January Explorations 02: Yamaha Reface YC with Wingie Resonator, Roland S1 Synth and effects
Second January exploration.
Again featuring the Yamaha Reface YC organ with the Wingie resonator.
Joining the fun is the Roland S1 Tweak Synth which has its audio out going direct into the Yamaha YC which then in turn goes into the Wingie.
The Roland S1 midi out is going into the YC and the YC midi out goes into the Wingie so the Wingie resonator follows the pitch.
They all go into the HX One pedal which is running the Euclidean Delay patch
They also go into the PolyMoon delay.
Finally there is the Specular Tempus reverb which is coating everything in the Anti-Shimmer algorithm.
The Roland S1 has its own delay effect that is also adding to the soup.
I promised to keep these videos under 5 mins so...

January Explorations 01: with Yamaha Reface YC, Wingie, HX One, PolyMoon Delay and Specular Tempus

I’m back! Apologies for the extended radio silence but I have been busy making a film which took up every last ounce of free time I had. It is now done so normal synth based service can resume. Unfortunately, the film was for a corporate client and intended for internal use only so I am unable to share it here. It is good though, IMHO. So here then is the first of, what I intend to be, many sho...
Ambient Occlusion featuring Roland S1 Aira Tweak Synth and Line 6 HX One pedal
Просмотров 128Месяц назад
This is a fun little play with the Roland S-1 Tweak Synth. The audio out is going direct into the Blackbox sampler and the output from that is being sent to a HX One pedal and Specular Tempus reverb (as sends from the mixer). The S1 is the only sound source. The HX One is set to its “Adriatic Delay” with the BBD size reduced and the noise increased for some lo-fi artefacts on the repeats. It’s ...
Clowns on the Rampage feat. Befaco Oneiroi, Arturia MicroFreak, MiniFreak and Moog Matriarch

This is another video that is linked to my recent release “High Altitude Magpies”. When making instrumental music, it can be hard to give the tracks titles unless you have something specific in mind when creating it. I have a little book that, when I think of an interesting name, word or phrase, I write it down as a possible song title. I have had “Clowns on the Rampage” as a title in my book f...

This is an extension of the patch featured in the previous video. I thought it might be a bit different to record something in 6/8 for a change. I don’t hear much modular/Eurorack stuff in 6/8 so here’s some to mix it up. This time the patch includes some additional friends in the Eurorack case. Principally featuring the QD Percussion module but with clocks and triggers being fed from Pam’s New...
Roland S1 Aira Tweak Synth Ambient Interlude with Ovum and Wingie
Просмотров 1182 месяца назад
This is a little experiment in limiting myself to just a couple of sound sources. Technically, there’s three here but I do consider the Ovum and Wingie as one unit because they work so well together. I created a little pattern on the Roland S1’s sequencer. I then set up some complimentary notes on the Ovum. This is then fed direct into the Wingie which is set to its arpeggiator mode, which you ...

This was recorded a few weeks ago but I didn't publish it at the time. It's part of my "High Altitude Magpies" EP which is available to stream or purchase on your favourite platforms. Obviously I'd prefer it if you bought it directly from me on seanelliotmusic.bandcamp.com but then that's entirely up to you. Note that the released track has a 'choose your own ending' element. Update This track is now available to purchase on my Bandcamp page. It is entitled “High Altitude Magpies”. The release also includes two other tracks from unpublished videos; one of which you can choose your own ending: with or without drums! This is a little jam I came up with on the Moog Sound Studio semi modular crew - Mother 32, Subharmonicon and DFAM. See below for detailed patching ins/o...
Ambient Drone Moods with Befaco Oneiroi, Arturia MicroFreak and MiniFreak and Moog Matriarch

Clive showed up for this one to give his usual thoughtful feedback on the process. He hasn't been over for a while so he has quite a bit to say. He seems to be upset with the fact that there is some other guy sat there staring at him. This piece features the Befaco Oneiroi module with 2x Arturia MicroFreaks and a MiniFreak. Moog Matriarch provides the bass and a Roland TR6S and QD Percussion mo...

