    I'm a 90s kid. I wasn't too familiar with Madonna's earliest stuff until recently. I was really surprised how long she's been in the game. I bought Like a Virgin and her first album on cd. Not exactly what I expected, lol during her ray of light era. But I really enjoyed both on vinyl. I enjoy her first album more. But I was quite impressed with her Dress You Up and ShopbeeDoo vinyl single. Very cool songs. The last half on vinyl was good. I enjoyed this.

    The verse in MG is “no way “ to her little gay pal . It was also in her dressing room as they are playing a game of cards . Funny enough the black crucifix that is dangling in her ear ,she wore again at a birthday party in 89 ‘ with Warren Beatty .

    The hip-hop Madonna that showed herself intermittently circa 1990-1994 was "my" Madonna. I feel like 1994 was her last good year; then she had a kid and her music went to boring generic pointless electronica and became progressively more insufferable. But Justify My Love, Erotica, Secret - she was actually right there with Mary Blige and Mariah and others who pioneered signing over heavy hip-hop beats.

    This remains my favorite M album and Over and Over is her most underrated song that should be her biggest anthem. Talk about Zeitgeist. Liberty gets it! Like a Virgin and Material Girl most definitely do not sound dated or 80’s. They are timeless classics. The only songs that sound dated on that album are Pretender (the line “like fish that got away” particularly) and Stay with that dated programmed drum machine roll down overload and poor lyrics “then we can scoodle bee bop what? The rest of the album is timeless and features her most underrated masterpiece and zeitgeist song which basically predicts and encapsulates what was to come Over and Over!! Why isn’t that song bigger I do not know. The lyrics and energy are sick. “I’m not afraid to say I hear a different beat…” come on!! Who sang about such stuff in 1984? No one! Also Angel please! Dress You Up of course I agree is magic mainly because of that virgin tour opening. Also Love Don’t Live Here Anymore was such a masterful performance. Haunting and absolutely beautiful in retrospect even though it wasn’t my favorite as a kid because her voice was too real and deep for me at the time . I went through the exact experience as Liberty buying the album for Into The Groove and being so disappointed when it wasn’t on there. The version of Into The Groove included later is Madonna’s at her most incredible. The synthesizer bass on that track is partly responsible for Madonna’s rise. By the way the reason why this is the last album where she’s not credited in all songs is because she wasn’t as powerful before duh! Not because she started writing the songs🙈. The guy in Material Girl isn’t gay, he’s hitting on her. This was when she had all these guys with hard ons around her. No gay best friend whatsoever at that point. Also Shoo Bee Doo is neither a Motown reference nor is it her calling her lover or sex that, it’s just Shoo Bee Doo like Shoop Shoop or something.

    I have a random question, with all the artists selling their catalogs, 1) does Madonna own her catalog and 2) what do we think her catalog is worth? I’m sure, she’ll never sell, but really curious what it’s worth is.😮

    • @cosmefulanitoo2625
      @cosmefulanitoo2625 13 дней назад

      She told Variety some time ago about selling her catalog like other artists... "They're my songs. Ownership is everything isn't it?"... suggested there's no amount of cash large enough for her catalog to be handed off. Taking into account that Like a Prayer cannot even be used/licenced in different audiovisual media as Ryan Reynolds said and they need the permission of Madonna herself and not a record company, I think it goes without saying that she is still the owner of everything.

    Like a Virgin. The album where I fell in love with her, but looking back, I can only listen to about half of it. Virgin, Angel, Over and Over, LDLHA and Dress You Up are fire… most of the rest are skips. If I never have to hear Material Girl again I will be happy. The video is iconic, the song is trash. And then ShooBeeDoo and Pretender are just no’s for me. I feel like the GenX fans like me are usually very nostalgic for 80s Madonna. I get it… it was a peak in terms of her celebrity and sort of ubiquity in popular culture, but I don’t think she hit her creative peak era until Erotica. Everything else before it was fire hits and then a lot of questionable album tracks… for me, at any rate. I see the growth in each successive album, but Erotica was her first really cohesive album… funny that’s when she started really taking heat and being told her career was ‘over’ when really it was just the beginning of her artistic brilliance.

    Looking at the arc of her iconic artistry, and my own Catholic background, I’ve come to view (‘84) Like A Virgin with a deeper significance in her messaging and advocacy, and the influence of her Catholic upbringing. Catholic theology is full of opposing, co-existing dogma: saint and sinner, sacred and profane, heaven and hell, angels and demons, and so on. I think she decided early on that her artistry would portray a secular, liberated, outspoken, irreverent, militant version to her namesake and original religious icon, the Madonna or the Virgin Mary, the Queen of Angels and Martyrs, who was portrayed as meek, pious, chaste and completely obedient to patriarchy (to her God the Father, her husband Joseph, and to Christ her son). The artist Madonna-in her advocacy/activism for women empowerment, minority rights and social justice-chose to be inspired by the more militant heroines in Judeo-Christian history: Judith who slew and beheaded the Assyrian general Holofernes to save the Hebrews; Esther the Jewish princess who saved her people in Persia; and St Joan of Arc who led the French army against the English during the Hundred Years’ War in the medieval period. Where her LAV versions are more sexual, lusty and erotic, her (‘89) Like A Prayer which I consider a sort of sequel to LAV, is more spiritual but still with a dose of racial justice activism, sensuality and eroticism. From the moment she came down those stairs amid a haze in her opening Virgin Tour (‘85) wearing an astral jacket, her eyes gleaming like little stars, decked with earrings and pendants of crucifixes, crosses and a rosary as necklace, with an aura radiating charisma-this secular, modern Madonna has embarked on her journey, which would come full circle 40 years later in the opening of her (2023-24) Celebration Tour when she appeared on that revolving circular stage, like earth, amidst haze and smoke as if coming through that huge overhead cosmic ring/time tunnel, after a near death experience, this time garbed in a black satin robe with crosses in embroidered sequins, wearing a halo crown of twinkling crystals-this time evoking the symbolic image of a true iconic Queen of pop music and culture. ❤ this 40th anniversary coverage of LAV.😊

    This unimaginable and never repeated 'FEVER PERIOD' of 84/85 belonging to Madonna was much, much more than any calculated album roll out which is common practice now and appeared later in Madonna's career with the Sex book, the Erotica album and the film Body of Evidence. More than the album Like a Virgin this 'FEVER PERIOD' placed Madonna into myth status by standards we as a society may never see again simply from how organic the seeds were sown. No one expected Penthouse and Playboy to be releasing her early art house nudes around the monumental Live Aid performance that Madonna participated in. Already was her myth cemented that without shame she owned it and performed three songs that were not even on the Like a Virgin album although the album was still officially in its release cycle. Andy Warhol even created the Madonna: I'm not ashamed art and her origin story as the original unapologetic bitch officially arrived on earth. This was perhaps the only time Madonna wasn't in full control of her roll out and to this day it still remains her best roll out to date. Sure, we have seen beyond her control album leaks and other what nots occurring later in her career but it was this moment that had ***Greek Myth Origin Story***that few others ever witness nor are granted. Thanks Stefan, Liberty, Ben, and Tony for MLVC and all that you do. I have always wanted to comment and finally I have reason. Inside secret, I actually call this time the Madonna jacket period. We got her pyramid jacket, her Virgin Tour jacket and the Live Aid jacket. Side note, Madonna has also saved my life and I'm sure many more and I would love to see you pursue other survival stories from your MLVC fans! Keep up the great work!!
