So, I think that the word sacrifice is best understood as the economic concept of opportunity cost. Do you want to be a successful motivational speaker? Well you will need to sacrifice your chance of becoming the world's best Call of Duty player because you won't have time to play. Do you want to be a professional baseball player? You will have to sacrifice your dream of being a profesaional tennis player because you will not have time to do both. Want to be a neurosurgeon? Jesus's sacrifice was to open a way for us to avoid hell - seems to be quite noble. Today, for a Christian, the 'sacrifice' is to care for our neighbor - i.e. not live a life of solitude and selfishness. Does this not lead to a more fulfilled life as well as bettering society? to make it more personal, I sacrifice for my children because I love them. If I'm a follower of Christ, that means I must love my fellow human. If I truly love them, I want to see them succeed. Anything I do for them has a cost - i.e. I'm not doing something for me. I'm not seeing where this is immoral or debilitating
