[9mm] 115gr v 124gr In A Micro Compact
Hello new viewers and welcome back subscribers. Is there any difference in accuracy at self-defense ranges between 115gr and 124gr 9mm out of a micro compact Ruger Max 9. I am back out in the National Forest and I’m using Blazer Brass 9mm 115 grain and 124 grain through a Ruger Max 9. Enjoy!

#1 GMRS & CB Mic Setup in a F150 Hybrid
Enjoyable and very informational post. Thank you for taking this time. New Sub..
Fun and informative review! Hey, friend, have you shot mini shells with this ks7? Works? Reliably? Can shells be of mixed sizes, ie some mini, some regular 2.75, in the same tube?
The scope they give you with the gun is horrible
What if it rains
I've been considering one of these shotguns for a while. Have you found any major problems or things to consider?
could this work for duck as well?
You are just short stroking causing the shells not to eject properly. When you rack the slide rack it hard , it won't hurt it thats just the way pump shotguns are . Also get yourself a solid rest with some sandbags to take yourself out of the equation when sighting in your scope .
I have lots of Gamehide gear. I have been very happy with it. They also make blaze orange clothes for women which is very hard to find. Those jeans are super comfortable.
51 feet from your sofa to your front door! Damn, that's half a basketball court. If you have that kind of coin, you could have good security!
lol 😂. I’m just an everyday middle class deplorable Walmart shopper. And it’s just a long ass hallway.
@@FirstNatureBackland"I...grew up middle class... where.. people care about their lawn..." 😅
I’m concerned about the errors ejecting the shells when cycling the action. Yikes. Any info guys?
will it fit the hatsan bullpup?
The manufacturer description says it’s for a KS7 and KSG.
😂💪💪💪
Next time, for better accuracy, get your self a steady rest.
👍
Just so you know, you can now buy Ruger Max-9 slides direct from Ruger, that have the optics cuts in them, for $140.00. It gets rid of the loaded chamber indicator, so you can put an optic on it. It is an RMS-C drilled cut, so it will fit most of the popular optics. I did this for mine, because I wanted the option for a red dot. I live just up the road from you, up in placerville, up the 50 corridor from you. I don't like that you have to buy the separate rail, when you can buy a P365 with an optics cut rail in California, and that doesn't need a chamber indicator. But, a p365 is like 3 times the cost, so it is what it is.
Hey that’s good info. Definitely worth it for someone who wants an optic. I love Placerville. I tried moving there in 2013. Hangtown is one of my favorite places. I’m always looking for land to buy up there. A good bug out spot since it’s not far. It’s always good to know when locals watch my videos. 🤜
@FirstNatureBackland yeah, found your stuff a few weeks ago, saw you went to a gun shop I'd been to, and had to give you a sub! I love my max 9. I went with it over the sig, because of the price point, as well as the fact that I didn't need to pay anything extra for the night sights. Ruger started selling the slides not to long ago, and you can get them sent straight to you, since they aren't "a gun." Or serialized. For 220, you can get one sent out with a ready-dot already mounted as well. Not the best red dot, but they are good enough, and you don't need batteries, since they are fiber optics! At night, they are cowitnessed with your iron sights, so you can still target. And they work pretty good during the day. Awesome to see a fellow Californian gun owner, especially one in my neck of the woods!
Great video. I have tried the Missouri Tactical pad like the one you showed and I just didn't care for the look and its easy of being able to be knocked out. I also tried the upgraded pad from Kel Tec, it wasn't much better than the original. So I designed an adapter to be able to use a Limb Saver pad. It looks great and performs great as well.
I’m pretty sure rifle slugs are only to be used on smooth bore and if you have a rifle barrel, you can use regular slugs
you are correct, well you can shot riffled slugs in it, but you don't gain anything, it will hinder accuracy, i would defiantly not set my scope using them and you will have to clean your barrel more often. but in a pinch if you are shooting shorter range and you have no sabot shells they could be useful
Both slugs he used are sabot slugs....
Great video, very informative. Bolt your safe down! Also, 2 lights strips go on the hinge side, 3 on the other side and the last 1 on top.
1:34 That was what sold me on my p22. The guy at the shop was pushing glocks but I couldn’t get my hand around that grip. The mag release and slide release were also way too far. My P22 had some problems. It would jam on anything not a cci minimag. I also needed help to keep the spring and guide rod together when I reassembled. I got a captured guide rod, new front sight and it’s better now. I noticed I can shot a wider variety of ammo too, I just have to keep the mags loaded to 8. I wouldn’t “bet my life on it.” But for what I bought it for, to scare coyotes away from inside my house, it’s fine.
That holster and the grips looks awesome
Thanks. They feel great too.
Fantastic video and really good valid points.
Very nice. I would have spent more on the gun but, glad it works for ya!
Hey great video! I have a question though, I am interested in buying one, my main concern is does the field barrel come with ability to add an optic of some kind? Or is it strictly iron sights?