This is a little jam with the Befaco Oneiroi and the Ovum & Wingie combo which goes into the input of the Oneiroi. There is also the Matriarch on bass and the MiniFreak with a twinkly pad thing. Percussion is from the QD eurorack module and Roland TR6S. The QD is being manipulated by cv fed from Lapsus Os which is mixing up the pattern being fed from the Dots trigger sequencer. Effects are from...
Freaks With Feedback - Arturia MiniFreak, MicroFreak, Befaco Oneiroi dawless jam

This is a dawless jam mostly featuring the "Super Freak" shelf - 2x Arturia MicroFreaks and a MiniFreak. They are providing the main synth parts - the two MicroFreaks are panned left and right and are going through a Donner Tape Delay pedal with separate delay times for the left and right and both with 100% feedback. The feedback on the pedal doesn't fully self oscillate so you can leave it at ...
Befaco Oneiroi Jam with Friends

This is a little jam following on from the previous video. It uses the same basic sequence on the 2 MicroFreaks but this time there is also a looped version of it running on the Blackbox sampler. The Ovum and Wingie go direct into the Oneiroi which is looped as well. There is a note sequence coming from the Oxi One that is triggering the Oneiroi’s sine and supersaw waves. The Matriarch has a si...
Befaco Oneiroi Demo no external effects

This is a little experiment with the Befaco Oneiroi to keep all the sound sources and effects to the Oneiroi itself. This meant not using my trusty Meris PolyMoon delay and Specular Reverb , which was difficult! Any reverb or delay you hear is coming directly from the Oneiroi. I have used the Ovum and Wingie drone synths (see previous videos exploring those) as a direct input to the Oneiroi, bu...
Ambient Washes with Befaco Oneiroi & Friends

Another exploration with the excellent Befaco Oneiroi module. This also features the Super Freak collective - 2x MicroFreaks and a MiniFreak - as well as the Empress Zoia. Ovum and Wingie also get a look in. The first part you hear is from the Zoia running a patch that’s either one of the presets or I downloaded it, I can’t remember where it came from. It runs a little repeating note sequence. ...
Befaco Oneiroi First Patch* with Ornament and Crime
Просмотров 5404 месяца назад
*First proper patch that works as expected. Technically, this would be the third or fourth patch. The Oneiroi was doing some very odd things straight out of the box and it took a bit of troubleshooting to get it back to how it should be. Firstly, I noticed the delay was not a distinct 2-tap echo as I was expecting (from other demos I had watched) but more a diffuse blurry echo. It was good, jus...

