Dr.Dawson, My 8years female rabbit suffering from GI stases for more than a week now. She has been on critical care (Cisapride, Metacam, Metaclopramide, Simethicone emulsion infant drops, Mirtazapine) all this time. Today we got her x-ray done. The x-ray shows her interstien is filled with poop. Cc whatever we gave was shown outside intestines only. The vet suggested to continue the same medication. We are syringe feeding and giving tummy massages. She hardly poops a little because of the massages. Could you please suggest anything else we can do to push the poop over the intestines? Please help me🙏🙏

I live in the south east so most of the hay around me is Bermuda hay and my rabbits hate it. But they have access to fresh zoysia grass 24/7 even in November and eat that mostly. I give them unlimited tree leaves too after checking if the tree is safe.
Thank you for the information. Waiting on confirmation from stool samples but this is very likely what my poor little one has. Currently fighting for her life. 😭
I have a feral cat that lives in my yard. She's lived on my deck for 8 years. I think she has calicivirus. She has teary eye's, nasal sidcharge & her nose is really in bad shape it looks raw. If I catch her & take her to a vet will she be able to be treated then brought back to live outside? 1) I have two cats so she cant stay in the house. 2) She does not like the inside of the house.bIn 8 years she only dared to come in once. Is it possible to nurse her back to health then let her back to living on the deck?
Wow! Vets are still pushing poisons, I see. I don't know how they can continue to do this with all the trials/research that is available now. They have to know the side effects of these meds, right? An unaware vet is just as dangerous as one who doesn't care... Check out Dr. Jones on Veterinary Secrets here on RUclips ♥
Sadly, I think you need to do cancer surveillance testing if you are going to have your dog on these meds as the risk is so high due to their immunosuppressant effect. Try to do allergy testing and treatment instead if you can find a dermatologist vet we had one, but I was afraid of the anesthesia and regret that as he ended up having 2 surgeries anyway in the end and now chemo! Now you can give allergy treatments at home orally. Also check out the RUclips site Veterinary Secrets as he gives alternative suggestions such as honey as bees' honey. I think that is almost like a allergy treatment with a micro exposure from the honeybee's honey.
I wish we had done the allergy testing and treatment when he was 5 or 6 but I was afraid to put him under general anesthesia, so we went the drug route. We started with apoquel and cytopoint but they quickly failed, and we would end up needing prednisone and antibiotics and antifungals for flareups. Eventually he was put on Atopica which worked great but then he started having problems. He developed tumors at first looked like a wart but turned out to be a plasmacytoma, had to have surgery, relieved it was benign, but only 4 months later another tumor popped up suddenly on the sole of his paw, another plasmacytoma and I had asked for a full work up, but it wasn't done then. He was slowly losing weight over this time and was referred to oncology and put on melphalan to try to prevent any further benign tumors popping up as well as reducing the atopica dose. Both meds have GI side effects of nausea, vomiting and diarrhea so I would premedicate with some Compazine I had alternating with Serenia. My brother didn't and he vomited and couldn't eat for over 24 hours ended up in ER and we found out he had lymphoma T cell of the spleen which is stage IV and T Cell is the worst! So now he is off everything, and we are doing chemo UW-CHOP proto to try to keep him alive as long as possible. I believe he had lymphoma for awhile but don't know how long. We also found out he was allergic to chicken and dairy while he was off the atopica he got hives and it was not just environmental as we had initially thought.
There needs to be more emphasis on why so many dogs these days are suffering from skin conditions, rather than coming up with products that just mask the symptoms. Pharmaceuticals should be your last option, as for everything they supposedly cure, they create another health problem in return. Look to nature for the answer. Good diets, not overly processed food and herbal supplements.
Thank you
Thank you for important video. Fenbendatsoli (Axilur), for 4 weeks, is very good for this! With many times u need also others, like antibioticis or kortisone for side symptoms.
Greetings Doc, I would like to request your suggestions for my bunny, he is gotten abcesses on the side of his feet (not under the feet) I am not sure if it's abcesses, it looks like a slightly bigger pimple. The place I reside in has no proper vets for buns. Kindly please share your suggestions and opinions. Would be extremely helpful. Thank you so much.
Hello, Can I somehow get in contact with you? :)
Hi dears, my bunny has EC now, probably.. today we started the treatment with Panacur.. i wanted to ask, bc Im not sure.. is it better to leave him in peace / better to take him out of the cage, love him, hold him in my arms, (as much as possible, because of his convulsions). I honestly can't tell you how much it hurts. Thank you!
