Bro thinks he’s bought an expensive bike 💀
Such an interesting video, keep it up! Love to see your progression and your journey overall.
What an amazing high quality video keep it up man ❤
I have those specialized socks. They actually say spectalized instead of specialized 😂
That's funny 😂 Interestingly though, after this video I did go ahead and buy a real pair of Specialized socks. So now I have a fake pair in grey, and a real pair in gold. But honestly, there's not much between them in terms of quality and functionality between the fake and real pair. I bought the fake pair for a few dollars, whereas the real pair cost me about $15. If I were to buy these socks again, I'd go with the real pair for two reasons: 1. they're very slightly better quality, and 2. I don't like supporting companies pretending to be another company.
Why did you buy an Apple Watch and not Garmin?
Two reasons. 1. The Apple Watch (with the Solo Loop) is more comfortable than any Garmin watch or strap. That for me is a big deal because I hate wearing things. 2. I'm deep in the Apple Ecosystem - I have all the stuff, whereas the only Garmin device I have is a Garmin Edge 840, so the Apple Watch made more sense.
"I didn't buy my swimming coach... I think that's illegal now.." :D
Love the videos would love to see more training videos like another week in the life!
Thanks for the feedback Angela! I actually stopped making the 'day/week/month in the life' videos because my last video - What a Month of Ironman Training Looks Like - didn't perform as well relative to my other videos. So I assumed you guys didn't really like that kind of video! Anyway, I'll see what I can do. I have a few other videos in the pipeline, but I'll add another 'week in the life' video into the mix too. Thanks again for the feedback Angela - it's comments like these that help me plan for future videos :)
Bring back the week in the life / training plan videos. Been good following the series along so far 👍
@ I didn't know you guys liked those day/week/month in the life training videos so much 😆 Noted! I appreciate the feedback.
I ended up spending a lot more than I thought I would when training for my Ironman 70.3. It wasn't until I made this video and listed everything out that I realised how expensive this whole Ironman thing can be! But it doesn't have to be expensive. With a second hand bike, including your ticket, the whole thing can be done for less than $1000. I'm curious, how much did you guys spend for your 70.3 or full Ironman?
Ive started from absolutely nothing. Never ran more than a mile a year and a half ago. Bought everything second hand other than new running shoes. Spent a little under 3000 to do my first 70.3.
@@fpvkauai That was probably smarter than the way I went! It's always somewhat of a risk buying everything at the start, because we don't/didn't know whether we'll actually stick with triathlon training. Particularly the cycling - where most of my money went!
Try the Rockbros air pump, it is much smaller than the Xiaomi meaning you can take it out on rides, in case of random flats.
Ah yeh, I've had a look at those. The one thing that stopped me buying it is that I can't fit it inside my Trek Domane frame storage, whereas a mini bike pump, I can. It's crazy how small the electric pumps are getting though.
Great video first time seeing your channel I hope you do more reviews on AliEpress stuff in the future
Thanks for the feedback Adrian. I have a few more in the pipeline, so stay tuned for them :)
great video and what an improvement on your swimming, congrats !
Thanks fpvkauai, I appreciate it. 4 months after making this video, I still have sessions with my swimming coach twice a week. I'm still making good progress, but the first 30 day 'noob gains' were insane.
good luck on training and your race ! completed my first half on the big island last year, training for my second one in 5 months. my biggest advise would be to try to do some group swims in the open water, get used to swimming with people. I mainly swam in pools and ended up I panicking during my swim and was not able drop control my heart rate or breathing. funny because swam the course no problem the day before by myself. Still finished it but man that swim was long.
That's very good advice! I actually did a 5km Oceanman about 3 months ago. I was very apprehensive because all my swimming training was in a 50m swimming pool - but for the Oceanman I had to swim 5km, in the ocean, with hundreds of other swimmers all around me. It actually ended up going smoother than I thought it would. Although the waves in the ocean were somewhat problematic, the salt water made my body more buoyant which made up for the waves. I ended up finishing the 5km with fuel in the tank left over. So this year, I'll be going for the 10km Oceanman 💪🏼
Nice list. But personally, I wouldn't buy anything to consume food/water from off Aliexpress. No idea what plastic it's made of and if they adhere to any safety standards.
what about ali saddles?
Honestly, I never bothered to upgrade my Trek Domane's saddle because it's quite good already. If I bought a budget AliExpress saddle, it would probably be a downgrade.
