Grow Tropical MK
Добавлен 5 сен 2023
Hey there! So, we're starting this thing called GrowTropical MK, and we're based in Milton Keynes, Buckinghamshire, UK.
We're gonna be documenting our tropical garden as it grows into a jungle paradise, and we hope to inspire others along the way. We're all learning about this garden together, so come join us!

Magnolia Grandiflora: Exmouth edition
A La Ronde in Devon is a quirky 16-sided national trust property. I decided to document a couple of the tropical look trees, including the Magnolia Grandiflora "exmouth" and male and female monkey puzzle trees.

Do they have tendrils?
@gold-blooded Hiya, yes they do, not as aggressive as most similar climbers, though. They won't attach to masonary.
Now i'm thinking about this for the new gaff 🤔
Nice! Can imagine the paranoia when freezing weather is forecast tho 😬
Tell me about it! This one was well sheltered and effectively in a ravine. Hardy to about 0c I reckon. They probably wrap it in the winter.
Having a star jasmine climb my house is the dream boss!
@TheCornishCottageGarden-bs5lf yeah man, I reckon it's well old it was a couple of inches thick at the base.
Very pretty
Another great vid!! What a wonderful looking garden and view!
Fantastic boss. My sister bought us a national trust pass, so rinsing that while we are here. Places where we probably wouldn't have gone to, but are going to !
How big are the blossoms on the magnolia? They look massive
Inbetween a sandwich plates and dinner plate ! Huge
They have some over at Richards plants, this colour and a darker leaf one. I'm still toying with getting one, but because they lose the leaves early and get them late I've stopped myself 😬 lovely looking though
@NinjaTeaDrinker yes I agree they don't hold the leaves very long, but create quite an impact. I would never put in the ground though as have seen how big these get.
@@GrowTropicalMK ah! I might get one, do they still get big leaves in a pot longterm?
@NinjaTeaDrinker not too sure, but does seem happy in the pot at least for now, the pot it came in was fairly small. It has doubled in size since I purchased around 1 year ago.
One of my favourite trees, catalpa bignoniodes 👌🏻
Ah a plant where the female has bigger balls than the male..you go girl😅
Pretty Garden!
@Gtumrths Thanks it has grown a lot more since this vid !
Healthy specimen 👍🏼
Thanks. So many of these are having real issues, whereas the tropical style plants and trees are not. Very strange, really.
Full sun best position, no doubt 🫒
I keep all my bamboo in 55l pots. Got them all along the fence at the bottom of the garden which backs onto an alleyway. Works really well, but have to start watering them from February onwards. When we painted the fence a few months ago we had them moved into the garden and it felt like an instant bamboo grove 😊
I think I have 50 % now in pots. It is great ... as you said an instant bamboo Grove:-)
yes boss! Nice solutions right there!
Cheers boss!!
add crushed eggshells, compost and manure. your welcome
@jonzacha807 welcome advice. I will add manure, but I can't eat that many eggs in time 😢
Me too!
Well done
Picked a hot day for all that malarkey
@@geesgardeningclubuk5247 Malarkey is definitely the word for it!
Back breaking labour by the look of it boss
😂😂
Oh heck!
I thought it smells of oranges when the leaves are rubbed?
@NinjaTeaDrinker haha some have suggested that, but i have never smelt an orange that smells this bad 😂 it really is repulsive, but only when disturbed.
Oh blimey, I bought one plant and have split it up around the garden 😂. I think salvia amistad stinks when disturbed, like trying to get it stand back up again but others say it doesn't 🤷🏼♀️😂I also love cordylines but absolutely hate the smell when in flower, so I've planted 5 at this new house 😬@@GrowTropicalMK
@NinjaTeaDrinker I love the smell of cordyline flowers and the Salvia, apart from my amistad does not appear to smell at all, just all the others:-) I had the Fish mint in my garden until someone told me about the smell, one rub, one sniff and it was in the bin !
Iv always know this plant as Chameleon, and mine has spread like mad wish i kept it in the pot
Beautiful garden, iv never seen that type of foxglove before and i miss my ensete it never made it through the winter
Thanks and my deepest condolences for your Ensette :-(
@@GrowTropicalMK hahaha👍🏼
There are two varieties of Lancewood. The first one you brought up is the Fierce Lancewood, which is less common in the wild.

