Split Enz : Haul Away
I was born in Te Awamutu, 25th of June 1952
Ten pounds of boy
Haul away, haul away, haul away
My mother and father's pride and joy
Richard and Mary, drink to my journey
Haul away
I left home at the age of thirteen
Went to boarding school on a scholarship
Small fish, big sea
Haul away, haul away, haul away
No more happy childhood days for me
Catholic condition
Strength thru exhaustion
Haul away
At 21, I was thirsting for experience
and my brain was about to burst
Stare at the rug
Haul away, haul away, haul away
That novel approach worked like a drug
Nothing was different
Everything changed then
Haul away
Years ago in an Auckland flat this odyssey began
Motivates me still, Northward I'm bound
Haul away, haul away,...

Split Enz : Time for a Change

You act as though You were a blind man who's crying Crying `bout, all the virgins that are dying In your habitual dreams You know, seems you need more sleep But like a parrot in a flaming tree I know, it's pretty hard to see And I'm beginning to wonder if it's time for a change But still you try like a fat boy Dancing Gershwin's blues But you'd rather sit at home and watch the news And I'm begi...
Split Enz : Titus

I found myself in silver dreams I'm talking in my sleep to pawns & queens Outspoken words You know they just don't mean the same thing Somebody must be kiddin' me Somebody must be lying to me Oh please don't tell me Which is red and which is black When are you coming back to me babe Oh when are you coming back to me babe I saw myself in checkered lands I even dreamt I was the knight in command ...
I'm waiting for the Time Bandits to march through the door.
Gotta love the Enz. Best nz band ever....
Is reminds me of Gentle Giant
A sea shanty hiding inside a pop song
Split Enz are the best Aussie band of all
One of their most-fascinating tunes... The polyrhythm of the melody against the rhythmic bed is deceiving, but makes perfect sense. The escalation from a North Atllantic-, even Celtic-sounding folk song, into almost a War Chant, and back again, is like nothing I've ever heard, and sets off the autobiographical lyric beautifully.
I had not heard this in over 30 years. It suddenly popped into my head. Given the age we live in I went straight to RUclips and there it was...

Superb and best version Tim nailed it
Lovely
The whole band should get OBE's for this alone
Nice snare at the beginning...with the snare turned off...then on...🥁
Transitions in life so eloquently and musically expressed. Feeling it as always✨
The way the guitar pops at the end - raw psychic energy, willed, prevailing, triumphant, and transcending. A simply stunning and artful rendering of the human condition. And the pic of Phil on the cover with the God sized hole in his heart - can relate!
Visionary. The whole album is superb.
Beautiful song - so heartfelt. Broken innocence.
Just beautiful....still love to this day! Thank you for including the lyrics!
The version of this song on Mental Notes pushes the Mellotron more, this version pushes the guitar more, although the Mellotron is still present. Both versions are great. It's just such a beautiful song. Both lyrically and musically.
This sounds like Peter Gabriel or even early Phil Collins era Genesis (I know they were in the band together from the beginning but I mean as singers). Superb.
I was born in te Awamutu
Love this tune by Tim. Saw Time and Tide tour concert in Winnipeg, Canada in 82 - awesome live act
Best version EVER!
Reminds me of the Peter Gabriel Genesis era.
they wish they were half as deep as Split Enz on songs like this
love this band they can be so far out and then so surprisingly beautiful.
Great live version of this on the 2 cd best of compilation "Spellbound ".
Love it, love it, love it.....the Phil Manzanera version is epic!
best AUS/NZ prog ever...if you also include BLACKFEATHER's Seasons Of Change Part 1... just gobsmackingly good...MENTAL NOTES should be enshrined....
Sublime
Great beautiful genius music - I cant help feeling a big Gabriel-Era Genesis influence on this track though. Maybe it was the other way around?!? perfectly possible!
10 lb baby is pretty big....How big is this guy anyway?
Unbelievably good!
Pure genius music....introducing some serious musicians to the world!
I would definitely agree that a parrot in a flaming tree is pretty hard to see
I love the Mervyn Peake references and the orchestral musings...
Mental Notes was two of the best albums ever made.
so true bro, i wish more albums had two or more versions, this is my favourite version of titus of the two.
Titus and Sweet Dreams, both Phil Judd gems, are my favorite Split Enz songs. Sheer genius.
this is unique, like a beautiful flower..strange, surrealistic
Phil Judd
Me too duck. It's so evocative and powerfully dynamic. Nothing like it before or since that raises the hairs on the back of my neck. From when Juddy strikes that first power note and ascends the neck.....
deep gitar solo
The chord sequence amazes me. I have heard this dozens of time and it still blows me away. Those vocals.......just perfect.
Noel Crombie would be into it
lol, rolf and tim should do a collaboration maybe, accompaniment including wobbleboard, the thing with stubbie caps etc
this song kinda reminds me of Jethro Tull's "Songs from the Wood" album
It is a masterpiece.
When Phil Judd was in the band they were brilliant.
I had a crush on Phil Judd when I was a teenager :-)
Amazing music! Just genius!
you sound a bit like a queen
its so hard to get ones head around that Phil Judd wrote this when he was only 19 years old...
this song is 100% phil judd..
The drum fill starting at 0:23 reminds me of those British Paints ads with Rolf Harris.
