Do I or Do I Not Like Prog Rock? My Struggles With Understanding Progressive Rock
Progressive Rock like many categories is very broad but what is it really. Is it about concept albums or about weird time signatures or about blending of classical and jazz into rock or just 15 minutes songs with long extended solos. I truly dont know. I look at a variety of albums and try to figure out if I like prog or not.

Chain Reaction Records Store Tour -Lakewood CO- Lots of Metal and Punk but so much more
If you need any advice, just ask me. I am the King of Prog! And Classic Country Music. Basically on everything.
I collected records from 1972 to about 1986 when I started buying CD’s I accumulated about 500 records and I accumulated about 3000 cd’s. I then accumulated about 1000 records from 2020 to now, all were new records. I am almost 69 years old and I know exactly what Steve is going through. Suggestions are welcomed. The records are mostly Rock and Classic Rock and Classic Pop Thank You
Yet you like Bluenote jazz which is basically the same piece of music made by different con artists. Try early Charisma records that is prog. ELP yes etc are just so called musicians showing off. I would say Dark side is less proggy than Tubular bells. Anything with Rick Wakeman in it is pretentious garbage. Try Dragon fly by Strawbs he wants jailing. New World symphony classical music is more prog than that awful cacophony created by Rush. Plus if its American it isn't prog its C& W played loud with an orchestra..
Steve, I like how you have embraced the struggle. If you do decide that you like prog you will have some albums to enjoy. I've always considered the Decemberists as a folk band, but now I will reconsider. Thanks, Chris
As a fan of punk Mike I've also had a hard time with prog. I think some of the early stuff when it had a tinge of psych and rocked a bit harder is good, but then it just got super pretentious real fast with suites instead of songs, bloated instrumentation, time signatures that just sound like people throwing drums down stairs and of course the twee lyrics, so punk just had to happen. I think it's hilarious how many prog records you have Mike considering your struggle 😂All of these albums that you don't like very much could really solve your space problems and who am I gonna leave all of this stuff to when I die anxiety. Get rid of the prog ones now = problem solved. No problem mate. Happy to help out any time. Cheers...Mike
Sorry to burst your bubble but after the demise of so called prog came Glam and Disco. Both were actually silly genres hence pub rock which morphed into punk.
@@60sPsycheFanatic Wow there's some pedantic f@#kers out there.
Either you like it or you don't. I don't think it matters to anyone. I've always favored it to most rock genres. I think a lot of music boils down to two types, some people want music that is more accessible and likeable upon the first listen vs. something that might take four or more listenings to get into it. I've always enjoyed the latter--for one thing, I feel like I'm getting more for my money if it takes a bit longer to get into it ie. like you mentioned Atom Heart Mother. I didn't like it immediatley, but it grew on me. That's one reason I don't care for garage or punk that much. It's two and three chords and there's just not that much there (for me). I'm generalizing here to a certain degree. Since prog came out in the late 60s as an outgrowth of psychedelic music (as well as some other genres) it has gotten broader. Check out the site progarchives if interested in discovering more.
I'm guessing Hideaway isn't a cover of the Dave Dee, Doxy, Mick & Tich song, whish is a shame, as I'd like to hear a dark psych version of that. Glad you like the OoI stuff. Scenes From the Dreams of Angels is my favourite. The Dropkick Murphys are very Pogues influenced, but there aso a bit of The Men They Couldn't Hang in there too. Check out TMTCH's first LP, 'Night of a Thousand Candles'.
All this labeling is pointless. Who cares what it is? If you like it, great. If you don't, move to something else.
Hi, Steve. When you first opened this video, I felt like I was listening to MYSELF! I have pondered the very same question because I have no family members who have an interest in my record collection, albeit smaller than your collection of 3,000, unless you count all of my 45’s! My wife, like yours, has no interest in it, nor do either of my two daughters. I am now 62 and I own a large number of Elvis Presley albums and singles. Those are the ones that are nearest and dearest to me because of all the years building that collection. In about 10 to 12 years, I will probably sell everything, including the Elvis records, on eBay because I have built up a great reputation on there. Until then, I’m just going to enjoy the music!
