It was a very cold night at Current Creek Reservoir in the Uinta National Forest. We camped at 8,200'. It was about the lowest elevation we could find a decent camping spot. When we left camp we traveled into the forest and climbed to over 9,000' very quickly, where snow covered everything and all the roads were very wet from the snow melting. We had a few very rough rocky sections and water crossings. When we hit pavement we went over 2 mountain passes. Bald Mountain, and Hayden Pass. They were 10,700' and 10,400' and very cold. NMBDR Day 1 Dell City NM to Weed NM, New Mexico Backcountry Discovery Route
“Discovered” your channel this morning. Not a rider, used to be many years ago but I let my endorsement slide when I moved south from WA. Living in NM now so this is very relevant. I had to look up “GS” as well as “BDR” as I had no idea… This type of adventure looks like a lot of fun. I’m a landscape photographer and I’ve been thinking on a Jeep to get myself off of the pavement but they’re so expensive. This might be a viable alternative if my 68 year old body would accept riding again. Definitely less expensive than a Jeep… Subscribed as well
Awesome!! The BDRs are totally do able in a jeep. Thanks for checking my channel out. I hope you find some fun stuff to ride, a lot of the COBDR I have done years ago in a jeep. Lots of fun that way too.
Almost every video people have trouble getting up and out of Chloride Canyon, you made it look easy, good job.
Only made it look easy because I passed the turn at the bottom. lol. If it’s still close to the way, it was when I rode instead of trying to take the 90° turn up that angle just go past it, turn around and hit it on straight.
Definitely one of my favorite areas i’ve ever rode.
Slick as hell
Sure was. Nasty stuff to ride in.
@@KJ03Adventurethey say ride fast and stand up when In sand?
@@haroldyazzie3538 That’s what they say. But after falling a lot all the ways they say to ride in sand. We were just trying to keep the wheel side down. lol. Not a lot of sand where I live.
What app were you running for the maps on that phone?
I use “Pocket Earth” on my rides. It has downloadable maps for offline use, as well as tracking capabilities.
@@KJ03Adventure sweet, it did the whole BDR for you?
@@Empowered-ltc Absolutely. I’ve done several with it. I also use a InReach. But not for navigation.
@@KJ03Adventure thank you very much I appreciate this. I’m trying to drum up interest on my channel and a new FB group for adventure riders, not much luck, probably going solo. I want to do the NMBDR early next year. Really enjoying your videos, think I’m on day 4 now.
@@Empowered-ltc Look up “Adventure Rider” it’s a group of adventure riders. They have a forum for each BDR it’s under “Next in the BDR series NMBDR” usually a lot of chatter there.
Love the ride but the music is distracting, IMHO.
Thanks!!
High. Up in the aspens
Sure was. It was an amazing ride for sure!!
Did you pass any small creeks in the Jemez area (last stretch on the way to Cuba) that looked like good fishing? Looking to combine some riding with some fly fishing
I don’t remember any before Cuba. I do remember tons and tons of sand in that area though. I’ll have to go back and see if there were any I forgot on my previous video. Lol
music band?
I honestly couldn’t tell you. At the end credits there is the website I use to get license free music from. Pretty sure they were under rock.
I'm guessing the river wouldn't be that high in mid September. Saw in the comment below it was early June so you were ahead of the monsoons.
Yes we were ahead of the monsoon session but only by a little bit. Most of the water we had was from snow melt.
2:49 My favorite song.......................Thumper, by KLR
O yea it’s a good sound!! I’m a big fan!!
At the end you ask us to give a "thumbs up." Hell, I'm doing that as i start each video. :)
Thank you!! I love watching people’s dual sport adventure videos, making videos, and going on trips like this. I started making them for myself to go back and watch. Figured why not post them someone else may enjoy them too. It sure means a lot and gives me the verification that the hrs spent on my laptop after trips is worth it. Glad you enjoy them!
Have you done the TAT yet? With all those miles on your bike I'm guessing you have
Nope, I haven’t would love to just don’t know quite how to find the time to do it. I bought the bike with a good bit on it but love riding so have put a lot on it also. If your on Instagram I’m also there same name don’t post tons but I do post more there than trip videos here.
I grew up in the Mojave Desert in Southern California, and that does look like home. Darn KLR's and their naps. ;)
I’ve noticed mine and my dads KlR’s are always sleepy, almost epileptic. 😂
Amazing ride, amazing camera work and amazing country guys! what time of year was it?
