ESCAPE FROM THE PLANET OF THE APES (1971), which segued into CONQUEST OF THE PLANET OF THE APES (1972) and BATTLE FOR THE PLANET OF THE APES (1973) and a short-lived television series. Then there was an animated series that aired on Saturday mornings that, as it turns out, was much more faithful to Pierre Boulle’s novel MONKEY PLANET.
The Mississippi ride was fun. The tour guide would tell all these stupid corny jokes. It was a simpler time. Injun Joe's cave was fun in its many incarnations. They had staff inside the ride that would shine a flashlight on you if you were groping your date too much. I had plenty of good times in that building.
This video brings back old memories of six flags
The pictures brings me back to my youth.
Lots of memories, Miss those times . 👍🏻👍🏻
My memories of 70s
While i have no memory of any of this due to me being born in the early 2000s, it is nice to see what the park looked like back in the day when my parents visited it as kids. I wish they kept the different themed sections though. But, the company probably gets a lot of money from DC Comics for naming rides after their characters, keeping them in business. So, I guess I'll take it. Although Injun Joe's Cave would definitely not exist today, as the term "injun" has become a lot more derogatory over the years, and from what my mom has described of it, it featured numerous Native American stereotypes. (I MISS THE BUMBERCARS!!!!! 😭 And I dont even like the Boomerang that much. Huge downgrade. This park has so many childhood memories of mine.)
Oh, the Octopus. When I was about 7 or 8 year old (1979-ish), the girl went to slam it shut and slammed the door on my ankle. Lots of ice on my leg throughout the day but being an excited kid at Six Flags, I soldiered on.
Six Flags St Louis Eureka Missouri
They called it mid America 🤣🤣
Went there not long after it opened, a couple years at least before The Screaming Eagle. Haven't been since '83, 40 years ago.

Very cool video. Thanks for sharing.
I was born in 1976 and have great memories of being a kid in the 80's; walking through the park hearing Madonna on the P.A., the smell of all of the treated timber baking in the hot sun, neon clothes. The Jet Scream was a right of passage for kids. Once you conquered that, you were in the big leagues. Great video. Brought back all of these memories and more.
then you're old enough to remember the parking lot tram, the picnic areas in the parking lot, and the train robberies.
4:30 movie bumper was from 1968.
😍😍😍😍🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩
Nope from the 70s (1972-1983)
I was there many times in the early days. Injun Joes cave was a way to cool off in the heat.
Every time I smell tea tree oil, it reminds me of the musty mildew smell of Injun Joes cave.
I loved Injun Joe's Cave. A shame they got rid of it 😢
And they got rid of the Mississippi Adventure boat ride too. 😢
No pictures or video from HOODOOS MAGIC EMPORIUM near the mine train?????
THEY NEED TO BRING THIS BACK
Ive got some old (8mm) video of six flags mid America from the mid 70 my dad shot.... it shows the sky way, the Mississippi Adventure ride, Moon Antique Cars, Super Sports Car Ride, The parachute ride, the log ride, an actual show in the palace, and some of the old kid park with the kids roller coaster and air planes, and other stuff... The park used to be so nice and magical back then, it looks like total trash now and lost its magic a long long time ago... One thing nobody hardly talks about (my favorite ride) The Time Tunnel. One a side note I remember going to the Haunted House there back in the early/mid 80's.. also remember riding the Condor which was only there for a short time in 1988.. Seen Frankie Valli, The Beach Boys in Concert there with my parents. I used to ride the Mine Coaster on the old good track in the early/mid 80's.. we would ride it over and over, it was so much better than the other track., I was there a day before they opened the standing roller coaster, they were still doing test runs on it. I remember when the Jet scream first opened, I was on a field trip and we drove past it in the bus, all the kids ran to the windows in awe at it. I remember the little remote control model boats, tanks, and cars that were by the Jet Scream that you could put a quarter in and control. Another thing people rarely talk about it Thunder River... I remember when it first opened, I remember seeing it on the news. Ive seen so many changes thru the years, all for the worse.
It's lost its magic, since when? A lot of the rides wouldn't be as popular today, while it is try thing's have been abandoned in some areas I don't think any of the magic is gone I think maybe you've just reached the point where you're starting to see things change and because you were there and experienced the version that it was when you were there in the past how it looks now is obviously different so you don't think it's as good. I think it's just a classic situation where your brain doesn't like something when it changes, it doesn't look like crap actually it looks almost exactly the same but obviously modernized and a lot of this stuff is still here surprisingly I mean the main mall area hasn't really changed at all and a lot of the old buildings are just being used for new things now. Back then the main focus was looking flashy and sparkly and pretty nowadays it's just about looking fun and exciting nobody these days really cares about and advertisement anymore.
The Time Tunnel was so rad. Just dark, eerie with laser and strobe lights screwing up your senses. It also had a certain smell that has stuck with me. Man, I miss that ride.
I didn't like the Time Tunnel because it replaced Injun Joe's Cave.
The park was so much better back in the day.
Was better and looked better. So much cleaner and nicer.
Everything was better then
We always laughed because arriving at the park and getting inside, the first thing you came to going either direction was a "drive the car" ride. We had just spent about 50 minutes driving to get to the park. LOL
LOL That's true. I never thought about that at the time.
The NBC Saturday Night Movie theme during the mid-to-late sixties and early seventies was really great intro music too. But I can't seem to find it anywhere.....
Great video, but with one issue. Some of the photos in the comparison portion at the end are out of date. For one, the ticket booths at the front gate were taken out in 2020 and the Villains Cafe became JB's smokehouse a few years back.
A few years ago, I randomly found a banged up souvenir penny that actually had “Six Flags Over Mid-America” instead of the park’s current name, “ Six Flags St. Louis.”
What a find!
One minor detail that I believe you left out. When you rode the train back in day was it going in the opposite direction as it is today? At one point I think they flipped the train direction and based on your video it looked to be the case.
Yeah the park used to do that every few years. They haven't since the 90's though.
@@stlouisrocker100 oh really? That’s very interesting. That’s a lot of effort getting a crane out to rotate each car. I think that would be interesting to ride the train the opposite way today however I bet the reason why they haven’t done it since is because a couple of the crossing gates in the park are manually operated at each of the stations.
The HANNIBARRELS were named THE DRUNKEN BARRELS at SIX FLAGS OVER GEORGIA. RIVER KING MINE TRAIN was called DAHLONEGA MINE TRAIN. And, LOG FLUME was called LOG JAMBOREE - we had two different LOG JAMBOREES. SKY CHUTER was called THE GREAT GASP. ADVENTURES ON THE MISSISSIPPI was named JOHN RIVAULT'S BOAT RIDE. And, the old cars were named HANSOM CARS. never knew they were all called anything else, so, thanks for the info. 😉
Thank you!!!
9:45... My God. I can smell that picture.
