40 years old here in Colorado. I had a bike for 2 years in college and looking to maybe get back into riding. This looks like an excellent all-around machine.
Great detail in your discussion, i put the FuelX Lite into my Svartpilen 401 when I upgraded the air with K&N +Cover filter, resonator bypass mid pipe and Werkes exhaust straight after the first service and unlock of the system, it’s essential for any individual changes to exhaust or air intake system, best investment ever. I mix up my elevation regularly (5-4000’) and to allow the Lite version to recalibrate I simply allow about 5 mins of switched on ready to ride for the Lite to alter its settings and off I go, continual throttle response in all places🙌🏾
2:06 there's actually a naked bike from TVS with same g310 R engine that comes with host of useful features one among them is Cruise control which they call cornering cruise control.
I'm looking for my first rider and the KTM looks the part, nice video look forward to the next one.
To arrogant white North Americans who never go off road, it is beginners bike. To Indians, central Americans, and others who actually use their motorbikes in all conditions, it is a big bike.
Is it better than a CB500 for a first bike?
@@benevolentprime3214 really just depends on the surface you intend to ride on, cb500 great for pavement, 390 adventure great for off and on road surface, where do you intend to go?
That's not a sport but base ryker.
The KLR is an antiquated piece of crap.. A terrible bike compared with what's out there. The worst motorcycle I have owned in 50 years of bike ownership..
Antiquated yes , are there better modern bikes out there Definitely but the KLR speaks to certain people. It’s budget friendly, there’s enough parts to repair it just about anywhere on the planet and properly maintained will run forever. I owned one for many years and it had its issues but by in large it was an anvil 👍 sorry your experience with it was so bad . Hopefully you found a better fit 🤗
If you come to western Colorado, we can take the 390's on a handful of amazing day trips. Mine is a '21 with lots of fun upgrades.
Will keep it in mind, would be thrilled with some mellow routes 👍👍 just got home and even my hair hurts 😁😹😹😂
Btw have you done any suspension work?
@@thebelligerentmechanic8916 Not yet, but suspension upgrades are needed. Your thoughts? Is it possible for you to contact me directly? I'd rather not post my email here.
👍 merci Ne faut il pas vérifier le niveau une fois que l'huile est chaude ?
Was a great ride. Pretty challenging technical ride on two wheels. Two side flops (accidents) and one injury. Rain, mud and slick ass rocks.
What a memory making ride thrilled that we can still do although we’re suffering today 😅😅😊
video sideways gives me a sore neck.

@@gypsyminstrels8744 that’s a possibility 🤷♂️😂
Looks great there, hope the cfmoto can keep up ;)
I got a ryker 600 and get 32-35 mpg. Its a 2021 with 8k plus miles its been a fun ride.
That tool roll looks great need to get one stead of the ol plastic kit
Change the transmission fluid more often.
The Duke doesn't use transmission fluid.
You know it
The transmission has always been solid 10k+ towing miles, the rear brakes on the other hand have required premature replacement 🤷♂️
if you are not taking tools with you then youre either incompetent at repairs or inexperienced with break downs. i work on an airboat and my boss wont let me leave the jetty without 3 tool boxes. may seem overkill but anything can go wrong out there.
When I hiked the blue ridge mountains I'd always have a 10mm on my hip, bear spray, knife and a micro draco in my backpack.....
We’re riding the Colorado Rockies this week 👍 on the bear spray
Cheers 🎉@@thebelligerentmechanic8916
Nothing wrong with being prepared.
I just bought this bike, and was also surprised to find that in KTM-ese "tubeless" = "tube." I'm not going to be doing hard off-road rides, and probably a lot more road travel. So shall I: 1. Keep them, knowing if there's ever a flat I have to dismount the wheel, pry off the tire, then patch or replace the tube and reassemble? Yet how likely is that -- Not. I rode an '82 Suzuki for 15 years on alloy rims through two sets of tires/tubes and never had a flat. The flexibility of spoke wheels may further reduce that risk, especially with heavier tubes. Rare problem though complicated if it occurs. 2. Get a set of alloy rims? (See above "Suzuki" for reassuring experience.) Puncture repair as easy as plugging the tire. Unless it bends/breaks the rim, more likely than for the spoke rims. Rare event, simpler fix, though potentially more damaging. Maybe it's a wash, and I should just ride with what I have. A severe, least likely hit will ruin either set. Any thoughts?
