OUR FIRST RACE SINCE INJURY!!!! Boy am i glad to be back running and racing. Here is my showcase of the Vitality London 10000 which is a 10km race in the heart of London - starting and ending at Buckingham Palace. I set out with no pace in mind and wanted to take it nice and easy... and in classic fashion i didn't follow that at all! Nonetheless, it was a fantastic time out there! Shot with: GO...

The injury channel. 😂 No, I’m terribly sorry, ❤ but at least you have some content to document the next six weeks in terms of recovery.
Love it mate....looking forward to seeing you come back strong 💪
Love it mate 👏👏👏
And also make sure you get your ticket before it sells out 😂
Hahaha that is such a great tip, especially with most races selling out right after they are released 😂
😂 I know someone who does that.
Oh this injury sucks. Sucks that you still experience them. For me shin splints usually come a bit delayed. I want to be careful with advice, but the answer might be in lack of strength, old shoes, managing load or flexibility. You will find out.
Yes I think you’re right! I’ve definitely been too weak in my calves especially (I didn’t train them at all for my marathon in April!). Here’s hoping I can shift this injury!
I love the Hoka Mach shoe. I've had the 4 and 5. I will look at the 6 soon. Wishing you all the best with the scan.
I heard the 6 had some good improvements on the 5! Definitely loving them at the moment!
As soon as I get any kind of shin niggle I get new trainers - hopefully it helps you. Fingers crossed that training can continue 🤞👍
I’ve got to say the new shoes are making a difference! I can’t believe I didn’t know how much of an impact new shoes can have 😂
Stevenage marathon for me in a few weeks. Similar story to you - entered whilst injured 13 weeks with a calf tear, but training has gone pretty well to date. Good luck with the training - looking forward to watching along!
Oh wow!! A big injury! I’m glad you are pulling through and still able to be out here running! Good luck with the marathon! You’re going to smash it!!
Nice vid - Vitality 10k looks like a great run!
Good luck with the training and managing that injury 👍
Did I hear Vitality 10 Slay 👀
Has anyone ever said you are a creative genius?
@@TheAverageJoe-bw2fb yes, many people
Wow that looks like a busy 10k. Looked like a great race 👌
It was very busy!! At various points it became a bit congested 😂 but it was still a great time! Highly recommend!
I ran it for the 1st time and lovely it have booked for next year run
Ahhh that’s great, I’m glad you enjoyed it too! Vitality London is always a great time, it’s definitely one of the permanent races of my calendar year!
Back at it again. Gosh, I really want to go come to London and run this exact race.
Awesome mate. You are controlling your runs which is brilliant. I personally do that diaphragm breathing on longer runs. Just 2 or 3 times spaced out and it works well.
Ahhh that’s fantastic! I’ll have to give it a go more often, especially on those long runs! Thanks for sharing 😄
Good to see you back mate, hope the block goes well.
Cheers mate, I hope you’re doing well with your recovery from shin splints!
@@TheAverageJoe-bw2fb yeah not too bad. Decided to take a few month out to heal, and slowly getting back to it now as I have a London marathon place again! I was doing Valencia but decided to pull out. You’ll love it, I’ve ran it before and it’s an amazing race. Perfect for a PB, pan flat and very fast. Good luck, I’ll be following your training 👍🏻
Does anyone else have severe bloating and feel like garbage when carb loading. getting 70Percent of calories from carbs with little fiber.
Hmm I don’t have that myself! It could be to do with the types of carbs you’re eating? For example, certain breads or pastas can cause some people I know severe bloating so they tend to avoid it?
the vlogs are BACK
Was I missed? 💅🏻
Good luck Joe, look forward to following your journey. I have booked marathon number 2, Manchester 2025! I have Cardiff half in a few weeks and also a target to get a sub 20 5k by the end of the year!
