I know what you mean. Good gear can show the limitations of recordings.
Looking forward to your shoot out.. I'm planning on generally same upgrade for my system.. DL103 and SUT..
We are also looking forward to the shoot out. No doubt the AU340 will come out on top, but by what margin, who knows?
interested in seeing the foam repair and comparison between the320 and340 .
Hello! Yes , should be fun. My dad is going to install my metal bodied Denon DL-103 into my Rega RB250 with Michell heavy Technoweight. That way, we can compare SUT.
Have you been keeping up with the 'Mend it Mark' phono pre-amp repair video that got taken down with an illegitimate copyright claim?
My dad has been following this case very closely and is subscribed to Mend it Mark. Tom Evans wanted to charge £6000 to replace a single faulty Tantalum capacitor......let that sink in!
@@mydadsaysaudio6192 And Evans also challenged Mend it Mark with a note saying 'Bet you can't fix it'. There are about a dozen re-uploads of the video by various RUclipsrs. At this rate, by New Years, 90% of YT videos will be re-uploads of the video 😂
Uh I orderder new dual-amp but it was one piece. And I need two? One is not enought?
Hello. You need 2 op amps for the Fosi V3 stereo amplifier.
I yoused to have a pair of tdl speakers years ago and 100 watt class a valve amps and thay youed to make the windows shake alass my wife at the time also hated them😮
Sounds like a lot of fun! My dad's a bachelor so he can shake all the windows he wants. I'm reduced to a small room in my house with my wife.
I have one , refurbished it myself using parts from RS comps Best sounding amp ever IMHO.
Hello guys, nice project and a lot of interesting information alongside. Thanks for mentioning the 3,9K item regarding the marantz cd 273.
No worries. Have you tried it yet?
Not yet, I hope to get started in January - there are some prior projects from my bosses (wife) side to be completed 😉. I´ll keep you informed
@PeteA362 cheers mate. It's a worthwhile and inexpensive upgrade.
I have a pair of linaeum, great little speakers. One swiss company makes a bass and a mid high module based on this tech indeed. They use paper and ask crazy prices. Google rubanoid to find those And I am an electrostats guy, know what you mean about presentation
I am getting a pair of these. To combine with open baffle bass (2*15") in two way or use my electrostats as mostly full range with additionsl bass and tweeter. Going fully active ofcourse
Very nice. Both applications ought to work well due to the dipole nature of electrostatics and open baffles. My dad will be using them in his Visaton no box speaker, crossed over high as super tweeters.
I use the LT317AT also in pre-amp power supplies.
My dad is a big fan of the LT317AT too.
hi what brand is the acoustic panels. nice gear. thanks!
Hello Alan. The panels were non branded. You should be able to find them on eBay with a search. They are very affordable, I think they were about 20 dollars for 12. Thanks for your comment.😁
I'd love to see the inside of your Td160 as I have a TD160 Super and I'd like to modify sub chassis like you have
Hi Robert. I'll be replacing the springs on the sub chassis in the near future and will be sure to post a video showing the interior. Thanks for your comment.😁
great stuff...more please
Thanks for your positive message. We are glad you enjoyed the video. Part 2 covering the DAC will be posted in about a week.
We don't get to hear it then?
Hey Richard. I suppose I could find a copyright free MP3 file and record it through my phone, then you could play it back with your laptop or phone, but it wouldn't do it justice. Needless to say, it will be my last amplifier.
@@mydadsaysaudio6192 Would still be nice to hear it though, those speakers look cool.
@richardcrook2112 Thanks mate. Yeah, I love the amplifier /speaker combo. Sounds great in my little room. Makes me realise that the amplifier not only has to make the cone move, but also brake or stop. The Shuguang is masterful at this.
Please share some listening videos🙏. I ordered one from Chine. Still waiting for it to arrive.
Let us know what you think of it when it arrives.😀
May I ask, which speakers are you planning on using with the 845 amplifier?
@@mydadsaysaudio6192 I will be using Focal Aria 936, these are quite sensitive speakers. Then I will try Dali Ikon 2 also which has sensitivity 86 db.
@@mydadsaysaudio6192 I will 👍🏻
So I’ve heard if the internal fuses are blown replacing them runs the risk of doing more damage and that it is an indication something is wrong usually with a transistor. I have blown fuses on each channel so should I replace and see if it works or wait to check if the transistors are okay.
Hello! Just spoke with my dad. He suggests you check the transistors for dead shorts before replacing the fuses in this unit. Hope this helps. Cheers.
