Eugene Sledge and Sidney Phillips are two of the greatest men to grace the city of Mobile Alabama. Every time I watch “The Pacific” I get a swelling of pride that I grew up in and share the same city with those 2 great men.

Throwing pebbles into each other’s Kevlar’s while posted up was primal instinct. Strait Cave Man shit. We love throwing pebbles like little mortars. The best part is watching the guy wake up from some zzz’s and 50 pebbles fall out of his helmet when he goes to put it on and they all go down his flak the neck protector like a funnel. I had a pebble in my ass crack one time and it sucked. Lodged in my skivvies.

To every officer in every army in the world, or every person planning to become an officer, I order you: aim to become an officer that inspires such devotion and respect that someone writes these words about you one day. It's not about forcing people to salute you. It's about being so good to them that they want to. Rest in peace.

fighting in the tropical environment is literally nightmare in all aspect, I live in Vietnam and I know how unmerciful tropical climate can be. I think the war in the pacific is horrendous than any other theatre in ww2, anyone who say eastern front is worse is pure russian-ass-kissing bullshit

My step dad was in the navy during ww2. He rarely talked about it but when he did, i couldn't even comprehend it. I was 11. He lost a toe due to a grenade, and much of the skin on the outer side of his leg up past the knee. Could see the bone where the skin healed around it.

A great presentation! A+ With the Old Breed should be mandatory reading for every high school or college kid. And this segment really captures the profound humanity and decency of Sledge. To have regard and compassion for the enemy amidst such savage fighting shows E.B. Sledge's heroism: he was truly a great man. Again, well done on juxtaposing the film with the book!

Can you imagine millennials fighting this war? I just watched a video of a modern soldier today loading a mortar with a live round. It was like watching a limp dingus scared to go into a vageen. We’re so screwed if something pops off. The millennial generation didn’t even play pretend war as children because our society deems it wrong and too violent. Good lord please help us.

First off: AMAZING prosthetic/mannequin for the Japanese soldier with the open skull. Second: I LAUGHED out loud when I saw this: I was like "yeah... yeah that... that makes sense. Surprised his head is still on his neck". GOD Rami Malek was brilliant in this series.

Has anyone had the insight to think why marines are so badass, is because they actually suck at combat. I mean, they needed army support in most of thier operations. Fyi...marine operations in Afghanistan and iraq were complete trash and meat grinders.

E.B. Sledge taught at the university I attended. I read his book in the mid-1980s and stopped by his campus office to ask him to sign it. He did and we had a please conversation. A very friendly man. I never had a class with him as the instructor. He was well known on campus and as a professor he had a reputation as tough but fair. About 20 years later I was watching a history of the Marine Corps on the History Channel and he was interviewed in the show. I told my wife that Doctor Sledge was on TV and she joined me watching his interview. Then they had footage of his funerial. It was very sad to learn of his passing right after the joy of watching him talk.

"If the country is good enough to live in, then its good enough to fight for". Why? Why would you fight for some dirt, and kill other humans? I don't understand this concept. Why do you think the enemy fights? What has happend that people kill each other? Why should your good neighbor break into your house, that make no sense. If your neighbor does these things, he has a very... very good reason. Remember this always!
