Metra and Union Pacific content between Chicago and Elburn, IL, captured by various photo and videographers. With a third main track project underway between West Chicago, IL and Geneva, IL much of our focus will be centered on Geneva.

On two separate mornings in late June and on the first day of July we spent a little time at Geneva and Lombard. The third main track project through Geneva continues to progress.

This is an 11 hour late Amtrak Southwest Chief 4 arriving at the Naperville, IL combined Amtrak and Metra station on the BNSF Chicago Subdivision at 1:08am on June 16, 2024. This train originated in Los Angeles, CA on June 13, 2024. Mechanical and signal issues along the route was the culprit of this significant delay. (As a side note, we don’t cover too much Amtrak. A joint collaboration with @MetraBNSF We spent a couple of hours in Rochelle, IL for its railroad days event. The Rochelle diamonds where the Union Pacific Geneva Subdivision and the BNSF Aurora Subdivision cross one another is located about 80 miles west of downtown Chicago. Villa Park, IL sits between Lombard on the west and Elmhurst on the east. In just over 60 minutes at the Metra station, we saw no less than eight trains. In existing triple track territory, traffic flow is more fluid.

Construction seems to be progressing on the third main track project in Geneva, IL to eliminate a critical bottleneck along the line. On this 70 degree and sunny day, we get to see the eventual road bed for the third main track which will be set just to the south of the two current tracks. Every train on the morning of March 23, 2024 with the exception of one Metra was an eastbound train headed for UP Global 2 in Northlake, IL. Our time from 10:00am to 12:00 noon seemed short but it was one eastbound after another.

That third track progress seems to be moving along. Nice signal bridge there at Western Ave

7 engines on the EB manifest and 6 of them are SD70s. Then 1556 in the middle of all of it. Nice catch

Yes. The past few Saturdays we’ve been out there they’ve been working by the Western Ave grade crossing