Hey Steptoe and Son lol. This was a really interesting video. My player is a Marantz CD94 from 1990 with that chip and it delivers for me full on. However I always wondered if it would benefit from say a CD1 mech instead of the oomp. one in it (it's a special ed. model). Do u know that there is an amp builder on YT in Canada that has a biz up-specing cheaper integrated amps, Angela Gilbert Yeung (haha a tranny that builds amps) and it seems to be lucrative. So this could be a nice little earner as no-one is ever happy with what they have right? ;-D
Hello! While I'm a big fan of the all metal, swing arm CD mechanisms from the first Philips players, and I've lived with about 5 models, I'm not sure how compatible they would be with later dacs. The CDM0 with its cost no object Magnesium body and Zeiss optics laser was only ever used with the first 14 bit TDA1540 Dacs in the first generation players. The Marantz CD12 incorporates a slightly scaled back, but still impressive and all metal, CDM1 Transport was one of the first 16 bit players with high end mechanisms, prior to cost cutting. My own personal modded Marantz CD273 player uses the CDM4. So, in answer to your proposition, maybe? If you had the know how and the mechanisms were compatible? Also, I've never heard of Angela, we will be sure to check them out!
@@mydadsaysaudio6192 Angela Gilbert Yeung is a great amplifier builder. Their amps are all hand built by Angela Gilbert and will often carry 1 to 2 farads capacitance onboard and can have external capacitor banks added to up that. Their previous company was Blue Circle.
@ thanks for your reply. yeah that’s why it seemed an attractive idea but as I’m happy with the player it was one of those maybe someday if it stops working things :-D
@@mddawson1 that's a massive amount of storage!
The OMA of CD Transport's...!
Technical question on those transistors you are replacing. I have a 2nd hand RCD-955AX that was mis-tracking. Most of the forums said that those two transistors were the problem so I replaced them. However, my unit had a diode attached to the underside of the board to both transistors - a diode not shown in the circuit diagrams. Does yours also have these diodes? FYI, it is still mis-tracking after replacing the transistors.
Hey, thanks for your query. In answer to your question, my dad says his unit does not have those diodes.
@@mydadsaysaudio6192 I thought that someone may have added them as a solution to the mis-tracking issue. It didn't work.
Beautiful amplifier. Those big SET’s tend to have great control over speakers, especially higher sensitivity ones. I’m a guitar and amp tech and share your dad’s sentiments about not working on anything over 600v. 1kV or more is just scary. Thanks for showing that excellent amp.
Thanks, Nick. I'm a big fan of this amplifier. As you say , it sounds good with high sensitivity speakers. Hopefully, it has a long life. I've already started scoping for techs who work on such gear. Funnily enough, I was driving home from work and stopped behind a Ute with images of tube amps and text stating that the driver was a techo. I didn't want to pull my phone out to take a picture while driving, and he drove off before I could commit his number to memory. With the help of Google, I located him. With any luck I won't be needing his services. I've already found my next dream amplifier, an Audio Research D79. The quest never ends!
Greetings. What happened to the Heil as tweeters? Did the project not take place?
Hello Jose. The Heils are still in their boxes. The tweeter upgrade for the Visaton No Box speakers is on hold for the moment, while my dad pursues other projects.
Dont understand the reason for this video. Could you at least tell how they are setup?
Hello! Certainly. Please refer to our full length video on this amplifier configuration for more information. Thanks.
Hi, as an owner of SL-10 with the original pickup... this one is very, very good (..in my opinion at least). I´m looking forward to see how you clean and if you relubricate the tracking arm - and which oil to use. I did that on mine like a year ago and I am having trouble now with the tracking and it is obvious that the arm is not moving frealy - I think that the oild I used got "stiff" and therefore I'm having this problem. Don't know where to get information about the "correct" oil - so looking forward to look at part 2. Best regards from Iceland - Axel
Hi Axel. We lubricated the main bearing but just gave the tonearm rail a basic clean. It's tracked perfectly for the last year. Perhaps try cleaning the rail and see how it goes?
@@mydadsaysaudio6192 Thanks - that might be the problem I'm fasing. I will try this. R. Axel
Back in 1991, I had the Rock Reference turntable with Excalibur tonearm. It was a truly formidable combination. Sadly as I understand it, the turntable was too labour intensive to manufacture and the company ceased production.
My dad and I would both love to get our hands on a Rock Reference. As it stands, we are more than happy with our MK2 Rocks. Do you still own a turntable?
