The Green Logbook

I'm Vic. A Retired U.S. Marine. Father. Husband. Reader. Storyteller. Veteran Advocate.
This channel is my online journal documenting my life in the Military after departing the U.S. Marine Corps after two decades of service, retiring as a Chief Warrant Officer 3. I cover success after military life, finding my next purpose, thoughts, ideas, and stuff veterans should know.
Why did I name it "The Green Logbook"?
While in the Marines I was assigned a green notebook for daily tasks. I chose to keep all my logbooks throughout my career, creating a small library of journals outlining my entire career, from E-2 to CWO3.

VETERANS BEWARE! They want $17k to file a VA Claim!
Retired 10 years ago as an O4 after 20 years in the regular Army and 7 in the National Guard. The pension was ~$40k a month back then - 2/3s of the average US income. Still sufficient with my investments to _retire_ retire. No corporate or government follow on nonsense jobs. No more bosses at all! Inflation ate a chunk of it despite periodic raises. However, instead of a 4% withdrawal rate on my portfolio I took out only 1%-2%. So that portfolio tripped. Don’t tell any politicians but at the going rate in 10 years I won’t even need a pension. It blows my mind that in my lifetime a military pension went from being a joke to one of the most enviable in the nation. In my childhood (1970s) military pay hadn’t been adjusted for inflation for so long 50% of nearly nothing was nothing.
First of all, how does one serve 20 years & retire an officer, at age 40? When did that person get a college degree to qualify for a commission? Also, one reason that a military pension is worth so much, is because a person would collect it for twice as long as usual, i.e. 40 to 85 as opposed to 65 to 85! Lastly, think of how much overtime pay you lost in those 20 years?
@@rongendron8705 Me. I retired as an officer, who joined at 20…as enlisted, and retired at 40, as an officer. Got my college degree halfway through. I wouldn’t be so much worried about the overtime, never was. Always had a side hustle and business outside the military. My overtime is made up from the retirement pay at age 40-65.
Don't forget those zay deductions!
Do you really think tarrifs are going to lower costs? Fuck no.its just gonna gice room for the mega rich here to raise their praises along with the tarriffed prices hahaha
My goal and plan is enter around 19 do 20 years of service but do 16 as infantry in the army to rank up and the last four years as a MP to get experience for retirement at 38-39 and hopefully enter the border patrol and complete another career there but after my first four year contract get married to my girlfriend 🙏 after she gets her nursing career and both work for a stabel financial life.🙏 Thats my plan
So sorry for your loss.........dogs are just the BEST.

Retired after 20 yrs 74-94 USAF, and yes for me it was worth it. But now I don't know.
Thanks for your comment. I'm curious why you think its may not be worth it now.
I retired in 2017 after 24 years. I didnt need to work from a lifestyle or financial perspective however one thing I quickly realized is all of my friends are still working so my days were pretty boring. If you dont hobby or have other retired friends to do stuff with you need to figure out how to fill your time. If you dont want to work, do some volunteering. A year after retiring I ended up using my Post 9/11 GI Bill, got a bachelors, got a job offer I couldnt say no to, now in last semester of my masters while I fight the VA to pay me my MGIB. All depends on your situation but with retirement check, va comp, and gi bill housing allowance, I was making more than on active duty. Keep in mind if you start career 2, taxes are going to kill you!
thanks for sharing your experience. That white space with nothing going in is no bueno, learned it the hard way myself. glad you found your path and now getting your Masters.
It's will cost consumers, that's fact.Im not really a fan of attacking allies either

