Cantering the Tight-Backed Horse with Diamante
In an effort to release tightness in the back, some horses will buck, or pull on the contact, fling their necks around, etc.
This can be especially challenging for the rider in the canter. In this video, JJ shows us how to focus on stabilizing ourselves and remaining neutral, so we can encourage the horse to “pull his neck out of his body” and use his core to loosen the back, without pulling or bucking.

It’s called a riding sport not a horsing sport. That’s because we need to learn to ride, where horses already know how to horse. The riding position is not a natural one to us - we have to work at it. Add to that modern daily life and we are often getting on our horses stiff and unbalanced. This week, JJ shows us a simple but effective handful of exercises that you can do every ride to help you...

I appreciate the explanation of proper technique. It’s very helpful.
I think she’s just showing the doffrence in how your seat affects your horse don’t jump on her back we’ve all horsed arround to see what works
That was a very annoying way to teach
Such a good boy🤍
Best sound in the world!❤
So what’s the point? Loosening up the core is uncomfortable for the horse?
Loosened core means you will shift more in your hips atop the saddle which the horse feels against his spine. Using your abs to hold a strong core makes your seat and hips move with his movement holding still in the saddle so he feels the weight dispersed throughout the saddle.
Is it the same with Western saddels, or is it just with English saddels.
@@Its_ur_bestie_33 great question! Unfortunately though I do not know the answer. I'm only familiar with English riding saddles and this style of riding shown in video which is typically for events such as jumping and dressage.
Behind the vertical
And agitated the whole time, too
Also driving just waaayyy to aggressively with her hips when she thought she was doing good. Smh.
@@naomisears2802watch the horses ears in the beginning of the video, do you see how they are moving back and forth relaxed with his gate? And then compare that to when she relaxes her core and lets her seat go, do you notice how his ears got rigid, and he lost his fluidity? And he also go heavier in his shoulder when she let go with her abs. Which is also when you saw the horse go more behind the vertical. However, the point was not the horse falling behind the vertical and his posture. The whole point is how your seat and aids effects the horse their movement, and there overall demeanor and willingness to stay connected with you as a ride.
Perfect- I have horse that does that! Thanks
I feel the horse that I practice with is so fast when trotting. Is it because I did not sufficiently squeeze my thighs? would you mean squeezing the knees do not steer the horse, instead this can tell the horse to slow down? thanks
❤️🐎❤️🐎❤️🐎❤️🐎❤️🐎❤️🐎
This is exactly what my horse does! Great timing on this video popping up in my feed. I’ve been working on the halt/rein back randomly whilst hacking out because he’s usually quite relaxed on hack days.
Love that you do such great training the is thinking of the fair welfare of the horse
Love it so much!!!
Heals down. Let the horse's body move your hips. Relax.
Like this a lot.
I can't believe I didn't know about you until last night. I've ridden on and off for over sixty years and I cannot abide the shift in equestrian sports from intimate partnership to cheap entertainment. I can't even recognize "modern" competitive dressage as dressage of the classical school. I'm not at all surprised by the current scandal. Horses are being pushed too young. Riders have weird seats and hard hands, and the horses don't look like flexion and balance are centered. I've never had the financial capacity to own or share board, but I would give almost literally anything to be able to train with someone like you who understands equestrian sports are centered on the equine rather than the rider and audiences looking to be entertained. It's an uphill battle against current fashion, and I'm grateful you are standing for our beautiful sport and the brilliant creatures who make it possible.
Omg! Love this, thank you!
So cool! Thank you!
I love how practical you are!
Gorgeous horse! I learn so much from your videos! Thank you!
Maybe adding getting rid of the ELITE horse people who think they are better than the average trail rider. Its so sad seeing these young girls looking down on others. I know mommy and daddy are paying for EVERYTHING yet they feel the pedestal they're on is way above others! I am a farrier and see it constantly!!
Looks amazing! Very nice riding style

