Starting to Sheetrock - Building an Off-Grid Tiny Cabin Ep. 34
Sheetrock may not be the most rustic cabin finish.
...but it is fairly inexpensive and somewhat forgiving.
The downside? It's a workout!

Insulating With MOLTEN ROCK? Building an Off-Grid Tiny Cabin Ep. 33

Last fall, early snow almost kept us from getting our Rockwool rafter insulation to our off-grid tiny cabin: ruclips.net/video/Q2SxRkmNFag/видео.htmlsi=SMuysDTf18oovekR This year I kept a better eye on the weather and got our wall insulation to the cabin hours before a storm set in. Again, I chose Rockwool insulation for higher R-value, moisture resistance, and fire resistance. Even with 2x4 wa...

Just because we are building an off-grid cabin, it doesn't mean we want to be without the modern creature comforts that come with electricity. The first step is roughing all the electrical. It must be done before the wall insulation goes up. Very cool video. You mentioned in the comments that the beams are attached to the posts using 14" lag screws. I was wondering if you end up adding some brackets to keep it in place, but also, do you "toenail" the screws? Thank you for the video!

    • @tinycabinpnw
      @tinycabinpnw Месяц назад

      I was planning on adding diagonal 4x4 bracing to give it extra wind resistance strength and also add steel straps to further strengthen the bond between the beams and the posts. I didn't toenail the screws, they were put in straight vertical into the end grain of the posts. Not the best for holding again uplift, but I figured that plus the straps should secure it well.

    You used 8 piers? Would that do for a 10x24 too? Do you want a foundation build job in Asheville NC?

    • @tinycabinpnw
      @tinycabinpnw 2 месяца назад

      Yes, I did use 8 piers. It all depends on the weight-bearing characteristics of your soil. Take a look at the description and it should walk you through the calculations and tools I used. Sorry, I'm afraid my day job would keep me from giving you a hand on your project. I bet there are some great areas around there for cabin builds!

    I'm doing a 10 x 24ft. Is yours to residential code? Mine has to be. How much did it cost you? Great work! If it's to code do you have plans / specs?

    • @tinycabinpnw
      @tinycabinpnw 2 месяца назад

      You would have to look into you local residential code to determine if it meets code for your area. Unfortunately I didn't come up with a set of plans for this project. I basically had a vision for what I wanted it to look like and I started building. For the foundation I did run the math calculations to determine my cabin would need 8 piers. I believe I currently have about $12k into the project.

    • @tinycabinpnw

      The plan is to power the cabin with solar panels and a backup generator if it’s ever needed. With that setup do you still think it qualifies as “off grid”?

      The framing is pressure treated and the decking is cedar. It has similar rot and pest resistance to redwood but was more economical.