Sorry I seem to have missed your comment somehow. It was the last couple days of June and first of July.
DEFINITELY not a ride you want to do alone! That was spooky seeing that KLR roll over like that. These videos are outstanding!
Was real hard in that area to tell what was hard pack and what was a ft deep. I’ve gone down enough that I’m pretty good at it. lol. Just don’t go any faster than you want to crash is what I’ve always been told.
Riding with luggage other than a passenger is new to me and I'm sure it doesn't help. Sand............hop of the throttle and yer down. Awesome adventure guys, stay safe!
We like to camp as we go on these trips. Makes it more of an adventure. The luggage definitely makes it challenging. Between tent, sleeping bags, MRE’s, ext. adds a good bit of weight. It’s not to bad but dose makes the pig a little heavier. Lol
Definitely something you don't want to do alone. Also something best done without an audience of four wheeler's................but the water makes up for it. ;) Still on my bucket list, but it may be the last thing i do before the bucket.
lol. Some of this one made me think it would end my bucket list. Yea I love when we get an audience on the hardest part but the water definitely made up for it.
Now THAT is going on my bucket list, New subscriber for sure. @KLR_on65
Awesome!! Thanks!! Yea the UTBDR was amazing. Lockhart was was brutal but there is a easier bypass if needed. I wish you the best and safe ridding!!
Great footage!
Thank you!!
Need to find me trails like this, I've just been running the riverbed here in Phoenix
Check out the AZBDR. I have not had the opportunity to ride this one, but all the other BDR’s are amazing.
Ride on
Always!!
Just found your videos and i love 'em. We are planning on running UTBDR and AZBDR (north -south) in October. We'll be in full-size 4x4 rigs. Did you see anything that would be too challenging for a full-size truck?
Thank you very much for your interest and support. I enjoy ridding and making the videos, I’m glad you enjoyed them. I have not completed the AZBDR as of this time. But as for the UTBDR everything should be doable. Lockhart is a challenge in itself, even for UTV’s modified Jeep’s and motorcycles. I’m not sure how easy it would be for a full sized truck. I believe doable for a rigged out Jeep or old style full size Bronco. If you try I would not recommend it without a SPOT, or InReach of some kind and winches. Best of luck and safe travels.
Really cool video!! Looks like an awesome ride. Any advice ? Ive got an Africa Twin that I plan on taking up there. Also, good riding buddy
Lockhart is the only part that I had trouble. Take more water thank you may need. Take a SPOT or Garmin. Just take it slow and help each other. It is brutal especially for bigger bikes.
This would be a very boring watch to many people.....except those who plan to ride the NMBDR of course. A little less music and some commentary would be great, to get that insight on the ride. Really appreciate you taking the time to post this though, and can't wait to get my GS next year and start tackling each of these sections as well.
I love riding, and making the videos but hate talking on film. Lol. If you need anything or have any questions let me know. This is probably my favorite ride so far there almost no service through this ride make sure you have a spot or inReach. There is one expert section if you haven’t road your GS much I would recommend skipping the section. If you ride a good bit it’s not the worst, just a good bit of down hill bigger loose rock.
@@KJ03Adventure I'm sure it would take away from your focus and enjoyment of the ride too, if you felt like you had to come up with something to say all the time. Your videos are truly valuable, don't get me wrong, it's just that there's the potential to be even more valuable with some personal insights along the way. Great point with the Spot GPS tracker!!
@@jimsnider3971 The GPS /SOS device is the only way I could communicate with anyone except the couple times you go through a town. I did camp the every night on this BDR except one night in Cuba NM. Lots of amazing views and beautiful riding. Just be ready for sand around the missile range and Grants and past Cuba. I watch lots of videos before I ride a trip like this. Also try to capture what others don’t most of the time I just try to fit what I find fun or cool in to reasonable time spot without being 2 hrs long.
Thank you for the ride. I no longer ride motorcycles but I do like driving. This road looks like it would be drivable by something like a Jeep or small pickup truck. Might be a bit rough for a rental hatchback. It would not be problem for our old Subaru Outback but that car lives in NH.
Yes, I don’t remember anything that couldn’t be done on a Jeep. The BDR’s are mostly all Jeep trails, fire roads, and such. I’ve done 3 BDR’s and all were possible on a standard Jeep except the Lockhart Basin section in Utah. It would be better in a side by side or modified Jeep type.
my grandparents had a cabin on the other side of the hill from Weed. If you look down the one road in weed with the Post office on your right, the hill straight ahead (at the intersection), I went there every summer from the mid 80's to early 90's Ive eaten in that Post office numerous times.