There is a prog fan within you Steve, struggling to get out. Just breath in and embrace the genre...
Hi Steve, you know I haven't really played too much prog lately then I seen the BEAT concert and pulled out my King Crimson LPs and even did a video on it. But before that haven't played ELP, Gentle Giant or Yes in awhile. The prog I like are the big commercial bands most of the ones you showed. I enjoyed your thoughts and what you think about the music, take care.
Interesting video Steve. Wondered if you are aware of the channel of Andy Edwards in the UK? He has some very interesting videos about prog and its roots and appeal. He also has some interesting theories about the links between prog and punk. I think 'Thick as a Brick' was meant to be a bit of prog pastiche originally, but it ended up leading them up an actual prog avenue themselves on future records. I may try and do a response video at some point. Btw, all the members of ELO are pointing at their bellybuttons on the cover of 'On the Third Day'.
Hi Steve, I have just spent an hour or so listening to Black Doldrums after your recommendation and have somehow just bought their two albums! Nice 4AD package there Steve. Cheers, Paul
The nudie album went by too quick. You’re slipping Steve.
the age old ? what is prog? for me YES,72-76. genesis 70-73. i consider the lamb lies down more art rock. most king crimson prog. though some again art rock even jazz. Speaking of jazz, how about miles Davis " in a silent way " that's close to prog. there are episodes on the SEA of TRANQUILITY channel where they do a thing called "what is it? prog or not "? example STYX, SUPERTRAMP. there are hundreds of examples. good show! cheers.
What I'm doing is getting my grandkids into records buying them a little player now they are 5 and 3 yrs old. I'm leaving to them. They like music and playing records .
Hey Steve This was really interesting to hear your thoughts and opinions... It came as no surprise to me that you struggle with ' prog rock'..given you like a lot of noisy, punky short songs...although to be fair, as it can be such an amalgamation of different styles, there's usually ' something for all' within the genre...and as you like Jazz, there's immediately a crossover there. The Moodies were definitely what I would refer to as ' prog pop' ..and yes, you're right, APP could be referred to as that too and even though their sound is arguably dated, I love some of their music as it's grand and adventurous ...... particularly Justin Haywards' and Mike Pinders' songs..and of course, they're from Birmingham!.( Moodies). You mention Echoes here and I have to concur, that as a single piece, it's probably my favourite side of Pink Floyd..just pure escapism for me whenever it's spun. Jethro Tull..hmm, it sometimes surprises me that you are a fan because we have prog and folk elements going on there..but then again, Ian Anderson is cynical and doesn't take himself too seriously, which I guess was the punk and new wave ethos . By the way, I tried Porcupine Tree and hated it...I think ultimately, it has to be more than just being a great musician..I mean, just because you can, doesn't necessarily mean that you should??.
I really like Close To The Edge by Yes & The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway by Genesis & enjoyed the Trevor Horn Produced Yes comeback in the mid 80's & I like the 80's King Crimson records.
Basically, Steve... If it's something I don't like, I call it "prog." If it's something I like, I call it "art rock." 🤣
😂
Hey Steve. Great video. I love me some prog. You showed a lot of great albums. Cheers
I do like some prog, but not all. Pink Floyd, King Crimson, and certain Genesis records rank highly for me. But, parts of the debut Crimson record leave me cold. I have never really loved ELO or Kansas! 😳
That's totally wrong The First Prog album was not by The Beatles or The Beach Boys. The first Prog album was/most likely/The band The Nice/ Album Everything as nice as Mother made it"..Released in August of 1969/ The Nice featured Keith Emerson& Lee Jackson. The Court of the Crimson King was released months later in the WINTER of 1969.
you can include Miles Davis at times, or classical, ralph von Williams.
