Hi. My RUclips Channel specifically covers 3 areas of my life. Firstly my interest in restoring and repairing surfboards and ocean craft. Secondly fitness classes for seniors and those who want a gentler form of exercise covering foundational modes of exercise such as strength, balance, cardiovascular fitness, flexibility and mobility. Thirdly I have some videos covering sports and adventures that I love.

Surfboard Restoration - Heat Dameged
Просмотров 26011 месяцев назад
Together with my daughter Giselle, we restore a beautiful modern epoxy DHD surfboard that was left in a car in the hot sun and sustained bad de lamination. We used epoxy resin, fibreglass, Q cell and spray paint to give it a second life. It was Giselles first time repairing boards.
Surfboard Restoration Al Merrick Step by Step
Просмотров 1,9 тыс.Год назад
My 16 year old son Elijah chose this beaten up Al Merrick from a pile of boards left for dead as his second board to restore. It had a damaged nose, several dings, a busted FCS2 fin box and broken grip pad. He used resin, fibreglass, expanding foam, Cabosil, together with the FCS2 jig to fix the fin box, and spray paint to make it look and feel like a fully restored newer board. Enjoy the video...

Nice!! Love that you gave it a new life!
🔥
thanks for sharing mate! doesn't the paint come off if you don't put a thin layer of hot coat over it?
Nice try 2024 ruclips.net/video/YwIc_z1vsyE/видео.html
We broke an Al merrik in 2ft gutless surf. I think a whole batch was defective. We epoxy ours back together with oak dowels. Defective surfboard glassing
Sorry, but you've made a pretty bad job on this one IMHO. If I was the customer, I wouldn't have pay for it !😤
@@tetrakite thanks for the encouragement 😩
@@gregssurfboardrestoration you're welcome ! 😉 BUT I can (want to) explain my point of view: Your use of these wood picks wasn't necessary, and as the bottom of the board was still in good shape, you should have relied on it to maintain a nice nose rocker. By tearing it apart, and more, with the picks, you've lost the reference of the rocker, and you haven't been able to build it back. Sorry, it's my opinion, as a rider/builder/restorer. Oh, by the way, this expanding foam looks very difficult to use, and makes more of a mess than anything else, don't you think so ?
Great. This is very informative for me as my longboard was broken into two last week.
Foaming glue spritz with water as it dries. It won’t rise as much as two part foam
Remarkable job! Enjoyed watching.
Nice work, your son will be stoked!
maybe you could have injected the foam through few drilled holes in the deck instead of re-fiberglasing the entire thing?...
💞Wow💜💛💛💛💜💛💛💛
Too perfect, love to see it!
Wow dude thank you for doing this. I live on a Caribbean island with no access to materials without taking a ferry ride. I happen to have torn the fin box out on my shred sled and was a little unsure how to approach this project because of the whole "futureflex" thing so imagine my surprise to see this video covering exactly what I need to do. Really appreciate it.
Although quick question my box broke out clean with the fin still attached any reason I couldn't just clean it up and epoxy the old one back in there?
Never cut towards yourself. Especially with a bloody stanley knife! Jesus. One slip and that whole blade ends up in your tummy! It happens quick.
This hurts my brain but, I can't look away. Good attempt though. I hope you don't sell these boards or charge people for repairs. Looks like you got a few on the go there.
EPIC! What a finish. Time to shred!!
Yewwww🎉
Nice repair mate! Made it look easy.
Hi Greg! Really helpful videos! I have a large delam on a longboard. Was wondering if you recommend expanding foam instead of resin and q cell to fill the gap. Any advice is greatly appreciated! Thanks!
Top job man, thank you for sharing.
When I used the pour foam I mixed for 20 seconds but it didn’t pour super easily not sure why. I used 1oz mixes per part a b.
could watch this all day
You guys are getting pretty dam good at all of this, epic to see 🤙 a happy new year to you!
Thanks mate. We have certainly learned a ton from your experience and videos. Enjoying the journey. Happy new year
I ordered a couple of your shirts today for myself and Elijah to wear around the streets of Manly
@@gregssurfboardrestoration o, you legend. Gonna be the sharpest dudes walking around Manly!
Pretty interesting!
Why do u use expanding foam and not q cell?
Bigger cavities like fin boxes and large dings it’s best to use use foam because surfboards are made from foam, keeps the board light. You’re not pouring heaps of resin into the cavity. I do use resin/qcell for small dings and usually a thin layer over the expanding foam before fiberglass
sick repair, do you mind saying where you get your expanding foam from?
Meury Enterprises 40 Glenvale Crescent Mulgrave Vic 3170 Phone: (03) 9560 7744 ECOFOAM GP450 004
Looks like you nailed it Greg. Great dedication to go back to it and fix up the mistakes. I think I would have given it a bit of extra wax to cover it up, thrown it in the car, and started surfing it.
Hi Greg, where did you get the expanding foam? And what type/brand is it? Thanks
I get it from a chemical solutions distributor or polyurethane distributor. In Australia they are Meury distributors. I use the eco foam GP 450 - it’s a 50/50 mix density 45
You're an eco warrior my friend, keeping that crap outta landfills
Thanks mate. Your excellent videos and input on Facebook ding repair have been a large contribution for my learning. I hope your RUclips channel becomes a real success. I certainly enjoy the restorations and making videos but gosh the videos are a lot of work
Acrylic spray paint?
Yes. This was the Belton Molotow brand. I also use liquitex. And acrylic varnish clear coat
@@gregssurfboardrestoration cool thanks. I have found with liquidtex it is a lot harder to work with and is very watery/splatters. Whereas belton molotow colors are more of a solid covering.
Nicely done 🤙
Thanks ✌
Bit too late here in Korea but looking forward to watching tomorrow!
how much paint do you need for a board like that?
I mostly now use spray paint. It’s much quicker. This marine paint was good though. It’s very durable. Ii can’t say how much I used but 1 can of marine paint has lasted many boards. I now use 2 tins of spray paint on 1 full board plus 1 acrylic varnish clear
It's great that you explained the issues that you had, I learnt a lot. Also, using the foam to cover that before puttong the glass on it is something i want to try next one i do. What I would have done differently is to paint the black lines instead of masking them to see the original ones. The end result is much better than I thought at the beginning.
Thanks. I’m not quite sure what you mean regarding black lines. I used the tape as an outline for the spray paint
@@gregssurfboardrestoration I meant to paint the lines instead of seeing the original lines from underneath.
That board is sick he's kid gonna love that looks new. He doesn't need carbon he did a good job on the pinlines. I wish I could restore like that.i got one to do now, I enjoyed watching video. Jim austin
Thanks. Practice makes perfect. My daughter has used this board for 2 months and it’s going strong
Oh, I see . Not a complete break, just a buckle. Okay , nice work
Epic job. I just hate the extra weight in the middle of the board. Maybe you did it so you can't tell the difference. Who knows
The expanding foam keeps the weight right down. Without expanding foam you’d have to use lots of resin Q cell which would be much heavier.
@@gregssurfboardrestoration you got it taken care of. See, I didn't know this. Old days it was just heeps of resin yes.
guess you could say it was wetnwild 🤣
Great job, looks awesome
C+
Thanks. Using Eco foam 450 - 45 kg/m3
Thx!
respect! i tryed repairing my board myself, but it went a bit more messy
Practice makes perfect
Hey Greg, appreciate your videos and explanations. What density expanding foam do you use?
It is 45 density
I see that you use the same precision measuring technique that I use.
Yes I use a scale for epoxy resin but not for foam. Works great
Nice job. 🤙🏼
