I got one used for $150 and it works great. Definitely good enough for me to relive my vinyl days even though the Technics table I had when I was kid was probably better
A respectable 'poor man's' Technics emulator.....well done.
How do you accurately grade a record if it's full of dust covering the vinyl?
I have a handful of Ukrainian and Latvian soviet LPs. Some of the folk music is great fun
I hadn’t thought of cleaning the outer jackets, with the art and all. I definitely have some album covers needing cleaning.
Laminated covers can be wiped quite hard with Windex but I found it better to go gently with plain card ones as the inks aren't always stable. Good luck.
My vinyl vac has a hole maybe 2 inches past the felt that goes over the spindle or bolt in your case. I wonder why yours doesn't?
Mine does too. I don't use it though as the hole steals suction from the slit.
Interesting! I'll try it your way next time! I clean similarly to you, but after using the cleaning solution I vacuum it up, the spray again with just distilled water and use a new brush just foe water, and then vacuum again. This may be a better rinse. Cleaning really does save so many great records. Good luck and happy hunting!!
It does make such a big difference. I have lately experimented with taping the hole shut. You can feel the pull of the stronger suction from the slit.
I use "Formula 409" spray cleaner to clean the sleeves with great success. Seems to be a bit more gentle than Windex on the ink printing.
Thanks for the tip. Windex can be surprisingly harsh.
Thank you for the tips!
Thanks for watching!
I had a massive haul of over 250 vinyl LPs last year for free after a friend's neighbour passed away. Some dated back to the late 60s and it was clear that they'd never been cleaned properly as the surface noise was horrendous. I bought a Spincare cleaning kit and the results were dramatic to say the least. One of The Moody Blues LPs was a constant cacophony of clicks and pops before cleaning, and almost completely silent between tracks afterwards. I'm still working my way through them and finding the odd gem.
That's some haul and not from a close source! I did research the Spincare system and saw that it gets very good reviews. My own system while a bit basic certainly gets the job done nicely for me. The vacuum stage is the key. I've also been using a 'plasma lighter' to combat statyic cracks with good successs. There are many useful videos on that method.
The Rachmaninoff/Cliburn was recorded in 1960; Turnabout was a subsidiary of the Vox label.
I would recommend a natural bristle brush over the carbon fibre, also 409 cleans the jackets well, and doesn't tend to remove the inks.
Discovered your channel purely by accident and am liking it. Great alternative to our USA election news. Anyway, heard you mentioning using your carbon fiber brush. I started using a manual record washer which gets a lot of the dirt off. Surprisingly, hand-washing with Dawn dish soap gets the rest of job done (well enough for me, anyway). I'm careful around the middle label - haven't had any damage yet. Anyway, keep up the good work - great entertaining channel.
Hello there. I'm glad to provide some alternative viewing! I have recently posted videos of how I wash and vacuum my vinyl acquisitions. It is a bit of a palaver but the vacuuming phase definietly helps. One of those spacers you get in towers of blank CDs is a handy sized label protector. Thanks for watching.
Soviet records have a peculiarity that even when they look like brand new, they create a noticeable crackle when played, even after washing. And some play normally. Perhaps it depends from the specific plant and the primary quality of the plastic. If you bought Soviet records from Germany, most likely these records were exported, their quality is much better than those sold inside the USSR
Perhaps I have just been lucky. There is no serious noise on the many examples I have bought over the past few months. I am sure the pressing plant has a bearing on this. The East German Eterna label seems always reliable too as does the Czech Supraphon label. The finding and collecting is all part of the experience isn't it!