I’m just going by the various articles that I read Isa! Didn’t the Beatles and Beadh Boys influence all music lol. Of course I always say Velvet Underground influenced everything.
Wow! You got some expensive prog albums! With the Moody Blues, there’s only poetry on one section of a song. The rest of their songs on the albums has amazing singing and playing. Sit down with “In search of a lost chord” or any of there early albums and really give it a listen. Make yourself a drink, pour some wine, and relax. Prog won’t hurt you. For Genesis, put on “Selling England by the Pound”. It’s a masterpiece! I think the best thing that you can do, is to stop putting music in a box or category. Those bands aren’t getting together and saying “Let’s make a prog album”. You have some brilliant musicians that get thrown into a category or genre. Then, they can’t get out of it. It’s like putting some artist into “Electronic”. Most think of electronic and think European dance beats. They want no part of Electronic. But there’s brilliant musicians that are more prog or space rock or whatever than anything to do with electronic. But because some “Fred” on RUclips says its Electronic or some record shop puts your record on discogs first, then your electronic! You can’t escape that. Please stop labeling music and just enjoy it! Don’t sit down and listen to “Dark Side of the Moon” or any brilliant album and go, well I’m going to listen to prog. Listen to music! It will help, believe me. You’ll find a lot of amazing music without tensing up about what the genre is or what it isn’t. Be free my friend! Stop categorizing music! Don’t let others do it to you as well! You can say “This album reminds me of that album or this album, or this band or artist”. We are into vinyl, we are free from corporate radio stations and such. Put on an album and let it take you away!
@@mlblue5355 you made some excellent points Michael 👍 💯
Michael, I love compartmentalization, it makes me happy. It does come down to sit and spend time with the music. We will never like everything , we have our own personal taste I found this interesting just how music is classified when I use to think about a genre with a more narrow focus. It was fun to pull these various albums and listen to them again. Some I found I liked, others not really, they just didn’t age well for me. Many don’t like the Sex Pistols but I love them, it’s just how we hear things
Cool that you showed Saga. :-) Bernard
Bernard, I figured I should show some new prog which you blessed me with
you have a decent collection and some of the best prog albums ever. not only that but you have the highest quality versions for almost all of them. very nice. There are some genres I dont care too much for like punk/country/jazz where I have a small collection also. thats perfectly fine. you like what you like. concept album/super extended songs are prog features. sometimes its hard to define whats prog but if one those 2 features is usually present then it might be prog. I think if you have a problem with long songs then maybe it could be that you lack a musicianship background? do you play guitar? have you ever tried to play drums or keyboards? where you ever in a band? imo if youre a musician there is more of a chance to understand long instrumental prog songs. Well to be fair if youre a musician then it probably means you love music in general. not just prog I suppose. just because you play music doesnt mean youll like prog. maybe when you played in a band you preferred to play short songs and preferred punk rock/grunge/hard rock/metal? so musicians are not inheritantly going to like prog. Look at Mazzy he is a msucian and doesnt care much for prog either. But for me personally, Just my own experience, my musical background is a big reason prog rock is my fav genre. If I never learned guitar I probably wouldnt be as obsessed with prog as I am.
Very interesting thoughts. I played piano and trumpet but never part of an actual band. I do love classical music, I was raised on that. I can see your points as you listen to what is happening in the solos. I do like jazz especially bop and be bop and Davis is my favorite artist of all times. I love the solos in that music. When it comes to prog I just need to slow down and listen to the music more intently.
Don't worry about it Steve. Prog can be confusing even for those of us who grew up in the UK in the seventies. There are many different sub genre's of Prog and I think just about every album you showed would find a place in one of those genres. A particular favourite of mine is the Canterbury Scene, bands like Caravan and Soft Machine with their jazz influences. And yes you should check out Porcupine Tree. Cheers Mike 👍👍👍
hatfield and the north ,Egg. national health etc...
