Welcome to Durasnare's Channel and All Things Crab!
Durasnare was founded because we believe that everyone who wants to try crabbing or already crab, have the ability to do so with the best possible equipment. Through the years, we've seen many variations of crab snares and many lacked the craftsmanship and quality that we wanted in a crab snare. Many of the crab snare loops would mangle up, be loose and flimsy, resulting in lost crab as you would reel in. The crab cages would get bent or damaged from crabs pinching the cage. In addition, we found that many snares lacked the proper amount of weight which kept the snare down on the bottom during turbulent waters. With Durasnare, we address all the problems that we found in a crab snare to ensure that you are able to maximize your chances of catching crab! In addition, we prioritize creating informational videos to give you the best chance of catching crab.

Best crab snares!
Amazing how you can catch so many at once! 👏
POOR CRITTERS
Sketchy place to throw a snare 😅
Surprisingly, it seems to be all sand out there. Just rock beds along the shore. Didn’t snag or hit any rocks which was really fortunate.
Why is the water not brown ?? The last few weeks has been chocolate something is wrong ? It's been raining 😅I live here 🤧
This was filmed October 21, 2024
😂that makes sense 😅😅
Just a suggestion, put in your description the weight of the snare you're using. I know I'd be interested, especially being new to crab snaring, just a thouht. I enjoyed watching your video. Keep up the great work. Thanks for all the info.
This is a great suggestion! We are fairly new at RUclips so this is great feedback so we can really optimize our viewer experience. Thank you so much for watching!
Great day of crabbing and nice demo of your product and technique.
Thank you for watching!
Lets see you put out a pot to compare catch. Getting 1 or 2 that 'might' be legal compared to several (5-10) per pot isnt very productive at all. Not to mention the constant wear on your shoulders casting and reeling over and over again.
It's not how many it's about the fun😂
I'm glad you brought this up because for the sake of argument, we can really dive deep in answering the pro's and con's of both. I have saved this response from a previous comment that someone left so this would be fitting. These are comparisons with snares and ring nets and pots used from shore (not from boat). Biggest advantages will have an asterisk. Not everyone will agree, but this is based on our experience and how we’ve used both to compare over the twenty years of crabbing. Also, we are not casting a mile away with our snares. We are merely lobbing it out which barely takes any effort. Pro’s of CRAB SNARES: -Light weight -Requires minimal storage -Minimal Bait required -* It offers distance coverage advantages from being able to cast much further -* Versatile and allows you to crab from virtually anywhere. Beach, jetties, cliffs, docks, piers, boats, practically anywhere you can cast from. Opens the opportunity up where you can crab from any geographical location. -*Accessible for shore based crabbers and people who don’t have boats -A lot more interactive and fun. It’s like fishing for crab. -Much higher catch rate of legal or larger sized crabs vs nets from docks. You are casting beyond everyone else. Cons of CRAB SNARES: -Will require a rod, reel, line and terminal for optimal performance. You could also use a handline but won’t be as effective as operated with a rod and reel. -Requires a more difficult learning curve compared to rings or traps. You need to practice reeling in at a steady pace to keep consistent tension on the snare at all times. There’s a cadence to reeling in and you’ll get a feel for it once you start. If you stop reeling or don’t keep the tension on, the crab can fall off -Proper storage is required. Throwing snares in a bucket, tackle box, buried underneath other objects can damage the snare and the integrity of the loops. They require more maintenance such as re-condition the loops once they have been worn out by using hot water to make them springy again. -Can be more difficult for younger children or smaller framed individuals to crab snare due to the gear required to crab snare. Snares can get very heavy when you get multiple crabs on or get seaweed caught on the snare. It requires a lot of upper body strength to reel and hold the rod in a 45 degree angle and reel with a lot of weight at the end of the line. -Opportunity to lose a snare is higher because more things can potentially fail. Improper line, frays, weak snap swivel, wrapped rod tip while casting, the bail of the reel closing while casting. -Can lose crab because of improper reeling in technique -Cannot soak for long periods of time Pro’s of CRAB NETS: -* Everything within the net’s radius will get caught -Easier learning curve. You can drop it straight down off a dock or pier. Tossing is not required. Children can even drop a net down. -Easier maintenance. Rinse with water after use. -Can rent and accessible for those who don’t own one. Cons of CRAB NETS: -Flat ring nets cannot be left for long durations. Crab can walk in and out of the crab net. Unless you get the ambush nets, which can sit a bit longer, crab nets aren't meant to be soaked for long durations. -Limited on areas where you can use it -Requires more bait -Capped on throwing distance -Cannot reach the deeper areas where crab area ie. the channels, past the breakers when crabbing the beach, risky to use off the jetty where there are rocks underwater. -Requires bigger storage space -Attracts sealions. They tend to follow the rope down towards your nets. -Can get caught in pilings, piers, rocks Pro’s of CRAB POTS: - * Set it and forget it type of model. Can leave in the water for long periods of time without having to worry about bait. -Easy to do even if you never crabbed before -* Once the crabs get in, they aren’t coming out Con’s of CRAB POTS: -Typically very heavy and even heavier when it’s loaded -Highest cost out of all three devices. Accounting for line, harness, bait box. -Requires more storage -Requires more bait -Capped on throwing distance -Typically used for boats which has a pulley to reduce the heavy lifting and save your back -Limited on dropping distance and location of where you can use from shore -Attracts sealions
@@pamstrait4432 Right? If we chose to just go for crab without any consideration of time or money or care for the sport, people would go drop pots off a boat.
I love this place, I used to camp there back in the early 60s with my grandparents, now I have camped there several times as an adult
It's an amazing place to crab and set up campsites at. Who else could crab right from their campsite?

