This film was a 8mm Cine Films Digitised with a Winait Film Scanner.
It shows the USS Springfield III (CL-66) in Valetta, Malta Harbour during the 1960s. Painting is taking place on the hull of the ship.
USS Springfield was a Cleveland-class light cruiser of the United States Navy, which were built during World War II. The class was designed as a development of the earlier Brooklyn-class cruisers, the size of which had been limited by the First London Naval Treaty. The start of the war led to the dissolution of the treaty system, but the dramatic nee...

@@wtfbuddy1 Thank you Pete. The full video will be available soon.

I noticed the obvious straight away! Lets see how many others do. You don't have to look hard!
Binns or was it still Hammonds in 70's?
WOW, that brought back happy memories, thank you for this😀
I hope everyone had a good time :)
Went there in the 70s
The NRM is due to celebrate its 50th anniversary, and it’s a shame it’s in a dire state. It arguably peaked in the 90s and 2000s, and now they barely have anything and their long-term development plan is turning the museum into a generic children’s playground.
@@joshslater2426 I had no idea about that. It's a National disgrace. Steam Trains may not be on the main line services, but they are very popular. I presume those running the NRM have never worked on Steam Trains.
As Thomas the Tank engine once said..."never trust locomotives with domes! MALLARD (3:45) is a world famous steam engine. Nice piano work there Chris...
@@dieseldavetrains8988 Saw Mallard in its heyday travelling at speed on the Essendine Strait, near Grantham. It is nice piano work Dave, unfortunately... Not me!!
Some nice gems of locomotives preserved, thanks for sharing Chris. Cheers
@@wtfbuddy1 Thank you Pete. Only been to the museum once - about 25 years ago!
Great stuff!
@@RazSux Thank you very much👍
Madame (Ann) once again the star of the show, cracking little cruise. By the way, ice rink boots don't cut it outdoors (3:47) Ann. Boat drill was very labour intensive, no motor in the boat and hand winches on deck, very old fashioned from that period. Nice piano work too Chris.
Thank you Dave. Yes, I wondered why Ann was trying to skate on that bit of ice - it's a wonder she didn't break her ankle! Not me on the piano tho!!
I wonder with "Global Warming" whether those severe northern European winters are still experienced? Great little ship, glad to hear they preserved it.
Great minds think alike Dave! That's what I was thinking. Winters aren't as bad - because some ski resorts don't get as much snow as they used to. In this film there was still a lot of snow in mid- April. Will find out if GW is being affected in Norway.
Sadly known as Skagness now how times have changed ...😔
Nice video of it's voyage from village to village, love the kids in their sweaters that mum knitted for them. How's the weather, watching some of the storm damage around the UK, here we will get another 15 cm of white stuff. Cheers and take care
Thank you Pete. Would love to do this trip. Almost booked one recently, but held off! We were lucky in the east. Went to football match this afternoon - dreadful conditions - rain and high wind. Overhead kick won the match with 12 mins remaining! No snow here. Keep warm from your ❄️
Good looking bike! I would definitely would want one!
It most certainly is and it's a pleasure to ride it.
Very nice quality Chris has reproduced well.
Thank you Richard. The last part (three) is even better!!
That's a very nice and tidy little ship. A winter cruise it is, looks freezing. Good work Chris.
Thank you Dave. Far more snow in Part Two and Three. We saw this ship which has been restored as a museum attraction at Stockmarken 12 months ago. Should like to do the Coastal Express - 34 ports in 12 days.
ist das eine schöne Erinnerung! 🎉❤

I went away on HMS Mersey which was probably a sister ship, when I was a Sea Cadet 😊
@@KeithMasonCanada Did you do many trips and move on to RN?
@ no I joined the MN as a Electrical Engineer
@@KeithMasonCanada How long were you in the MN?
@@TransportNostalgia only 2 years with New Zealand shipping.
I sailed on the Mary, Caronia and the Saxonia. I lived across the river from Southampton and remember well seeing at least six to ten liners docked along side the wharves. I had left the Merchant Navy just before the strike. For those that didn't live back then it was a great time to be alive. I was saddened to see that the Royal Pier burnt down, best dance hall ever. Thanks for putting this up, brought back a lot of memories!
@eddiexxxx Thank you for watching. You were fortunate to live so close to Southampton Docks. I live near Boston Docks and in the 1960/70s were able to go onto the docks. Only coasters and not in the same league as you, but perhaps gave me the interest in ships and my route into Merchant Navy. I joined when the British MN was diminishing (1974). How long were you in MN and what did you do?
A wonderful capture.
@@isthisduckdead Thank you.
Pity there was no audio, would have been interesting to have heard the speeches, the bands and the sailors singing.😊
Yes Dave. However it would have been tricky to get the audio from the film!