@Perfectvirgo yes, in other equal conditions I prefer East German 'Amiga' and 'Eterna', Yugoslavian 'Yugoton' and RTB, Czech 'Supraphon', Slovak 'Opus'. Hungarian 'Pepita' and 'Artisjus' also good. Romanian 'Electrecord', Bulgarian 'Balkanton' and Soviet 'Melodia' are considered slightly worse than previous labels
@@Perfectvirgothere are some signs of better quality Melodiya plates. Dark blue or black label on the plate is the main. Such labels were put on the export series (better material and first presses, better quality control) and were highly valued inside USSR. Also you can check for the exact factory where the plate was produced. Апрелевский and Ленинградский are decent. MOZG (московский опытный завод грамзаписи) is the best
Oh. Red label is okay. Pink and white usually the cheapest ones
Enjoying your interest in Melodiya records. The only bad thing is the horrible inner sleeves. They are quite capable of causing scuff marks and are the worst kind of sleeve.
Thank you. I replace the inner sleeves as I go and I am pleased to say that this latest consignment is in remarkable condition.
A little over thirty years ago I put some Nokian Haktapaca studded snow tires on my cyclocross bike. It had plenty of clearance for a 700×38 out back and a 700×32 up front. Made biking in the winter much safer. I stop ending up on my but . Rode them until we got a heavy rain in spring to clear the leftover sand . That first ride in spring with my cyclocross tubulars was amazing.
I think it's great that we find ways to keep riding in winter. I won't venture out when there is snow but I can suffer the cold down to about -8c. The city plows and salts our bike/pedestrian paths so ice isn't usually an issue. At 25mm I'm nearingo the width limit on my old steel frame. Ride safely!
You ought to think about an ultrasonic tank cleaner for your records, they're all China sourced of course and therefore very inexpensive, here in the States they are around $200 either from Amazon or eBay. Mine is the Vevor. You run 1-6 records at a time in distilled water with a little surfactant (like a film cleaner), and you still have to rinse the records after they've been rolling in the tank, as it only loosens the crud - but WOW what an amazing improvement over washing at the sink. A sponge or brush can't dig at the microscopic level like an ultrasonic tank can. That low-level "ants chewing paper" sound can be entirely eliminated.
Thanks for your thoughts. I have indeed researched ultrasonic cleaners. The entry level Vevor is C$400 here and others range from 4-800. My washing and vacuuming system may be a bit primitive but I've found it to be surprisingly effective. Maybe at some future stage.
It's always a thrill to find good records, thrifting ! Glad you did.. I have consistently done well in my region here in Northern Nevada for the past 20 plus years.. Good hunting 🎵
The thrill of the chase is a big part of the experience. Many expeditions end up fruitless but when you stumble across a gem... the satisfaction is real! There are not too many opportunities in out-of-the-way Prince Edward Island but it does throw up some unusual finds.
We'd love to visit Eastern Canada someday ! I agree on the thrifting. I started in 2001. Our band was no more, and it filled a big gap left from not rehearsing and playing live anymore. I still find inexpensive records ( 50 cents to 2.00 USD ) here in Reno / Sparks
@@jtsrecordroom3963 A fantastic substitute wehn the real thing is no more. If we travel off PEI I make a point of 'hunting' in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick!
Awesome ! Good luck out there in the real wild as I like to call thrifting and digging !
As regards the plasma lighter. does the lighter need to be on when you remove the static?. Probably a silly question. Enjoying your enthusiasm for Russian records, comrade.
Yes it does need to be on but you hold the terminal end (wihere the blue charge leaps across) a good two inches above the surface of the vinyl. I 'zap' with the rcord balanced on my hand but I've seen people use their turntable. After getting reacquainted with Tchaikovsky I started exploring other noneteenth century Russians. Then, seeking out Melodiya label issues was a natural progression.
@@Perfectvirgo Thanks for the advice about the lighter. I probably will not wave it anywhere near my cartridge. I recently got a Melodiya record of an obscure, but world-class female violinist. The Russians train more world-class players than any other country. Anyway, this record was issued with nine different sleeve designs. All of them were interesting and eye-catching. Russia would be my ideal place to go shopping for vinyl.
@@heifetz14 Yes I'd go there too, in a heartbeat. I have around 20 LPs on the Melodiya label and lots on the East German Eternia label. All are great quality and the orchestral playing is sublime.