I wouldn’t lose sleep over it. I’ve ridden tons of tube tired bikes with very few issues. It is nice to be able to simply “plug” a tire but for me tubes are not a dealbreaker 👍 enjoy your bike 🤗
Prepared! I carry almost an identical set of tools (other than the tyre levers). In addition I carry a small pack of wet wipes and a couple of fuses. I've repaired 3 punctures with the sticky worms, had it down to a fine art at one point. The 390 needs all the 'abnormal' size spanners for some reason, I mean, I barely used a 13mm open ended spanner before getting the 390. Hope you don't need any of them, enjoy the trip.
Note to self “ add the wet wipes “ excellent addition 🙏👍
The way you described the original running at idle and cruise is identical to the latest Triumph 400s by the same manufacturer. Too lean I think. Couple more days till the FuelX arrives.
The world market makes it very difficult for engine manufactures to meet all the emission requirements so they adopt the most strict and let the end user and aftermarket sort it out, really is quite silly but at least we have a work around. Your bike will run well with a good re map.👍
@@thebelligerentmechanic8916 Weird it needs an external box. Why can't the manufacturers make the ECU map on bikes accessible to after-market editing?
Because of the small displacement, the 390 is very affected by wind and elevation changes and with a throttle lock or rocker, you are always fiddling with them. If I was doing a lot more long distance riding, I wouldn't choose the 390 ADV, but at times when I do the odd 350-400 mile ride with the little 390 ADV, an electronic cruise control is a game changer. We are lucky that the 390 has throttle by wire, and for $300, the Veridan electronic cruise control was a no brainer. I would need to disagree with your premise that the OEM foot pegs are no issue off road, even with stiff motocross boots, the angle of the pegs is a real irritant, with a 0 degree peg, it transforms the ergos. The OEM bash plate is an absolute joke, and needs replacement if you plan any off road, or even forestry trail riding at all if you value your engine case. I am surprised that others have mentioned that they were able to get up to 15,000 miles on the OEM chain. Mine was toast after 6,000 miles, and required adjustment every 200 miles or so, and I should have actually replaced it earlier. I replaced it with DID VX3 and a 15-47 tooth combo, coming from the 14-45 tooth, and I now I only adjust it between oil changes. From my experience the 14-45 tooth combo was a bit buzzy on the road, and the 15-47 tooth combo has been a good compromise. The OEM TKC70's are great road tires, but totally useless in mud or sand, I have had good results with the Bridgestone Battleax Adventures, much better off road, and livable on road. I do like the bike overall, it's a great value, and there are enough aftermarket products out there to easily customize it to your own personal style of riding. Thanks for sharing!
No , seriously , clean your bike .

Speaking as the viewer who asked, thanks again TBG! This is far more clear and straightforward than the other video I found about this.
You are quickly becoming my favorite Moto RUclipsr, thanks
Thanks so much for the kind words 🙏🙏
Great review for me as I'm thinking about getting the Fuel X, thank you! Why did you choose the Pro vs Lite version, and was it worth the higher price to you since the Lite is supposed to automatically adjust to conditions?
I usually buy controllers that i can adjust weather i do it with a laptop or a switch. I've heard good things about the lite but I'm old and suspicious of a single map being optimum for all scenarios :)🤣😂🤣
I'd like to see how to adjust the height of the shift and rear brake pedals.
I'll make a quick video about how to do that for you, probably next weekend " gotta work all week :)
@@thebelligerentmechanic8916 That's very nice of you! I did since find these demonstrated on other RUclips videos, so do it if it makes sense for your own series' completeness. Thanks.
@@RYwoodview glad you found info to adjust your levers . Ride safe friend
FYI just posted a video for you about adjusting your brake and shift levers, sorry it took so long I've been working constantly .😓
@@thebelligerentmechanic8916 Well, thank you TBG!
My 390 Adventure (stock sprockets) starts vibrating at 5,000 rpm (55 mph). Therefore, I find it most comfortable to cruise just below that, say 53 mph. fyi: neoprene rubber sheets are far more effective than ANY foam for vibration absorption; they're available on Amazon in varying thicknesses. For comfort, I run running weight (bike + me in space suit + baggage) over maximum tire weights times max weight psi = 21 psi (for my weight).
