How to stay safe on a day hike

How to stay safe on a day hike is a question I often see in social media groups. Safety concerns should not prevent you from enjoying a day hike in nature but there are certain basics to get right in order to stay safe. I stay safe by being prepared, having the right equipment and maintaining good fitness. Day hikes are a great thing to do in order to train for longer hikes but it's easy to for...

Why I Hike Alone

In this video, I explain why I hike alone. A lot of people are reluctant to go out into nature on their own but it's one of my favourite things to do. With that wind, I'd be keeping well away from the edge at Lincoln's Rock. No protective edge there, for the very good reason that not only would the rock be irreparably damaged, but the view itself would be broken. There's a similarly good view from McMahon's Lookout, but the fence there does not interrupt it. There is a very steep and dramatic drop on one of the pathways - it's not a place for young children.

    What's amazing about the Wolgan Valley is that you're driving through typical central ranges country, such as that around Hartley and Oberon, you go through a bit of a gap, and then there's nothing in front of you. The road just drops away and you're driving down the side of a cliff with a magnificent view across the valley opening up in front of you.

    My father grew up at Lithgow in the 1920's, and he, his brother and their mates spent quite a bit of time walking along the Plateau and nearby areas. I have a recollection of his saying that once they walked along the line to Newnes and were met there to be driven back. That would have been late '20's to mid 30's. In the 50's and 60's, he took us to the valley and also to some of the line on the plateau.

    I used have a unit at Cremorne Point, a short walk from Old Cremorne wharf, which was the one we used, and a bit longer to Cremorne Point. The ferry trip to and from work was very pleasant, especially that home. By the time the ferry had left the wharf at the Point, all the unpleasantness of the day's work had vanished. I also recall a swim not long after dawn in the pool at the Point one New Year's Day, but am making no admissions.

    As a local you can drive your car to the glow worm tunnels from Lithgow or at Clarence not sure why they told you at the info centre that it was 4wd.. it does get very bumpy when it rains because of the traffic on the road as it is very popular with 4wds as there is a lot of off road tracks up the drift etc.

    • @delphinelesterlost3285
      @delphinelesterlost3285 Год назад

    I finally got the opportunity to do this walk last May and it was such a beautiful walk. Only regret I have is that I didn’t complete the entire walk on the day that I did it - I had to turn back 2.5km from the end due to needing to pick up my kids from school that day, but I plan in the next few months to try this walk again and this time complete the trail. I still won’t make the leap on to Hanging Rock though - I’m scared of falling through the crack; I’ll just do the fire trail up to Baltzer Lookout.

    I definitely agree with you. Hiking alone means that you can go at your own pace. When I was hiking with other people some of them would complain if I couldn’t keep up with them (I’ve just recently started hiking again) so I feel that if I’m alone I can go at my own pace. It’s also peaceful too especially if you’re in the bush. I too have anxiety and depression and I find that walking and/or hiking helps me a lot. I love watching your hiking videos - the scenery of the walks, whether coastal, in the bush or in the city, are just beautiful ❤

This backpack easily fit my 14" laptop, but does not have any protection, so you may hit notebook parts when lay backpack unsuccessfully down - be sure to put some laptop protection cover before carry on (it may be just a piece of textile). I spent literally years exploring/fishing, swimming that creek. I have lived in Wahroonga for 50 years. back in the 80's we'd explore the creek every weekend, even more so during floods etc. that was my backyard for my entire junior years.,.... Very informative. One more tip... If you have to descend a steep hill for some reason like having to get off a trail because of some obstacle, shorten one pole to it's shortest length and leave the other one at it's longest. Climb down said hill sideways with the short pole behind you as an anchor point and the long one in front of you as a prober so that you'll be stepping down on sure ground and gosh forbid you lose traction, the rear pole acts as a catch.