@@fitin30challenge thats cool, i bought a full carbon one (k1) in 120mm, having saddle issues a lot unfortunatley. it was around 95€ but need to test it out more. first 15min test was quite nice
I also bought the ENT2.0 in 60mm
Very nice! Why did you go for the 60mm instead of 50mm? I do like how the 60mm look, but I was just a bit concerned about getting thrown around with crosswind. Saying that, I've not experienced that at all with my 50s, so 60s would probably be fine too.
@@fitin30challenge i came from regular alu fulcrum db whatever, and yeah you need to really hold on to the handlebar... it gets scary if 40kmh+ and coming into the winds, sometimes i slow a bit down but its not too bad. i went for the 60mm since where I currently ride its very flat, and I hope that the extra 100-200g wont be too hard on the climbs. so far they do good, front wheel had to be centered after a few rides tho. Not sure how windy it is at your area, so it is noticeable but for me so far all good
I was a pro for 15 years. Dont get hang up with gears too much, 10 years ago 20usd clothing is regarded as excellent already, and then Rapha came along and made it too commercialized. If you want to have a good result on cycling, you have to ride 300-400km a week, there is no shortcut there unfortunately. You need to slam that stem on your bike ASAP if you want to go faster. Always, remember upgrading gears never ends, you just keep spending and thats the last thing you want to do to get better in cycling. Just ride ride ride.
Totally agree with you. I spent quite a bit on gear to get me started, but now I feel I don't need to upgrade - or replace - my gear for a very long time. I will eventually slam my stem. My bike fit mechanic actually recommended it to me, but because I'm prioritising comfort over speed (because I'm not fast anyway so might as well be comfy!), I'm not too bothered about slamming the stem. I will do eventually though - give it 6 months or so when I get a bit faster.
welcome to the cycling world, have fun and you should certainly try a group ride.
Enjoy your new bike bro. Just be careful with the lock because it can damage your frame. Whenever I'm in the area that I don't trust to leave my bike outside, I'll just ask staff to get my bike to the inside too, and that I can go to toilet and poop in peace. ✌
Very good point! I'm definitely in the honeymoon phase with my bike, so it would hurt if I got the frame scratched up! One reason why I chose the Plasma Grey Pearl (white) Trek Domane over the Matte Deep Smoke (matte black) is because I didn't want fingerprints, scuffs and scratches showing up every other ride.
Welcome to cycling and that’s a sweet bike! Just have fun with it and who cares about wattage. The goal is to have fun.
Thanks Ruke! I agree - I'm not fussed about speed right now, I'm just having fun riding.
you saying domanee somehow triggers something in me great video tho👍
I hope I'm pronouncing it right 😅
Bought a bike but can’t even sustain 300w average. Smh
My ride today was an average power of 106w 🤧
I would recommend buying more bibs, so you won’t wear and wash same one multiple times. Btw great bike. Once you wear the groupset, you can upgrade to 105di2. Also keep maintaining you wheel hubs. Sorry for so many suggestions
That's a good point on the bib shorts. I'll eventually end up getting a couple more pairs, but since I only ride about twice a week, just one main pair is fine for now. If the main pair is in the wash and I need some urgently, then I'll make do with my super uncomfortable Decathlon bibs.
Just the way you compared zipp wheels to more affordable wheels, clothes are same. Look for brands like Monton. I have tried maap, pns, rapha and there is not much difference except price. Btw, did you buy a tri-suit yet?
I've not tried Monton before but I'll keep an eye out for them. I've honestly not tried on that many brands - Maap, Rapha, a few mid-range brands, and an embarrassingly large number of cheap AliExpress brands.
Are the prices you mentioned in US dollars or any other dollar currency ?
All in USD.
Another purchase to consider is clip on aero bars. Being able to move in and out of the aero position really helps with comfort during long rides. I dreaded my weekly 3+ hour training rides before getting aero bars. Keep it up 👍
Good point! I do remember reading somewhere (maybe on Reddit) that clip-on aero bars are one of the best bike accessories you can buy in terms of 1. improving comfort but also 2. improving speed when doing the cycling part of the Ironman. I will eventually buy some - maybe in a couple of months.
As I have my first Ironman 70.3 in 5 months, I started running and swimming, but eventually it was time to buy my first road bike and get into cycling. These are the 32 bike 'things' I bought over the last 2 months to get into cycling. 👉Watch all my Ironman 70.3 training videos here -> bit.ly/3Tcc9Dj
highly recommend the mini electric pump vs the hand pump.
Yep me too. Pros are that it's easier than pumping - just plug it in and press a button - and it's smaller than a hand pump. Cons are that because it's electric, it may be less reliable than a hand pump, and will need charging every few months. Overall, I'd highly recommend it. I love Xiaomi stuff too. I have two of their air purifiers, hair dryer, and a few other gadgets, and they're all well-built.
