This Channel is mainly about hockey whether it be the NHL, Olympics or even Table top Hockey though other sports will be concluded.
OPC Hockey cards with Jim "Have another doughnut" Schoenfeld
Went over to Heroes to buy some 1974 OPC Hockey cards. One of the more interesting cards belong to Jim Schoenfeld who also released 2 albums in the1970's. Shoenfield is best known for his comments to referee Don Koharski during a playoff game in 1988.

Belmont Canada vs Hvidovre Denmark 1986
The end of the CH came when they left the forum (I forgot the year). But the grand final started in early 1980. A team from a video game is better than today's CH. ***** What a nightmare that horrible Carey Price was. Because of him I can't even watch hockey today. I have to admit that they are all like Price, garden gnomes on their knees for 60 minutes.
They still were a formidable team in 1979-80 even with all the players missing from the team before even without Scotty Bowman
I agree they were still a formadable team in the early 80's but didn't have great goaltending or a coach to crack the whip on them.
.. ah ah ... Bowman was a cheap club doorman. He was just good at opening and closing the little door to the ice for his players.
@@catholiccowboy8545 Must be a Nordiques fan. Get off the cross we need the wood.
@@hockeynightinbelmont9176 Do you also want the little diaper that the man on his plywood cross wore? Used and smelly but still useful.
If Schony expected to partake in that BBQ in heaven I hope he sought forgiveness for the sin of that song. Lol.
That song brought tears to my eyes laughing. But hey it was the 70's
Schoenfeld's song is hilarious. I know Lafleur did a disco album and the NYR with Esposito did one as well in the 70's. I remember the Have a Donut scenario. I was rooting for the Devils as Boston had beat out my Habs.
I know right. I cracked up right away. He does a lot of covers and John Valdy help with one of them. Something not to be taken seriously.
Mike is a great guy! He has been doing this for years. He is one of not the largest seller in eastern Canada. If you're looking to complete your set he got your cards. Thanks for the video.
I'm back in Halifax this week and plan to stop there again. I'm hoping that he has cards from the WHA sets.
Patrick Roy trade was the worst I could think of. Montreal should have gotten a 1st round pick in "96 and a 2nd rnd in '97.
I agree, Montreal gave up too much for too little. Kovalenko was never given a chance in Montreal and was traded to Edmonto for Scott thornton (bad trade), Jocelyn Thibault had some moments but only lasted 3 seasons and Ruchinsky had 4 decent seasons in Montreal before being traded away for nothing. Habs gave up Mike Keane too which baffled me at the time. Habs should have gotten a High Draft pick too.
I’ve always thought these 71/72’s were not only the best hockey set but maybe one of the most attractive card sets. Looks like a nice run of Seals cards. As always I appreciate the history lesson too.
I went for the Seal cards first simply because they haven't existed in almost 50 years and I do love the colour scheme. The owner was the same guy who owned the Oakland "A''s. This set is cool but no action cards. I have a soft spot for the defunct teams of the 70's.
dyk Charlie O owned the Memphis Tams of the ABA as well? He made them wear the same colors as the A’s but at least he couldn’t make them wear white skates like the Seals.
Turnbull was a good defencemen and paired well with Salming.
They did. Toronto should never have traded him away.
Anytime you can score an Espo? It’s a good day.
It's not Pollack my friend..can't take you seriously lol..
You got me. Irony is I have a friend with the last name Pollock.
Nice cards,
Your video on the phone. Habs v Sabres on the tube. Good day. As always I love the history lesson that comes with your videos.
Great pick ups
Charlie O Finley also owned the ABA’s Memphis franchise. He changed the name to Tams and traded the team colors to A’s colors.
That has to be ome of the worst names I have heard. I had to look it up. acronym for Tennessee - Arkansas - Mississippi, and the logo was a tam o'shanter-style hat in white, green and gold.
@@hockeynightinbelmont9176 you nailed it.
I love old vintage mint cards.
I miss opening up the packs and chewing some godawful gum that nothing more than 2 or 3 recycled 1 liter bottles of pop. Todays cards are so expensive and over done.
I would have thought Cashman was in the HOF too.