I'm 66 years old I have a Goldwing , KTM 1190 , KLR , and I ride my KTM 390 most because its the same horsepower as the KLR almost 100 pounds lighter, with more amenities. like 6th gear, tack & gear indicator.
Yep i sold my KLR and bought the 390 for those exact reasons. Safe riding friend.
No service station around seems like a con..
My dealership is about 25 minutes from my home.
I bought and been using fuel x i did not felt it worth. I think without fuelx lite bike was more better .i think they are making us fool .in the name of fuelx😂
I rode mine for 3k miles before installing mine. The fuel X programmer definitely makes a huge difference!!!!! In performance and economy.
Happy with my 21/600 which gets 38mpg. Started out at 34mpg
Hell yea! You showed those teenagers!
Yes, would do it. Miss it on my MX5.
Thanks for video. Is that KTM parts house in Lexington, Ky.? I bought one of these motorcycles in Feb. I've removed grab handles and installed Moose racing tailrack, 15mm thick plastic, so far I like it. Barkbusters handgurds. I bought both of those from Revzilla. And I attached a larger kickstand pad, bought that from Amazon.
And, 1st service they did talk me into quickshifter. I like that, happy i got it.
I'm not sure? I think they were located in California. I still have the stock handguards but they are flimsy so i see some bark busters in my future , i may do that kickstand pad , i did have to stop in soft clay and it sunk pretty quick. Ride safe friend
@@thebelligerentmechanic8916 Thank you, be safe!!! I got the VPS Barkbusters. They come with extra plastic to add to handguard for more wind protection. The aluminum bars come with good mounting hardware.
@@pars5027 gotta love quick shifting :)
@@thebelligerentmechanic8916 I found it, KTM Twins Escondido, CA
When I rode my 1950s sidecar outfit I wore Czech fell boots, very strong sole. I managed to lift the car off the ground and lock the steering in a straight line. The bike was stopped with my foot impacted betewwn the bike and kerb. Absolutely fine. Never realised at the time it could have been so different. Great detailed posts, sold me on the bike.
That hack sounds like a cool ride, I've never ridden one but I'd like to :) I do have more robust boots for my offroad rides " old lessons learned :) the little KTM has been a lot of fun so far , lightweight, good power relatively simple. Safe riding friend
I like your work ethic. Get it done right, but relax and enjoy life.
Working on my bikes is therapeutic for me, a much needed break from my daily grind 🤗 ride safe 👍
Really great review! Straight to the point and with down to earth points for us "mortals". I really appreciate the respect given to those of us "afraid to make a bad investment" part. It really hit home. Congrats! 💯💯
I fitted the SWmotech flat pegs, which can be adjusted up down forward and back. The flatter pegs make a huge difference. I also fitted a nicecnc rear brake pedal, which folds up if you drop the bike. I fitted mine underneath rather than on top, as I prefer a low pedal when standing. I've put the ktm bashplate through some hard times, and it copes a treat, with some loud ding noises letting you know its doing it's job.
those motech pegs sound great , i may have to try some if these don't work out " it would be nice to lower them a little. Glad to hear the KTM plate is holding up well . I may have to get that brake pedal 🤗 safe riding friend :)
@@thebelligerentmechanic8916 I got mine off of amazon, it's a well made bit of kit. Also, another quality bit I put on mine is the venhill featherlight clutch cable. Can order in varying lengths/colours (colors) , and it makes for 1 finger clutch work. Brilliant (I always thought a cable was just a cable, but this is super cool) Riding safe is what got us to the ages we are ;) Enjoy every mile .
My bike looks like that most of the time here in Scotland :) Nice save by the sounds of it.
Snowmobile
lol...scary place ?
The fires may be on purpose...evil .
I tried those pegs and used them without changing the levers and it was not awesome. I'll have to adjust mine when I've got time. I went back to the stock ones in the meantime.
I know what you mean, they will take some getting used to. sounds like those SW Motech pegs might be the trick, adjustable front to rear and up and down . I have adjusted my levers ,its ok but i do have to take my right foot off the peg to shift down. constant compromises .
TREX Racing engine guards and skid plate is where it’s at
I like theirs too but I'm still leaning more towards the SW-Motech one.
That's a good bag on the back, I have it, paid like 30 bucks..a steal .
😂😂
Thats a scary incident, hope there is no dirt particle entering into the air chamber!