Wow Lovely Flowers ^^ Like 48 My friend, thank you for good sharing Have a good relationship
Lots of color and blooms. Your garden looks great! I love those ensete. I may one day rip out my musa basjoos and go with the ensete. The leaves are striking. Yours in the flower pot looks great also! Nice video. 😊
I think have both as the ensette likely won't get through a harsh winter. Although my larger one has been outside since the end of January.
Beautiful. A nice and up close perspective, I like it!😊
Thanks much appreciated 👏
It all looks fabulous! We were 90°F and extremely humid today. Too hot to be out for more than about 20 minutes at a time. I rely on salvias to bloom through anything and I envy your bananas. Hope you get a bit of summer soon.
Thanks much appreciated, yes Sylvia's are great for colour and thanks for letting me know how reliable they are. This is only my second year of growing them.
@@GrowTropicalMK Oh, interesting. They are hardy for you then? They are not for me so I take cuttings in the fall and hold them over in the house for 5 or 6 months. It is a bit of a pain but I find them that valuable. Cheers.
Looks great
@@Sharonadams717 thanks much appreciated 👏
Nice
I'm not keen on smell of the amistads but love the flowers although I think I've planted too many together not realising how much they bush out! 🤦🏼♀️
@NinjaTeaDrinker you can never have too many :-) Thanks for the comment. I actually don't notice much of a smell coming from the Amistad probably because it is the middle of the bed, but the red one really has a pleasant scent and is near entrance to my garden.
Fantastic array of plants there boss. Like you, i'm get totally fed up with the dismal weather, your garden is looking great despite the grey skies tho!
@TheCornishCottageGarden-bs5lf thanks I am sure these dull days will reverse soon!
Cool video. I just divided my Phyllostachys edulis - was planning to keep it in the ground but I've been reading some horror stories about it being as troublesome as Japanese knotweed, so I think pots are the way to go.
Thanks. Yes pots are the way to go for a while, but they need to be upgraded in size otherwise the bamboo drains all the nutrients given time. I am only going to plant clumping in the ground from now on.
@@GrowTropicalMK I'm with you there!
Very nice greenhouse, annoying when parts are missing on anything! I'll have to do a video of my little greenhouse and what I've been growing from seed
@NinjaTeaDrinker yes do i will watch for sure.! I am a complete novice as far as greenhouses are concerned, so I hope all goes well!
Nice tour boss, ive got serious greenhouse envy now!
Yes boss! Quality climbers right there, as you know im a fan of Trachleospurmum Jasminoides, really considering Clematis Armandii too
It's awesome I love the way after doing nothing for ages it just suddenly started creeping out!
I've heard of gazania before. That is one cool looking bloom. Too bad it's not cold hardy.
Unfortunately, so! I believe you can collect the seeds, though, so I will be looking to do that.
@GrowTropicalMK Well that's easy enough. Kinda like zinnias. Cool!
Great video, very informative, I like the look of the pleioblastus one, interesting variegation. I’m just about to dig up a large section of a fargesia bamboo to relocate to another spot and I’m not looking forward to. They have a tendency to grow huge in my garden, it’s got to be all the rain 😊
Thanks much appreciated. Thr pleioblastus is a funny one and have identified that it really doesn't like a sunny spot and does better in the shade. I have loads of fargesia, but unfortunately, hardly any in the ground. What sort of heights does your get to?
@@GrowTropicalMK At a guess I would say easily 12 to 15 ft, thankfully not a runner.
Nice I would like to get a few different varieties in the ground, but will not be planting any more runners that for sure! My golden bamboo is roughly the same height.
A really informative watch, thank you very much! I hope to get involved with bamboo someday and will refer to this video in the future.
Thanks I am glad it was helpful!
Yes boss, gonna be referring to this guide when i move to my own place, probably gonna plant some bamboo
Thanks, appreciated! Please feel free to reach out.
@@GrowTropicalMK sweet as boss, sweet as
Very beautiful, my friend! Thanks for sharing 👍
Great advice. I'm in the process of trying to remove a rampant bamboo that was unrestrained. Very difficult. My new golden bamboo is in a raised trailer box on the patio. Not taking any chances with this one!
Thanks. I am just about to drop a video on dividing as need to reduce the amount in beds !
I am amazed at the range of, what I would consider tender plants, you can grow. It’s fascinating.
Very nice flowers, but extremely stubborn about opening!
Haha yeah you are not wrong, since filming this a few hours back they have all closed!
That has a cool looking bloom! Now you have an operational greenhouse, you could potentially overwinter it
I believe this will see off a light frost or two, but not much more.. I think I may have to bring in the house!

Absolutely gorgeous. I'm looking to have these in my garden some day. Thanks for sharing. 🏵🌿
Thank you; nice video 👍
Cheers appreciated
I'd do the barrier. Amazes me when I see running bamboo types being sold in diy stores with no warning 😮
100% in b&q they somtimes label it as mixed bamboo! No warning of running.