I would have thought so too.
Those are some really clean cards. I always appreciate the history lesson too.
70's was a great time for hockey and cards. Expansion, relocations and a rival league made the NHL interesting.
Lafleur, Lapointe, and Savard were all injured, but no excuse, because you play a lot of hockey in five years and it's hard to keep everyone healthy. Someone has to pick up the slack. Regardless I feel that the Flyers who took out Minny in the next round and the New York Islanders by that time had surpassed Montreal's talent. Losing Dryden and Lemaire and Cournoyer to retirement at the end of 1979 contributed to a weakened team. You can't win them all!!
Don't forget Scotty Bowman. Montreal sorely missed him, Geoffrion did not last the season and Ruel was more of a trainer than a coach.
They still were a formidable team in 1979-80 even without those players
Whats the best vintage card shop in Toronto ?
I haven't explored Toronto yet for Cards. It's like 2 hours to Toronto so a 4 hour car ride (there & Back) and that is if Traffic is light. I should look into it.
I have been in Heroes. Place is great for Comics, Lego, cards and other stuff.
Know what I really like about your channel? The backstories, history and general information about these players. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks, You always hear about the major players but the 3rd-4th line guys you almost never hear about. The Hockey trades that happened I find really interesting.
I had that happen too. My mom threw out a lot of my 1975 and 76 cards. By 1977 I’d learned my lesson. lol.
Great finds. I’m just glad they’re a few people showing vintage hockey. Coolest logo of these? Atlanta Flames. Now I’m a Kraken fan, but I’m going off the board here. I’d like to see Quebec or Hartford return. But? That’ll never happen.
My favorite was the Barons logo though Flames comes close. Rockies were too generic looking. I agree Quebec and Hartford would be cool to see return. I had hopes for the Thrashers when Atlanta returned but glad they went to Winnipeg. Cleveland would be an interesting choice now that the city is bigger. Natural rivalry with Columbus and maybe even Detroit.
I love the Cleveland Barons logo. The Rockies logo was too generic. I like the Flames one as well.
I love the Barons logo, Flames comes in close behind
Nice pickups. Need to stop in there.
It's a pretty cool place has something for everyone innterms of hobbies on 2 floors. Too many Homeless on the street though.
@@hockeynightinbelmont9176 yeah, that area has gotten really bad
The Vachon card is hilarious. OPEECHEE didn't even make the cards back then but only the gum. Some printing company nearby did the cards.
My Dad was in the printing business around London and knew the company that made the cards. He would bring home uncut sheets and I would tack them up on a wall like a poster (1976-79). Alas they were thrown out once they got too ratty or were cut up.
That’s a great story about your Mom & Terry Crisp going to HS together for 1 year. I’m a NYI fan since 1979-80, I have their inaugural season Topps cards! I like your show, it’s very informative! Don’t stop, thanks Man
Thanks, Isles had a great team from about '75 to '87. Bill Torey & Al Arbour put together a great team following Sam Pollocks blue print for the 70's HAbs.
Definitely a bad cut and paste job. But it's what made it fun to collect.
It has been very fun to collect again.
Best place to be? Anywhere there are hockey cards.
The White Golden Seals , not teal , not green. The names today stink worse ; The Seattle Kraken??? How about The Seattle Cougars? The Anaheim Mighty Ducks??? How about The Anaheim Americans? The Utah???
You like the original White Jerseys. I hate the Seattle Kraken name. The Seattle Mist would have been better though that was the name of the Legends League of (female) Football team. One guy I know thought that the Seattle Protest or Seattle Chaz had a nice ring to it.
You brought up a good point! Yeah, you could look up the back of all of the 1969 OPC set & see what the puzzle is in 22 seconds today! But , what’s the fun in that!! I agree Man, I think that everyone should slow down & go through some Vintage Hockey, Baseball, Football & Basketball cards. Thanks Bro
I learned how to read thanks to Hockey Cards. I could probably save a few bucks and buy the whole set at once (though the wife wouldn't like me blowing anywhere from $400-2,000 on a full set) but it is fun to go searching gradually.