@@ashhay1378 Many thanks for that. All in a nutshell 👍👍
I would love one of these.
@@isthisduckdead It's a good bike to ride. There is a link in the description 😉
Well demonstrated. Looks like a lovely bike and the fact that it folds in half, will be easy to fit in small boots of cars.
@@ashhay1378 Thank you. I had to put the back seat down in my Ford Fiesta to get it in the boot. But still easier than a normal bike.
Looks very interesting where can i get one?

Who remembers the monorail at Butlins?
Yep, and the miniature railway, and the chairlift.
Some classic aircraft there Chris, I have some pictures somewhere of some Lockheed Tri-Stars operated by Gulf Air, taken at various Middle East terminals when I was over in Bahrain around 1984 I think.
Quite a line up of ships, especially liners and some of the film looks as if it may have been taken during the maritime srike in the late 1960s. In addition to the "Queen Mary", at various points I can see the "Queen Elizabeth", "Caronia", and either "Franconia" or "Carmania". In addition to the Cunard' vessels the P & O' ships "Canberra" & "Arcadia" feature. From Union Castle it looks to be "Pendennis Castle", & "Edinburgh Castle", with their running mate, "SA Vaal". There is also a couple of shots of two Red Funnel' ferries, and the tug/tender, "Calshot" is assisting the US Lines freighter to her birth. There could also be a glimpse of Royal Mail's, "Andes". Thanks for posting.
@@tonystevens9278 Thank you for watching and your detailed information. I will change the description in next few days.
ARCADIA was a regular to Australia back in the time. What a motorbike & side car at 2:40 mark, also looked like CANBERRA in the distance at 1:45 mark. Was that you tinkling the ivories Chris? Great clip would have been much better if it was longer.
Thank you Dave. I also noticed the Sidecar - a rare object these days. I can't make out the Canberra though. Not me playing. Perhaps ask my friend who plays drums in local bands, to bring them down so can do some recordings for background music whilst I play the piano. The film was on a 150ft reel, I bought recently on Ebay, had other stuff on it.

Thank you.

@@prof1982 I prefer the Escort Sports. Takes me back to the late 1970s - I had one - bright orange - wish I still had it!!
Very nice looking old ship with great lines.
Think I preferred the 1960s Skegness, nice and clean. Its now a shit hole, fast food, drugs and migrants.
@@andrewwardle-d5b We used to have our Sumer holidays in Skegness in the 1960s. Also visited most weekends during the Summer.

That sounds an exciting trip for you - how old were you at the time?
@TransportNostalgia hi I was 12 Yr old my first trips were when I was in a carry cot dad had a Bedford s type tipper he would take agricultural lime to Fife how me dad and mum fitted in the cab the body had to be washed out and dried to bring sacks of tatties back also back home he had j type the driver would stop mam would put my carry cot on the floor for a 2 hour trip to consett iron works to get the house work done
I remember going to the main terminal top parking level just to see the planes land. Then used to go to a service road and watch the planes land. In the old days when the 747s and DC8s were crazy loud.
Now that is a cruise ship, classic lines, not like the floating apartment blocks of today, CANBERRA looked very grand at the start and some others in the background. They had some cracking shore excursions, great video, much enjoyed Chris.
Thank you Dave - as you say a "proper cruise ship". Unfortunately the pandemic caused most of the smaller cruise ships to be scrapped. We did go on the Celebrity Solstice recently - and that size is my limit - although prefer the much smaller ships - such as the one we were on in August to Svalbard!
Wow! Looks like they're still hand loading luggage!
I loved that airport. However, it was just amazing to see how quickly this 'new' airport was overwhelmed with volume. For me, it had that wonderful 'international feel' of airports of that time. I can still smell the aviation kerosene and even the air conditioning. I remember the sensory buttons in the elevators. In the 60's before security, you could go into the ring and at different places for 25c you could go onto an observation deck and see the planes. Pretty fun for a kid who would have sold his liver to be a pilot.
🎉🎉❤❤❤
Better to be silent, but great footage.
I prefer to add either music or on occasions sound effects - rather than leave silent - but at least you were able to switch the sound off.
Very lonely looking landscape virtually void of trees, good collection of freight and passenger working.
I don't think the landscape has changed much either.
The people on that arriving BA flight just got their bags... Gotta love YYZ

Departed during a thunderstorm and hope you arrived at your destination !
Ah the days when British Airways was actually BRITISH!! Not any more, should be called Spanish Airways now since they own it, and all the airports.............in fact lets just call Britain , Spain!
Cinecam footage from the 70s looks slightly out of focus. Has this been restored?
It was a cine film which I digitised then edited.
Watching old footage with lines and flashes of colour cast is a good thing but restorations necessary to keep the memories alive.
@@duncancurtis5108 There is a limit to what I can do with the equipment I use. However - after I have digitised a cine film - I don't throw it away.