Fantastic races and goals Carl!! How are you feeling about the Cardiff half coming up soon? Also, sub 20 is unreal! I think you’ve definitely got that in the bag before the year end!
@@TheAverageJoe-bw2fb I’m feeling more confident now that my mileage has been increasing. Same as you, building again from one 5k a week to three. Now my weekly mileage is back up to 40k with my last long runs 12k, 14k, 17k! ….I have 23secs to find after 12 attempts at a sub 20!
I am. currently training for The Yorkshire Marathon on 20 Oct. Looking forward to watching your training. Keep that smile 😃
Ahhh that’s fantastic Dean!! How has the training been going so far? You must have some very long runs coming up soon! Can’t wait to hear how it all goes!! 😄
Thank you so much. It's been ok so far and I'm hoping for 4hr 30 on the day 😊
MASSIVE! Best of luck mate! Can't wait to watch the journey and see how you get on💪
Ah Lex!! Great to hear from you mate! Hope you’ve been doing well the past few months? Are you doing any training for anything or running/ sports in general?
@@TheAverageJoe-bw2fb And yourself mate! I've been doing really well thanks, I've still been running but haven't documented it as much, but plan to make a return soon to start documenting the next marathon!
Great trailer! Look forward to the new training series!
With you 🤝😊
Thank you Dean you legend!! I hope you’ve been keeping well?
woooooooooooooo
Fancy getting the drone out for some cinematic shots? 👀
@@TheAverageJoe-bw2fb hmmm 👀
Hope you're still recovering well
Glad to hear the recovery is going well 👌
Thank you very much Stu!
We've missed you out there. You are back my man!! We said the comeback will be bigger than the setback and in time all these little roots you're putting down will grow and flourish later 🙌👏👏👏
Thank you so much my friend!! It feels fantastic being back in the saddle so to speak! 🫶
Good video mate and yes completely agree with all your points. From someone who has struggled with MTSS for all my running life, I definitely believe a positive mindset is the key. Being laid off so often with injury is a tough one to take, so keeping positive helps, and mixing in none load bearing training to keep you on plan is a good point too. Hope you are back out there soon and your MTSS is just a blip. I’ve took 4 weeks off and now my personal plan for the rest of 2024 is easy paced endurance building. Focusing on distance not speed. I’m really considering switching to trail running, ultras etc and switching my mindset from fast races to distance goals. Who knows hey. But keep positive mate, it will come good 👍🏻
Keep pushing man!
You really will come back with a new impetus and renewed strength. You'll be able to build back and be ready for all of your adventures ahead 🙏😊
Real good news Joe. Shin splints, who doesn't know them. Had it, got rid of it. Vlad Ixel’s Channel has great exercises, adding to the physio exercises you probably already do every day.
Nobody really enjoys the inside stationary bike. No one!!!! But you’re doing great! Better than nothing.
Thank you!! Yeah exactly, it’s boring but it’s better than just sitting down 😂
You're doing all you can and you'll be back. Thank you for the update ⭐
Thank you Dean!! 💪
Set backs make you more experienced you’ll be back firing better in the end.
I feel you Joe, I’m still struggling with my lingering injury from my marathon. I’m trying to stay positive, swimming, cycling, yoga and It has given me an opportunity to volunteer and do things like c25k with my son but tbh it’s starting to get me down now.
Ahhh Carl I’m really sorry to hear about your injury ☹️ we got this though, if we keep doing what we need to do to recover, we’ll be back in no time 💪
Keep calm, until you have a picture of the potential stress fracture. Good to be cautious tho. Best case, it's just a minor injury. Hopefully. Fingers crossed.
Thank you! Yes you’re right! Hoping for this to just be a minor injury 🤞
Sounds like shin splints, you need to rest yes, but get an x-ray to make sure its not a fracture. Shin splints you will only see in an MRT.
Yes you’re right. I’m having a face to face with my physio in the coming week so will see what he suggests but I imagine a scan will clear a lot up.