That’s awesome. We camped at the Community Center behind the Baptist Church right across from the Post office. Came in kinda late and left pretty early didn’t eat in town but the few people we talked to were supper nice. It’s a pretty neat little area.
Finally a video series that shows the whole route, thanks! My wife and I want to do this but weren’t quite sure how many days to allot for getting it done. Did you ride to the put it at Dell? If so, how far was your ride to get to the start?
We road about 30miles or so. Me and my dad ride so my mother and daughter site see through out the state wile we ride and pick us up close to the end. If your looking for somewhere to park “Two wheel Texan” and Adventure Rider have some good forums for the BDR’s that could help with where to park a truck and trailer for the duration of a ride.
This one is a great ride. Probably my favorite so far that I’ve done. Definitely have a Spot or InReach there is very little service anywhere.
That's really cool! Was this the snowstorm that hit northern Ut right after Labor Day? I was in the area at Soldiers Summit ready to head east to the UTBDR when I heard it was supposed to snow a fair bit and decided to head to Payson and get a hotel room! Checked the weather report and headed back south, bailed on the UTBDR but still had a great time. advrider.com/f/threads/ut-co-bdr-in-sept-what-could-possibly-go-wrong.1467892/
Awesome!! It definitely caught us off guard. Glad you had a great trip!
Nice thread definitely some familiar locations. Glad y’all had a safe trip!
This was about June the 18th-19th
Ouch...that ditch must have left bruises. Cool trail system and great views! Thanks for sharing
Lol. Actually pretty lucky, just a little sore that evening. Thanks
I love riding in Utah! Looks fun except for the ditch tip-over. Ouch! I like the tunes in this episode too. Keep em coming!
AzMtnThumper Its amazing country. I do promise we know how to ride some of my videos make it look like we don’t. Lol You ride enough in rough enough country it’s going it happen. Thanks for the compliment about the music it’s impossible to find decent free music. So I have started using a service with a monthly fee to have some decent music. Im glad it’s appreciated. I have one more for this group coming then it may be a bit. I’m about to start the 685 rebuild on my bike.
not sure i wanna tackle this one solo. how far between fuel stops? did you carry extra fuel ?
SupRBee ADV We did not have to carry fuel. The most we had on a tank was 160-180 maybe. Not much trouble. This one we both dropped or went down numerous times. I would definitely not do this section solo. It would be best on a empty dirt bike. Lol.
@@KJ03Adventure have we actually met ? i think we have or at least know a lot of the same people. i used to live in Austin but now live in Terlingua.
@@KJ03Adventure also, are these KLRs bone stock ? no 685 upgrade or did you swap out sprockets ?
SupRBee ADV I’m not sure if we have or not me and my father have been to the TWT ride in Bend a few times. If you have ever went to the dinner we may have in passing.
SupRBee ADV It has exhaust and 10c mod is about all. I ran a 14 on this trip. It’s actually the first time I’ve ran anything under a 16 tooth. I just started my 685, and KLX carb kit. We do have upgraded suspension on the front, and my dad has a fork brace. Lol. Pretty stock. I have about 75k and he has about 14k on his.
Sweet, you keeping track of how many bike naps happen ? noticed a mirror missing also.
The mirror was from when he went into the ditch. We don’t really count. I think we may have dropped 1-2 appease that day. In the sand and the large ditch.
That's a tough trail on a KLR. Good job getting through it.
AzMtnThumper Thanks, it was pretty rough especially loaded. It would have been a lot easier if I would have been empty. But that’s part of the fun.
Great series of videos. Thanks for sharing the ride with us. 👍🏼
Dennis McKim Thank you for watching!! Glad you enjoyed it.
Well made video! I love the drone shot of the switchbacks! Really nice!
Craig Christiansen Thank you very much!!
Thinking of doing the NMBDR solo on an Africa Twin... I have done the COBDR (not solo).... Are there any sections on the NMBDR as hard as Ophir Pass on the COBDR?
DansADV The expert section after Chloride Canyon is pretty rocky but nothing like Ophir. The only real hard part for me was the sand from Grants to Abiquiu. That section was pretty long, there was a some that you could tell would be deep but had some rain that set it up. I have a video that shows what I’m talking about, if you haven’t seen it. Make sure you have you a Spot or InReach, there is very very little reception anywhere. If Colorado wasn’t to bad for you shouldn’t have any trouble that I can remember. The UTBDR I would not suggest doing solo.
