradict this argument. However, moreso than not, the main reasons I use Arch are the fact that it is rather barebones and very close to vanilla and the fact that it has the AUR. While I don't necessarily need the bleeding-edge versions of all the programs I use, I do love the fact that the AUR is chock-full, rich with a variety of programs. It basically has EVERYTHING. Just today I searched pkgs.org/ because I've been flirting with the idea of switching to Fedora, just because. I was looking to see if I can find all the programs I need in their repos and I couldn't. The beauty with Arch is that between it's official repos and the AUR I can find everything that I need and I can install, update and maintain everything neatly, cleanly and natively. I know there's COPR and flatpaks and snaps and appimages and whatnot, but that's just not something I enjoy doing if I can avoid it. To this day, I am not using a single flatpak, snap or appimage on my system. Everything is either from the AUR, or a native Arch package. Regarding Mint, it's a distro I haven't personally used, although I know it pretty well since I used to maintain my wife's laptop which used to run Mint for a good while and I often recommend it to new users. I think it's great, but I don't personally like it. I have since switched my wife's laptop to Nobara, fwiw and I think it's great.

    • @kneekoo
      @kneekoo 22 дня назад

      AppImage is sometimes I'm OK with for games, like OpenRA, which don't have to interact with anything on the PC in the first place, but I prefer regular packages. COPR for Fedora is just like AUR for Arch, though - compiled software packaged like the ones in the official repositories, instead of bloated all-in-one packages like AppImage, Flatpak, etc. And just like with AUR, sometimes there can be some bad packages that were not well tested and give you headaches. :D I wonder how the future of Gnome will look like. You mentioned how you like your apps looking the same even if they come from different places, and Gnome is close to making some radical changes that will affect the way the apps look. DaVinci Resolve has a known problem with Gnome because Gnome expects the apps to provide their own window decorations _(if I remember correctly)_ and because DaVinci Resolve doesn't do that, the window cannot be resized/maximized through normal means. I saw this in a recent video of a content creator who used a Gnome-based distro and he had to come up with a solution to maximize the editor's window. About Nobara, I'm not a fan of one-man-projects because they can easily go away at any time. I'd rather use Fedora with COPR, maybe make a script to set everything up easier after a fresh install.

    Those that are very concerned with how street photographers can harm them should try to move to North Korea. As there street photography is probably fully forbidden, so no street photographers will harm your privacy.

    Whenever we lack confidence while shooting, it shows on the people's faces. A grimace mirroring our own expression. Too often when shooting, I would catch a reflection of my own face and be surprised at how tensed I look. The hardest part is to remember to smile, not only for the subjects but for ourselves as well.

    Interesting subject! My main concern is also about coming across as a creep. Because, from my experience, most people in this country don't seem to see any point in the art of street photography. I've had many people, including friends, trying to discourage me, saying that it represents nothing and it's just degrading or disrespectful for the person that's being photographed. So if they dont see the appeal to street photography, they can only interpret it as something weird/malicious/rude, even if they dont always express those feelings, they might think it. That's what bothers me most, because I don't like others to think that about me. And about the laws involving street photography, the combative ones that react in a hostile way, dont know or care to know about what's really legal. I still do it sometimes, but I've missed a lot of opportunities in my 3-4 yrs since I started.

      Cod Civil stabilește limitele liberei exprimării și a dreptului la viață privată (art. 70-77). A fi fotografiat într-un spațiu public nu se află printre restricții, deci este permis. Iar legea audiovizualului interzice doar PUBLICAREA fotografiilor și doar dacă aduce atingere demnității, onoarei și imaginii persoanei (cu o serie de excepții ce permit această publicare).

    That's a post war version, not that it really makes much difference. 1950's design. Introduced as a low cost alternative to the "automatic" lenses when they were introduced.

      @1kwords 24 дня назад

      From what I know and understand, while the lens was indeed made in the 50s, the design of the barrel is pe-war.

    I recently bought this lens, and the radiation behind the lens is 10usv/h. There is nothing wrong with other parts, but it is still an unfriendly number (this radiation amount is equivalent to the radiation amount of a person in a year).

    I have 2 copies of this wonderful lens. A glossy black version (086262) and an aluminium (017669) which I believe are both PT3090 series lenses. Both are export lenses, both are in mint condition - very small amount of oxidization around the zone focus scale on the silver lens. I agree with your verdict - keep the light source well away from the front element. I find colours to be slightly washed out even when the light is behind but that is easily fixed in PP. Wide open, the bokeh is absolutely wild. I have photographs of cherry blossom in Spring which are a riot of hazy bubbles. I have also experienced a slight fall-off of sharpness out towards the edge of the frame. I have tried it on both my A7II and my Fujifilm Xe3 and find I get better results from the smaller sensor. As ever, thanks for your interesting and informative video.

    ...just to add, first soviet 50mm f2 with this optical scheme were called Z.K. 50mm f2 (Sonnar Krasnogorsk) and they were made using Zeiss glass (and, according to some sources, with Zeiss machinery). Couple of models were made '47-'49 (needles to say, they are very rare today) but after Soviets slightly recalculated optical formula to use their glass (which is different than German) so it can be said Jupiter-8 is Soviet adapted version of Sonnar. There is also couple of sub-versions of Jupiter-8 (not talking about different mounts, but apparently significant optical scheme difference, there is very heated discussion on mflenses forum). I have few of them (late '50s KMZ version seems to be the best) but idn, don't see anything that stands out, good lens but somewhat boring
