DUAL 714 Q VINTAGE TURNTABLE REPAIR AND OVERHAUL **PART 2** **1080p**
!*!*!*!Note: due to copyright, the Nina Hagen audio test clip was deleted from the video!*!*!*!
This is part two of a 45 year old Dual 714 Q turntable repair.
Part 1 is the overview, diagnosis, and electrolytic capacitor replacement.
Part 2 is tracking down the problems and final repair and overhaul.
This video is long because I wanted to show my methodology for narrowing down the source of the problem.
The problems on this TT ran much deeper than expected so these videos became longer than expected. I tried to cover a few other common problems you may encounter on this model. I hope some of you find this helpful or enjoyable.

Furinno Turn-N-Tube Haydn End Table Product Review * As Speaker Stands*
Hola , alguien que me pueda indicar por favor que número de parte es el tweeter de ese modelo de parlantes. Gracias
Probably just replacing the caps which are 40 year old electrolytics would have been a better budget option and some inner lining to the enclosures. Maybe even a simple inductor on the woofer. The cheap replacement tweeter was also likely the cause of the woeful 6k
Hi ,thank you for the info, my model is the. Avr 1713 please send me the reset info.
How do I reset the AVR-1601 model?
Doesn't this one work?
If that "insulator pad" is actually an insulator pad, what about the screws that directly connects the transistor grounds to the heatsink?
The screw hole is insulated front through to back from the metal.
Do you have the wiring diagram for the crossover
Sorry, no, and I have since given the speakers away.
Great video. Thats a good price for that crossover. I have used mattress foam to line the walls of a speaker and it worked fine. Much cheaper then egg crate foam and got same result.
I just ordered a 2 pack of "felt dishwasher soundproofing/insulator blanket". Felt is an excellent damping material, I'll see how this works out.
i was on the phone for 5 hrs theses people DO NOT KNOW THEIR ASS FROM A HOLE IN THE GROUND 11/13/24 DO NOT BE NIAVE
Acrylic mats for turntables is the newest snakeoil for "audiophiles".....90 quid for a mat is ridiculous...sorry.
this is just my opinion ive used both i much prefer a cork matt.
Actually I agree.
My tweeter keeps blowing dui to high volumes
I have the APM from funk firm (uk), and all i can say that is amazing product and it was worth the invesment. You can clearly hear the difference in sound.
Great tips and a great job making the repair. I recently bought/won an eBay auction of a PS-LX510 that works, but I plan on going through electrical repairs as a preventative measure for longevity. Very good video and explanations.
It's well worth the trouble to replace all of the electrolytic caps before they go bad and take out other components. Glad you liked the video!
My Dual...701...❤❤❤
Denon used to be a quality company. Now their hdmi boards go out if you look at the unit wrong.
I do not have sim I only the consumer cellar mint mobile eSIM mint mobile I tried that not working it is iPhone 12 maybe I should take it out of the other phone
WOW!!!
Great job man... mine does not olay 45 as well
when i dont have anything to fix i just others do it
Just out of curiosity, I bought a Takmork acrylic turntable mat on Amazon for about a dozen dollars, and thanks to your advice, it was a very worthwhile investment!
How much is a dozen dollar?
Thanks for sharing this info. The manual is too long to find this bit of knowledge. I do have a question and I know it's a long shot. I did this because I wanted to fix my receiver freezing after a while but since i did it, it doesn't give any amplified sound output. On full volume it I get the sound of the input very soft and crackly. Does anyone know if I just killed my amp?
another great video! Awesome work!
Hi, First of all I wish u luck solving all the issues that You faced with this great turntable, I have one as well. I am planning to replace capacitors too, if You have time I would appriciate if you could post the list of all capacitors that You had used, I also think that this turntable deserves best possible parts. I live in Germany so it should be easy to find suitable capacitors. I hope video no. 2 will cover replacing Sylicon oil, because I'm quite unsure how to do it properly. Great job so far, and I look forward to part 2. Greetings from Germany 🖐️
Thanks for the comment, I hope to get over there one day as it was my great grandfathers birthplace. The good news is everything is done I just have to compile the video, the bad news is I showed how to replace the damping fluid on the lift but it didn't help. I may not have had the right oil or I didn't use enough of it, but the topic is covered. It's an amazing turntable (I still own my Dual 1257 I purchased in 1983) and I am planning other videos that will feature the 714. I will try to find the capacitor invoice and add it t the video for you.
i have a amply reciver sony STR V626. I cant control on the front device. help me pls. Thank you
Have a AVR 4306 (Don't have remote) can't get any sound, don't see it on your list though.
Sorry, that's not a model I'm familiar with.