How come the marines has never had a black or Hispanic commandant?
@@MWST-ou3pz No idea, might have something to do with how many Black or Hispanic 4-star Generals there are or have been. In 2022 Michael Langley became the first Black 4-star General in the Marine Corps, there have been no Hispanic 4-star Generals in the USMC to my knowledge, however there have been many Black and Hispanic Sergeant Major of the Marine Corps.
You must be goung through the San Diego Regional Office.
Not a battery, but it’s already over with Mexico. Trump got it what he wanted Mexican soldiers 15 k on the border.
What happened in the last 4 years has already placed most Americans in a horrible situation. If this country does not fight for its citizens then what’s the point of our government? President Trump is doing what every other president should’ve done but lacked either the courage, integrity, or fortitude to do. Yes, pain will come but, as were taught in the Marine Corps, pain is weakness leaving the body. Applying this principle to the entire country as the body, imagine how much STRONGER our nation will be when this is done and all those that have gotten fat while this country starved pays for that disrespect. DJT….America 1st!
how do you not understand what he is doing? That's going to encourage people to buy American. It will cost more on imported products but give Americans jobs and improve our security by needing imports less. we are in a hole and need to stop digging first.
Good insight. Never mentioned I didn’t understand the end result, just how do you think it will affect you in the coming months.
@@thegreenlogbook These countries are so scared of losing American dollars most will fold immediately. He may not even need to do it but if he does it will really only affect people buying luxuries. I understand buying sparkling white wine instead of champaign might hurt your palette, but imagine if Kamala had won. He has been in office two weeks. how fast must he fix things?
We will be in such a good position ina year. We won’t be paying those tariffs, what will happen is all of those business will go under or be forced to renegotiate a better deal for themselves. If I’m buying Canadian products I should pay a higher price. What I should be doing is buying the American made products instead for 2x cheaper.
I agree, I’d rather buy American, without paying those huge “Made in America” prices that currently exist. What I’m seeing is that you’re good with paying more now (or coming months/years), for potentially better prices in the future.
Retiring next month after 22 years with E7 pay. Great video man!
@@douglasriche78 I appreciate it, thanks for watching and congrats on your upcoming retirement. You going to stream your retirement ceremony?
When I enlisted, my intention was not to serve for as long as I did. It simply turned out that way. However, yes, it was the best decision of my life to date, which is paying off now later in life. Thank you for sharing your perspective.
Same. My intent was always 4 years and hen college. Something kept pulling me back. I saw the bigger picture for my life after a while. Best decision.
I'm approaching 23 years of service; the military has been the best decision I've made in my life. If my body holds out and my family still enjoys the lifestyle, I'm looking at retirement in the next 3-6 years.
Thats awesome! Congratulations. Definitely the best decision I've ever made for my family and me. It's afforded us a great life after my retirement and I'm sure it will do the same for you and your family as well.

Yes it is simple answer 🤷
Does a contract extension qualifies as a second period of service? I did a 48mo extension when I got orders overseas but never re-enlisted.
I don't think it does. it's an extension of the first contract. BTW, 48 months is a hell of an extension! why didn't you opt to reenlist instead?
@thegreenlogbook I did an extension just because I wanted to stay as a first term airman, in case I decided to switch career fields and retrain to a different job in the future. It is very difficult to change jobs for a career airman
@ understood, but from what I gather, an extension is not a re-enlistment. Suggest you check out the language on the new release to see if it applies to you.

Sir, thank you for this video. Retired GySgt USMC, this is probably the best video on RUclips as it relates to military retirees and current members for their planning. Compound retirement with VA and retirement can be very financially rewarding.

You can thank me as I contribute to your retirement by paying 35% income tax every year and have no say where my tax dollars go to ….Talk about BS…I have to wait until 66 years to get money “I” contributed to Social Security…how about retired Vets give 35% of their money to Vietnam Vets who don’t reap this windfall that 20 year vets get…total BS if you ask me
Good insight. Regarding Vietnam vets, do you mean Vietnam Vets who retired from military service after a 20+ year career, or Vietnam Vets in general?
@@thegreenlogbook Vietnam vets who didn’t have a 20 year career but still suffer from PTSD…
@@BIGTEX888-hh9ot Curious if you know that they rate VA disability services/payment as well? Many are sitting at the VA alongside other vets daily. PTSD is no small issue, which is why veterans make channels like these to spread the word on the pros/cons of military service. Additionally, I'd like to give you my sincere thanks for your concern for our veterans. It really does show that Americans out there give a damn.
@ and usually it’s around 30% at most for most vets

I am a 100% P & T with SMC S, 21 year disabled veteran. Years ago, while flying around the world, I often enjoyed using the USO. The policy changed, and I was denied entry. It seems that instead of giving millions of dollars to Ukraine, Isreal, funding some 800 military bases around the world, and foreign aid. Funds could be provided to the USO, for the benefit of active duty.......and all veterans! The national mentality is currently, if you are a veteran, you served your purpose, now go away!
Thanks for your input on this. with 21 years, are you retired? if so, it looks like the USO is open for retirees.
I never knew that I retired 3 years ago.
I didn't either. Rudy is a wealth of information.
My husband is retiring this year, we are worried. Working with transition assistance and doing a BDD claim but he's mostly worried about work. And what if you do not have those disability benefits?
@@JosephTSALA Don’t add them to the calculation. VA disability is not an automatic like retirement pay after 20 years. It all depends on your percentage rating. Some rate 0% while others rate 100% and each has a dollar amount attached to it
Good job!