From Pennsylvania, thrift stores used to charge $1-5 a piece 15 years ago, now with demand, even ruined records can go for $30 at my local thrift. Although I love the fact that most of them do not know what they are selling and you can get a great lp worth $80, for $15. Although I only leave with one or two nowadays.
Those are steep prices. We only have 2 thrift stores on PEI; one charges C$2.99 regardless of condition the other charges $1 for rock and 50c for classical. I do browse there but typically most LPs are scratched. Finding the occasional gem which makes the hunt worthwhile.
A lot of smartphones have a function of photo translation. This application on first screen of smartphone.
I have an iPhone 15 and was not aware this was available. I've just tested it on some Cyrillic text and it's like magic! Thank you for this great piece of advice.
Great video! Love that compilation box set I want to get more into classical, lately I have done good at my local thrift shops, got queens news of the world and David Bowies diamond dogs on vinyl
Thanks! It's a beautiful collection of some of the most important symphonies and beautifully recorded on Deutsche Grammophon. C$3! Great finds there! Ihave been a lifelong Bowie and Queen fan and have the earlier releases on vinyl. The track Rebel Rebel is terrific.
I love opening new stuff😂
All part of the overall experience isn't it!
The problem I find with classical music is there are too many quiet parts which really show up the imperfections in vinyl they really have to be pristine to be listenable. CD all the way for classical vinyl for rock 🤘🏻
I quite agree. CDs revolutionized the listening experience. People have many reasons for persisting with vinyl, not least the wide dynamic range which you mentioned. CDs don't have that to the same extent. Nonetheless collecting vinyl is probably more than just listening, it's the hunt, the find, the obsessive washing, static elimination etc etc!!
Forgive my incomplete detective work, indeed this is quite a find. Just the Markevich, but Bohm and Jochum as well, Oistrach well done. The contents page for this set for sale online was not photographed well enough for me to decipher. You might consider arranging some close ups of these gems upon your presentation.
No probem at all. The contents page is part of a 17 page booklet and looks unread. I'll see if I can add more detail in my next vid. I normally don't buy compilations but this is a different category really and I can't pass up original DG offerings! Makes you woinder where it's been since 1956.
@@Perfectvirgo Looking around the internet, it appears to me the plumb in this pudding is Beethoven / David Oistrakh, 1961: Romance in G-dur, Op. 40 - Eugene Goossens and quite rich as I cannot find where the recording has ever existed before this release.
@@guywalker29 We may be talking abiout different collections. THis is the Discogs listing for the set I have: www.discogs.com/release/8160930-Various-A-Treasury-Of-The-Great-Symphonies
What you bought were excerpts rather than a compilation, although the two have similar histories born from the 78 rpm age in that customers often bought discs not for themselves, but for others (Mother's Day in the U.S. especially) where shopkeepers might be given a general idea of what kind of music the customer was inclined to buy, and an album was assembled in a folio the shopkeeper supplied at a cost or possibly included with the determined number of discs was agreed upon, hence the expression "album" carried over into the LP age as well as the idea of excerpts organized from very long symphonic works that might catch the ear of the uncertain listener, but especially opera, which in itself was a driving concern to develop the LP.
What I found at the Thrift Store was not excerpts. This is a boxed collection of 12 full symphonies spanning 10 LPs compiled by Deutsche Grammophon.
Fun video, i cant find any vinyl worth purchasing at any thrift stores. I do drop into one Thrift store in North Vancouver to pick through the shelves of cd's. $2 a disc plus my senior discount hahaha. Oh and the month of October is 50% off most everything for seniors 😊. Bought 11 cd's last week.
Thanks for watching! Most of the stock in our local thrift stores is fit for the dump. However I do find that classical is almost always in much better condition thatn rock/pop. Possibly an age thing. I have thousands of CDs and I do browse those too. Gotta love our semiors' discount!
Thrift stores are supposed to be for the poor. But leeches on the make use them.