Where do you manufacture the product?
We source manufactured parts made the USA. We then ship components and parts overseas for assembly. We couldn't compromise the quality of our parts so we it was non-negotiable to have our parts that we sourced personally and tested the quality.
@Durasnare thank you for the response. I'm glad to hear the components are American made, but it's unfortunate we rely on overseas labor to make our products. I understand. In my line of work the only economical option is to send the materials (decorative stone) overseas to be worked. I'll grab a couple of your snares next time I make it to the coast
@@SamSeth Totally agree. We are as transparent as possible and we want to maintain that trust between our supporters. We don't take short cuts on our quality and since the launch of Durasnare, we have only improved components, not decrease. We also never raised the pricing despite the increase cost of parts. We initially started 20 years ago making these out of the garage as a hobby for personal use. But once we became outgrew with demand, there wasn't a way meet demand with us assembling these one by one. We back our products from manufacture defects and have always offered replacements if there ever was an issue. Thank you Sam for the support and your sharing your experience as well.

@@Durasnare Thank you :)
How do you feel it when it's on?
Typically you reel in or check every 3-5 minutes. There is a way to check for crabs by lifting the rod up slightly towards your chest and feel for heavy weight other than the snare. If it's heavy and doesn't want to budge, likely it's a crab on.

Which one determines how far you cast? The reel, rod, force, or all of it together? I want to be able to cast out pretty far, but i dont know what im doing wrong or if it's the gear I have
@@sinal2493 If you’re going for distance, you want a 12’ft surf rod. The Daiwa beef stick is a great option. Also, braided line will also cast further with less resistance vs monofilament. Your reel size should be around the 6000-8000 size for adequate line.

This guy has a fishing pole marketed to people who want to catch a crab. Amazing. Just like Hake, Tilapia and Swai - all of them were considered trash and now people think they're great. LoL
@@FISHH00KS bugs of the sea! 🦀
Not Dungeness. It's been a high end crab for well more than 50 years.
can you explain how they stick their legs in the line thats really strange
@@kurtw356 There’s bait in the middle of the snare. Crabs are attracted to the bait cage and gets entangled in the loops. When I reel in, the loops cinch down on their legs or appendages and snares them
How do you know when to reel them in?
@ You want to check between 3-5 minutes after casting. You can also do a check by lifting the rod up slightly to feel for weight. If there’s heavier weight other than the snare, likely there’s a crab on there
Also how do you like that rod. Been looking at building some simple durable rods for crabing..
@@KMORGAN302 The Okuma Crab Snare special is nice but I had to cut off 9” off the handle because it was too long. Very uncomfortable position when reeling in. Very lightweight and would recommend. Only downside is the rod guide ring is known to crack or fall off. I’ve had one crack and fall off within 5 uses. Other than that, I had the guide replaced and the rod is great.
What reel are you using?
@@KMORGAN302 I’m using a Penn 650ssm full metal. You want solid reels so you won’t strip your gears, break handles, break the foot of the reel from cranking down on heavy dead weight crabs
😎💯✌☃..Garlic Bread an Garlic Butter sauce....mmmmmmmm...good.....!!!!!!!
I'm looking into getting into crabbing with a snare. What is a good reel to use? I've retired and I am on a fixed income. I will be working on getting these, a little at a time after the new year. crabbing. Love your videos. I am learning a lot before I attempt to snare while my pot is soaking. Thank you.
@@neets458 First of all thank you for watching! We currently have a giveaway where we are raffling off 3 brand new Penn Reels, snares and casting gloves. Check out website for details. We recommend a 10-12ft surf rod medium to medium heavy rating. You want a sturdy rod because you’re tossing a weighted snare with bait which can get quite heavy and has a lot of load on the rod. A frequently used rod for crabbing is the Daiwa Beef Stick, Ugly Stick, or Okuma Crab Special. These rods are about $65-$75 price range. I recently changed from the Daiwa Beef Stick to the Okuma Crab Snare Special. I had to cut off 9” off the handle because it was too long and very uncomfortable to reel where I was hunched over. Went to Home Depot and got a 1” chair end cap to stick at the end of the handle. Now that I modified the length, it’s much more manageable and I love it. For the reel, use a good quality reel medium to large sized reel. When I first started crabbing, I used cheap reels that ended up stripping the gears, breaking the foot of the reel, the handle or cracking the housing. When you are reeling in, you are reeling in the weight of the crab snare, the bait, possibly multiple crabs, and fighting the current. This puts a lot of strain on the gears which result in putting more torque on the handles, overworking the gears, and friction on the foot of the reel which may snap. We recommend PENN brand reels such as Battles, Pursuits or SSMs. We personally use 650-750SSMs because they are full metal housing and interior gears. We can reel up 4 crabs at a time with no problem and will never strip the gears or break the foot of the reel. For the line, you should use a minimum of 30-40lb monofilament line or 60-80lb of braided line. I currently use 80lb of Beyond Braid line. You are throwing very heavy weights so be sure you have adequate line to support the tension, otherwise you will end up snapping your line upon casting or retrieval.