@@AudioTomReviews Okay, Thanks Anyway
Same problem different model
Top notch buddy i amost bought an acrylic platter thanks to your advice i didnt waste my money on this!! Congrats!
An acrylic PLATTER is way different and far superior than an acrylic MAT that he's demonstrating in this video.
Anyone know reset procedure for avr-1700? I’m stuck in standby. Manual doesn’t show. Thanks!
Same here I hate these Denon receivers this is the third damn one I've had and they're all junk when it comes to this I don't care what anybody says these things are just too finicky. I TOO HAVE AN AVR 1700 I'VE BEEN SEARCHING FOR 2 AND 1/2 HOURS ONLINE WITH NO LUCK... ON HOW TO GET THE DAMN STANDBY OFF!!!
It could be in protect mode. First thing to check is unplug all speakers from the receiver then try turning it back on again, If it comes out of protect mode, then it's a bad speaker or speaker wire. If not then the problem runs deeper.
@@AudioTomReviews thank you for your advice. 😃
Oh, here you go, factory reset for your model on Denon's site: manuals.denon.com/AVRX1700H/EU/EN/GFNFSYvyalrwrt.php
Listening from RUclips, I don't notice an "improvement" compared to the original... The upgrade took away the bass. The treble improved logically due to the change of tweeter. The mid frequencies do sound clearer. It sounds different, but for me not necessarily better... But the important thing is that you like it!! That was the goal. Beyond tastes, very good video, very neat work and explanation!!
Yeah, it's really hard to capture the difference with the current equipment I have. I need to get a mixer and 2 good mic's, hard to justify right now. The bass is what really wasn't captured the way it needed to be (and the recording is in mono). The "before" bass was more prominent, but extremely low quality. Boomy, boxy hollow sound, not good. After was articulate, clean and well defined, but that made it seem like there was less. I kept the eq the same for comparison, but they would handle a bass boost much better afterwards. I am slowly upgrading my equipment warchest and hope to bring better samples in the future. Thanks for the post!
USB to TRRS adapter with an extension TRRS to TRRS cable makes it far easier. Also, having your test files on a USB stick plugged into the car makes it much easier, too. I used pink noise and some Michael Jackson files and sat in the back seat making adjustments on my DSP. Also.. don't sweat minor noises.. listening environment is never perfect. I just do it a couple times in different sessions and then give a final listen or two by ear.
I will give the USB/TRRS adapter a try. I have not been able to find 3.5mm TRRS cables that didn't seriously degrade the sound. (well, at a reasonable price anyway)
Hi how i can factory reset my Denon AVR390? Thanks!
Here under "resetting microprocessor" www.manualslib.com/manual/814558/Denon-Avr-390.html?page=33#manual
thank you. you helped me a lot. the exact same thing happened to me, i just couldn't figure out why i.postimg.cc/8ktP1mRn/k-ivky-bas-k.jpg
Excelent work!
Thanks!
If you have the typical $200-350 turntable, who cares! If you have a$1000 - whatever, then you need an acrylic platter. My $1300 Thorens has a metal platter that is nicely balanced, but with my line contact cartridge the rubber mat versus a good acrylic (without the problems stated) has a more isolated sound, indicating it isn't picking up vibrations externally. You should add the quality of the turntable, and the type of cartridges used makes a difference. The quieter the electronics used, the more the turntable benefits. We've done a blindfold test with the same records, and all my friends can tell when the acrylic mat is used. On my Rega with heavier acrylic platter (private English made), the difference is more pronounced with a richer midrange and less noticeable distortion. This stuff isn't cheap, so determine the quality of the system and turntable before buying a high quality acrylic platter (turned, not molded), and so perfect you can't see the rotations. Sensitivity of speakers, especially with ribbon tweeters, also makes a difference. You should always remember it's the total system that gives the quality of the sound.
Ideally an acrylic mat should be made model specific to a given TT, and there are some out there. There are so many variables with different TT's that it is hit or miss for the consumer, and that is probably why we see so many different review from good to bad.
I got free pair of Sony ss u601av 3 way towers and decided to make some improvements as well. I braced the inside and changed the tweeter with an infinity tweeter pair I had laying around. And changed the mid range . I lined the wood inside with carpet cushion mat and also use poly-fil . I didn’t use to much ploy-fil because the speakers cabinet are ported . Now I have a good looking set of vintage speakers that don’t sound bad . I was dumbstruck when I realized they sounded better than my advents and infinity Rs 4000 . One little experiment I did with the poly-fil since all the drivers are installed 1 1/2 “ on top of each other I tried using different amounts of poly material behind each driver to the ports and it made the bass sound cleaner and not interfere with the mid and highs coming out the speakers. The sound stage improved significantly .
