if that wood was painted, bury the ash away from your plants. If you can get horse or cow manure, get a ton and let it rot down util Spring, if you put it on a tarp or plastic and cover it you can capture the "juice" and use it as a liquid manure.

The best advice that I found out the hard way was before you lay out the plot it’s best to keep the paths as grass. If you use chippings as a path you will forever have to pull up weeds or use “plastic” membrane everywhere which I don’t recommend. The grass will take over naturally and the weeds don’t matter as you just cut them up with a mower/strimmer. The only power tools I’d invest in is a cordless lawnmower & Strimmer set. It makes life a lot easier. Plus it depends how much time you have to spend up there.
@@Jim804 brilliant thank you, I’ll definitely keep that in mind.. what about laying cardboard instead of plastic?
@ I’ve tried it all. But if we’re on the same page don’t bother laying cardboard for the paths then placing wood chips down, I promise you the weeds will come through within the first year, you won’t surpress them for long & it’s a lot of work. Cardboard for the veg beds is okay, but it only works if you have loads of mulch, I.e leaf, bark, wood chippings, compost. And I mean loads & a constant supply to top up. Again It’s a lot of time & energy. And plastic just suffocates the ground underneath as it’s detached from The surface and will leach into the soil, plus you still get weeds growing on top of the membrane. Trust me use grass paths so you just concentrate your time maintaining your beds. Don’t worry too much about weeds in the path. The grass will naturally dominate and mowing them is the quickest & easiest way of maintaining a plot. Plus you can use the clippings around your veg patches as a mulch to help surpress the weeds to a certain degree so you don’t even have to worry about composting or getting rid of grass clippings. If you invest in a cordless mower & strimmer yes you take a risk of you leave them in a shed (if you have one) but just take the batteries home with you as they need charging and are nearly half of the cost of buying the tools in the first place. (I go on a bit I know 🤣)
@ no it’s great and I’m so grateful for your words of wisdom! I’m open to hearing it all. Okay, definitely but my ground isn’t that grassy? Would you suggest getting grass seeds and making it a lawn between the beds? The beds I was thinking about leaving them just open with no barriers around them, would you suggest small low raised beds so that the grass doesn’t start growing in the beds when I cut it etc? Thank you, I just feel like grass spreads quickly so when I’m cutting it will it not germinate in the beds and create weeds?
@@libbybrenna I suggest you clear the area completely first. Then get the whole area as flat as possible if it’s not already. This is hard work but it pays off in the long run as it’s easier to maintain. I would dig over where you want your beds at about 4ft wide and as long as you want so you can easily work around it without having to walk over the bed all the time, plus keep a path gap of around 3ft between beds. Don’t bother with raised beds with wood. I’ve tried it and personally it’s not worth while, they harbour slugs and snails and rot sooner that you think unless it’s treated but then do you really want those carcinogenic chemicals leaching into your soil. Grass seed won’t grow until may or June time and really it’s best put down in autumn when the ground gets wet again after summer. If you do it that way you could use edging shears around your beds instead of investing in a strimmer. If you get a mower then don’t worry what grows up around your path areas as the mower will cut any weeds that come through for the mean time and put grass seed down (if it hasn’t already naturally established) in the late autumn. Grass won’t grow any quicker than any other weed. You’ll always need to weed beds, but the grass by the edge is easier to maintain than anything else. I never mentioned, I love your enthusiasm and look forward to seeing your progress. Good Luck 🤞
Watch “edge control over advancing grass by Charles Dowding” he mentions he’d never use grass between beds but I only disagree with him there as he gardens on a huge scale, plus he has a team working for him I believe.
Aww my favourite little bird ❤
Libby are you back 👍
@@williamcosgrove9696 oh I sure am! In full swing 💃
Why don't you just get lots of big cardboard boxes and after you clear it all and do a no dig garden just cover the carbord with compost and manuer save ya back digging
I think this is the plan, especially as I have some huge boxes I’ve just flattened! Thank you so much for the support on my video, it’s appreciated ☺️

