E38 Slash P38
Австралия
Добавлен 9 авг 2019
If it were successful, I may upload videos of work done on a 1998 BMW E38 740il Highline with M62B44 engine. Sometimes work done on a 1999 Range Rover P38 4.6HSE, will also be uploaded.
P38 Range Rover New Shock Absorbers front and Back
I document the install of new Shock Absorbers Front and Back to a P38 Range Rover. Very simple job. Huge difference and remarkable quality shock absorbing after install. Travelled for several months now and no issues.
The old ones were all completely shot and due for a change. The drive has improved dramatically. These should be changed every 80,000k.

P38 Range Rover 4HP24 connector leak Fix
Просмотров 19521 час назад
I fix transmission leak by removing 30mm Nut on electrical connector to the 4HP24. I emptied the fluid from Sump. (5 litres or more). Then cleaned thread on the connector with brake cleaner. I observe no fluid coming from the thread area. I then apply Hi-temp sealant to thread and nut. I waited 2 days then reconnected the loom to the connector and drove vehicle for a month. The leak is no more!...
P38 Range Rover Oil leak temp sensor
Просмотров 158День назад
I fixed a leaking oil temp sensor. For some reason I had suddenly started seeing oil on my filter. The last time I changed oil I noticed this. I assumed I had wrongly overtightened the filter, but I checked closer to see Oil was coming form above the filter?! This sensor thread needed a coating of loctite black silicone hi temp. This was enough to fix the issue. No temp sensor issues and no oil...
P38 Range Rover Upper Tailgate not closing
Просмотров 237День назад
Quick Fix to make rear upper gate close properly every time. This is just how to close the door and thus avoid the "tailgate open" warning while driving. While the button unlocks everytime, the lock mechanism needs replacing, as it is mechanically worn out or no longer functioning. Manual positioning of a part of the lock will allow the upper gate to close every time without issue.
P38 Range Rover - Alternator Regulator
Просмотров 2853 месяца назад
This just shows my process for changing the regulator on the stock P38 Alternator, saving the need to purchase a new Alternator which is really expensive and unnecessary. It was down around 8Volts, I bought a cheap regulator for under $50, an saved buying a new Alternator. With new regulator installed, about 30min of work, I had voltage back to 14.23Volts with engine running.

E38 BMW 740il ZF Servotronic solenoid valve repair wire

The red and yellow wires coming from steering box solenoid valve to the wheel arch area had completely disintegrated from years of heat. The wires were touching inside the thicker black sheath. I removed removed the solenoid, then cut down the sheaths to reveal fresh wire. I soldered new wires to the two wire ends poking out of the solenoid valve and the other end of the cable where it connects...
E38 BMW 740il - Leaking High Pressure Lines Fixed
Просмотров 12410 месяцев назад
The original hydraulic pressed crimps on my 4 pressure lines (gearbox/steering) were all leaking at both ends and totally useless if not somewhat dangerous. Must do replacement while engine is out. Hydraulic hose crimping is ideal for high pressure lines, some 80psi for gearbox and hundreds for steering (I believe). It can be quite costly to take these old lines to a shop and have them rebuild ...
E38 BMW 740il - Peeling clear coat fixed

2020 - I didn't intend to put this online. Several years ago I repainted peeled clear coat sections, which had taken a beating from the southern hemisphere sun. I sanded the entire hood, front right quarter panel (top), front left door (top), and rear left door (top), which had peeling clear coat. Weirdly the roof did not. My intention was to remove/stop peel and have a uniform shine across the...
E38 BMW 740il - DIGITAL HYBRID TV IBUS tuner
Просмотров 50511 месяцев назад
2018 showing a LHD 16:9, 2001 E39 screen, installed into my RHD, 1998 E38. Plug and play, was very easy to install despite people saying it cant be done (LHD in RHD). I prefer the LHD button placement! I had a 4:3 originally, obviously, being a 1998. The original analog TV tuner became useless circa 2011. I purchased an original 2008 X3 IBUS Hybrid Digital TV Tuner in 2018 and simply plugged it...
P38 Range Rover EAS re-calibration

I made re-calibration blocks with wood dowel. I recalibrate the EAS after resetting the fault using EASsuite. I enter new settings for each height mode using the blocks and EASsuite. I have a db9 to OBD2 cable, connected to an old XP laptop with a serial port for the DB9. It works well with the software. I will be needing to swap sensors on rear, but this did not stop the job from being success...
E38 740il M62 Alternator regulator

E38 740il M62 Alternator issues? Voltage regulator changeover. If you have low voltage while engine is running, and or battery is going flat. Maybe your regulator needs to be swapped, prior to buying a whole new Alternator which is very expensive. Check for 13 volts on your battery terminals (while engine is running). If its any lower, maybe the regulator is worn out, not necesarily needing new...