Hey thanks for asking. The field barrel comes double beads, not irons. It does not have an optic mount, but there are aftermarket mounts made just for these that mount to the side of the receiver, then go up and over to the other side where the final attachment is made. I believe they are called saddle mounts. They look cool too. Cheers 🍻
the only barrel for the mossberg 500/590 that has a scope mount on the barrel is the 24" riffled, but the 28" has a Vent Rib, and you can get scope mounts that attach directly to the vent rib
also there is even a red dot out there that will attached driectly the the Vent Rib with no extra mounting hardware needed
My female friend went to a gun shop, and the salesperson gave her a list of the pistols she should be getting. G19, Sig365, walther pdp.. she had an 8 option list. I took her to the range with some of the options she had, I even took some 380s. She wasn't having a good time, neither good groups. I then let her use my WaltherP22. She loved it and was hitting bullseye every time. She was finally convinced that was the pistol she wanted. So yeah, for first-time shooters, a 9mm or even 380 could be a little intimidating, but 22LR is a good start to build confidence and learn the fundamentals. Good video. Thanks for posting.
Good on you for showing her options. A lot of gun dealers get discounts or even a free gun if they sell so many of a particular model. She’s lucky to have a good friend. Cheers 🍻
I think thats more of trigger pull
Agreed! I find the smaller they are, the more meticulous you have to be with your technique. Thanks for watching.
One thing I found when I was reloading with the intent of putting rounds through the “A Zone” of cardboard targets was each one of my 9mm handguns (with longer barrels) liked a different combination of bullet weight, bullet shape, powder charge, and powder type. One was just as happy with 115gr WWB or S&B as anything I could brew up, others preferred 124gr or even 147gr. I suppose that one of these days if I get bored I could try something similar to what is in the video with a P938 and a M&P Shield 9 with some 115 gr S&B, 124 gr Winchester NATO, and some old 147gr Federal I have around here, although it would be little more than an academic exercise. I view the key test for a micro compact is whether I can put a full mag of my carry ammo inside of the 9 ring under range conditions with zero malfunctions. If I can’t, I need more range time or possibly different ammo (particularly if there are feed issues).
One of these days I’m going to starting loading handgun rounds. I do find it fascinating how one gun will shoot a particular line so well while others can be so problematic. For me this comparison was just to see if there were any visible differences big enough to persuade me to pick one over the other. Perhaps at 15, 20, or 25 yards there would be. But shooting at those distances in a real life situation would be hard to win a self-defense case. Besides, the micro-compact variants are not made for those distances. I have two full 50 cal cans of 115gr and 124gr, respectively, before picking up my Max9. The question of which grain it likes more has been gnawing at me for almost a year. Now I have it answered and showed some folks what I did. Thanks for watching. Cheers 🍻
👍
Sorry, but off hand shooting proves---you don't know much.
Thanks! I see where you are coming from. Yes a bench rest would have provided a more controlled environment. So would have a sunny day with zero humidity at zero elevation. I don’t own a bench rest so if you would like to donate one please send me an email. But an artificial support would have done no good for me in this test. It’s 5 and 7 yards. I’m purposefully including my margin of error as a shooter in this test for self-defense. I’m not a champion, but I am pretty good. And I know the accuracy of that firearm. It does no good to test the accuracy of a football out a machine if I’m not accurate at throwing a football. Besides, where’s the fun in shooting with a bench rest? Cheers 🍻
It's 5 yards . But your shooting off hand ! A machine rest or at least off a bench would give a better result !
Thanks for watching and contributing. I’ll consider buying a bench rest. But it is 5 and 7 yards. No fun with a support. Cheers 🍻
Picked up a P22Q this summer. Love it. Hates CcI stingers Likes Federal Champion 50 box Likes aguila Super Extra Loves Federal Punch. Tools & Targets has a ton of testing videos on it. Id hate to get hit by multiple strikes of Punch 22lr. Have fired 400+ so far, zero issues Will try CCI Velocitor next
Win tin tin 😉
Owning a Walther P22CA has been nothing but problems since day one. Consistent failure to fire and trying CCI, Winchester, Federal ammo and other brands. Consistent lite strikes on the ammo casing failure to fire. Recently replaced firing pin and spring. Went to the range it ran flawless. Next time at the range ( 5days later) and could not get one round to fire. Same issue lite firing pin sticks. Dis-assemble the gun again and see what happen and will test it at the range next week (09 Sept 2024). I wouldn't recommend the Walther for EDC. Too many failures to fire. I did some research on RUclips and I'm finding the problem is more wide spread than I thought.
Think of one for my wife, but this is my concern. I had the same issue with the S&W AR style .22. Every other round is a failure even after warranty work from the factory. Wasted money on a gun that can’t be trusted.
Great video, and thank you for making me feel so comfortable in choosing this gun because its what i purchased today, i was shown many other guns but thank god i did a bit of research and i felt very comfortable with the 22.😊
You made a good choice. Find ammunition that shoots 1200 fps or more. CCi velocitor or CCi Stingers are a great choice, but if you can't find these, Remington GoldenBullet works for me. Don't use low velocity or lead round nose. They typically make your P22 to have malfunctions. Be safe.
This weapon has issues of you happen to get ome where the frame is too thin and when firing expands ever ao slightly that the spring for the slide lock lever falls behind the lever bar and now you have issues..
