What about a die grinder with sanding wheels, for rough sanding of 1/4" thick plywood to remove 1/8"~1/4" off the edge? Would that work and if so with what grit grade?

Variable angle grinder is the answer.

buy both and u wont regret it. u know the differences once u owned it. add voltage or speed regulator for the grinder since its too fast for polishing. dont do woodworking if u cant afford to buy these machines. try another hobbies....😁😁😁😁

Please use some sort of clamp, especially when driling thin steel items. When the drill grabs and turns your part into revolving knife you won't have any fingers left for the saw to remove.

For me, i choose the grinder, specially if the grinder has a knob for the speed..

For general purpose I bought a grinder. Grinder can be used for cutting and sanding. Sometimes it is very powerful. But for general purpose grinder is more useful. But for fine polishing sander is suitable. The finest anding paper for grinder is 150 max.

This is on my to do list, I have quoted a few customers on making one, but they rejected. Unfortunately, they do not understand the time that goes into one of these projects. One guy even gave me Lumber and expected it to be done for next to nothing, then asks me to just cut the pieces for him, still want not happy with the quote for labour to do that. Well done. Nice. I did ones with 648 pieces and painted every piece with brush. It was a nice project for my own home. It is very time-consuming and, above all, I had to paint several hundred parts twice. All in all, if I had the time I would do similar projects and recommend it to everyone.

They are for different purposes. Grinder is for deep sanding while buffer is for deep smoothing.