Good repair. My problem was that it was leaking at the pins, preventing the car to start at times
@@kalani1987 oh bother! with valve body off did you change anything else for example the o ring? or just the wiring section?
@ESlashP well I was told I needed a new valve body altogether. I haven't done anything yet as I'm contemplating how to fix. I have to unplug the connector now and then to prevent it from soaking too much to prevent the car from starting
How did that eBay rear airbag go? I've got to replace mine, normally I'd buy Dunlops but might give these a go.
@@pauldyson5121 No problems. Its been 5000km/6months now since. I think they are great. They travel the 4 stock heights well and are thick. They do appear differently but feel great. Dunlops look to be fatter or *perhaps* can go more extreme over stock high mode (just a guess). I dont feel any difference over speed humps @ 60kph (😁) still straight over no slowdown and ride is like a pillow. Just a month ago I put new shocks from similar supplier ($250 set of 4) and these are fantastic too. mild off road steep grassy mid rocky hills. Getting thru no issues.
What didthbdo the dowels need to be? Going to use my Nanocom tondo this
Hi, I haven't seen your video in a while. This gate trouble is pretty stressful. Is it hardening due to rust on the spring or wear on the plastic parts? Is it due to rust on the linkage parts? I feel that p38 makes the simplest parts more complicated than the rest. Good luck and happy holidays from Japan!
Personally i think it is worn plastic parts, since the electrical circuit is fine and the button works as it should and always has. This is a MECHANICAL ISSUE. Mechanical can be spring, sure, but I believe it is the plastic parts which have worn. I need a new lock mechanism. There is not enough time to sort out the actual problem, just get a new locking mechanism.
Been having fun with my p38 tailgate too! After tracing continuity to the drivers door and back turned out it was the tangs on the switch inside the button, your mechanism needs a good clean with brake cleaner as they are sensitive to dirt etc.
Thanks mate. Ill give it a go.
Aw man I’d love to feel how yours drives now vs mine currently hahaha. How is it that you’re confident enough to do work this extensive on your own cars?
Incredible, I’ll do this. I have a GEMS north of Auckland city :)
After installing the new airbags, I am planning to use an air tool to refill the system. Should I disconnect the dry airline from the top and refill from there? Could you provide a detailed explanation of the procedure? Thank you!
@@nigo225 Hi, Yes if you disconnect the top of dryer line, and pump air in through that line it will fill the tank. Using eas suite, I usually go to heights menu, then click 'up' about 30 times on that bag and quickly go to the air dryer line, pull the top install the air tool into the 8mm pipe and gun away. The bags fill up rather quickly this way. Every click of the mouse button on 'up' shoots air into the bags, so the more going in the higher it goes each click. The eas suite program has memory of every click. If you did both rears together click a number of times on each side then quickly add the air line and fire air into it. I use a filter to stop moisture coming from my compressor since you are bypassing the range rover dryer here... dont really want moisture getting into the tanks.
@@ESlashP Thank you so much for the incredibly clear explanation! Your instructions made it easy to visualize the process. The way you articulate everything is outstanding, and as others have mentioned, your videos on the P38 stand out as some of the clearest and most helpful guides available. I'm really looking forward to your future maintenance videos. Thank you again!
Hi there, how did you clean the head? Did you get it machined or did it yourself?
@@UwUthunder No machine. I used stock head gaskets. Not warped head. If had warped get machined. Need shop to machine warped head. I suspected it was not warped. Engine has almost factory psi in each cylinder after gasket change. All have increased. I recommend a shop machine head though, because they can check if you have cracks. It mine had cracks I wouldnt know until strting engine, without the tools to check for cracks. Its playing roulette to not have the heads machined and checked for cracks. However I did ok here with what I did.
Hey mate, my fathers p38 stopped cranking when it sat during the weekend so I started testing like you did in the video. I do hear a click under the seat from the becm it’s called? The starter turns when I jump the relay but it won’t fire up. Since yours started by jumping the relay I seem to have a different fault since my starter turns but car won’t fire up. Any ideas what could be wrong? Regards Max
How can you tell if you have the soft self leveling?
Self Levelling suspension (SLS) Like mine here, does not have a soft or hard mode. It is accumulators. You can raise or lower the height from under the car at an adjustment valve in the centre area. If you want Soft or Hard adjustments, you need a E38 which has the 'S-EDC' BUTTON on dash. It is an electronic system that monitors all 4 dampers (shocks)thru several sensors around the car and will automatically adjust the damping characteristics of the shocks from soft/med/hard...it has nothing to do with raising/lowering the suspension. Cars with S-EDC I think are from 1999 onward, or only on 750il models. If you have S-EDC, it will have wires or cable going thru the top of the shock tower. Look for wires going into the shock tower/dampers from above. www.bimmerboard.com/forums/posts/760091
Hey can you give me the part number of the o-rings? Thanks
I drive a P38 too, only mine is a diesel six one. And i love her!
Well done!!! Not many people drive P38's these days, but it's good to see you still have friends!
Nice work
After replacing the ABS battery on a Range Rover ll p38, is there no need to bleed the brake system?..
I did bleed the brake system afterward. Not sure If I explained that or not, but there is a good video on RUclips by 'Work on P38' guy. I followed his instruction.
Good video! It can help a lot in the future. But I wouldn't use sticky tape as an insulator. Shrink tube with adhesive filling, it will last a long time and will not cause more trouble)
It's rong bro

