CNW Harvard Sub N Scale Layout - Ep 16 - The First Level is BUILT!
Episode 16 of the Chicago & North Western Harvard Subdivision in N Scale. The Harvard Subdivision imagines a world where the CNW is still operating today, and features modern operations in N scale. This episode we don't run any trains, but that's because we're too busy building! With the wall finally finished, I get the remaining benchwork down for the first level, get all the foam laid down, get all the backboards up, and continue laying roadbed and track as far as I can. Huge construction progress in this update!

    Do you have list of brands for the supplies you use? Specifically road bed and flex track. It has been a few years since I have done any building. I lost all my notes from my previous train club in my last move. Very nice looking layout. I hope to start working on mine later this year. I don’t have as much room as you have.

      I use Peco Code 55. I find it has a pretty realistic looking size to it, but with Peco's structure that includes a rail component UNDER the code 55, it makes it much easier to work with in my opinion in shaping curves. The roadbed is Midwest Products cork roadbed for n scale. Hope that helps!

    Great minds think alike! A couple of years ago I installed a drop-gate on my N scale operation. I used a "piano" hinge that is as long as the drop section is wide and then two barrel bolts on the other end for security, one towards each edge of the drop section. That made sure that the two edges on that end stayed aligned. It's worked well for many years and it looks like yours will as well. Keep up the good work and I'll be watchin'!

    I found your channel a few months back, and was briefly disappointed by the fact that someone else already thought of doing an alternate history CNW, but we're far enough apart in era and location that it should be just fine. Mine is set in the late 1980s, and what makes it alt history is mostly the bold and slightly insane plan of revamping the Cowboy Line, extending to Salt Lake City, and merging with the Western Pacific to make a Chicago-San Francisco connection that is just slightly longer than BN's Chicago-Seattle connection, but should theoretically be faster. The changes are subtle, namely because I'm modeling an area that stays more or less the same feature wise, but still apparent. CNW's predisposition towards EMD power means that the C40-8s ordered in the late 80s in real life are a second order of SD60s, half of them standard cabs and the second half 'Triclops' 60Ms. They also order a handful of GP60s by trading EMD some mothballed WP equipment. Last and most interesting, Oelwein's 'last hurrah' as a locomotive rebuild shop, CNW acquired schematics and details of the CF7 rebuilds done by the Santa Fe, and rebuilds some of their Fs to the second model pattern. These were rebuilt in the late 70s and still saw limited local and yard service into the early 2000s.

    If you're modeling the CNW as if the UP never took over there's a good possibility that those units had been repainted by the 2010's. UP tends to run everything into the ground and then maybe rebuild it. I think a little weathering makes everything look better but they don't necessarily have to be rust buckets.

    • @cnwnscale
      @cnwnscale 9 дней назад

      Totally agree, my goal is to weather them enough to show that they've been in service for 20+ years, but are in good shape. If you look at photos of the CNW twins in the 2010s, they were in pretty good shape too. I definitely don't want to overdo it on the weathering!

At least you do have green and yellow equipment. Have you thought using a more stable area to secure the track at section joints? You place a block of wood 2x2? At the same elevation as top of cork/ bottom of ties. Install pc board ties on either side of the joint. Solder rails to ties, cut rails. Now everything will line up. Google pc board ties for Free-moN it might give you some leads or ideas Greg

    Hi, I really like the fact you are doing a large layout in N scale. I do a very different road in the Cascade mountains over White Pass which never happened. I have a N scale friend who has played a large influence on my plan both positive and negative. The plus is he very much enjoys ops and lots of switching. The down side is his stub end staging yards. Running 30 trains in an op session requires a long time rearranging trains for the next session. Therefore, I going with loop staging on the ends of the line. Since you plan on passenger trains, and they are powered on both ends, it may not be a pain to keep things moving during a session or between. The majority of my trains will be freight but they will be people movers, too. George Run8

    • @cnwnscale
      @cnwnscale 8 месяцев назад

      Not at this point. I'm trying to keep it consistent with similar higher speed trains that ran in 2013. The Acela and the Wolverine on Amtrak for example run without a dedicated baggage car. Same with the Brightline service that got introduced in Florida. I will say I was initially skeptical of running without a baggage car, but after riding the Acela last year on vacation and seeing that cars had ample space to put plenty of luggage, I get it now!