@mydadsaysaudio6192 Sadly no. I had to sell the Reference in '94 to finance the purchase of a Mac computer. I'm a graphic designer and photographer. My amp were from a small UK company called Deltec. When they went bust, I could no longer get them repaired. At that point, I decided that I'd spent enough on hi-fi! I still keep an eye on things, but I'd no idea that Max had launched a Rock 7. The reviews have been great too! Now we have hyper turntables like the Wilson Benesch GMT-1 for a hundred times the price. In fairness, the reviews I've read, state that it's pretty incredible. But it's the law of diminishing returns.
Hi guys, nice Video. I actually caught such an exemplar in quite good condition. Anyway all capacitors shall be replaced according to your recommendations. What I didn´t copmpletely understand is the item with the 3,9 k resistor at the AD 712. Can you possibly specify a litte bit more (between which Pins)? Greetings from Germany
Congratulations on your find. It's a very nice player. I will get back to you with the information on biasing the op amps when I next see my dad. Thanks.
thanks, looking forward to it
I have Fostex MK2, since more than 8 Years, like them very much!
I love mine too!
its not a good idea to use two lots of solid core wire! not necessarily you're causing induction issues just one piece would have done one millimeter solid core wire. why have you got to doubtle it up for you don't need to. If you want to get more bass out of it put an induction coil say 3.7h you'll need a resistor parallel with the coil and a capacitor. You have to mess around with the resistor a sandcast resistor non-inductive is fine nothing wrong with them. somewhere between say 38 killer ohms to 28 depends how much mid-range you want to get through and a Jensen metal film capacitor of say 2.2uF 5 Watts. parallel as well. Also stick a 0.22 standard poly film capacity 250 volts, across the coil you could try that directly across the driver it does give a better base at very low frequencies! try that first if you want! is better control to the inductor in the driver better damping Factor.
Hello. First, thank you for a well thought out comment. We appreciate your input. To your first point, there is no inductance in the cable. My father and I have used this configuration many times. As to your suggestion of using a Mox filter, my dad is fully aware of them and uses one in his Visaton Open Baffles, so, it's not out of the question. However, we are going to try the direct coupled route to start and see how it goes. Cheers.
@@mydadsaysaudio6192 you're wrong! of course if you twist a pair of cables you're going to get high inductance, even a single Strand cable contains inductance and there's no point as I explained take care
Enjoyed a look at those full-range drivers and the cabinets
Thanks! I just got them home safely. 🏡
I have the Shuguang 845 mono blocks. This looks like the two mono blocks in one chassis. I been enjoying these for over 6 year's now great amplifier.
That's awesome. I'm pleased to hear your amplifiers have stood the test of time. Gives me some confidence in their longevity. And yes, I agree they are a great amplifier!
Out of curiosity, how hot do your amps run? My transformers get quite hot to the touch.
Hello, can I ask you some questions: 1. Did your amp came in its original packaging or wooden crate? 2. Did you buy direct from Shuguang store in Ali Express? 3. How does it sound? You have a nice 845 amp there, enjoy..!
Hello. The amp came in a large cardboard box strapped inside with a foam cutout. I purchased it from eBay. I own 4 tube amps from Audio Note etc and the 845 sound's the best. I think it will be my final amplifier.😁
@@mydadsaysaudio6192Thanks for your reply. Enjoy your 845. Cheers..
It's pronouced :"shoe-gwong", not "sh-gwaaang".
Thanks!
Would this power my infinity towers? They are 150 watts, but a different class of watts I think
Honestly, I'm not sure . Might work but not be optimal. The 845 tube was introduced in 1931 by RCA. Back then, loudspeakers had to be efficient and an easy load to match the lower power amplifiers of the day. Your Infinity towers are a more modern design and released when high power transistor amplifiers were plentiful.
There are 2 factories. PS vane and linia. The other one became PS vane
Interesting .Thanks for the info. I'm happily running a set of Linlais.
No problem enjoy
The transformer requirements for those 845’s are crazy. The plate will swing to almost twice the B+ voltage at full power. This also necessitates extra voltage insulation. Definitely not the easiest tube to design an amp around
Very true. I'm always a little nervous switching it on!
Good looking amp
Thanks! I love it.
Is it an amp or a lamp that looks like an amp? I just don't dig how bright it is, the light not sound output.
Hello! Yes, this is a tube amplifier that uses 845 tubes in the output. The 845 is a huge tube and glows very bright. The 845 was originally used for radio transmitting and is very powerful.
