    I play FFXIV now, but I started on EQ in 1999. I also played dozens of other MMOs but EQ does something other do not, and that working towards a goal. For example, epic weapons. When you do things it has meaning in EQ. This is something other MMOs are missing.

    Aye it's a wonderful mmo with actual role play! The devs have great love and respect for Tolkien, the attention to detail is great even in small Shire quests. Although some features and stories are lorebreaking for gameplay's sake. Many more servers will go 64-bit this year.

    To those who complain about visuals, LOTRO still looks decent when you ReShade it, and fancy visuals never made meh games any better nor do not so fancy ones make a good game bad. Get your priorities right. Every bit of work that goes into graphics doesn't go into mechanics, and those are what matters the most. At least LOTRO has it's own visual identity, something "modern MMOs" don't have, with their blurry HD and visual clutter devoid of any personality.

    bro 20 min into video you havent mentioned first important thing in any rpg....combat. its beyond broken. character movement is glitchy at best, they glide on the surfaces no friction between character feet and surfaced they walk. EVERY part of combat is flashy overly graphical with no actual impact in the damage you do. this game is for the people which are banned from any other competitive games where they cant fathom how to do a simple action yet dance and do emotes dress up etc. i love world of lord of the rings but this game is utter travesty to this name.

    • @MarleMMO
      @MarleMMO 11 дней назад

      We disagree as to what is most important in a RPG, and I intentionally kept combat commentary until a bit later to emphasize combat is not LOTRO's strong suit. 🥰

    I played in 2007/8. I was on the Laurelin server and became an officer in the Baruk Khazad (RP) Kin. I played a LOT during thise early years, and have drifted away since - alrhough I do tend to put in a few hours every year or so. LOTRO has, by far, the best community. It does not have a large player base, but the folks who play are extremely helpful and kind. The one thing you notice is that players will watch you in combat, taking time out of questing to ensure that you win your fight etc. Its a very small thing, but speaks to the strength of the community.

  • @EricJacobson1990

    I love that your character isn't the "Main Character" in Lotro! You're there to help in the fight against the darkness, but it doesn't rewrite or lessen any of the actions of the Fellowship. If anything this game highlights the actions of all the other players in the war against Sauron. Absolutely love it! I got back into the game 3 years ago after I stopped playing it in 2012 to focus on SWTOR. Lotro has kept true to itself all along, and Its awe inspiring. The community is epic! And my main character still hasn't reached level 70 yet! I've been having so much fun.

    I used to play this game. I remember running around smashing things with a mace on a cleric, sword on a paladin, and spells as a wizard. I liked how varied the dungeons were at first. As you went, you ended up feeling like you were repeating yourself. I quit around level 6 because I got bored with it. I have recently picked up Lord of the Rings Online, and that feels more fun to me.

    I used to play AO like 20 years ago and loved it for many years. One of the most fun experiences I had was in an Omni city where a scheduled "in character" event was happening. An admin of some sort was leading some players around, and I forget the exact nature of it all, but he slowly approached me and we went back and forth a bit with in-character dialogue cheering on Omni and decrying the Clans. Might sound trivial, but I really enjoyed the depth and engagement!

    It's wild how complicated things can get-and that's just the base game! Shadowlands took it to a whole new level of chaos. But if you thought Anarchy Online was confusing, Asheron's Call was on an entirely different plane. It was challenging overall, and its character system could permanently ruin your build if you didn't allocate skill points carefully. I'll never forget when I was ported to Ayan Baqur and instantly started getting one shot by everything. To this day, I still hate the Shadows in that game! What kept me hooked, though, was the storytelling. Turbine, the developers, weren't afraid to shake things up and make permanent changes to the game world as part of their monthly story updates. One of my most jaw-dropping moments happened a few months after launch during an update called Darkness Ascendant. Rumors started flying around the community that massive Shadow Spires had destroyed significant cities. At first, I thought it was just trolling, but my allegiance patron (basically the guild leader) told me, "No, seriously. Arwic is gone." I had to see it for myself. When I ported to Arwic, it was completely obliterated-just craters where a bustling city used to be. And this wasn't just any city. Arwic was like Asheron's Call's version of Stormwind or Orgrimmar, where everyone went to trade, group up, or hang out. It was so crowded that it caused "portal storms," which randomly teleported people away when too many players gathered in one spot. There was even a running joke that Turbine nuked Arwic to stop the storms! Another standout memory for me was getting my Atlan Axe. That quest was intense, with so many steps and locations. Thankfully, when I did it, the servers were so active that other players had already cleared most of the mobs. Still, getting my axe skill high enough to meet the requirements took forever. I couldn't hit the alchemy level needed to craft the Quality Pyreal Ingot, so I found a kind player who helped me out-for a decent chunk of gold. Then came the trek to Cater Lake Village-yes, a genuine trek across the land, all while being chased by mobs way higher in level and far more deadly than I was ready for. Once I finally made it there, I bought the Finesse Weapons Glyph and used it to transform my ingot into a Superb Infused Ingot. With that in hand, I returned to the Archmage to trade it for my Atlan Axe! What a journey! But that wasn't the end. I wanted to add significantly more damage via lightning to make it epic, so I went after the Major Sparking Stone. That meant diving into the Amperehelion Vault, a dungeon crawling with level 80-100 mobs. I was only level 55 then, which made it extremely tough, but luckily, higher-level players had cleared most of it when I went in. I was so proud when I finally combined the stone with my axe to create the Peerless Sparking Atlan Axe! I just stood there, showing it off to anyone who'd look. I have so many other memories from Asheron's Call, like when I got my hands on a Hoary Mattekar Robe-one of the most powerful items for spellcasters back then because of its insane stats. The robe became even more valuable when Turbine removed it from the game. They eventually brought it back, but it was heavily nerfed by then. I ended up selling mine on eBay for $250 (that was back when there was no such thing as Bind on Pickup or Bind on Equip! I also remember farming Virindi Masks and selling them for $35 on eBay. I made a lot of money from them. What made Asheron's Call special was the dynamic and unpredictable world. It wasn't just a static backdrop-it evolved in ways that made the story feel alive. That kind of immersion is rare, and it's why the game left such a lasting impression on me. The only game that's ever come close for me is Guild Wars 2. Its Living World story, especially during Season One, had permanent changes that reminded me of Asheron's Call-like the massive spire in Kessex Hills. Even now, you can still see the scars of its destruction. Games like these stick with you because they make the world feel real, like your actions-and the story-truly matter.