A few people have mentioned the Canterbury Scene Mike. Like any genre there are so many sub genre spinning around. I will give Porcupine Tree a try
Love your prog collection Steve. Those moody albums are beautiful I’ll have to look for those . King crimson and Yes , Tull, Genesis, Tramp, ELO, Kansas, Asia, great video. Possibly your best ever. Thx for shoutout Steve
lol Art, I figured you would appreciate this video
Prague rock from Czech Rep. RUSH. I never got Moody Blues. Meh
ha! i get it...
lol Henry, well done my friend
Great video Steve. I am a huge prog lover. I get what your saying that even I don't like everything that is prog. If I might make a suggestion is to check out the Canterbury Prog scene. If I might suggest these albums to start off with: Gentle Giant - Self Titled first album Caravan - For Girls Who Grow Plump In The Night Camel - Mirage Hatfield And The North - Rotters Club Khan - Space Shanty Mainstream - Quiet Sun Now Italian Prog (RPI - Rock Progressivo Italiano) took Prog in a whole new direction. Such bands I would recommend you check out is: PFM- Chocolate Kings Banco - Self Titled first album New Trolls - CONCERTO GROSSO PER I As far as new Prog, I was recently introduced to a band called Wobbler. They hail from Finland. Check out any album from them.
I really appreciate you giving me some suggestions. I will give these a listen. To me these are what I consider to be part of this genre. Always good to have know what a good starting place is.
Love the video Steve. You have an extensive collection of so called "prog" . I never labeled it as such when I collected many of the same you've shown. With you being such a fan of punk, garage and psychedelic I didn't think you'd have so much progressive rock. Yes and early Genesis were my go-to in the beginning and I consider PFloyd right up there. an 'attitude adjustment ' to really appreciate 'prog' is helpful 😊. FIFO 🎉
Prog too me was always like Yes, Rick Wakeman, Emerson Lake and Palmer, etc…. When reading and digging into this so many albums are considered prog. Who knew?
I agree with you on understanding prog! I think those who get it would be great explaining it better and help us!
@@primeanalogrecords hi Matt. How are you. I was worried about the hurricane affecting your place. Good to see you.... Well kind of
Matt, how have you been! Wonderful to hear from you! Yeah I have been reading up on it but like any genre there are multiple genres that blend into other genres. It was fun to explore though a lot of it I just don’t think is prog
@@3dimensionsofmusic3D we made it through the hurricane, but I’ve been sidelined by foot surgery! It’s been really rough and I finally got my cast off two days ago, but I’m still having to rehab this foot! It’s been over 2 1/2 months! So hard to be sidelined when you’re such an active person like I am! Tag insult to injury that big beautifulneon sign behind me in my videos died, and I don’t know any recourse because the company went out out of business! When it rains it pours
@@primeanalogrecords I've rehabbed many times from too many surgeries in my time. Luckily we have the music to keep us sane 🙂. Pleased to hear your home is okay 👍.. I loved that sign... hopefully you'll be able to get it fixed. Be well my friend.
I'm loving Black Doldrums. I've never heard of Outskirts of Infinity. I'm not sure how they passed me by; they sound fab. I never knew Divinyls either, but I did pretty much dip out of new music for most of the '80s. Great stuff, as usual, Steve. Cheers
Andy, the Outskirts albums don’t go for a ton of money in the UK. I of course loved the Bevis Frond connection. Black Doldrums have been played quite a bit. Lot of Fuzz Club in the future Andy!
This is something I've not thought about as I'd be gone but I'm trimming down now practically because we have to move house. Record fairs are far more fun to sell at than online. Wherever you sell just be careful not to go browsing otherwise you may well end up with more records. Have a plan. Have a budget. Nice thoughts Steve. Greetings from UK.
Martin, I know I would go browsing and blow my money lol. Seriously that would be fun except for the setting up and taking down of the tables. Is that how you have been bringing down your collection? Moving a collection sucks, at least you’re ahead of the game. Always a pleasure to hear from your
$100. Mystery boxes. One sweet album per with a few others thrown in. Have a list of what is in the collection and it's value. Let the people take a chance at hitting a jackpot.