@@fitin30challenge I meant the mini battery one, the one you can take on a ride with you, instead of the mini hand pump:) for emergencies.
Really been enjoying your series, I’m doing my first 70.3 next year. What model is your trek? Is the the Emonda? Thanks
Elitewheels are great, i've had them for the last 2 years now and they're fantastic
Only had mine a month now but super happy with them too.
Great advice 😊
Magnetic cables are more waterproof. No holes for water to get in. Same as SHOKZ headphones. Works for me. Cheers
Very good point! Didn't think of that.
HELP! at 12:12 in this video you show a double Garmin style head unit mount. I can see a Garmin type computer on the top and then underneath that there's a second Garmin style mount where your MagicShine Alty light is mounted right side up. I have a Garmin style out front mount on my bike and it only has the "GoPro" type mount on the underside, this allow me to attach my MagicShine, but it's upside down and so the light pattern is wrong as well as the power/brightness is also on the bottom. Can you tell me/us what that mount is on your Trek bars? Very curious! Thanks - C.
I have the Trek Blendr system, in particularly, these components: - Trek RCS Pro Stem Blendr Duo Base - Trek Blendr Garmin Low Mount - Trek Blendr Garmin High Mount
Those specialised socks aren't real, i have some 'Rapha' ones. They are excellent though!
Ah, good to know. Since making this video, I have actually bought some gold Specialised socks (which definitely are real), and there's not that much difference between the fake and the real. The real were not that much more, so unless you were on a super tight budget, I'd just go straight for the real stuff.
that was picture of IM 70.3 Da Nang. I live in Da Nang. Have you been here before?
Never been before, but I will be heading there in May for my 70.3 ;)
@@fitin30challenge Good luck mate. I took part the last 2 years only was able to finish the race the 2nd time this year. First year I got DNF'd for swimming. I under estimated how long it takes to learn swimming as an adult for someone who has never been inside a pool or sea before. Was first though. Last year I had severe cramps so had to ride slower than my training rides and had to almost walk/limp to the finish line. If you need any info about Da Nang, especially related to the course, etc. let me know.
Good luck with the training, go get it 💪
Thanks Stu, and thanks for subscribing :D
Good advice mate. Subscribed 🎉🎉
Thanks Hamster <3
Lovely looking Domane, I myself went with a Reacto 5000 and sized down to a 52
Very nice bike! Quite a bit faster than mine. The Domane is a heavy lump!
Keep it up, just did my first a month ago and IT IS AWESOME. My advice: 1. Get a coach - could just be TriDot, Trivelo or any other app. Even just a program online, but get some sort of structure. 2. Schedule solid recovery time - i.e. if you have a solid 1M block of training, schedule a peak week with tests or smthg like that and then rest, your body will thank you but your mind will thank you even more 3. Don't be hard on yourself. I can't recall how many times I thought it was too much and I couldn't do it, in the end it all worked great, so just trust the process and take it easy. 4. Focus on swimming but not over focus, in the end it's going to be max an hour and then you still have 4-6 hours more, so give it some respect, swim the distance and instead of doing 3+ swims a week, do 1-2 and replace with a bike/run 5. BRICKS, tons. 6. Nutrition, practice it
thank you man
You're welcome :)
Great bike choice! I just bought the same bike last week!
Oh nice! Have you bought any upgrades for it?
Find a local bike shop and then buy your bike online 😅
I bought the bike at my local bike shop, but they had to order it in because they didn't have stock ;)
@1:39 actually, 70.3 swim is 1.2miles.... so 1900m Even 10 months to prepare is short for a full Ironman if you are starting near zero. Definitely plan doing a half (70.3) beforehand. And practice the fourth discipline, nutrition. Your body only has usable glycogen storage (available energy) for about 2 hours. Find a source of calories that you can still easily digest during the race without upset stomach etc. Feel free to reach out, 13x IM finisher...
Lets go!
🎉
Love the journey. Keep it up mate
Thank you, I appreciate the support 🙏🏼
Love these kind of videos. I've got the elitewheels ent 2.0 as a second wheelset for my gravel bike and they are so good. My next step will be building a road bike around them. I really hope they keep these quality products at low prices and don't go the premium only route.
Yeh when my bike shop said I'd have to spend $1000+ on carbon wheels, I was slightly disappointed because I'd already spent $4k on the bike, and now I'd have to dish out another $1k. Very happy to have stumbled across EliteWheels though. Like I said in the video, they saved me a lot of money!
