Doing heat training to become a better gravel racer
Heat training is a hot topic.
You might have seen videos from pro riders doing heat training, but why?
Doing heat training have a few benefits. First of it will help you perform better in the heat. But by doing a short heat training blok it will also help you perform better in normal temperatures. If you do heat training for 4-5 weeks you can actually get the same benefits as high altitude training, but without living on the top of a mountain. So more red blood cells.
I use the CORE body temperature sensor to guide my in my heat training.
This is the reason we see guys like Remco Evenepoel doing it.
I hope that by doing heat training now I'll give myself a better starting point when I can ...

I will be a better Gravel Racer in 2025!

Rehab of my ruptured achilles tendon is moving in the right direction and it's time to ramp up the training. This injury is a sure thing to no more gravel racing this year, but I plan to come back as a better gravel racer in 2025. Besides doing my rehab i'm starting to do more real training. I try to work on some weaknesses so I'll be stronger in gravel races next year. Besides getting back int...
Comeback to gravel racing in 2025 starts now - Achilles Tendon Rupture
My season of gravel racing is well and truly over since my achilles tendon rupture. I'm a few weeks into my recovery now and it's time for me to start moving. The rehab after a achilles tendon rupture is very long. I'll not be getting on my gravel bike anytime soon. But after this season of unluck my goal is to come back to gravel racing better and stronger in 2025. #gravelracing #cycling
No more gravel racing in 2024

No more gravel racing in 2024. So far the 2024 gravel race season has been the season of bad luck. I had hoped to turn it around in the coming months, but that will not happen. A week ago I tore my achilles tendon. A complete Achilles Tendon rupture. So now the gravel race season of 2024 is over for me. An achilles tendon rupture is a pretty serious injury and it will take some time to heal. So...

Cringe 😻🔥
Great video! I’m pretty new to gravel riding and racing. I REALLY understand what you meant at the end of the video about having to train for the really hard/high-intensity parts of gravel rides.
what an cute home you have. Cool video
Respect for all the time you invest in this, but sometimes it’s better to face the mirror and see your limitations. What I mean is that people like Remco are already top without anything and all those things like this are extra on top of this (and just to say he’s certainly not doing what you’re doing, most pro’s use the pod to keep body temperature low when in summer). Qualifying for the worlds would be something that your capable off just by training, not with this. I’m pretty sure it will have more a negative impact than positive on your health and body overtime.
You didnt get the message. He cant train like normal because he is on rehab. And with heat he can get his heartrate up without training too hard. Imho he does the best out of his situation.
@@windar2390 you might have missed the title of the video ?!? But my answer is pretty straightforward and simple, if you can’t qualify with normal training, you will also not qualify with all those special methods (I recall something of doing vo2max all the time)
@TSbiker10 Sorry mate, but you dont really get the full picture. First of, my bad race results at uci gravel races this year had nothing to do with fitness. Bad bike handling skills and a bit of bad luck. You mention pros not using the core sensor to do heat training. Well, spend 2 seconds looking at the website.. its made for heat training. You can easily find videos of remco doing heat training or the entire team of Lotto dstny.. you also mention vo2 max blocks. This is not a concept I made up. You can find lots of interesting research papers about it. Both heat training and vo2 max blocks is ideas backed by science. You should really try a simply google search before posting a comment like this. I guess i'm just the type of person who like to try things and get smarter
@windar2390 thanks mate. You get it
@@gravelracingwithmadsbang it wasn’t meant to sound negative, just realistic and in debate. Handling skills is also training … I also never said that for example VO2max training is bad, but you tried to do nothing else if I recall correctly. And about the sensor, I do know for what it’s meant yes, Remco lives just a few blocks away and certainly isn’t using the heat training the same way you do (constantly), but I understand if you are interested in all this and want to test everything at his max. I still doubt if it’s healthy and/or useful. There’s a lot of other things you can still test like ketones, sleeping in an altitude bedroom, monitor your nutrition intake and much more.
Stay in the zone, just work on your mental strength too. See yourself back on the bike. Heat training can mess with your mind because of the temps. Otherwise keep healing up and November is around the corner.
God bedring Mads
Mange tak🙏
Please give us a review of the Core sensor. I couldn’t get mine paired with heart rate so it couldn’t give me proper read outs
will do. So far all good. Had no problem pairing with HR monitor in app or connecting it to my wahoo. Do you still use it?