how accurate do the blocks have to be?
Do you rate this vehicle? They used to be so common here in London, you never see one now, the cheapest one I ever brought was £500 for a 4.6HSE You would struggle to find one now
Ive spent a lot of money and time on parts. Ive had mine for 13years. theres a lot or brittle plastics in my 99 hse. I think they are not built very well with the cosmetics. Its a strong chassis and goes anywhere but a lot can go wrong. Ive done new head gaskets, fuel pump, and the lower ball joints and all airbags. Also had to replace the expenaive sabco brake bulb and sort out the tc issues electrically by cleaning wvery connector in the wiring system as a lot of them corrode. But if you pull all electrics connectors and clean them, a lot of things start to work again. Most need a new fusebox too which are cheap enough. Mine is very reliable now. Ive done a lot to fix it though. My BMW from.same era is a much better built car ane more reliable, plastics have rubber in them and dont break so easily, and the motors are more advanced. The P38 though, is good on tyres and brakes, they last forever. If i had a choice i might lean toward an L322 Range rover with the 4.4 bmw engine because i know how good they are from my 740il and its seemingly built stronger than the P38 (L322).
Of all the air suspension replacement videos I've seen, this was the easiest to understand! Thank you so much! I'm looking forward to more of your maintenance videos!
Thankyou for kind words. I film most of the work I do, and I upload when I feel it could help others get the job done quicker.
Hi mate is it non vanos?
Non vanos. Yes.
Oem e38 atf is brown goldish … it’s only red if you went with maxlife or something
OEM transmission fluid for E38 code is ESSO LT71141 (BMW used ESSO). Any fluid with this code is the correct one, the color of the fluid can be different. If a particular manufacturer of an equivalent long drain LT71141 chooses yellow, red, brown, clear dye, then it is going to look like that. I personally used ESSO LT71141 in a grey packet with red sticker to replace this one. Its available online. It is one of the correct fluids to use. I believe I did that change 3 or 4 years ago but I don't remember exactly. All I know is it is smooth as silk now. I dont recall the color of dye used in the packs which I purchased, but companies do change the color randomly so no point thinking about it. There is a green sticker under the transmission as well as the information in the booklet for this transmission pertaining to exactly as I say, to be correct. The full service history of this particular vehicle did not mention a fluid change ever happening. Whatever the fluid looked like in this video is a document of what the fluid looked like as a result of being nearly 300,000k old.
This helped alot. I got a similar mirror and was concerned about the two wire connector that the p38 has that goes to the 3 in the mirror. Glad i know now that its normal!
Отличная работа! Мне предстоит то же самое
U cant use petrol to flush d converter
Yes. It works well. Petrol dilutes the bad fluid and flushes it out. It then evaporates leaving no residue.
Great theory on this video
No theory. Just document of the job being done, and getting a used transmission installed.
Is that a tree trunk on top of the floor jack??
I believe so. Pieces of wood.
Nice work. What about the oil spillage on the ground...?
I think its just water on a horse riding ring/menage. The red scoria picks up the loose oil if any does spill and i later scoop it into a wheelbarrow with salt in it then dispose of the oil in old oil containers after the salt has dried the oil into clumps.
what about it??? some things just need to get done.
@@averagejoebitcoin nice..
Great video!
what did your replacement come out of? thanks
026053 Magna. also Acura. these 3 wire mirrors were fitted from 99 to 08 in both vehicles i believe. They fit the P38 range rover mount on the windscreen. They are the same chromatic system. Just cut the 3 wires off and solder to the connector from your broken donnelley mirror. Theyre usually around $70-80 US on ebay.
I swapped mine in my garage at home, it’s a lot easier if separate the transfer case from the trans. A lot of these transmissions fail to the transfer case chain skipping.
Great video, thank you. Very helpful 👌