Pro hockey alumni does a really nice in depth story on Jacques Richard. He certainly had his demons. Rene Robert for Eddie Shack? Clear the track. If I had to pick between the CGS and Flames? It’s super close, but I prefer the CGS. Further? I preferred the LA kings uniforms back then. There’s too much black in pro sports uniforms now. The purple and gold had a royal feel
I saw that Hockey alum story on Richard. Here is a link to Eddie Shack trades as well to the main website nhltradetracker.com/user/trade_list_by_player/Shack,Eddie I lean more towards the CGS jersey but it was really close. The Kings jersey looked too much like the Lakers (same owner) and then the new one looked too much like the Raiders. There has to be a better colour scheem for LA.
Atlanta Flames, because of the flame inside the A & the colors, orange. Later to become the Calgary flames, nice fiery C ! But then they try to do to much, like the NYI 1995 fish sticks, after so much tradition w/the Islander patch! Thank goodness, we put the pressure on mgmt to change back to the Island patch!!
The Original Islanders Jersey was so much better than anything else they tried ( Captain Highliner Jersey was terrible). I like the Oakland Jersey a bit more than the Atlanta One but it was close. The Atlanta Flames Jersey was so much better than the Thrashers. I am glad Calgary kept the Flames name and made it their own because the CAlgary Cowboys of the old WHA had god awful Jersey.
Ralph Backstrom…rookie of the year in 1959
New sub here! Thanks for sharing this brother! Hope you're having a good day! 💪😁🤘 #ripemall
Thanks, waiting for the next lot of cards to come in the mail.
Gary "Suitcase" Smith, his first Canucks card!!!!!
It was his first Canucks card. He was traded from Chicago to Vancouver which explains the lack of a logo. He later got traded for one of the other goalies in this lot (Cesare Maniago) to Minnisota.
I love the Dan Bouchard card with the Atlanta Flames. Rangers made a mistake trading away Middleton for Hodge, as well as, Park for Vadnais.
That is one of my favorites.
Yeah, the Bouchard card IS cool... Brad Parks card is really nice too!!!!!
The green, gold and white Seals uniforms was the Charlie O’Finley ownership era. They even briefly wore white skates. He modeled the colors after his Oakland A’s. He also owned the Memphis Tams of the ABA and changed their color scheme too. O’Finley was notorious for inviting players he was negotiating contracts with to lunch. He brought them to his office and served them Campbell’s soup he heated over a hot plate in said office.
I remember hearing about the White Skates and saw a pair at the HHOF.
I saw a pair of those white skates in the Hockey Hall of Fame. a Guy from my Hometown, Jim Weaver was drafted by the Seals in the 9th Round 146th overall of the 1975 draft. He played Goal but was always behind Meloche, Simmons & Edwards on the depth chart. He did dress for a couple of games with Minnisota '79 but never saw the ice.
And we all know how Middleton's career went in Boston
Rangers lost on that trade big time. I even think they even lost on the Esposito-Vadnais for Ratelle-Park trade. Though the Rangers did make it to the final in '79 while Boston made it there in '77 & '78.
Bruins won Cup in 1970, Montreal won Cup in 1971, Bruins won Cup in 1972, Montreal won Cup in 1973, Flyers won Cup in 1974 & ‘75 Montreal won Cup from 1976-‘79 Islanders won Cup from 1980-1983 ,etc,,,.
this was the only set i always dreamed of completing when i was starting in 1990 but was missing Dryden-Lafleur-Orr-Howe so i gave up and sold the 80 base cards i had from my dads collection.
Thats rough. Hard to let go of the early OPC's. eventually I will have to get those same 4 cards. My problem was I didn't take care of my cards (1975-85) and my parents threw them out. I still have some cards from Dad from the 1950's Beliveau's RC.
@@hockeynightinbelmont9176 my dad had a shoebox that i opened only once in my life before getting slapped behind the head and threathen to never open that box again..in the early 80s that was normal stuff haha... he probably had the entire sets from 60 to 75 the year he got sick.I remember seeing the Tallboys and the TV cards as i called them (1966 Topps). His favorite player were Bobby Orr and Gordie Howe so that shoebox disappeared after his death and either my mom put them all in garbage because she hated hockey cards or someone broke in and stole them while we were camping. All i had left was few 67 to 72 and most of the 1981 to 1984 and i sold them all.Only kept 3 Bobby Orr Topps 1967 his 2nd year as a souvenir from my dad. That shoebox would have worth a small fortune.