Hey .. I was hoping you looked into those special patches I recommended?🤔
I know about the patches and have tried them before, but its not really working for me.
Go carnivore for long term healing and it will keep you lean and strong. Do it now while you are laid up. Good luck.
You will return my friend! 💪🏻
Thanks mate! I will.🤘
@@gravelracingwithmadsbang Jeg kører lige udenfor VM kval. får desværre "hygget mig" lidt for meget nede i feltet for at spare på kræfterne.
So sorry to hear this, I hope you recover fast. When you started to have Achilles issues did you do any strengthening exercises? I've also had issues in the past and I've been doing calf raises for the last two years or so. I'm a bit worried that this can happen to me as well.
Thanks. Hope for a fast recovery 🙏 I've had issues for maybe 5 year. Done lots of work to try and make it better, but nothing really help. A few year back I got an ultrasound on it and was told it would never get better. To much scare tissue in it. That was when I stopped running completely. Because of all the scare tissue the achilles was very unflexible and not as strong. I think this was what ended up making it rupture.
I had a major injury when I was young I still have lots of hardware in my leg because of it, it feels like the world falls apart especially for us folks that are active. I can tell you it's not easy BUT you will get through it and you can get stronger and even better shape. Good vibes your way.
Thanks a lot. It really does feel like the world falls apart when you are used to moving a lot.
God bedring. Godt kæmpet!
Tusind tak Jacob 🙏
Oh no… I’m sorry man. Really sad news. I think those falls had something to do with it, it was only now it surfaced I think. Anyways, just stay in shape with stretching and breathing exercises, you can still remain healthy. How can I contact you? I have something you need to look into for your healing process.
It's no fun. Think I would rather break a bone than tore my achilles. I try to move as much as possible. You are welcome to reach out on my mail gravelracingwithmadsbang@gmail.com
Sent you a mail.😃
Ohh no, so sorry!
Det er virkelig noget lort!
The night is darkest just before sunrise. 2025 will be your year. Rest up and get stronger 🫡👍
That's the plan. For now it's all about resting and healing and as soon as possible I'll start training.
Super unlucky. Hope You have a speedy recovery and a good wedding despite the little bump 🤞💪
Thanks a lot. Not the wedding I planed for, but it will be memorable😂
Gravel 150 was a shit show for everyone, don’t get yourself down about that one.
It sure was.. Lots and lots of crashes out there.
I crashed my bike on my honeymoon, shattered my collarbone and 4 ribs. My wife was pregnant too. The worst part though is not being able to ride, it shows how addicted to it we are. I was able to Zwift after a few weeks at least. It never healed properly even with surgery. You can still do lots of things with your kid though, you can play with him and read to him that is really important for a child, so make the most of the 'down' time with him!
That's not the honeymoon you hope for. Sorry to hear it never healed right. As a mention in the video not being able to train is bad, but not being able to play around with my son and help out at home and with the wedding is worse. I do the chill stuff with him, but i hate that I can't pick him up and play around with him. But I think I'll be able to move more around in a few weeks.
@@gravelracingwithmadsbang Reading and playing with toys with him is also super important, use the extra time with him and enjoy it! Kids grow up so fast, I guarantee you that in 20 years you would give everything you have, every last dollar, to be able to travel back in time to today right now and be exactly where you are. It's priceless.
I believe you. The last year and a half has gone by sooo fast!
Oh no sorry to hear that, get well soon Mads
Thanks a lot!
aaai sorry to hear Mats. wish you a speedy recovery.
Thanks a lot Jack. 🙏 long road ahead
@@gravelracingwithmadsbang I know the feeding , early juni I was out for a short time after a crash on the gravel bike , brused ribs and dislocatie colar bone.
Damn! So sorry to hear about your Achilles’ tendon. Hopefully you’re doing some physical rehabilitation in order to speed your recovery.
Thanks Dave. I'll do lots of rehab. Luckily they got a hole program to follow the next few months
Speedy recovery!
Thanks a lot. Really hope so🙏
Good recovery man!
