My Favorite Stadium -2025 Rose Bowl- Oregon Selects
There is no better football setting than The Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California. It was an honor to shoot for the University of Oregon. I captured these shots with my Arri Alexa 35, Fujinon 24x zoom, Duclos 11-16mm zoom and Arri Ultra Prime 180mm.

A glimpse into capturing a college football game with an Alexa 35 and a Fujinon UA24x7.8BERD-S10 4K Broadcast Zoom Lens. My first pregame shots were captured with a Tokina 11-16mm PL mod lens from Duclos Lenses. None of these Alexa 35 clips have been color corrected. The camera captures in Arri Log-C4 and I added a Rec 709 LUT in Final Cut Pro.
Arri Alexa 35 College Football Selects - Boise State 2024 - Ashton Jeanty

I was invited to help capture the Boise State Broncos football game as they traveled west to play the San Jose State Spartans on November 16, 2024. The first half of the game I chose to shoot my Fujinon 24x ENG B4 zoom lens with my servo zoom controller mounted to my pan/tilt arm for buttery smooth zooms. The second half of the game I switched to my 300mm Nikon Nikkor PL converted prime lens. I...

Fujinon Duvo HZK 24-300mm Portable PL Zoom Lens - American Football Demo Reel - Alexa 35

Captured with Arri Alexa 35. I believe the Fujinon Duvo HZK 24-300 Portable PL Zoom Lens is one of the greatest sports zoom lens to hit the market in the past decade. The size, weight, aperture, lens mount, sensor coverage all fit very well in my sports documentary work. I will dive deeper into this lens in a future product review. Stay tuned.