That’s a pretty cool thought Scott. That could be fun
The bargains on vinyl and cd classical sets are amazing. Classical media seems to have been treated better than rock and pop. Many are practically pristine. This can't last.
Isn’t that the truth on classical. They are always well taken care of. I do love classical and I try to work it in periodically on my Sunday show as there are always great stories surrounding the music.
Mike, you'll be having flood nightmares with those two. I don't think I could do the Dylan box with 900 cd's. I think the condensed album you got is the go. I ordered Nice Biscuit, just one though. Black Doldrums sounds a bit Sisters Of Mercy and that's a good thing to me. Lord Of The Dark Skies I think you should be said with the deepest voice you can conjure. They sound like they could be a Fuzz Club band. Another ripper Mike. I just can't get into Dropkick Murphys. I know I should because I absolutely love the Pogues. That 4AD seems like something I should have. I don't think I'd have the confidence to unfold it on camera though. The early Divinyls stuff is rockin'. Chrissie was a powerhouse. Angus in fishnet stockings?!? That's a lot to unpack Mike. Here's some trivia for you Mike: Charlie Owen played guitar for the Divinyls and would end up in the mighty Beasts Of Bourbon. Texas the home of Butthole Surfers & 13th Floor Elevators were to prudish for Touch Myself 😂Antique stores must literally think that the records are actual antiques. Cheers...Mike
Mike, my turntable has been blasting out a lot of dark music, trying to keep the neighbors away, it seem to be working! Fuzz Club has been a costly thing to get into, lot more coming. Guess I should buy an album or two that is popular with the masses in the US. The 4 AD record was an intelligent test trick, obviously I should go back to school and get trained again on opening an album Mike. It was interesting reading about Chrissy. All my Aussie commenters really had a lot of love and respect for her. Funny how that highly sexual song turned into a breast cancer song, totally makes sense. Election night and a winter storm coming in. Hopefully that is not a bad omen
As long as you are not single and have someone close, then you can be sure that they are there for your music. Besides, you are not going to be around to know or do a thing about your vinyl collection. I have a collection, I have left instructions for it all to be sold eventually, as it is an investment just as jewelry is… There will always be a market for vinyl. What goes around, comes around. Someone will always make something from your personal objects of desire. As I say, we will not be around to enjoy it in the end. If you are clever, make a will. Love your room space and thinking nevertheless.
Rich, great points and thank you for taking the time to comment. We are working on bringing in a lawyer on my podcast, Two Guys Talking About Records to discuss what you just mentioned
Steve, that was a pretty cool opening. It looked like it would be fun. I enjoyed theBlack Doldrums and Diviynls needle drop.
Mark, it has been fun living in a large city and finding cool things like Day of the Dead. We have been lucky to take in a lot of things. I got a phone filled with video. Maybe I just need to start a travel channel lol.
You could always run a raffle on your more expensive albums. If an album is worth $500 then sell 500 tkts at $1 a piece or more reasonably 100 tkts at $5 each or 50 tkts at $10 each.
