John Cuneo demo
Illustrator John Cuneo stopped by the illustration program at Syracuse University to demonstrate how he works and give a presentation in our symposium class.
Not only did we have the pleasure of John's visit but the students also had the opportunity to look though many of his sketchbooks, in which he draws incessantly.
John discussed his career, drawing, how he applies watercolors and answered questions from students. And congratulations to John on winning his 9th medal from the Society of Illustrators.

Just saw this book today and not to diminish your wife's great writing in any way because the book was fantastic but your paintings were so beautiful I found it difficult to pay attention to the story. Fantastic work! As a watercolor artist myself, I am floored by your skill and aspire to be at this level

It makes zero sense to do a color portrait from a black and white photo from the 1800s and makes even less sense to confuse students by teaching them to do the same. The Zorn palette is used for color paintings for the express purpose of simplifying COLORS and COLOR TEMPERATURE when painting a portrait of a human from direct observation of a living model in front of you. This demo completely does away with the most important aspect of portrait painting which is observation of a live model. How can you observe light, color, etc if working from a black and white photo from the 1800s?! The answer is.... you can't. Edges are for more important than color and Ive never heard a serious portraitist say otherwise. Completely useless demo.

Fabulous demo! Now I understand why Elwood is so particular about brushes. He NEEDS to have the POINT and the adequate BELLY in the same brush.

Thanks a million for back ground music that doesn't get in the way of the value of the video. Could leave it out all together (for me) but at least this one doesn't take away from the content by being too loud. V. worthwhile video. Have taken notes and will watch again to make sure I didn't miss anything.

  • @virgocali

Thank you so much for making this video. Just by watching you, I've learned much more of how painting is approached. I like how you have control over each stage, and can go back and forth over the layers of paint. I'm assuming that there are 'drying spaces' inbetween some of these sessions. I like your limited palette, how you work with the board you can turn at will, and coming back in with pencil, etc. I have your book, "This is the Dream" and appreciate your work.