Woow beautiful !! The Polymoon is one of my favorite pedal ! One of the most beautiful delay ever made, with the Black Hole Symmetry, other moduled delay inspired by Meris !!
Very cool 😎
Really nice, I am looking into the oxi one to do the same type of thing with my Matriarch and hopefully some poly sequencing of my other synths. Thanks for sharing ✌️
Thank you! Much appreciated. If you’re looking to do true 4 voice polyphony with the Matriarch it does get very ‘patchy’ very quickly. As I think I mentioned in the description, you will need an additional 2 envelopes and VCAs plus possibly another 2 filters with envelopes if you want to keep the oscillators separate to one another. It’s a fun exploration to play around with but not hugely practical to use as a true 4 voice polyphonic Matriarch, if that’s what you’re after. Good luck on your adventure, traveller!
Ooh this is fantastic.
Is Oxi sequencing everything?
Not on this occasion no. It’s acting as main clock though keeping everything synced. I can’t remember the specifics as I recorded it a while ago but I think the Oxi was sequencing one of the parts. Possibly sending notes to the Oneiroi. The MicroFreaks were using their own sequencer I think.
This is beautiful. Are you familiar with “does spring hide its joy?” By Kali Malone?
Hi there! I’m not familiar, no. I will check it out. Thanks for commenting. Much appreciated!
@@seanelliotmusic Totes. I think you might like it. Very similar approach of minimalist drone with a magnified focus on subtle shifts in texture and tone.
Great 👍
Thank you! Greatly appreciated. Thanks for commenting.
wish it has a voice over. would rather just hear it than watch what you're doing while tryign to read it at the same time. Wish youtube has a features to read on screen text to us !
Fair comment. Maybe in the future I might do voiceovers for the tutorial type vids but I really don’t have a great voiceover-voice so I’d probably use one of the AI ones. In the meanwhile, as a fun little activity, why not record yourself reading the text (into phone voice memo, for example) and then play it back as you watch the video!
beautiful 🙏 may i ask where you got the awesome grandfather clock?
Hi there! Yes you may. It is a “Klydoclock” and it has a whole bunch of different animated clock faces with a new one added every day. I got mine as part of their kickstarter campaign but they’re available to buy direct from klydoclock.com. Thanks for commenting. Much appreciated!
Nice work ! Where can i find the knobs for ovum ?
Hi there. I got the knobs from the link below, there’s a bunch of colours to choose from. They fit quite easily over the top of the existing knobs and there is a little Allen screw to secure them. thepihut.com/products/orange-micro-potentiometer-knob-4-pack Thanks for commenting. Much appreciated!
I have the Ovum as well, phenomenally underrated device. Such beautiful tones come out of it, and it goes DEEP. I see that you have orange knobs on yours, a nice adjustment to get away from those tiny little black ones. Where did you find those? Andy specific size I should look for to ensure a good fit?
I do love the Ovum. Yes the orange knobs I added do make it a bit easier but it is still a bit fiddly to dial in the pitch you want. I got the knobs from here: thepihut.com/products/orange-micro-potentiometer-knob-4-pack They fit snugly over the top of the originals and have a little screw to secure them.
Love this. That mellow bass dancing around is really sweet. Is this all played live?
Yes. All played live direct to stereo, no multitrack. All clocks are fed via Pam’s New Workout. It’s partially improvised in that I have a rough idea of what various settings will sound like from a basic outline of a plan, but I mostly just press record and then noodle around!
Great!!
Thank you! Much appreciated!
Love the layers of sound. The explanation really helps understand the structure 👍🏼
Thank you. Much appreciated. The “Adriatic Delay” and reverb is doing quite a lot of the heavy lifting here.
Sounds sweet and ethereal. Nice work on the panning too.
Thank you! The panning is almost entirely natural in that the two MicroFreaks go into the left + right input on the Zoom MS-CDR70 which creates the stereo-fied version via the effects. This means that one MicroFreak is mostly on the left and the other one mostly on the right, but the effects bring each signal across to the other side. The MiniFreak and Oneiroi just have their own stereo signal recorded. I record direct to stereo. Thanks for commenting. Much appreciated!
This sounds so huge. Glorious 👍🏼
Thank you! Much appreciated!
Just stumbled on your channel looking for Ovum related stuff....i just got one. Quite a setup you have there, some great sounds and grooves. Im curious where you got the orange knobs for the Ovum?....i take it they slip over the original ones?
Hi there! As you can probably tell from my videos I love the Ovum! It’s been in pretty much every video since I got it. I have it permanently plumbed into the Wingie resonator - that is a great combo I highly recommend. The knobs do fit over the top of the originals and they have a little screw to secure them. I got them from thepihut.com. There’s loads of different colours. Not sure if it allows links in comments but if it does, this link will take you to the orange ones I bought: thepihut.com/products/orange-micro-potentiometer-knob-4-pack Thanks for commenting. Much appreciated!
@@seanelliotmusic cheers! I find those tiny knobs on the Ovum to be a bit fiddly, so getting these as an add on would make that easier.
They do make tuning easier but because of the wide pitch range of the Ovum it can still be a bit fiddly to get it to the pitch you want.
This is totally excellent, thank you so much, love it!! :)
That’s very kind of you! Glad you like it. I plan on releasing it as a track to stream/purchase very soon so be sure to check my Bandcamp page within next few days! Thanks for commenting. Much appreciated!

Love the amount of movement you create in these. Lots of depth.
That’s very kind. Thank you. Much appreciated!
Oooh nice, likeeee, subb’d
Thank you! That is greatly appreciated!
Man, this melody hits right. Also love the idea with 2 microfreaks. Looks and sounds original!
Thank you! Much appreciated. I can highly recommend 2x MicroFreaks going into a stereo pedal, like the Zoom MS70 I use here. It is quite a bit different to just having the bigger MiniFreak, for example. 2 independent but synced sequencers is a hugely useful tool! Thanks for commenting
Do you have any other processing on this signal or sound? EQ, reverb, etc...?
Hi! It was a while ago but as far as I can remember I had the Matriarch going into it via a stereo send from the mixer which is how I normally have my pedals set up. No other effects applied. Dry Matriarch into PolyMoon. No EQ - you’re listening to a direct to stereo recording which is how I normally record stuff. Hope that helps. Thanks for commenting!

Haha! Yes it is. Well spotted. He’s the Welsh Elvis! It was a Christmas gift from my brother to remind me that I really liked Shakin Stevens when I was younger.

Yes I’ve definitely used that a lot previously. I do like the extra sauce the Voices algorithm adds though. Thanks for commenting - much appreciated!