71-72 is one of the most iconic sets. Amazes me how the picture quality was better then the next ten years that followed.
Thats rough picking that low in 3 of the rounds.
Cool I love seeing the old WHA cards.
I enjoy the looks of this set. The Brett Hull RC was so huge. A part of me wishes the Gretzky card was a horrific air brush job.
Would have been cool to have a last card with the oilers with simply a "Now with Kings" mention.
That is what I wanted. One last Oilers card with the Kings logo and now with Kings.@@lonkylaine
I remember that Hull trade was no big deal and that the Bullard for Gilmore & Hunter was big. Of course the Gretzky deal was a huge deal and led to the saturation of the Hockey Card industry. I wanted to see Grezt in the Oilers jersey with "now with Kings"
I remember having this sey. I think it's still ay my Mom's house.
The dynasty had to come to and end at some point. But the loss of Lafleur and Larouche was HUGE. The Habs won the cup every year I was in high school. It was magic and an incredible time in my life. Oddly it kinda ruined me as far as NHL hockey was concerned. After all those years, mid 60’s until 1980, I never really followed hockey again at that level. A high that just couldn’t be matched.
The cards are from the 1971-72 season, so it was actually Boston that won the Cup that season. The top card at the beginning of the video and the Houle card have tape marks on the back. Do all of them have that? If yes, that's probably why they were so cheap. The goalie equipment back then was actually heavier than it is today, but it was smaller. Maybe that's what you meant.
Boston won in 1970 & 72, while Montreal won in 1971 & 73". These cards were released in the autumn of 1971 but have the 1970-71 season stats so Montreal won the cup for that set. The marks on the back are caused by the gum that used to be in the packs. Not all the cards have that. Heroes in London would still charge me $2 for the Houle card and maybe $1 for the one with a damaged corner. But generally they charge $2.50 for common cards & more for Goalies. Your right the Goalie equipment was heavier especially when wet and didn't allow you to slide side to side very well. I played some goal back in House league for the fun of it until slapshots started whizzing around my head.
@@hockeynightinbelmont9176 You might want to take another look at the cards with the stained backs. I'm sure that those are tape stains and not gum stains.
I have other cards from that set that I bought at other places and have that kind of stain on them. So either it's a gum or tape stain. @@montrealsports29
I went back to St. Jacobs and bought another lot of those cards and they all have a stain at the back so your right it is tape. Makes me wonder what kind of tape because usually when you peel tape off it rips or lifts the paper underneath and I just don't see that kind of damage. @@montrealsports29
@@hockeynightinbelmont9176 Those cards were most likely taped into a scrapbook with scotch tape and stayed in the scrapbook for many years. After a while, the scotch tape becomes brittle and can be easily removed from the cards (it basically just falls off), but it leaves a stain where it had been taped.
If Montreal had won, they would’ve faced the Sabres who were coached by Bowman who had left the previous year.
Buffalo probably would have taken that series since Montreal was without Lafleur. Buffalo would have had an edge in goaltending. Sauve & Edwards won the Vezina that year and Sauve was up & coming. Coaching was another area that Buffalo had the obvious edge.
@@hockeynightinbelmont9176 It would be interesting if they had lost to Buffalo since Buffalo was the last team to beat them before they began their dynasty. Then having Buffalo end their dynasty would be a nice bookend. Plus, during those dynasty years (plus the year before and after) Buffalo was the only team that had an even regular season against the Habs. They matched up with them well. They had a good French scoring line, a good checking line with Gare, Luce and Ramsay, plus they can skate.
Montreal had better defenceand with Dryden in net they were evn better. But Montreal in 79-80 was not the same team that won cups. A Buffalo-Habs series would have been interesting and would ment a different final. Flyers might have beaten the Isles in the Semis.@@September2004
I have to check this place out.
