Displaying a ZX Spectrum loading screen on a Tatung Einstein - Now in Technicolor!
Welcome to the channel, thanks for stopping by, it is much appreciated!
In the last video, I showed you all the Einstein loading a .SCR file saved from a ZX Spectrum.
In this video, as promised, we have colours.
The colour and attribute side of things was tricky on the Einstein due to the way the VDP chipset works. The palette is also washed out compared to the ZX Spectrum and there is no way of changing this.
I have yet to find a way to update the screen with the colour attributes in the same way as the speccy does, but I am still working on it and should hopefully get a 3rd video on the subject.
You can find the source code and some SCR files here:

Welcome to the Retro Tech Loft, thanks for stopping by, it is much appreciated! The ZX Spectrum and other popular 8 bit home computers from the early 1980s had a unique way of loading and displaying a loading screen for a program or game. For a standard screen, compatible with ZX Spectrum, a SCREEN$ file is 6912 bytes. It's just a dump of the screen memory. The first 6144 bytes store the screen...

Welcome to the Retro Tech Loft, thanks for stopping by, it is much appreciated! Recap: The Tatung Einstein was primarily aimed at business users when it was launched in the early 1980s. With its 80 column addon card and CPM compatibility, it was perfect for business. It just arrived a little too late. Competing with the likes of the ZX Spectrum and the Amstrad CPC, the appeal for home use never...

Welcome to Mike's Retro Tech. Thanks for joining me again this week. My Dell Inspiron 5570 (RUclips editing) laptop is getting a bit long in the tooth now. It is coming up to 6 years old and the fan is almost constantly on all the time. Not having the current funds to replace it with a newer model, I have been progressively upgrading the components to make it last a bit longer now that it is ou...

Creating a new fishing bag (A half video .. you will see why!)

Welcome to the Retro Tech Loft, thanks for stopping by, it is much appreciated! Following on from my vintage fishing chair video a couple of weeks ago, this one was meant to complete my cheap fishing tackle setup. Using some of the remaining brown camo fabric, I had an idea to create a stink bag for my landing net and chair. These are about £20-30 to buy so why not create one. Unfortunately, as...

Music comparison on the Tatung Einstein - PSG in basic vs PT2 tracker in Assembler

Welcome to the Retro Tech Loft, thanks for stopping by, it is much appreciated! Since getting my Einstein out of the loft and fixing the keyboard I wanted to try more .DSK files off the Gotek, that don't work so well in MAME. Bell Software's disk 10 compilation has a basic music playback program that showcased the power of the PSG commands (Or lack of) of the AY/YM chip in the Einstein. The PT2...

I watched this whole thing to see how to reattach the covers and you pulled a "a few minutes later," at the most important part!!!
BREAKING NEWS! A SIM card to datapak adapter is being designed. With this special adapter, the Psion Organizer will be able to read the data on a SIM card & write to it. The SIM card will also be able to store programmed apps, & be used as RAM. The file system that a SIM card uses is very similar, if not exact, to what the datapak uses, they are both compatible with EEPROM flash memory, so keep all those old defunct SIM cards because they can be repurposed for use with the Psion Organizer 2, remember you heard this from me first😁👍 Effectively, the datapak IS a type of predecessor to the SIM card!
Excellent news!
I have a PCB that's completely corroded unfortunately. Not sure we're to get a replacement.
@@TheHammemo unfortunately, the only way to get a replacement would be to buy a none working elmo and hope the board is fixable. I doubt you will find just the circuit board on its own. We need companies like PCBWAY to have the design for it so replicas can be made.
@MikesRetroTech PCB would be simple to recreate but that chip under the epoxy might be a problem. Might be able to get it off without destroying it but don't know if it even works.
Can I have that for my channel, please?
Unfortunately it was sold over 12 months ago. Look on eBay, there should be plenty available to buy.
Why the hell does everyone call the tapes "microdrives"? 🤪
@@mikeymcmikeface5599 the microdrives are tapes. A continuous magnetic tape inside the plastic cartridge. Microdrives access the data much faster than regular cassettes but in the same manner, using a 'tape head' to read the data.
@MikesRetroTech No. Microdrive is the device you have on the left: it literally says so on top... 🤡
@@mikeymcmikeface5599 The ZX Microdrive is a magnetic-tape data storage system launched in July 1983 by Sinclair Research for its ZX Spectrum home computer (Wikipedia). Technically the cartridges are tapes. It's a symentic thing in what people call them. The interface 2 was a proper cartridge based system as we know them, with a finger board cartridge that slots into a socket on the interface. Microdrive used tape based media, so technicaly correct. Not a disc, not a cartridge, just a tape in a different housing.
@@MikesRetroTech Do you understand at all what I am saying? Or what you quoted yourself? Just stop and think before continuing to argue.
@mikeymcmikeface5599 I am obviously missing your point! Is there some time frame in the video where I say tape? I haven't watched it back since I uploaded it over 12 months ago.
Mike I am from Greece. How can I send you the box to repair my elmo ?
Unfortunately, I do not do repairs for other people as I do not have a studio/workspace anymore.
Battery door is a cool mod
in 2024, you managed to help me out! Thanks!
Great news!. At least I have helped someone this year.😁
Remember extract microdrive before turn computer on or off or all your work can go to hell
Excellent! Many thanks for posting, fixed it for me. Still loving my Linx 1010B tablet in 2024.
I wish I still had mine. Oh well!
A.C.G. is "Ashby Computers and Graphics" aka Ultimate Play the Game!
I was very happy to find this video. I bought a heap of used Hot Wheels many years ago and found some of these in the lot. This one is by far the coolest one. I find it interesting that the U.S. release of this does not have a removable battery cover. So I'm going to have to drill this one out.