William, that is a cool thought. I wonder how that would go? Thank you for the idea
you never get rid of records you only add more records to your collection
Paul, a lot of truth in that statement. I have been doing periodic purges but it is not easy. Also makes me wonder why I buy some albums in the first place lol
Again, great show. I have been trying to get that 4AD sampler, one of the best labels. I know you have a lot of music to check, and a lot of gaps to fill after that damn flood, but I would think that you would not be disappointed if you looked into Fields of the Nephilim, a goth rock band that started in the 80's. Their album Dawnrazor would be the perfect start. Anyways, cheers mate, and keep the vids coming
Moses, I checked out the album Dawnrazor. Real cool sound. Cheapest album in the US is $60! I did put it on a want list to see if a cheaper version comes through. Thanks for taking time to give me a recommendation, I really appreciate it. Yeah, that damn flood but it has been fun to rebuild
@stevecarlsonvinylcommunity9147 my pleasure. And thank you for all the recommendations and entertainment
Its your and your life s passion only. Care less about it . Enjoy it to the full, but if your family dont want your vinyl. Sort out a bequest as a will to donate it to a xharity to sell on to help them. Best wishes from Planet Mack channel
Simon, a friend of mine said that a large part of his collection is set up to be a charity donation. I think once I stop working for me son I will thin the herd and narrow down my collection to the albums that I really love and make it more manageable for my family
Travel, Talk, Records....Your show provides the trifecta of the Sunday Morning essentials. We come for the records and stay for the soft porn. Oh and great music, info and samples, what more could a sane vinyl collector (?) want. Love what I hear from Black Doldrums. Dropkick Murphys, every Sunday should have a dose of them. Beautiful sampler there from bruceybaby. Any This Mortal Coil on that collection? Great stuff as always, more stuff for my endless list.
Mike, yes the 4 AD had a Mortal Coil sample. I had it on the broadcast but I went over 30 minutes and believe it or not I try to edit to bring it under 30 minutes lol. I will only waste 30 minutes of your time, not 31! Black Doldrums had a very dark but cool vibe. Check out some of their videos.
as always a great video Steve...like yourself and Andy I'm a Fuzzclub member and was surprised by the double monthly release.. pleasant surprise given that both were hew to me and soo out there. Gonna check out the others!!
Isn’t Fuzz Club a fun label. I have rarely been disappointed with any album I have bought on that label. There are a lot of well established groups that have been putting out albums but little labels like Fuzz Club keeps grabbing all my music. I got a lot more albums from them coming up
HI Steve, - if you are on a psych tear, perhaps check out Little Cloud Records from Portland. Similar style to Fuzz Club. Just got a new LP from them, which I think you might dig - Bloocaccoon - s/t (prnc Blue Coccoon?). A bit Chapterhouse, or Revolver or Adorable from 90s, with a bit more modern style. kinda song-oriented shoegaze. As for labels, also worth checking out Cardinal Fuzz for more out-there stuff. Enjoyed the show as always. cheers
Luke, these smaller labels have so many great artists making fantastic music. I will check this out. I really like where the newer psych and shoegaze music has been going Now let’s see how much of my money you have spent lol
Keep Discogs current. I told my wife, make the record dealer take everthing or nothing. That way she will get paid without having to piece it out. Luckly I don't have thousands of albums. Maybe 500 by the time I die.
Great advice. I do keep discogs up to date. My youngest son already mentioned that I need to make sure they have the password to get into it. Thinking ahead already lol
Some very interesting and alluring records there Steve. I loved the sound of the Black Doldrums. Really my kind of music must said. Didn’t dislike the two psych rock albums either 😊 Be well and take care Steve.
Morten, always looking for something new and different. Black Doldrums is a very good album. Stream it and see that you think. It won’t empty your wallet either
Congrats on the subs. That comp seems fun.
Thanks Jeff, just slowly building it up over the years. I appreciate you watching all these years. You were my first VC meetup way back when
@stevecarlsonvinylcommunity9147 wow... I was the first? Lol Let me know next time you're here and we can hit one of my favorite shops.
Hi Steve - 4AD - The best 👌 label of the 80's. Love Throwing Muses. Divinyls were underrated.
I was not that familiar with 4 AD in the 80s but they had a real cool roster of artist David. You rarely hear anyone speak of the Divinyls. I would grab their earlier albums if I saw them.
Thought provoking video Steve. Another thing I would add to the conversation is the curse of Sellers Remorse! I didnt think it was something to be worried about but it can haunt you at times.
Sellers remorse is as real as buyers remorse. No doubt I would also have that
Who knew there were four Nightmare On Elm Streets.
Well I never saw the other 3 of the movies lol