How are you, brother
Thanks so much for this. My 97 is dragging the left rear so I will have to give this a go when I get back home to the car. Notified about your page from the Aussie P38 Facebook site. What size dowell did you use to do this. Looks like a trip to Bunnings coming up!!
Dowell is 20mm. I think a 25mm will also fit inside bumpstop. The 20mm was cheap as I just used a broomstick handle! They seem to hold up ok and dont break.
EXCELLENT very helpful video, THANKS for your time and effort doing it 👍
Done that job twice on my dse, pulled a low mileage unit from a diner truck. Put the doner in and had no drive, I had broken the dogs off the pump installing it. Put it came again and second time was the charm, that is a big unit to wrestle into place while rolling around on the garage floor. Great video. Hope my current p38 doesn’t need a new transmission lol
Thankyou for comment, good read. Glad you fixed it and got lucky getting it going the 2nd time. Too right! converter heavy as hell! laying on back holding it dead centre and jostling about for that elusive click/thud into position. For P38 I recommend new trans filter/ full fluid flush get rid of the metalic bits from years of use clean up what you can in the pan make sure magnet is there as preventative maintenance. I also regreased all the uni joints with a K29 flexigun and did both diff oils at the same time as this box job.
You are a braver man than me👍 love the ingenuity of how you got the box out and in again. Great to see a home mechanic without a lift or pit doing what needs to be done👍👍
Thanks. I guess I like to upload these videos to show you can get things done without the pro gear and space. It builds character that is for sure! The cold beer after a job like this hits that little bit better. Nothing better than pulling off a $5000 job for free.
How It’s Work without gearbox ecu ?
Hello, Yes very good question. I used a 4hp24 which was exactly the same as mine, a 99+ model. I simply removed mine and plugged this one in with my old gearbox ecu. Im guessing it has simply picked up on whats going on immediately, and have not needed to reprogramme it. The box is definately going through all the gears. I thought i would have an issue there with possibility of it only using 3rd gear and in limp mode. But this did not happen. Simple plug and play.
How did you remove the mirror off the windscreen in the first place. Is it just a matter of sliding it down, or do you need a tool to release it.
Just slides down i believe.
Hi .were u order the parts

I am about to do all four of mine so, as you do, I was looking for a real-world video beforehand to help lessen mistakes and frustration along the way. You sir have THE most concise video for this on the internet. Your camera work of each step was superb, especially considering others only talk about certain steps instead of showing them. Thank you for your efforts in producing this tutorial! Cheers!!
Thankyou. I like to document my fixings of auto problems and will upload ones that could help. I do plan on making another one on this subject, to best show resetting of heights using pre-cut metal tubes and placing them in the bumpstops, then dropping the air from the bags Using eassuite and recording those height values, in order to get the calibration settings perfect. And to show how swapping the sensors from one side to the other gives them a whole new life.