The problem is everyone is talking about upping the millage instead of mastering 5k first. Make sure you can run solid 5k - below 20mins, then move it to 7k for a few months then 9k etc Most people don’t believe it is possible to come down to 20mins 5k running only 3 times a week 5k distance (15k/week) but it is absolutely possible and it can save your bones, muscles and tendons from getting frequent injuries
You’re right most people talk about upping mileage instead of nailing faster times in the shorter distances. Solid advice on improving the 5k times first. I definitely want to work on my 5k time soon (when this injury dies down) so your comment came at a good time, thanks for sharing!
I had a similar issue that I feel like is just resolving. For me I think it was caused by ramping up volume to quickly with jump rope combined with running. I visited a Physiotherapist for my running and did a gait analysis. Doing much better after some adjustments to form.
Ahhh yep I’ve started to think that I’ve probably ramped up volume too much at some point as well! Interesting about changing your form which seems to have helped. I haven’t really had much analysis on my form so that may be something I should look at when I can run again, thanks for sharing!
Hey mate, wish you a speedy recovery. Don't be surprised if it takes longer than you expect for it to return to normal, depending on the location they can be really hard to settle! I got a stress fracture on my anteromedial tib in Oct 2023 after a mountain bike crash on the tibia, a new running program (got lost on a trail run and ended up doing 27km, a whole 15km longer than my previous longest run!) and being on my feet a lot for work. I'm not back to running yet and it's June 2024. I didn't want it to effect my job, so I didn't tell work and was fast-walking around 15,000 steps per day in my day job! Have mostly kept off it since Feb and am back to heavy weights now with jumping/running the next milestones. My bench press skyrocketed so it's not all bad, and I can still get on the bike 🤷♂
Cheers mate! That mountain bike crash sounds horrible, but I’m glad that it sounds like you’re doing a lot better since then! What would you say was the biggest challenge whilst getting through the early stages of your injury?
Mate, that sounds like MTSS, or shin splints, and something I’ve struggled with myself for about 10 years. So I feel your pain, quite literally I get it on the inside of both shins, about 4 or 5 inches up from my ankle bone and about an inch or so of localised pain. It can be debilitating sometimes. I hope it’s not that, but if it is I hope your physio can help. Personally, I’ve never been able to fix it, and if it is that I’d be happy to share my knowledge on it as I’ve seen everyone and done everything. I now just manage it. Let me know how you get on. All the best
Ah yes I remember all the injury woes you’ve been having! How do you currently manage it? Is it rest until the pain goes down and then slowly working back up? Also do you have a video talking about your injuries in detail? Would love to have a watch and listen
@@TheAverageJoe-bw2fb I struggle with it if I’m honest. Tried absolutely everything but no matter what, as soon as I get into a block of training it returns. Had it for over 10 Years, bit of a nightmare. I’m off now with it after a heavy hill session, haven’t run for 12 days as my right shin was absolutely done, so painful. Happy to have a chat with you about it, too much to go into a RUclips comment
Your last comment made me feel like it was a good idea to document my journey, as I’m struggling with it again now. Just made the video live, it might be of interest listening to my rant and the things I’ve tried to fix it 😂
There may be positives here. You can do some other low impact exercises and build back carefully and steadily; then you can get back and stay back. Hopefully it's a few weeks and your fitness will be there.
Yes exactly right! I’m doing spinning and gym work which isn’t aggravating the injury so I’m happy about that!
Sorry to hear but just enjoy all the free time over the next two weeks! The timing isn't the worst. 😊
Yes you’re exactly right! I’m in my downtime so if it had to happen, beat it was now than later 😂
Excellent stuff man! Great job on the run and the video! Keep it up!
Top vid mate! 🥳 The course was a bit of a blur to me so I'm glad I could relive it 😊 Hackney, always a good one
Cheers mate! Haha it was for me too! I was editing thinking “I don’t remember that part” 😂