How deep was the sand sections?
This section didn't really have any sand. Just lose rock on it. The day 6 Grants to Abiquiu was the real sand. It was from 1-8" best guess. Also was like Moon Dust super fine.
Wow, great drone footage of Moki Dugway! I made two trips up into that area last year, great riding.
AzMtnThumper Sure is. It turned out better than I expected. Sadly I was only able to use the drone on that part of the trip. The wind never cooperated the rest of the trip. Very good ridding in the area for sure.
If possible. At the beginning of each video, It would be nice to show a US map of the projected days ride.
That is a great idea. Thanks I’ll see what I can do on my next videos. I just finished the UTBDR so hopefully some new videos to come.
One day I want to take my truck and explore some of those places.
David Gross there are a lot of really good roads there.
@@KJ03Adventure yes. Your videos are great.
David Gross Thank you very much!!
The music is so repetitive becomes annoying pretty quick.
Hi there I agree but it’s pretty hard to find music RUclips will let you use without pulling videos down. I hope you can enjoy them muted. Lol
Overloaded and underpowered...I see it all the time out here. Home, Frisco, CO. KTM690 Enduro R is my weapon of choice after a KLR, 1200 Tiger and 800 Tiger.
Mark Jacobs Makes it fun. Lol. We had a DR that was pretty much empty with us that had a lot of same trouble we did. Those are great bike choices, but I can work on my KLR that’s one of the best things about them.
@@KJ03Adventure I ran my 2008 KLR for 25,000+ miles. OK at everything, great at nothing. 1200 Tiger did mostly road work and thought the 800 Tiger was going to be the one...nope, same weight as KLR with way more power. 690 is 300lbs and 70hp. Both help up here because I ride alone mostly and have nobody to help pick up...and the power is needed to keep momentum on trails like Ophir or Mosquito.
Mark Jacobs I have a little over 76,000 on my 08. It’s the black one that went down in the mud. I’m hoping to do a 705 kit before to long. From everyone I’ve talked to and everything I’ve read I think it will really help in the power department. You are completely right though it’s not great at Highway it off road. But it’s not a Cruiser or a dirt bike. Lol. But in my opinion it’s my favorite for a week or so trip where I am going to have both. I’m planning to ride the UTBDR in May and the AZBDR in September.
too heavy bikes. oinkers
Yes sir. Lol. Would be nicer on a smaller bike but the highway portions Suck on one. It’s nice to be able to camp along the way, and the bikes did great. I did the COBDR in 2018, and will be doing the UTBDR and AZBDR in 2020
@@KJ03Adventure I had a R1100rt but sold that and got a 650 vstrom. Even that is too heavy. Speed on those boxer 1200s is amazing. My 1100 couldn't stay with one.
Tom Owens I like the vstroms there good bikes. Not sure they have the suspension a KLR dose for the NMBDR or COBDR expert sections but they are definitely a bit more comfortable on the highway than a KLR. I find a KLR is about the best middle ground. For doing both, have took the KLR in places that I never thought it would and has been a great bike.
Were you using the map from Touratech?
Roger Clark we used the gps tracks from ridebdr.com/nmbdr/ And the paper map from Butler Maps. www.butlermaps.com/motorcycle-road-maps/new-mexico-backcountry-discovery-route-map/?v=7516fd43adaa

Roger Clark That’s great. This one is my favorite so far. I plan to do Utah, and Arizona this next spring and fall. I wish you the best, and safe ridding.
Did this follow the yellow GPX tracks from the NMBDR, or could you share the exact route?
killintime71 Yes this was the standard route. I did not take the expert out of Abiquiu. But we did Chloride, and the rocky expert section from T or C to Reserve.
So is this the same as the gps Kevin Continental Divide trail?
Hi Great roads ! Do u have tracks? I ll be there next month.
Ricardo Sebastián You can download tracks on the BDR’s website. This one was COBDR. ridebdr.com/COBDR
KJ03 ok. You did all the COBDR? I just have 10 days ( last 2 weeks of May) I m Argentina and rented a bike in Boulder , CO. Don’t know what to from there Thank you!
Nice ride! What tires were you using?
Anthony Ketcham we ride with Shinko 804 & 805’s
Did you have any bear spray or protection ?
