I assume based on the machines that you are rebuilding, that you are in the UK. Any chance you can do some voice over as to what you are doing and why? What the machines are and why you are using which grinding wheels for what. I think you'll get a lot more subscribers.

How much material can you remove from the bed of these machines before the induction layer is compromised? I have a Triumph 2000 and a M500 and wondered how deep the induction harding actually is.
it varies but 40-60 thou is typical so deep enough not to worry about, you'd also need to build up with turcite long before that which even if you had broken through the hardening would give a better bearing surface

Are you grinding with diamond wheels? Which grit? I have a Colchester Mascot that needs some TLC and right now I bought some silicon carbide cup wheels. Never really thought about diamond. Perils of self taught. Know a little, but not enough! Mark
I'm using CBN wheels in this video. Diamond wheels aren't used. The theory being the diamond reacts with the carbon in the cast iron. Silicon carbide wheels should be a good choice.

The machine is a Churchhill VB slideway grinder specifically designed for this sort of work. It was partly rebuilt two years ago and periodically checked with a auto-collimator so yes I do trust it

@@sodium.carbide It can very much if not managed, if there's a lot of material to remove I'll rough the bulk off and go do something else for a while until the heat has dissipated, the dust extractor moves a lot of air which helps and there's a few tricks of the trade

How do you replace the plastic underneath the saddle?
It's a bearing material (turcite-B). It's glued in with a specialised epoxy.
@joecorner8974 that's awesome. We've got a harrison m390 at work. The material had worn so low that the half nut was riding on the lead screw and leaving grooves on the work piece. We got some pvc plastic strips, cut a oil groove in them and glued them in. It's worked really well, but it's made the carriage stiffer to move.
Fascinating to watch. Thanks for posting. I have a couple of questions: That looked like a machine with a lot of wear, and seems bigger than some of the other jobs you've posted. Whats the elapsed time to do one of those jobs, i.e set up time, measurement, grind, refinish up to final acceptance by the op.? You seemed to scrap in some of the ways, presumably for oil retention; do you do all of them, or what the customer asks for, who decides? This is great stuff. And yes i do have a lathe, and yes it will probably need something like this, so you are attracting customers by doing this stuff! thanks again.
This one was fairly worn. There was about 15 thou taken off the bed. The whole job was done within 10 days but I was doing other jobs as well. There is about a working week of time in the job.

Do you have to build up the underside of the saddle so that the apron fits to the correct height for the rack/leadscrew engagement? Obviously dependant on the amount of bed wear Beautiful work btw
In most cases, you can't remove material from above the apron due to cross slide feed gear engagement. Dependant on customer's budget and amount of wear, turcite B can be used to replace worn/removed material.
I wish I had my old well worn Harrison L5 lathe that I once cherished. It'd be on your grinding machine right now. Enjoyed your video. Top job........... Tony

Yes, that's what the machine is design for.
mmmmmm shiny. i got a harrison, it's a bit longer in the tooth tho. don't know if it's even worth regrinding. would you bother with an old L5?
I’m quite happy with my L5, L00 spindle though. Maybe yours is threaded? It came out of a high school so in some ways it was abused, badly, but it’s also very accurate. The DRO, central lube and guarding help I think. This is to say, run what ya brung, whether that’s used as is, or rebuild. Idk, cost can be prohibitive. Anyway, fellow L5 owner here just saying hi 👋
L5 aren't a bad machine. Depends on the machine spec and what areas need attention but probably worth it.
Turned a thousand euro lathe into a 10 thousand euro lathe .. with a paint and some new cogs and bearnigs ..wow...
I don't think an M300 will fetch €10K, no matter how good it is.

I'm curious as to set-up, long ago I ground aircraft cranks, hot rods, to large diesels, then over the decades I taught myself machining by collecting. This is the first video that, as far as I can see, is holding the work as I think it should be done, correctly. I have a planer and mill, both 1x1x3 feet envelope. I would assume that the bottom of a lathe bed would be alike the centers on a crankshaft and possibly held downward without distorting the work, loading, but most other objects should only be trapped horizontally, floating, with minimal downward force. And, place shims in places not in contact with the platten. Is this generally how it is done? Just watching reminds me of the boomerang kid on Mad Max wanting the music toy.

@@taffbatsIt depends, this machine didn't need a lot taking off so didn't warrant the additional expense, its not recommended for tailstocks, better to shim,

It would have to be flooded or it would turn to a paste and clog the wheel. This machine was not designed to use coolant. It would likely cause damage and would make a lot of mess. There are better ways at least for this type of setup to deal with swarf (chip) evacuation and heat management
Price nd place
UK midlands, with milling machine tables it is usual to do the way side as well as the table surface, they often warp over time from over tightening and bad or wrong sized T-nuts crimping the top of the table, it will depend on how much needs taking off, a rough idea would be £250-£300

Im not sure when Colchester started hardening there beds but this one was, early ones may have bean fame hardened rather than induction hardened