Wow Libby - what a difference in just one visit. That must make you feel good. Nice to get help from Charlie too. That's what I love about my allotment - so many friendly people around that are willing to help when it's needed. I guess you'll be able to cover some of that new ground you've cleared now so that the weeds will die off for next year. I reckon you've got a friend in Foxy - especially if you make him a bird table and feed him. Enjoying watching your progress. Cheers.
Ahhh thanks Steve, it’s feeling amazing, really beginning to see the progress and fruits of my labour now.. I’ve been consistently showing up and I can see the rapid improvement.. foxy is a special little friend, I bought a seed mix and going to make a little bird house. Thanks for your continued support on my channel, it’s means a lot 🌷💕
Great job it would be so nice if all the allotment gardens can burn their dirt. You accomplished a lot with Charlie's help....thanks Charlie
Yeah it would be good wouldn’t it, HUGE thanks to Charlie xx
I thought this was just gonna be clickbait, but you have actually transformed it.
Ohhhh nooo, no click bait here hehe.. Thanks for your support on my channel, it’s much appreciated 🌷💕 so much more to come ☺️
when i was young gardener i hated wearing gloves my hands for years had ground in soil in them, the ash from your fire can either go in the compost heap or can be dug into the soil but becareful of nail, screws they need to be removed from the site
Totally relatable.. do you have a really good immune system? I’ve seen studies that when people’s hands are in contact with the soil often it gives them great immunity.. would be interesting to hear if that’s relevant for you! Thanks for your support on my channel, it’s much appreciated 🌷💕

Libby, I love what you’ve done with the allotment and I love watching your channel ❤️
Ahh thank you so much! Really appreciate that ♥️
Thanks Libby. All really good sound advice. Your last big point i would agree is probably the most important - covering up areas of the plot until you have time to start working it. I bought a huge roll of black plastic from Screwfix - it was 25 meters long x 4 metres wide (expensive I know at £55 but it has been a game changer). This covered a huge area for about 12 months: when I start to uncover it bit by bit, the weeds have completely disappeared, and then it's so easy to prepare the planting beds. Cheers Libby - hope you have a great Christmas 🙂
Wow that’s cool!. A really good investment… thank you so much, appreciate it 🌷

Super job Libby, the more you do,the more addictive it is,it will be awesome!
@@williecollins5833 thank you so much, absolutely agree with you on that ✨ thank you so much ☺️
hi best way is to mark out the area first then dig over with garden fork that way you can remove the roots as you go then you only have to dig out a trench for the wood before adding soil or compost in the raise beds line with news paper this will feed the soil you can also line with grass cuttings, kicthen waste or straw even the compost rule is once it has lived it can live again do you no what type of soil you have ?
@@jimi7255 oooh okay! That’s brilliant thank you so much for sharing your knowledge with me, will absolutely be taking this all on board, no I don’t know what kind of soil I have, how can I find out? My neighbour said that I’ve got really great soil as the man who had it paid a lot of money apparently in making it really good, he said that’s why the weeds grow so much on my plot because the soil is so rich.. that probably doesn’t narrow it down.. haha. Sorry! But when I was digging far it did seem like it had bits of a warm colour clay in the earth.. what would that mean? Thanks for the support! ☺️
Hello Libby. Its good to see you are cracking on. My allotment is on the other side of Beach Road and I've had it for 24 years now and learnt alot over the years. Can I give you some advice. You shouldnt really dig the ground at this time of year as the ground is too wet and all you are doing is compacting the soil which isn't good. Also you need to line those pallet collars with black plastic tarpaulin. If you dont your raised beds wont last long as the pallet collars will rot quickly if not protected from the soil. I hope this helps. The best advice I got when I first got my allotment is that Rome wasn't built in a day. Take your time and you'll get there. Also just keep watching what your nieghbour Bob does. He'll keep you reet. Crack on!
Hiya Dave, Thank you, you too! Ahh lush. 24 YEARS! incredible, absolutely open to your advice, thank you so much for that, i didn't know that so i'm grateful you shared that with me, will defo get on to that with the inner collars! Is there anything you would recommend that i do this time of the year? I'm going to build the lower beds this week, should i line those too? and gonna bark the path in between them. My neighbours are great! Haha thank you! i'd love to come visit your plot and pick your brains! or come over to mine and share some ideas.. Thanks Dave, chat soon ✨🌽
@libbybrenna Hi Libby. I replied to your roply last night but it mustn't have sent as I can't see it. I could have sworn it said sent. Anyway, I was saying there is plenty you can be getting oncwith during the winter. Set out all you pallet collars and line them with plastic. If you are making smaller raised beds also cover those with plastic otherwise they wont last long. Also dont do no dig. The soil you have is good soil. Our allotments have been worked for over 100 years and also buying a load of compost to cover perfectly good soil will be expensive. Just keep an eye on what Bob does and he'll keep you reet. Just crack on with making the pallet collar beds over winter and put the wood chips down for paths in between. You are welcome to visit my plot anytime and get some advice n that. I'll get the kettle on. I hope you recieve the reply this time. Crack on!
Hiya Dave! Thanks so much, yeah it didn’t come through but glad this one did, grateful for all your wisdoms shares, I’ll defo get on with what you’ve mentioned, absolutely.. thank you so much! I don’t even know how to get to your side of the allotments, I’ll come over in the new year! Have a lush Christmas and see you soon ✨🌷🥰