Double x I did not carry any bear spray. We do carry everywhere we ride but never even saw anything.
Thanks
How did you deal with that closure?
I don’t remember having a closure on that section. What time on the video or part are you referring to?
I have been studying your videos and have decided to venture out to the NMBDR next year, probably solo. Did you camp, or motel? I haven’t noticed either in your videos. I have videos on my channel setting up a new klr650 for it. Thank you
Now I see a camp at the very end
Planning 2019 COBDR ride with my son. This is the first video I have seen of yours. Did you camp any or make hotel reservations? My son is 17 now, we did the east side of the TAT this past June when he was 16.
BSatt We camped and stayed in a hotel one night too. We didn’t make reservations just found one, the one night we didn’t feel like camping. I am planing on finishing the other 2-3 videos for the COBDR soon just been busy. The only real bad area this year was Ophir. It was very loose this year and hard for bigger bikes. It is a great ride and if you go during a rainy time of year be conscious of the area outside Cortez it can be very muddy and boggy.
Plan on middle of July or later this year. SW CO has been dumped with snow and unlikely the high passes in the San Juan's will melt out much before late June/July 4th!!!! As KJ03 mentions also, beware the mud between Cortez and Telluride. Also, Ophir Pass is always tough, if skills not up for it, easy enough to go over Last Dollar Rd, into Ridgway and up to Ouray and re-connect with BDR. Other note - check on completion of road work on Cottonwood Pass and be prepared for recommended detour if not complete. Supposed to be complete this year, but was also supposed to be complete last year........ Another place that is impassible when wet is between Hagerman Pass and Gypsum. Seriously, impassible, so pay attention to weather reports. Have a blast!!!! ColoRADo is awesome and best way to see it in on a moto!!
@@frontderangeddualsport8305 How much of this excluding Ophir would be doable in a Ford F250 4x4 with small truck camper (Capri) in September? I did the NMBDR on a KLR last October by myself but this year going through Colorado with my wife and truck. Thanks!
@@marcuslarson5110 Hey Marcus - kind of depends on whether the F250 is pure stock, long or short bed, and your comfort level with some exposure. The vast majority of COBDR would be totally doable in a F250, but a couple of spots would be either too technical/rocky (like Ophir Pass) or really (seriously narrow - like the section heading north from Radium {where you would cross the CO River}). Here would be the potentially 'difficult' spots in a full sized truck (south to north) - area between Dolores and Groundhog Reservoir (really narrow roads in the woods) - detour straight to Groundhog to avoid - Ophir Pass - take Last Dollar Road north out of Telluride, over to Ridgway and Ouray - Corkscrew Pass (a few super tight hairpins would result in about a 58 point turn!) - could drop into Silverton, and head up through Gladstone to get back on track - however, Hurricane Pass is really steep and loose, plenty wide, just really steep, so solid off-road tires required. Therefore, to bypass Corkscrew and Hurrican would involve going through Silverton and up through Eureka and Animas Forks (missing out on Corkscrew, Hurricane and California passes). - some of the 4 mile area just east of Buena Vista is pretty narrow, but light brush so totally passable if you mind a few scratches in the paint. - water crossing to west of Hageman can be pretty deep depending on recent rains. Keep an eye on the weather, as if that is too deep to cross, then the "Impassible when wet" stretch of road from Thomasville to Gypsum would likely be exactly that. When that stretch is wet, it truly is almost impassible - total pig slop - some narrow stretches on section just north of Gypsum, so beware the paint - same for stretches north of Radium, heading up towards Gore Pass. Pretty much everything I can remember from there north to Wyoming should not be a problem at all. None of this is to say it is not doable, but just know it will not be easy and might get a bit spicy at times. Have a great trip. Keep smiling!!!
@@frontderangeddualsport8305 Thanks Stephan. It is a stock 2019 F250 short bed with all terrain tires. We will be at Great Sands NP September 13 and plan on doing the Medano Pass road to disperse camp & hike then use some of the BDR to work our way north then go over to Rocky Mt NP. I will avoid the tricky areas as you suggested and watch the weather. After riding the NMBDR last fall on the KLR I saw how most could be done in the truck and thought it would be a nice option to truck camp if the KLR was not an option. Without another support vehicle and with the wife, I'll be conservative but the truck- camper does well off road but low limbs can be a problem with the camper. I always carry a chainsaw, tow straps etc.. when in the back country. Cheers!