What a remarkable video. Thank you JJ for your courage and generosity in sharing your experience with us in this difficult time. Your positivity and compassion for horses is truly inspiring. Your advice is gold.
Good timing on this, as I’m just starting to work on canter pirouettes! Thank you for sharing these excellent tips!
Thank you. I am going to try this.
I love that. “Am I on the bit? Am I balanced? Am I supple?” Before we expect our horse to be those things. Thank you!
This is so much better than a lot of dressage riders! A more natural head set. Looks so pretty
Thank you!
Beautifully done!!
This sounds interesting but it's hard to follow
From what I recall, Bridging Reins was a standard and still is for riding racing Thoroughbreds. We used to set the bridge on the neck to avoid pulling(which means GO in that world) and to help balance if sky riding. I have never heard of Dressage using such a method and found this interesting because it does keep one centered and balanced, although utilized bit differently for Dressage riding.
It works GREAT!
Yes! Also, luv that I don't have polo wraps wound all the way up under their knees...what is with that !?
“Collect, collect, forward, ask” - I like that. And thinking about the changes as just another canter stride. Thanks.
I just came across this video in 2024, and I am extremely impressed. Your methods are wonderful! ❤
Awesome warm-up tips! ❤
Glad you like them!
Awesome! ❤
Great video! ❤
The words competitive and dressage should not appear together in the same sentence.
Let's discuss: Good vs. Great.
So encouraging to hear this point of view.
I really enjoyed hearing this, classical riders do need to compete to be ambassadors for the horse and other riders . When I watch your videos on RUclips it is so encouraging and they make me think alot about the horse and myself riding.
Ugh. I stopped watching after you can't even walk a stride without jabbing him with spurs.
I just love this! The actual exercise, and the encouragement to ride better rather than get after the horse for any imperfections in the execution.
I’m just starting to get that feeling of my horse really coming under the body and freeing up the front end. He’s a big warmblood/TBx and has lovely paces, but can get a bit like a freight train dragging you on the shoulder. My timing isn’t always the best with keeping the left hind coming. He is also extremely offended by too much rein contact. Do you have any tips on getting my timing better and what exactly the hands should be doing in that moment of half half? I tend to give a little squeeze with the inside rein and then soften as I put the leg on to ask the left hind for more. Thanks so much for your helpful videos!
Hi! This is a BIG question without a simple answer (dressage in a nutshell LOL) But, this is why we created the Academy, so you could find answers! The entire Connection category would be helpful to you - there are over 25 videos there and I think for you specifically, the Helga videos could be interesting as well as any of the Straightness, Lateral Work & Suppleness videos. As for your timing, it's a matter of learning to feel it. It can be helpful to have a friend call out which hind leg is coming off the ground so you start to learn to feel that and can aid in time. In all of JJ's videos she calls out when to aid so again, those videos mentioned, as well as all of the others in the Academy, would help. Lastly, watch the full-length video you can find here on YT on Posting Trot and Half Halts with Gideon, there is some info on what to do with the hands in that one. Hope that helps!
@@TeamTateDressage thank you so much! I will definitely check that out!

Fascinating story. I've always wondered about the logistics of flying horses & I enjoyed hearing about some of the background detail. I loved to hear the vigilance you invest in caring for all the aspects of their health. And I loved that you finished up with a homage to the trust & generosity of our magnificent equine friends & acknowledged that you have worked thru some guilt over the travelling. Makes me think you must be, above all the knowledge & skill, a good woman at heart too!! And what a full exciting life you lead. Hello from down town here at The Mornington Peninsula, outside of Melbourne, Vic, Australia! Oh the beauty of sharing your story from far far away! Thankyou ❤
Thank you so much! My horses' health and well-being are my top priority. Hello from Wellington, Florida, USA!

Thank you!!
Great exercise! I’ll give it a go. Thank you ❤
Nice exercise, thank you for sharing!