Nice
Thank you. Much appreciated!
Excellent. Thanks for the detailed description too 👍🏼 I’m becoming fascinated with drones. Some can be so complex. Been droning a lot lately lol
Thank you! Much appreciated. Yes there is something very appealing about the Ovum’s basic approach. It definitely comes alive with effects.
I've been looking at these two, but this has definitely convinced me I need them. Thank you for sharing 😊
They are a great combination. I’ve used them pretty much constantly since getting them. Glad I could help! Thanks for commenting.
Oh my I could listen for hours to this drone and probably will. Love the reversed sounds. Great work!
Glad you enjoyed it. Thank you! Thanks for commenting, much appreciated.
Excellent. I’ve managed to start developing some slower, more atmospheric sounds. Got a Soma ROAT and the Ovum through an NTS-1, it’s very addictive.
Nice setup. I’ve looked at the ROAT - I’m tempted! I am holding out for the forthcoming Stylophone Drone synth though - that looks very nice and is hopefully released soon. Thanks for the kind words and for commenting, much appreciated.
@@seanelliotmusic i wasn’t sold on the ROAT initially as most online content is focused on the mad bit crushed insanity it produces. I found some vids showing the more drone and ambient focussed stuff. If you don’t start randomising everything it’s easy to tame and can sound amazing. Yeah I’ve got my name down for the Stylophone drone too 😄
Huh! That’s interesting because I thought the ROAT could only really do wild stuff like you mentioned. I’ll have another look then…
@@seanelliotmusic at its very basic it’s an Ovum with 4 voices that can have multiple wave and LFO shapes as well as individual rates which makes for some elaborate droning 👍🏼
@Lo-Fi-Si thanks. Will look into it!
These are beautiful. Thanks for sharing the set up details too.
No worries. Glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for commenting!
Really nice! I love the Ovum. The design and interface is excellent. Thanks for sharing.
I love it too. Considering it’s one of the cheaper things I’ve purchased I’m getting a lot of mileage out of it! Thanks for commenting!
Very cool jam!
Thank you! Much appreciated!
So calm and Beauty composition.
Thank you! Much appreciated.
What mixer is that?
If you’re referring to the white wooden box with 5 faders, that’s not a mixer. It’s the Ovum drone synth by CrowsElectroMusic. It has 5 oscillators that you can pitch individually and bring in/out with the faders. If you mean the mixer in the eurorack, it’s 2x ALM Tangle Quartets. Thanks for commenting!
Lovely. This is what I have been trying to do for weeks. But every time I end up adding basslines and leads and end up with a dance track. Find it really hard to keep things minimal and stripped back.
Ha! I have the opposite problem. My stuff rarely has a lead or melody in it so it can be a bit ‘aimless’! Glad you like it. Thanks for commenting - much appreciated.
@@seanelliotmusic I’ve purchased a delay/reverb pedal for the Microfreak to see if it will slow me down lol
Yes the MicroFreak leaps into a different beast with delay/reverb on it. Definitely needs it, a bit too raw otherwise.
Thanks for the extensive breakdown of your equipment. Love you're using the Wingie... so affordable and yet such a beast! I Recently purchased from my last trip down to LA and Perfect Circuit. Def interested in seeing how others use it.
The Wingie is excellent fun. Only recently discovered the arpeggio feature on some of the modes. Still exploring it but it works so well with the Ovum - another low cost fun machine! I’m finding it difficult to stop using it in this setup! Tip: I’ve taken a photo of the instructions on the bottom so its easier to refer to what the different modes do. Thanks for commenting - much appreciated!
Great
Thank you! Much appreciated!
All this gear and zero musical talent. If its a hobby just for fun. Enjoy. But, do you know it sounds terrible? Its a great rig. Ive got something very close. Difference is, i write music with them.
You forgot to add “imho”. Did you know that if you don’t like something you can just move on and find something else you do like. There’s plenty of room for everyone. Thanks for commenting though, I’ll be sure to check your stuff out to see what I’m doing wrong.
Maggot Brain ?
Hi! Can’t tell if you’re asking because you know it’s Maggot Brain or if you’re asking because you don’t know what Maggot Brain is from my description. If it’s the latter, it’s a track by the band Funkadelic with a pretty epic guitar solo. Worth checking out if you’ve never heard it. That’s what this basic arpeggio pattern is based on. Thanks for commenting!
@@seanelliotmusic The chord changes made me think of that song. I was wondering if you were in that MB state of mind. Its the first song I play when checking out a new delay pedal.
You are exactly correct. It is a copy of the Maggot Brain arpeggio. I thought I had already mentioned that in the description but I just double checked and I haven’t. Therefore, you win one Sean Elliot Music Fun Token for spotting the link. Well done! Thanks for commenting!
🎉👍