One of ours charges more than Walmart for some everyday items. I'm happy to support the charities that back them but the greed is unpleasant.
I not canadian but without these leeches charity shops would not exist from university students who buy cheap clothing to those who buys to cheap to sell on , to those who collect book or records ye all leeches according to u . Your comment is moronic
What are you on about?. Leeches?.. . You mean resellers?. The leeches are the charity shops not paying staff, the leeches are the CEOs earning a fortune. Leeches are politicians.
Rusty cheese graters with 100 year old hand-churned cheese still in them and then they consider that an antique and charge you accordingly. Yep that pretty much describes Value Village, but I have found some great humdinger deals at the VV and many times they have it priced at the "I-have-no-idea-what-this-is-so-I'll-mark-it-cheap" price. But then they charge you $30.00 for a warped Van Halen record just because the name is on there. No doubt one has to be careful, but the funny thing is, that's where I find a lot of my best surprise finds, so I keep going back. Plus the Tuesday Senior Discount can't be beat. When I can go there and find a like-new Black Keys album for $10 after discount....that's what makes it worth it. I've found some great classical records at both VV and Mission Thrift from time to time too. Since my wife loves the thrift stores, I go in them with her all the time and I always check the vinyl and CDs. Nice video and I subbed!
Retuned after two days ! One of the worst products I have purchased in terms of value for the money.
Paid the wrong price.
Surprisingly, I’ve been doing fairly well at my local value village lately. I’ve been tempted a few times to dip my foot into some of the large classical box sets but it’s so far outside my knowledge based I haven’t taken the chance. Thanks for sharing!
Box sets can represent good value for money but only if you like what you hear! I do plenty of listening research here on YT and can soon tell if something is to my taste. As a rule composers of the 18th and 19th centuries are the easiest to get into. 20th century music became atonal.
@@Perfectvirgo thanks for the tip. Cheers
This was fun and very interesting and you know what, am pulling out some of my parent’s classical albums this morning, thanks again 🎼
Thanks, no doubt you'll find something of interest to enjoy!
I bought the Spin Cleaner years ago, similar to this process but I like your way, that vacuum is very cool
This definitely takes music collecting to a whole new level of involvement! The attachment for the vacuum cleaner is called the "Vinyl Vac" and is readily available. The slit underneath that sucks on the record is sheathed in velvet. I'll perhaps film another session with more of that kind of detail.
Good evening from Montreal, your channel popped up and enjoyed this. We are huge thrifters here… Nice finds right there ✌🏼. Am subbed
Hello there! Thrifting can be rewarding but many outlets are spoiling the fun with their adventurous pricing.
@@Perfectvirgo I totally agree
In UK these are car boot items.
Some nice finds there, cool with the boxset. Happy cleaning and spinning, cheers
I've stopped going to thrift stores back in 2021...greedflation is in full bloom in Ontario. I can't be bothered to pay exorbitant prices from New to used anymore. Glad you found some treats
I agree, greed is ruining it. However in PEI MIssions Thrift Store charges 50c for classical and usually $1 for rock/pop. The latter is usually fit for the garbage bin but the classical is often well looked after. I find that older recordings are often cleaner than new vinyl so I'm happy to boost my classical collection on the cheap!
@@Perfectvirgo I dont have a ton of records ( 1350 ) but I have had many of my records for over 45 yrs...and they are all playable. I have a 'thing' about touching records...when I met my wife, the first time she came to my place I showed her my stereo (which I also still have) and records and told her I dont have many rules but one is never touch my records or my stereo hahaha 37 yrs later she still not allowed to touch my records haha
@@DarkSideOfThePepper That's rather funny. Always good to set ground rules early on! I sold the majority of my vinyl in the early 80s and embraced CDs of which I now have about 2,500. I have since re-acquired a few dozen 'must-haves' on vinyl. Since rekindling my interest in classical music I have been buying vinyl from a great source in Germany via Discogs.