Excellent easy to follow and worked first time. Great

do you have circuit it ?
Hi, Hollo, please can you tell me were I can got the Battery I try to recharch but unfortunately is not take charge only power 🔌 light so I think the problem is the battery 🔋.Sincereley thanks
Just look at the battery for any markings or wording and Google it. That is all I do when looking for battery replacements. Usually the local market area has a hardware store that stocks them.
Hi i just saved a 1996 mattel tickle me elmo i bought him at my local salvation army thrift store he had battery corrosion on his battery terminals i gently scraped them now he works excellent

Hey Mike, as a 90s kid who just raided his mums garage to find my Hot Wheels x-v racers for my son and was devastated that they aren’t working I’m stoked to have found your video! I can confirm for you that this is the designed way they work and you aren’t missing any parts with this unit, as a kid I never held the wheels to build up the charge but instead just let the wheels spin until at top speed and then let rip 👌🏼 shall have to pop my battery packs open and take a look 😂
Hey i was wondering how to change the bulb? Like how to remove the glass shade without the risk of breaking it?
Sorry, it's been so long since I did this video I don't remember and we no longer have the lamps. Possibly there is a thumbscrew that you can loosen and the glass can then be removed?
Before you bought that, was the condition new or used? When you bought it from eBay?
Probably Spares/Repairs. It's so long ago now I don't remember.
Many thanks for the disassembly tutorial. Have a good one
Hi, I’m lose remote control
Love the Mug! Thanks for the video
Hey, Which tuning coil should I adjust for the PB/AIR part of the radio? Also, is there a way to increase the range on the radio? Thanks
Sorry, I have no idea. I am not a radio expert and I no longer have the device to check.

I have one of these, and my backlight is fully functional! It came with a razor in a gift set, as it was a promotional item for Gillette Champions. Hopefully this provides some insight as to the origin!
Dors anyone know of the hx version of this monitor works?
Seems crazy to release what looks like a Spectrum port when there is a much superior MSX version by Mr Micro
Yes indeed. Probably much easier and quicker to use the direct Spectrum source code than the MSX? I haven't seen the max version so will put that on my list of things to try!
Thanks for the video - I'm trying to refurb my EVS-1 and watched all the way through to see how to get the front panel apart because I've lost a button and want to remove another one to 3D model it... tantalising! How did you get the buttons unstuck? Any tips would be gratefully received! Also the CR2032 on mine hadn't leaked either.. thankfully!
This looks interesting. Was it yourself that had a Speculator?
Yes I had a speculator back in the day. Wish I still had one!
Muy buen video! Pece a la diferencia de idioma pude comprender muy bien, de manera que pronto remplazare unas baterías de un juguete de MC Donalds. Muchas gracias!
Hi, nice video, can you recll where you got the 3d printed belts with the pins for the stylus printed on the belt ?
They would have been from eBay. Usually, all my spares are from there.
It's the MSX version. Written for the hardware, not just a Spectrum port. Toshiba gave it away with their computer Christmas 1984
Colours are very MSX like - not surprising as they use the same chipset I believe.
Would anyone be willing to take measurements (diameter / number of teeth) of the small gear that connects to the motor? Mine seems to have shattered so I'll need to get or try to 3d print a replacement.
I'm so grateful to you that I could repair my Elmo. My daughter got 1995 Elmo when she was a few years old and was frightend when Elmo shook at that time. Unfortunately it disappeared later and my daughter was very sad. I managed to get the exact model of Elmo but it was't vibrating. Thanks to your video it is now perfect with vibration. It was very easy to repair watching your video.
I used to have this as a toddler and when I got older my parents made me donate him. I just found another at the opshop and he wasn't shaking. Thanks so much for helping me fix him and bringing back some childhood memories
12:58 This Speccy was so ahead of its time: it was connected to the web! I'll get my coat...
What’s the battery that I need for replacing them?
Im searching too

Great job, you did there! I have two Ataris 1040 ST here. One original STe that's working like a charm. (Hands off) and an older STfm That I could use to do the same project as you. Thanks for the videos! Did you manage to get the floppy drive light working?
I would put in external Gotek drive and mod my ST to be able to switch between boot drive priority. But you already glued it in, so...
How do you fix black on screen?
It was in good condition until you butchered it. Thats not how you remove panels from these things. A heat gun would have softened the glue from the tape. Before diving in always look for a service manual or information on forums before touching anything.
this is my child game, father bought this game for me as a new year gift, i really love it, thx your video, help me recall memory
How is the quality of video so bad ?
It's a retro tech channel, uses old cameras probably. might make it the only true retro tech channel. 🤔