@@mydadsaysaudio6192 Pretty sure they should not glow white. If that is the case irl, then you should check the filament current against the oem tube manufacturer (and not the amp manufacturers) specifications and set accordingly. This will vary depending on what type of filament and coating are present. Probably should be anything from dull red to yellow, depending on the emissivity of the filament. But I think white is too hot.
@@mydadsaysaudio6192 I’m guessing they’re tungsten since they are still alive, but too hot a filament will not only cause sputtering but damage the plate from excessive dissipation. I’d double check the aftermarket tube mfrs. specs. If that’s what they call for then it’s probably ok. Edit: Important to note that the filament temperature is fundamentally a function of emissivity and not tube power. It needs to be right or the tube will have a short life.
@mysock351C The extreme white glow is mainly due to the camera catching the light. The tubes do glow very bright though. They have a healthy orange glow in person .
@mysock351C Check out the previous video on the 845 amps. It shows how much light the output tubed emit.
Love the 845 tube - I have a KT120 push-pull amplifier (1970s Luxkit A3600) and I'd upgrade to an 845 amp. The 1200V on the plate is massive!
I'm also a big fan of the 845 tube. I've kept every tube amp that's gotten into my collection. Yu Lu EL34, Leak Stereo 20, Audio Note Soro. They all sound good. Yes, 1200 volts is scary. You hear an audible noise on switch on!
Nice. 20 watts should be perfect for your Corals. I’ve got some horn loaded beta 8’s and, even though they can happily run on a couple of watts, I find 15 to 20 watts a very good match.
Absolutely. I've run my Coral speakers on 8 watts single ended EL34 tube amps, and you really hear a difference when upping the wattage.
Cool new toy...!
I'm loving it!

You are absolutely correct!

Seriously!
@@mydadsaysaudio6192 the seriously worst video presentation I have seen for a long time
My favourite amp.
I must admit my dad has heard this, but I haven't. Looks like a nice class AB amp.
@@mydadsaysaudio6192 people didn't know what great value for money it was. It must have been 10% the price of a Bryston or Levinson amp, with similar performance.
Are you sure that’s 18w?
Yes, the Audio Note Soro outputs 18 watts Class A power.
What brand of valves does it come with? I read somewhere it comes with Linlai’s which are quite good for modern tubes.
I purchased a pair of Linlai 845 tubes to sort of focus and manifest this amplifier when I started saving for it. This was fortunate because when the amplifier arrived one of the 845 output tubed was damaged, so I used the Linlais. The seller sent me a new tube to replace the Shuguang 845. So in answer to your query. It's supplied with Shuguang brand, but I've yet to hear them. So far I'm very pleased with the Linlai tubes.
I got a Willsenton R8 a couple of years ago. I carried out some of the Skunkie Designs mods to prevent it from red plating tubes. I found that my solid state Sunfire amp had more of a tube sound than the R8 with the stock tubes. I got some matched tubes and now the R8 has even more of a solid state than tube sound. I suspect tube sound is just higher levels of second order harmonic distortion.
Interesting. I was saying to my dad that with the exception of the 6SN7 tubes I won't be able to afford exotic tubes for the Shuguang 845 amplifier. Special or NOS 845 and 300B tubes cost a fortune! Luckily the amp still sounds great with its stock tubes. Mains transformers run a little higher than ambient temperature, so I'm optimistic about the amps longevity. Thanks for the input.
@@mydadsaysaudio6192 The R8 uses KT88 or EL34 tubes (you flick a switch on the back for the tube type), both of which are relatively cheap. I got a matched quad of 'The Tube Amp Doctor' KT88 tubes for $596. I also spent around $150 on 2 6SL7 (Phillips) and 3 6SN7 (AWA/RCA) NOS tubes for the amps frontend.
@@mddawson1150 for a nice pair of input tubes is reasonable. I'm just a bit frugal in as much as I won't spend 1k or more for a pair of special outputs or drivers when I can get a Chinese matched pair of 845 tubes for 200 Australian dollars.
@@mydadsaysaudio6192 I can recommend the NOS AWA/RCA 6SN7 tubes. They don't look anything special but they a really detailed. My R8 has quite harsh top end with the stock tubes (newish Sovtek) and also made weird crackling sounds through the speakers when warming up. The replacements got rid of weird noises, smoothed out the top end while adding more detail and they are pretty cheap because so many were made.
@@mddawson1 Thanks for the recommendation. I'll keep an eye out.