This upgrade makes night and day difference and definitely helped improve accuracy! Can shoot all day with no fear of recoil punch!!
Glad to hear it!
I learned from this video to X the rubber bands of the scope covers, thanks! 😂 (Just kidding, great review 😂)
I knew there would be someone who found that Easter egg! Thanks for watching.
That thing is a POS...
Facts! It's functions and design depend on the frame holding everything together on a setting polymer block. That frame flexes and now you have a slide lock that's malfunctioning along with the take down lever for the take down pin. Please no one trust this with your life for a ccw even if ruger fixed it! Mine although it is being fixed I'm juat going to have it as a collection gun. We all have that one pos in our safe..
What about a vent hanger?
Sure a vent hanger would work too. But I prefer a more permanent solution. To each there own though, brother. Thanks!
Thanks for your post on the Walther P22. I have the Walther P22Q and mine came with three 10-round magazines. It's one of my favorite handguns.
@@Me2Lancer I have had mine for about a month and have shot it at my range a few times in this span with nary an issue. I even put a compensator on it and I'm loving the results. It has fired everything from CCI mini mags to Winchester Thunder w/o any issues. I had a bit of anxiety after reading about FTF or FTE problems ( mainly with the older pp22) but I've been pleasantly impressed.
Damn 3 mags? That’s nice! Mine came with 2. I’ve been meaning to buy more but whenever I look Walther is out. I guess it’s about time I look again.
I just picked up a walther p22 and I haven’t gotten to fire it yet. I’m excited and can’t wait to head on down to The gun range!! I agree with everything you’re saying how it is a really good beginner entry level firearm. Especially for the gals that are a bit timid to firing higher calibers!
Thanks for watching. Get on out there! But it’s a good idea to clean it first. Even though it’s brand new. That packing oil is sticking and can cause malfunctions. I always clean my new guns before their first range trip. Unless I forget.
I was smart enough to pick up a semi-auto rifle before my state went fascist and banned "assault weapons" but wasn't smart enough to pick up a semi-auto shotgun. Now I'll have to wait several years for the courts and bureaucracy to catch up and strike down such unjust laws. Sigh. Regardless, I just bought one of these to tide me over (though I haven't gotten it yet due to "waiting period"). Good to know about the recoil issue. Going to get one of these pads.
I feel your frustration! Tyranny sucks. Thanks for watching and enjoy your new Keltec. I love mine!
Thanks
I have a Walther pq 22 waiting at my FFL.I got a pretty good deal ($214 otd) and the Walther name sold me. I've never fired a 22 cal but decided to buy one to save on range ammo as 9 mm gets pricey. Thing is I'm a relatively new shooter at 68, so I depend on reviews like this.I hope I have better luck with ammo,as some say it is brand specific, then some say theirs eats anything.I hope I fall into the latter category. Also I've heard that Walther has ironed out many of the FTF issues inherent to the P22,with the newer PPQ model.Good luck.
I appreciate you watching and I’m glad I could be of help. Welcome to the world of shooting! I truly hope you enjoy your new Walther. Just a tip, it’s always a good idea to clean a brand new firearm. That shipping oil is sticky to prevent rusting. It can cause FTF and FTE. I always clean my guns before their first range trip. Unless I forget.
Thanks for sharing. Go Navy! I'm carrying my Taurus 856 at this moment.
Go Navy! Thanks for watching. It’s so comfortable even without a holster, just in my pocket. But a leather holster completes its so well. 👍🇺🇸
@@FirstNatureBackland I'm carrying my Taurus 856 in a leather holster at this moment.
Gun shops don't show this firearm to new females because Walther doesn't pay off gun stores like Glock and S&W
Excellent point! Incentivized sales is a part of the industry.
I have two and they are a pos
This was my first pistol. They guy who sold it looked upset that I was more interested in this than a Glock. The thing was a Glock is way too fat for my hands.

Could you please recommend where I can purchase the vertical grip and slide
I don’t have a vertical fore grip or an aftermaket pump. So I cannot make an honest recommendation on either. But there are multiple options online.
Maddy’s a little camera shy! Great job on leveling her up from a 22. Great video!
Just got the ruger max 9. Solid. My wife loves it also.ty for this video.
I'm getting up in years and I have been shooting 55 years, revolvers and service automatics. I got my first Micro 9mm and it was like what the hell! I actually had to use technique to comfortably rack the slide because it was about 35Lbs or more of effort, but I'm sure it's +P rated. Like lifting a fallen over motorcycle, technique can help but a beginner should start out with a light motorcycle in my opinion. Another 20 years and my carry pistol might be my plinker, at least it will be well known.
Yes sir, there are some great micro 9mm pistols out there, but they all give the perception that they are “easy” to load, “easy” to fire, “easy” to handle. And while that might not be difficult for some, it is not “as easy” as it is in a larger platform, just due too its size. Similar to lifting something that is 50lbs and the size of a shoebox versus something 50lbs and the size of a sofa. The size alone makes it difficult and awkward to handle, dare I say unsafe. Like you said, technique must then be more closely examined and carefully focused on just to prevent a back injury. All because of its size. Great comment and thank you for watching!