@@Perfectvirgo I have a pile of Classical Shellacs I havent even put into Dicogs yet
How wonderful to find a Barenboim on EMI. Where in Canada do you live?
I'm in PEI
I found a Sheffield lab disc for a dollar Thelma Houston and pressure cooker it's pristine 😮
Greast find!
Great video, very informative. One small question: Are the speakers powered by a plug into the wall, or did you need an amplifier
Hi and thanks! Yes the speakers plug into a wall outlet. The right hand one houses the amplifier and has volume and bass controls on the back.
Not needed.
@@Perfectvirgo thank you so much 👍
@@RobertWarszawski how ironic
The D.G box is a gift. I am guessing the Leningrad record is probably one of the last 3 Tchaikovsky symphonies. They are considered to be reference performances. White-hot orchestral playing. Congrats on your good luck.
There are several other box sets there (probably donated from the same source) but nothing else that really grabbed me. I spent over an hour washing and vacuuming this lot and those I have sampled sound very good indeed for almost 70 years old! Yes, the Leningrad recording is Tchaikovsky's 5th. Shostakovich is the Warsaw Philharmonic and the rest are Berlin PO and the Berlin Radio SO.
@@Perfectvirgo Ahh that must be the mono Tchaikovsky 5th with Mravinsky…white hot and better IMHO than the stereo remake on DG…happy listening…cheers from Kolkata India
@@indranilpoddar7195 It truly is spectacular. Happy hunting!
I clean my records in a similiar way to you. I use the big house hoover to do the vac part. I wrap a microfiber cloth around the nozzle so no contact between hoover and vinyl. I f you have a steady hand, put the hoover on high power and vac without going anywhere near. Noisy but effective.
A good DIY solution. The attachment I have for my vacuum cleaner sucks through a narrow slit surrounded by soft velvet so no plastic touches the vinyl.
I have many Melodiya records. The Russians deserve credit for these good, honest recordings. In fact,I recognise that cover.
I completely agree. I have many more on order!
@@Perfectvirgo Many years ago,a friend had the complete Melodiya discography in a book with more pages than a Harry Potter book. It contained over a million recordings. They were all classical and folk music. No jazz or pop music. The Melodiya recordings that were reissued by EMI are worth searching out. On Discogs it seems that eastern european sellers have a lot. I do not always like the inflated postage that they demand.
@@heifetz14 Very interesting. I buy very little rock or pop on vinyl these days as the prices for early pressings are too high and the quality of new pressings is generally very poor. So my current buying habit is classical on vinyl and I have found a couple of German Discogs sellers whose international postage is reasonable and their stocks of Melodiya releases are high. I also have recordings by the former GDR on the Eterna label which are good quality.
I was fortunate to have found one soviet LP that was so old that the label is MK instead of Melodya.
@@billdang3953 I think it might be an abbreviation for the name of the label earlier on. Will have to research that one.

Will do Cathy. Unfortunately Rheumatoid Arthritis kept me off the bike during much of the glorious summer weather but I am enjoying a slight reprieve for now so I am taking full advantage!
People like to complain that these are cheap. I’ve had mine for 11 years now and never had any issues with it. It does what I need it to do and I’m very happy with it.
Agreed. This is as much turntable as nost listeners will need and excellent value for money.
**UPDATE** These pedals definitely provide more support with their sizeable platform. They are smooth in operation and stylish to the eye. One thing to note is that, when you unclip, the SPD side invariably hangs underneath due to its additional weight. Clip one foot in before setting off and it's easy enough to flip the other pedal with the toe of your shoe. It might take a couple of tries before you catch it.
i bought a pair of these a while back - b4 fitting i noticed one span ok, the other was really stiff - stripped 'em down and replaced the bearings with steel races containing ceramic bearings and greased the spindles properly - all great since! happy riding, stay safe!
Thanks for commenting. This pair spins smoothly so maybe just a quality control issue. I'm hoping to try them out today if the rain stays away!