Thank you so much for this video! I'm seeing it 3 years after you made it, but after 2 days of searching for real info on behind calicivirus, yours is the only one that describes in detail the issues/answers I was looking for. I may actually get some sleep tonight. Subscribed and going to watch more 🙏
Sorry if I missed it, but what do you recommend for the hay and pellets raito that you should be feeding each day to adult healthy rabbits? Do they do better feeding 3X a day or 2X a day?
This may have taken my bunnies life away almost 2 years ago. I miss him so much.
What is the failure rate of parvo vaccine please ? My one year old Chihuahua has just recovered from Parvo after an 11 day hospital stay, but had all his vaccines and all up to date. How did this happen ? He also had C Diff positive at the same time - Did parvo cause that too ? Thank you
When start vac age weeks.
We adopted a cat, rescue had done felv/fiv and said negative. Well she came home got sick and we retested after she recovered, she did not fight it off. She has been with us 7 years so far more than we expected, our other cats we vaccinated and kept separate but one just passed of a rare cancer. Now I am wondering if he had latent felv and gave it to her or vice versa and he became latent… very difficult disease in theory but our experience with it was just that initial surprise of rapid decline and er visit with relatively normal/good health since. I have been reading about it for 7 years and trying to just be grateful we got one case that is living longer than expected. Now we plan on asking our vet about whether we should bring in a healthy cat and vaccinate them or adopt another with felv…
When I am trying to squeeze it out the syringe it shoots out really fast how do you get it to come out slow I’ve tried thick I’ve tried thin it still shoots fast
"Horses, if I have to" is a mood honestly
That's got to be the reason why mama kitty didn't want her kitten when they were 3 weeks
I had a pair of Holland Lops. One of them kept nibbling inappropriately on the linoleum edge I had to protect the carpet in our living room. I tried various deterrents as suggested by bunny educators and ended up using cardboard boxes to best solution. Zach had his first episode of GI stasis in Aug 2023 and with veterinary & supportive care he recovered. He had numerous other episodes that I was able to nurse him through. The biggest clue he was not well was that he refused any pellets, or his morning treat of either apple or banana slices which he normally would come running for. He was also loafing sitting very still and eyes were only half open. He ignored his brother. So with these signs he immediately got subcutaneous fluids, simethicone drops, belly massage and syringe fed Oxbow Critical Care formula. I separated him from his brother so I could monitor his droppings output. The rabbits always have loose Timothy hay and hay cubes available. They also have access to fresh grass outside in the yard weather dependant. So I’m not sure why he chewed the linoleum unless he was bored but they don’t really play with their toys either. So I was able to nurse him through multiple episodes but unfortunately in April ‘24 he didn’t respond well to first aid measures and went downhill very quickly. He wasn’t taking the syringe feedings well and as I was preparing to take him to the ER clinic late at night, he flopped over on his side as he would when sleeping. On closer inspection I realized he wasn’t t breathing and his heart had stopped beating. He wasn’t bloated nor did he have a tense abdomen at any time. I took him to work at the veterinary clinic the next day and my colleagues did an autopsy. He had ruptured his cecum. So I’m thinking the linoleum ingestions may have caused some damage to his GI. I’m sad he has passed and now his brother Cody has been solo since. Exactly one week after Zach’s passing, Cody had GI stasis, likely stress related. He responded very well to immediate supportive measures and he’s been well since. Watch your bunnies closely every day! Hours can make a difference between life and death.

Is there any research on compounds that have been tested to keep FELV in lysogeny/ remission? Ive seen advertisement on a compound that says it can help FELV+ kitties but I'm not finding the research for such claims. Just lost my 2yo to autoimmune that targeted her RBCs. She passed so quickly and it was awful to go though. Im now constantly watching her FELV+ sister in fear that she will go just as quickly.
Great video! Thank you so much
I was a custom cut butcher for 8 years. The sweetest cows are the most tender. Angry cows are almost always tougher. Buy this guy's meat, I bet it is amazing. Stop supporting feed lots! Beware of grass fed beef scams.
We don't have a definite diagnosis because its so expensive for the tests...we give her danimorin but not the other meds. Can we treat her anxiety with trazadone until we get her to the vet in two weeks. Im so sorry and feel so horrible because its so expensive to get her diagnosed. I know shes got it. What can I do to make her more comfortable until we can see if its time. Im so terrified she is going to die in my arms before I can euthanize her peacefully. It's going to be more than I can handle.
What boggles me is my cat still got it even after having the vaccine. She’s really bad off right now. Big swollen lymph node in her neck. Wondering if it’s as simple as a bad tooth. Hoping a good shot of steroids and antibiotics will bring back my Little Lucy Loo. Cross fingers, everyone. I hate feline leukemia.
She didn’t make it. I lost her early this morning. I hate feline leukemia.