Thanks a lot!🙏
Mads, my friend, I feel for you, 4 years ago someone pulled out in front of my tt bike with a van. I hit it at 56kmh, shattered my shoulder socket, shoulder blade and collar bone and pushed the whole lot through my ribs and into my lung, 4 months of bed rest, doctors told me I would not get full functionality of my arm and I wouldn’t swim and probably not ride a bike again, until then I was competing in Ironman. With titanium ribs, a collar bone in three parts and reduced lung function I could run-walk 1 mile. It took me a year to train up to ultra marathons, then I decided the surgeons were too used to sick people so I bought a grail (suspension for the shoulder see? And tried to swim again, I am a bit slower on the swim, but otherwise did Corke 70.3 last summer (the one where two people drowned) and mostly got hooked on riding gravel. You will get past this in terms of riding, and your son and wife to be clear;y are not going anywhere, stay strong my firemd 💪
Thanks mate. What a ride for you. Great work on getting back to an active lifestyle. Your massage we for sure motivate me when things get hard! Very very much appreciated🙏
I knew something was wrong when you didnt upload new strava activities. I wish you a good rehab. And remember, muscle memory is real. You will be back in top shape in no time when you start training again.
Thanks a lot. I'm pretty sure getting back in shape once the achilles tendon is right will come fast. It's only all the rehab before I can train properly,. But I'll try out a few things and hopefully speed the process up. Not really liking not riding my bike !
@@gravelracingwithmadsbang You can start rowing to keep the heart going. Victor Campenaerts does some row sessions. It complements cycling very well he says.
That's a really good idea!!
Sorry to hear, speedy recovery l,know how frustrating it is for an athlete to be injured, take care don’t be in a hurry
Thanks a lot. It sure is frustrating when you are used to getting out and moving. Hope I can start with some light activities in a few weeks
There’s always next year. I would also suggest the following for preparing for next year’s race season .Core work and lower back strength training especially if you are having continued lower back problems. Off season training may include 1) Kettle Bells 2) Isometric exorcizes 3) Rowing machines 4) Swimming which will all help with develop functional strength, explosive power and works the cardiovascular system. Being able to take time off the bike will also help you recoup mentally. Thankfully you also have a good support system with friends, family and an on-line community. Cheers!
Det er i hvert fald blevet mit go to gravel dæk.
Great vid! I stopped at 101k, to crazy for me haha. During my ride I saw 2 other people ending up in the water aswell.
If I hadn't travelled all the way from Denmark I'm not sure I would have made it all the way either. Crazy conditions! Happy to hear I wasn't the only one ending up in the water 😅
congrats to all finishers and thanks for sharing
Thansk a lot 🙏
Welcome in rainy Netherlands.
🤣🤣
It was a nice Cyclocross ;) And never go with slick tires again haha
hahah it sure was😂 can't say I will never go with slicks again, but for sure never in conditions like this again.
Are you able to get a second set of wheels with tires that work better in the mud, so you can swap wheels quicker if needed ?
That would for sure be the best option, but also the most expensive one.😅 Getting married in a few weeks and I'm not sure my future wife would appreciate me spending money on a extra set of race wheels at the moment😂 But not a bad idea for next year!
@@gravelracingwithmadsbang Understand your situation, I'm married for 42 years so it's less of an issue 😉. Good luck and have a nice wedding party.
Haha, that is a bit more 😀 thanks a lot.
Thanks for the video. Did you also wear down everything on your bike? (drivetrain, brake pads, bearings? My cousin also rode the race and had a lot of mechanical wear 😮
I did! All the wet sand and mut really isn't good for the bike. Couldn't really break anymore the last 30 k 🤣
@@gravelracingwithmadsbang Same here. After 120kms, it was steel on steel for braking. But not just when I wanted to brake - it was all the time - the steel spring pad carriers wore through, letting the brake pad backing plates rub on to the discs. It was a horror show. I'd have been better off riding with my 33mm Challenge Limus tyres from CX.
This race was something else ,keep progressing and believing 🌞🚴🏻♀️🚴🏻♀️🚴🏻♀️
It really was. And such a shame. It's a really cool race, but with weather like this it's no fun.
Gravel bike is basically a 26 inch mtb with less mud clearance. :d
😂
So far this is the worst gravel race, that mud is for mountain bikes. What a pity. I wish you had mud last year and this would be fine, you had more confidence this time, I could see your positioning and how you closed the gaps. Just keep trying, don’t give up man! Your time will come, that extra race time is good training. So you win anyway! 🤛🏻
Thanks a lot mate. It really was a crazy day. But like you said, if nothing else a got a long ride in 😅
Keep pushing, you will succeed!
Hope so 😀🤞
Déjà-vu with the mud racing. ;-)