      I loved Asheron's Call. Played from launch to maybe 2004, so five years on Thistledown. I hated the Shadows and Virindi too. Lots of really fond memories of that game. I loved how you would just stumble across brand new dungeons out in the open - non instanced huge dungeons. I remember once I came across a new dungeon (Idol Spawning Ground, I think) and must have picked up about two dozen "Idol Gems". Eventually I just got rid of them. The next day the monthly patch hit, and bandit hilts were introduced (let you have double strike on swords), and what was the first part of the quest? BRING AN IDOL GEM to NPC so-and-so... I could have really cashed out..

    I was a fan of the books from the age of 10, so when I heard about LotRO I could hardly believe it. The idea of virtually walking around in Tolkien's world was so exciting, and it didn't disappoint. i think it lost out to star wars galaxies back in the day. but the pvp is really good. i think there was a job class called "fixers" who were able to boost your stats so you could wear higher level gear than what you would normally be able to and it was pretty much a requirement if you wanted to play in a party because everyone did it and if you couldn't keep up gear wise you were lacking behind alot so playing in orgs and with people that aid you was pretty much a requirement. it created a sense of community that doesn't exist nowadays. people in general were very generous and helpful though

    Stunningly boring. Just spent the last three days giving this game a serious chance. Even bought VIP for one month. But the game is just clunky in every way. Too old school and difficult for new players to get into. The 30 years old maps look awful. Getting around, or trying to use the stables/quick transportation is hard when the names don't correspond to anything on the map. Trying to get into professions is a mess. Chose some forestry and woodworking I thought but had no idea how to find wood for chopping or whatever. Having to google and watch youtube videos for every single little aspect of the game is just not fun. Tedious and boring. Tried to get my 16 year old kid into the game, she gave up after just 30 min. She couldn't understand the quests and how to navigate the zones. Text and font is too small for people who have bad eyesight. Even the font enlarge only works on some parts of the game, so you get a weird mix of large small and tiny fonts. And so on and so on... The game is just too old, not user friendly, not beginner friendly at all.

    I just wish they would update the graphics. I feel like if they did than it would allow LOTRO to rival WoW and FFXIV much more.

      It may cause you to want to learn more! The experience is enriched if you're familiar but if isn't a prerequisite. 🥰

      It has its own zone like ESO/GW2 for PvP (called PvMP). 🥰

    I searched this up hoping JSH did a video on this, but this certainly hit the spot. This game was HUGE for me for jr high until I finished high school. I started somewhere in 2006 or 2007, I believe. My computer started shitting the bed and I couldn't raid as much on WoW and my cousin showed me this game. He was married in the game and she was his online 'girlfriend'. Lol I cant remember what the city was called (the dirt looking one near the apes/snakes?) but they used go have their character models sitting close together and shit whenever they were online. lmao The first time I got a super on the trojan while killing pheasants was such a jawdropping moment for me. I forget our first server but eventually I moved to Turqoise and swapped to Ninja when that came out. I took that class all the way through 1st and 2nd rebirth quests and got the "Top Ninja" banner several times when the class PK tournaments would come up. Doing the 2nd rb quest was such a HUGE accomplishment for me, I still remember the night I did it and had my whole guild in an msn groupchat cheering me on. Used to love hanging out in front of the bird island city gate and watching lowbies pvp each other when they werent getting plvld, hearing the sount of a met dropping and the cool prismatic effect it would have. The mentor system was so cool too and I might've missed that part of the video because I'm typing this but I remember getting my buddy as a mentor while releveling from 1st RB, his name was Danzo. He was a really great guy from Syria. I remember one of the last times we spoke he said he was gonna take a break from playing to join the army, as he just had twin daughters and needed more money to provide for them... unfortunately the syrian civil war started a few months later. I still think about him and hope he's doing well. Danzo, if you see this, I miss you! And cyanosis, if you see this, you're still KoS. 😆
