When I worked at VSC Clapham junction, opened in stages 1980 it was a Disaster! Contractors installed cheap substandard relays which kept failing, constant points track circuit failures. ASE was 'Wrong man for the job'had to be paid off, replacement narcissistic told by Chairman BR Board that he was to be sacked in 6 months time unless failure rate dropped, made lots of recommendations to reduce failure rate, 2 were carried out, wrote that all 4 men on mtc faulting shift had to do outside work, previously top grade didn't want to do outside work, 2nd recommendation can't say but improved railway operations considerably. ASE bought in man from Swanley led a task force team, found lots of equipment faults reduced failure rate.

"ESIPS" was the scheme that established the new Swindon B Integrated Electronic Control Centre (a.k.a. 'Swindon Megabox'). The resignalled area replaced the Didcot panel position within Reading Signal Box, which had controlled it since 1965. Uffington's goods loops shown at the start of Part 1 were in fact subsequently removed, as they were too short for the long trains serving Didcot Power Station with imported coal via Avonmouth and had only 25mph entry and exits. Shortly after comes the reinstated relief lines (taken out in 1965) from Challow to Wantage Road, making the 4 mile stretch a four-track railway again. Not many people know this, but as the main commissioning weekend for "ESIPS" happened over 31 March/ 1 April 1994, Didcot was the only major signalling scheme to be commissioned under British Rail and accepted into service by Railtrack. Safety assurance paperwork galore!

Oh what a fabulous look back to the prime of my life; the year I left college. What a marvellous trip of nostalgia! The suits, haircuts, ties, vehicles and of course rolling stock liveries. Thoroughly enjoyed this. Gut-wrenching to realise that, with all this investment, reorganisation and optimism, it was all over just a few years later. What a loss of a national asset. Nothing to have replaced it either. One giant step back for the UK ... again.

I enjoyed my time in Red Star parcels. I well remember the PBM computer being foisted on an older generation of clerks some of whom found computers baffling. I thought the PBM system (seem but not mentioned in this film) was excellent and easy to use. Many happy memories bought back for me here (apart from the management BS). It was a shame it came to an end!

In 1969, I'd love to know how many collieries had the bunkerage and loading facilities to load a complete train in one operation. I worked in three collieries, where the waggons were all split into groups (often 6) for shunting by the NCB's own shunting locos. The only place I worked where they didn't split the train had a new loading facility installed at great expense three years before they declared the colliery uneconomic. By the mid 80s the trains could consist of 45 waggons and haul just short of 1,500 tonnes. I do believe the 1960s and 70s built 2GW power stations all had the facility to handle MGR trains.

Triffic..... all about freight & the sound of an HST at the beginning! This aside, having started on the system in 1975, and been through all the changes, this is brilliant. Just shows how rail is better than road, and in future this will tip over to rail more and more. The best thing about TLF was ,it worked & it worked well. Of course, all good things get ruined, and thanks to privatisation that's exactly what happened. Great video.

Given away for peanuts by John Major.... and the Queen made him a Sir I'd have thought 10 years in the Tower of London would have have been more appropriate for him....as a prisoner not a new job as a Beefeater!

I like the way that he makes out sectorisation was to make it easier to move things when infact it was really a pre privatization plan.As for new sign posts and liveries he's right about that as Trainload, Regional Railways and Railfreight kept the BR symbol on their trains but NSE and Inter City soon replaced by BR double arrows with the Swallow and NSE coloured box.I think that Maggie's plan was to privatize BR as it's sectors but along came Sir John Major and it got even more complicated but the Queen still made him a Sir when a jail term would have been more appropriate!