If I had to choose one thing to improve a speakers sound, it would be damping. Glad your speakers turned out so nice!
Mine are from 1976 Kenwood kl888 and they are working Excellent maybe 🤔 Because the Pledge furniture polish 😂
I'll post a video with audio samples "With Lemon Pledge......Without Lemon Pledge"
@AudioTomReviews pledge furniture provides a condition spray light on clean cloth around the outside of speaker provides protection from wear works best on rubber surround and nylon also good for aluminum woofers and polypropylene
nice , I just picked up the same unit , and it's dead !! nothing happens when I push the power on ... is there a fuse anywhere ? I can't see one ...thanks
Not one that I remember, but there are two of those ICP10 circuit protectors. I only blew one of them, maybe you blew the other one or both. Unsolder each one and check it for continuity. If one is bad replace it as well as all of the electrolytic capacitors. I hope that works for you.
Great now how do I turn up or down the bass?
I don't have it now, but I think you have to control that from the remote.
Any idea why my tone arm go down? The weight goes down like yours, but the actual needle arm won’t move. I must be missing a linkage but I can’t see where it might be.
Ouch, without seeing it is is hard to tell, make sure nothing is binding and no spring has come loose.
😘
Good morning everyone!! Could someone tell me if it is possible to configure this receiver from the front panel? I just bought it but it doesn't come with the remote control, and where I live it is very difficult to find it... the receiver is the DENON AVR-3312CI
I got a good quality mat (the Acromat by the Funk Firm) for my Rega. Rega does not recommend a weight or record clamp. My 10 y/o Rega was sounding a bit dark, lacking openness and detail in the upper mids. The cartridge was a good one and new) I tried a cork mat but it made the bass more pronounced but did not open up the sound or allow more upper-mid detail. So upon recommendation of another RUclipsr, I tried the Acromat. It opened up the sound (vs the wool stock mat) and allowed more upper-mid detail to emerge. What a difference. I was shocked. (I was shocked at the cork mat too. I just didn't like the effect). I think the two other factors that determine the effectiveness of mats are the specific turntable including platter material and the quality of the mat. That's why higher end manufacturers are using Delrin platters. Rega is using ceramic on its high end tts now. A lot of manufacturers use wool mats, even Rega. They are more neutral sounding. Mats making a difference in sound...I would have thought it was ridiculous three years ago.
I would take a wool mat over a poorly coupled acrylic any day.
@@AudioTomReviews That's probably true. A poorly coupled one is no good. I got a Funk Firm and it is solidly coupled to the platter via thin tack strips.
How to reset the remote only? Please
Hey Tom is this microphone worth buying as of today do you recommend i save the extra few dollars and get this instead of the umm6 ? Did you finally perfect connecting it to the laptop with rew?
UMM-6 is really the way to go. The IMM-6 is cheap but has drawbacks. The biggest is all the 3.5mm trs/trrs cables on the market suck. They are noisy and degrade the sound, so I plug directly into the PC. This will get the job done in the basic sense, but I will be upgrading. It does work with REW fine, but in a clumsy way.
An acrylic mat is good for setting anti skate, but sound wise, they’re not for me.
I have the same Sony Domi digital surround receiver got mine in 1998 add nobody beats the wiz $499.99 came in a remote with an LCD screen still works only issue I had back in 2009 was the the display light went out disconnect the front panel and pull the cable gently control panel which reset the whole display works 100% also I don't push the power high so strain on the caps. ( Long time since I seen it fully decked out of the original what's the sound of a headphone jack
instead of a weight, I prefer a well designed record clamp, because I never wanted extra weight on the platter bearing, and figured a clamp serves the same purpose .. I use the Michell clamp now, but others have worked well in the past, including a five dollar plastic one from the now defunct radio shack . the Michell clamp is made of Delron, a hard material they say has the benefit of closely matching the resonance of a vinyl record, if that matters, and which they also use in their turntable platter, without a mat. When the presenter mentioned the ceramic platter has a sharp edge , that was enough to satisfy my product curiosity, because that edge is not consumer friendly, and will stay that way, like a ceramic knife.
I may look into a clamp. Some turn table motors won't handle the added weight. Clamps were pretty scarce for a while but it looks like more options are available.
S960h
What about a avr 589 ..? I can't find anything much on this receiver and you didn't include it? Can anyone help ?
Look at this: www.avsforum.com/threads/cant-reset-avr-589.2672153/
And maybe this: ruclips.net/video/R0C0plKixFM/видео.html
Why are you placing the acrylic mat on the the rubber mat.
The only time I put it on the rubber mat was on the Hitachi since the raised area at the center hub precludes you from using the acrylic mat without it. That was done only as a test and it showed that putting it on top of the mat is not a viable option.
Awesome job!
