Fishing an Algae Bloom!
Last week when the MLF Team series went to Lake Erie, many of the teams had to contend with water that had that bright green hue to it. The algae bloom was in full force. What do you do when faced with an algae bloom? We’ll talk about that in today’s episode.

Nose Hook or Thread Your Drop Shot Baits?

Do you nose hook or thread your drop shot baits. There are those that believe the baits action is improved if you rig it one way, while others say the hook up percentage is improved if you rig it the other way. In today’s “Underwater Wednesday” we go into the pool to see the effect of each and the results may surprise you!

    Thank you for this video cause just recently I was confronted with this situation on a lake that normally has 5-6’ clarity and we really struggled getting bite especially docks and lay downs. We caught maybe 20 bass compared to 30-40 normally and tried darker baits and off shore fishing. Does the algae effect the bass being able to breathe like we’re effected by pollen?

    • @markfisheroutdoors
      @markfisheroutdoors День назад

      I’ve not heard or seen any evidence of that. What I do know is that there are multitudes of variables that affect bass behavior. We as humans tend to identify only those we can see most predominantly. We may blame a very visible algae bloom for a tough bite when the real reason may be something more obscure. I appreciate you tuning into the channel and sharing your experience! Have a great weekend.

    Is it possible for a farm pond to be turning over now beginning of September? I fish one about 5 acres we went last Thursday and these bubbles were coming up from the bottom all over the pond water just looked different? This is in Ky. and its been record highs.

    • @markfisheroutdoors
      @markfisheroutdoors 5 дней назад

      @@Rightiswrong-qv5ul if you haven’t experienced cooling air temperatures then it’s highly unlikely that what you’re seeing is turn over. You didn’t mention how deep the pond is but remember, the body of water needs to have enough depth to create a discrepancy between the upper and lower water temperatures. I will say however, that one telltale sign of a lake that is turning over is that it will get almost cloudy with debris/silt and may even give off a stale type odor.

    I generally nose hook mine (just in front of the eyes side to side) using an appropriate size hook for the different size baits or target fish. The bait usually just slides up the line. As it gets worn out I just clip a little off. I’ve caught fish in one cut back past the eyes. I will add weight as needed. Sometimes just a split shot above it and sometimes drop shot style. I’ve caught multiple fish (spotted & striped bass) on one lure. I recently bought some of these CoreTackle weighted hooks for river fishing. Can’t wait to try it.

    I don't get too hung up on trailers. If the bait is in the correct spot, I doubt the fish cares what's on the bladed jig. Musky & pike guys use a straight-tailed Slug-Go threaded on 90 degrees to the slits. It wiggles side to side when installed that way. I think the shorter intro is a good compromise.
