Retired 10 years ago as an O4 after 20 years in the regular Army and 7 in the National Guard. The pension was ~$40k a month back then - 2/3s of the average US income. Still sufficient with my investments to _retire_ retire. No corporate or government follow on nonsense jobs. No more bosses at all! Inflation ate a chunk of it despite periodic raises. However, instead of a 4% withdrawal rate on my portfolio I took out only 1%-2%. So that portfolio tripped. Don’t tell any politicians but at the going rate in 10 years I won’t even need a pension. It blows my mind that in my lifetime a military pension went from being a joke to one of the most enviable in the nation. In my childhood (1970s) military pay hadn’t been adjusted for inflation for so long 50% of nearly nothing was nothing.

First of all, how does one serve 20 years & retire an officer, at age 40? When did that person get a college degree to qualify for a commission? Also, one reason that a military pension is worth so much, is because a person would collect it for twice as long as usual, i.e. 40 to 85 as opposed to 65 to 85! Lastly, think of how much overtime pay you lost in those 20 years?

I wouldn’t be so much worried about the overtime, never was. Always had a side hustle and business outside the military. My overtime is made up from the retirement pay at age 40-65.

I retired in 2017 after 24 years. I didnt need to work from a lifestyle or financial perspective however one thing I quickly realized is all of my friends are still working so my days were pretty boring. If you dont hobby or have other retired friends to do stuff with you need to figure out how to fill your time. If you dont want to work, do some volunteering. A year after retiring I ended up using my Post 9/11 GI Bill, got a bachelors, got a job offer I couldnt say no to, now in last semester of my masters while I fight the VA to pay me my MGIB. All depends on your situation but with retirement check, va comp, and gi bill housing allowance, I was making more than on active duty. Keep in mind if you start career 2, taxes are going to kill you!

President Trump is doing what every other president should’ve done but lacked either the courage, integrity, or fortitude to do. Yes, pain will come but, as were taught in the Marine Corps, pain is weakness leaving the body.