@@lorijackson7841My heart just breaks for you, I am SO SORRY for your loss!!! I just lost my baby to this vile, awful monster last week, and I'm at a loss without him. My cat, Armondo, was seemingly fine and healthy one week, and then dying from this the next. He had been vaccinated as well... I hate this disease sooo bad!!
Enjoy your Channel 😊 if you were here in SoCal I would take my pet to you !
can you post a video of a cat's actual reaction? My cat has feline herpes (eyes/nose) cleared up with lysine. BUT she has been wheezing daily 1-2x's day. Not long enough for me to video record. Can you show an example of a cat actually wheezing?
None of these medications fix the problem! Only mask the problem! Check out allergies in your dogs and fix that. It takes time to do this 🙂
My cat just died 1day ago , now I have 3 cat are sick , the second now in iv fluid , the doctors fee quite so expensive
How are they now ? I have lost my last only cutie .
I give simethicone 1ml once a hr for 3 hrs.
My 6 yr old calico cat was just diagnosed. My vet was all but useless when it came to treatment. The best he could come up with was a shrug saying " _theres always a blood transfusion_ " 🙄. Sure...I'll just drop thousands on my cat for something that has the same chance of helping as I do winning the lottery.
Damn I wish I was aware of this a few days ago l. I had no idea this could happen until it was too late. Very helpful, straight forward video!
If the dog only cough when drink wather not when she is running or have collar on only when she drinks what can that be?
Is it always middle age dogs? My dog was diagnosed with a collapsed trachea as a puppy. Which scared me so much that it will reach its worst earlier. He's six now and it has gone from coughing when he plays hard to coughing often even at rest. It's heartbreaking to see. He's been refusing the manuka honey.

It is so good to see you on RUclips again! The videos you have made on your channel, even if 2.5 years old, even if 3 years old, even if 10 years old… they will help so many people grow in knowledge and understanding in animal care no matter how frequently you post! But I am so glad to see you catching up with viewers. Thank you so much for doing what you do. I have the utmost respect for veterinarians and for parents. You’re a rebel, man!! Keep fighting the good fight!! We are here for you and your content! :)
Do you have suggestions for finding good veterinarians? I moved to a new state. Since coming here the only thing that matters is money. My previous vets cared for my pet before bringing money up. Here? It's the money before my pet. It was so hard because i had to put my dog of 12yrs down last month and each time they came to discuss treatment like a broken record they just kept reminding me of my $130 walk in emergency fee. Just no care for my pet only their bill they intended to give me. I just dont know what to do. I tried another vet for a puppy i was gifted. $250 for check up and vaccines with a $1k quote for a spay. Like its insane here. Where i come from prices were $50 spay/nueter with $10 vaccinations and this isn't even for low income it was the standard. Anyway looking for advice if possible. Much like the human health care system the veterinarian care system is just profit and not actual health care.
Hey doctor dawson, I may be a little late but I'm facing a few struggles with my bunny. I am in a bad financial spot, but my bunny is 7 months old and sneezing often, I believe around 13 times in a span of 30 minutes. She has a tiny bit of yellow marking on her nose but no mucus. She also gave birth a week ago. I am wondering how much time do i have, she shows no other symptoms and is eating well. The regular vet will open in 3 days and i will take out a loan but I'm wondering if i should go to loan shark and take her to the emergencies vet or wait for monday. Her sneezing happened so suddenly!
Don't put yourself in crippling debt, because when your rabbit needs help you won't be able to afford it. I can't give you specific medical advice on the right thing to do without seeing your bunny. But usually you have a little tike if they are eating and drinking and breathing okay
Doctor, would you please consider doing a video dedicated to maximizing one's dogs healthy and longevity life span?
Hi Doc, thanks for the info. My little Bichon Frise is 10 years old and has tracheal collapse and is on low dose prednisolone for an extended period. I cant give her honey bcos she has IBS. Do you have any other suggestions?
That makes it really hard, air quality is huge, so whatever you can do to keep a cool (not hot or cold) clean air where she hangs out can make a big difference
@@DoctorDawson Thanks Doc.. Have you heard of Tylosin and will it help to add to the preds?
@@astridtravasso9361 tylosin is an antibiotic, it probably won't help with tracheal collapse, but you should probably talk to your vet to come up with a plan
Yes, the vet only has the prednisolone solution. I've decided to look into homeopathy. Will update here if i see any improvement 😊
Ty doc😊
I want to open a shelter for cats with felv. Recently, my sister, my daughter, and I received a total of 5 kittens from a neibor. Every single one has felv. Also what would be the cheapest way to learn to be a vet?
I don't know how to open the shelter. I want to have space for feral as well I hate to see them in cages it is just something about the bars
There really isnt an inexpensive way to become a vet, it's 8 years of school and most students graduate with >250k in student loans. It's not easy! Best of luck on opening a shelter!
