The Sanctuary by E F Benson (narration only)
“Step by step they dragged him, violently resisting, and now out of the door there came a swarm of large fat flies that buzzed and settled on him. Thicker and thicker they streamed out, covering his face, and crawling into his eyes, and entering his mouth as he panted for breath.”

“A figure inexpressibly thin and pathetic, of a dusty leaden colour, enveloped in a shroud-like garment, the thin lips crooked into a faint and dreadful smile, the hands pressed tightly over the region of the heart.”

You have a lovely storytellers voice! Enjoyed listening to your story telling! Thank you 🎉🎉🎉
complete waste of effort on this guy - I'd have gone for the "odd, questioning eyes" in a heartbeat
Beautifully evocative description of a place we all wish we could return to.
A relatable story for those that grew up equally resistant to the tiresome and stale conventions of traditional expectations, and the hypocrisy and pretension of most common alternatives offered in its place.Because the supposed opposites of one alternative are often, in fact,- even worse.
I know exactly what you mean.
The only narrator on the platform who’s voice acting can so wonderfully induce fear - and so deeply, subtly and consistently in (lucky) us, the listeners. Long time listener. Bravo.
Gosh. Thank you.
Dammit Benson why does it sound like child grooming of a more unsavoury kind???? Great story otherwise, and expertly read as always. 😘
Oh my goodness I never got the notification! I'm wondering if that's happening with other people too. So happy that I found this today!!
Superb....you sir, have the voice!
Certainly this is one of Benson's best stories. However, to better understand the horror that went on in the Sanctuary (Benson does not dwell on details but only hints and suggests) one needs to read the book that Judith and her mother recommended to Francis, namely ‘Là-Bas’ (3:26). Huysmans was a French writer who was very familiar with these matters, he even attended a Black Mass (without actively participating in it, according to him) and in his book he faithfully described these experiences, interspersed with the sad misdeeds of Gilles De Rais, which involved the killing of children. Only after reading this book will Benson's tale acquire a different, more sinister light.
This was absolutely spellbinding, thank you!
I think this is one of E. F. Benson's best stories. The reference to La Bas inspired me to read it and other works by Huysmans.
It is interesting to compare this sombre warning about meddling in the occult with the satirical comedy which E F Benson brings to bear on the subject in the 'Lucia' books. I wonder which reflects his own views? Perhaps both. Thank you for uploading.
Very dark, very chilling, beautifully read.
Top class ghost story. Thank you. I used to read chilling tales like this for entertainment, but now I know that the spiritual battle is real. And praise God, Jesus is real too! 🙏
WHOA! What an absolutely terrific tale. For the first time ever, I've wanted to fast forward the reading to get to the end to see what happened 😂. I didn't, I hasten to add! BUT, I am going straight back to listen to it again, this time with a more 'steady' nerve!! Thank you so, so much Mr Crowest. x
Well, what can I say Richard, but ‘Thank you, Thank you, Thank you’… for a good couple of years or so, I've been looking for, finding and enjoying, good short story audiobooks, to listen to at night and to help with falling asleep. I have found several that have been enjoyable, but also many that I often think ‘Why are they bothering’, as they are so badly narrated. But slowly, as I've searched and found channels with better storytellers, who offer a more eclectic choice in short audio stories, I've been able to narrow the channels, to a small few. Therefore, upon discovering your channel, I was immediately blown away, by not only the stories themselves but also by your fabulous clear, expressive narration. Your tone, speed and clarity, plus the quality of the recording volume levels, is absolutely sublime. It seems you have managed what many cannot. Which is a beautiful balance,on all levels, that of which is needed for a wonderfully enjoyable listen to a bedtime audio story. So again Richard, I ‘Thank you very much indeed.. and I look forward to listening to many more of your beautifully read offerings.
Thank you so much - comments like this really make the effort worthwhile.
An E F Benson tale I haven't encountered before. I have missed your narrations Mr Crowest. Many Thanks!
Brilliant story reading. Thank you 😊
Man this was a weird one-- great but weird
I wonder if Bruce Robinson took the name for the portly, predatory homosexual "Uncle Horace" in "Withnail & I" from this story?
Wasn’t he Uncle Monty? And ghastly though he was I think he was a pussycat compared to Horace Elton!
@@GhostsByRC He was! You're right! I should have checked! As you were reading it all I could see was Richard Griffiths!
😆 If you haven’t seen them, search for the shots from the Star Wars films that people have paired with quotes from Withnail - they’re gold!
Heard this story first time.. Superb narration. Thank you Sir
My, my...how fiction mimics reality. We're living in that reality today!!
Forty years ago, when these eerie stories were light entertainment fur my teenage self, I would never have imagined the level of real, true evil which would make itself obvious and evident in the world. I can only take comfort from the fact that if the devil is real, then so is Our Lord God. ❤️🙏
@@MsDormy Amen!!
A Benson I’ve not run across before. I wish the ending hadn’t been so abrupt. I would like to know if the ghost remained and if Dicky continued to be affected Great reading; love your voice. I am adding you to my favorite narrators of spooky stories. ❤
I totally thought that was Gavin McInnes at first glance 😅 Edit: I like your narration voice, do you only read ghost stories or do you read other horror as well? Perhaps even non horror?
Thank you. At the moment it’s just ghost stories - I started with Benson as I’d got to know him through his social satires, and discovered his ghost stories not long before he came out of copyright. I started the readings in the hope of restarting my voice career, but that ended up happening by other routes. These are just a sideline now, hence them being somewhat infrequent.
creepy! And well done.
As ALWAYS, an EXCELLENT NARRATION.
This would translate perfectly to film!
Oh yes indeed. What a brilliant idea. 😁
You're very good at this ❤
Delighted to hear your voice again! Thank you so much!! 🥰
You’re back😊❤
Well done! Thank you so much.
Fantastic! Great story, beautifully narrated. Just what I needed for my Saturday evening - thank you, Richard!
auto-'like' and save. this one sounds mandatory.
Fantastic thank you !
good to hear from you again Richard
Thanks so much 😊
Awesome!
What an unusual story! Great narration!
Richard, are you going to narrate more audiobooks?
Yes, there will be more, hopefully soon. Thanks for asking - stay subscribed!
Excellent narration! 🙂
Thank you!
Great narration! 🙂
Why have you stopped reading?😢
Thank you Sandhita. I’ve been busy and unwell. Hopefully I’ll get back to it soon.
Thank you Richard. Definitely enjoyed this story and your voice. I can almost picture myself sitting by the fire listening. Bless You and Yours.❤
Excellent vocal technique ... far superior to many of the names trotted out here in comparison. It's a tough profession and a vastly underrated skill as anyone who has tried it can attest. I DID try and failed miserably AFTER telling everyone how easy it would be...!! The Shipping Forecast beckons ..
Thank you so much!
Thank you!
Thank you!
A lot of E.F Benson's stories seem to be set in East Anglia
Several are, yes, along with East Sussex and Cornwall, both areas where he’d lived.
The best bedtime stories
This is a story where it leaves you at the end, thinking. Such was Benson's real genius. He didn't just narrate a tale; he finishes it...and then you are left with.."goodness, I wonder..."