I am thoroughly jealous of you, but congrats man!
This came out really good! Love the music! And those shots are 🤌🏻
Great shots Dom! Too bad it wasn't a more compelling game.
Next time!
how did you focus on the ball ... is it manually done? if so wow ... i dont know much about these types of lenses
Yes, all the lenses I own are manual focus lenses. Challenging, but fun. 🤩
DumbdaDP needs a shave and a haircut!
Yo Dom! Great video, does this 400 FD lens essentially turn into an 800mm on the super 35 camera?
600mm 1.5x
Have you used the canon FD 300 f2.8?, I see one at visual products with a 2x extender in good shape but not sure if I’ll regret not getting the 400 instead
300 will be lighter. 400 is a beast and heavy
i have this lens
What frame rate was this shot at
120fps 1080p
@ wow that’s 1080 looks amazing what a awesome camera I’m noticing that nothing else even compares
Found you 4 years later👍🏻 Subbed
Well you can always get the Canon Cine-Servo 50-1000. Just joking, looks great.
Good info. Why all the jump cuts?
Thanks! I get bored while editing.
Are you using the motor for zoom or manual with left hand?
Manual with left fingers.
The NFL makes camera gear?
truly beautiful
Thanks!
Need more!! You are a beast Dom!🔥🔥
Thank you 🙏
So Good, we need game day vlogs!!!
I’d love to do more but my NFL assignments would be tricky since I don’t own the footage nor can I record my own BTS video on the sidelines. If I can shoot more college ball that would make vlogs easier.
awesome stuff! So impressed by how stable your footage is and how the horizon is always level it looks. Seeing this stuff always shows me things that I need to work on!
Thank you! The Alexa 35, similar to my FX3, has a horizon level in the viewfinder. It helps me when shooting handheld to know if I’m level.
What a great way to start the week!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Again proving gear actually matters
Congrats Dom! May I know where did you buy this from?
Arri direct.
What lens and camera was the 1st one shown ?
That was a Sony A7R2 with Fujinon 18-55 e mount zoom
Nice! It was great seeing you today too!
Through of downgrading to an URSA CINE 12K for those kind of jobs or it's just silly to just ask :) ?
My biggest client is the NFL. They rent my Alexa almost weekly when I shoot for them. I have never had a client ask for a BMCC. So in my world the Arri makes sense. Most people don’t have clients that are willing to pay the Arri rental fees. I’m fortunate in that regard.
@ Makes total sense ;-)
love your content!! Trying to work my way up as a sports cinematographer!!
Bro that football throw, pulling focus the whole time while zooming out and moving camera. Some serious skills
Thanks!
Was gonna ask how in the heck do you do that haha
Great shots! Football in slo-mo is exquisite.
Thank you!
Finally
This is outstanding 🙏 Thanks for sharing your professional process and experiences.
Thank you for watching!
Oh nice you got one. I ordered 3 months ago and still no word on if its ever going to ship.
I was in the dark too, until I had a friend receive their set last week. Seems that they are shipping now. I ordered in July.
Ordered back in July, too, and just received the baseplate and receiver at the beginning of last week. Total surprise, as I hadn’t heard anything. I skipped the new top handle, as I kind of like the lightweight one. But I can always add it later, if I want. How do you like it, so far?
The fact that the new top handle slides forward is key for me. Running longer zoom lenses, pushing the MVF forward helps the balance on my shoulder.
@@DomTheDP Glad to see that it's working well for you. I don't run the stock Amira handle, because it couldn't get the VF quite far enough forward for my liking with zooms like the 17-120 & 25-250 and I was worried that the new one for the 35 might be the same. But in your last pic, it looks like it does get it pretty far forward.
Fantastic Dom, how'd your shoulders and back feel at the end of the night. The footage is goergeous.
The 300mm Nikkor is a lot lighter than my 400mm Canon. So it wasn’t too bad. The 400 is a back breaker
Congrats Dom!
Thanks!
Do you find it difficult to zoom and maintain focus with? I jusy rented the 50-135 t1.9 and ive never used a parfocal lens before. The practoce of having to backfocus seems like i just wont have time to mess with that between plays?
On my Fuji zooms, the back focus won’t be touched after it is set. I usually double check back focus on my zooms a couple times per month. Set it and forget it. Now when it comes to following a football play, I typically zoom into the quarterback, set focus and zoom out a bit. As the play develops you will have roll focus as you follow the ball/player. I have developed muscle memory on pulling my own focus over the years. 18 NFL seasons and it’s still a challenge for me.
@@DomTheDP thank you! And in hopes I still have you 🤞 what's you're reccomendation for someone's first time doing this on a cinema lens? Tent (2) tilta follow focuses and put one on the focus and one on the zoom. Or spend an extra $60 to rent the tilta nucleus M and have on hand on the camera and the other hand on the right handle to control zoom and focus?
Depends if your on a tripod or handheld. I use a follow focus and a zoom motor when I’m on a tripod or hi-hat. If handheld I do everything by hand. Zoom and focus with my left fingers.
@DomTheDP awesome! You are the man. Thank you. I think I'll just grab a follow focus then since I'll be on a monopod.
Were those close-up, slo-mo ball in the air shots manual focus?! Didn’t see you fall out once! 😵
All manual, yep
Hey Dom, this footage is incredible. Thank you so much for sharing. Do you have a budget servo lens or zoom lens recommendation for filming football? 1-2k budget
Photo lenses are the cheapest but I’m not a fan of using photo glass for football. Some video shooters use photo lenses well. I would search for older B4 2/3” ENG zoom lenses from Fuji or Canon. (i.e. 20x, 22x, 23x)
@@DomTheDP Thank you!!
The shot versatility is crazy. I’m not used to seeing those shallow dof wide portraits in the beginning and the dynamic game play footage with the same lens. Would love to use this for doc work. Will this be your new go to for football?
Eventually yes, but I still get use/rentals from my 20-120 and 24x zooms. Ideally I’d love to have the new 14-100 Duvo and 24-300 Duvo in my kit.
Looks amazing. Can never afford that.
Definitely pricey
So awesome dom! Keep them videos coming!
Thanks!
One of the most beautiful examples of video I've ever seen!
Thank you
Which camera body????
Alexa 35
Great shots Dom 😊👌, Fujinon would have to be super happy to have such great examples of footage with their new Duvo too.
Hi what is the Email address please
1-On the first 2 minutes of the video ,when you say that you are behind the line of scrimmage up to the 50 yard line or so, are you on a hi hat or on a shoulder rig ? 2- I tried to shoot a hi school game last night on a hi hat (benro 100mm bowl with video head and red Komodo rig) and carrying the camera package with a hi hat was not easy , especially with so many people on the sidelines ) . Trying to understand how is the dynamic there between shoulder mounts and hi hats shots. Or if you use the hi hat only for stable line of scrimmage shots and details etc.
When I made this video I was solely speaking about handheld, shoulder mounted camera positioning. But some of the same concepts make sense for hi-hat usage too. I primarily shoot off a hi-hat if I'm only shooting 24fps assignments. I'll shoot all handheld for slow motion assignment, with some exceptions.
That camera is beautiful. I'm waiting for my stock picks to go up 20x so that i can buy a brand new Arri Alexa.
That is a job well done. That take a lot of effort. Good job! Excellent sound choice.
Thanks for posting this, Dom! There's so little information on camera gear once you approach the top. I bought a RED V-Raptor X at the beginning of this year, and it's wonderful, but the Alexa 35 has me really drooling as well. What a marvel of engineering. Thanks for sharing your joy and your toys.
One day 🥲
Hello im new here thanks a lot for this video ❤ Just a small question i have canon 5d mark 4 and 24-70mm can i cover a mini footbal game (just photos )
Most photographers I see on the sidelines use a 24-70 for their wide shots. Most also carry a 70-200 and a 400mm prime as their football 3 lens set. Check out Brett Carlsen's page for sports photo content www.youtube.com/@BrettCarlsen
