ああわからない - Aa Wakaranai - English Translation | Sung by Toshi Tsuchitori
By Soeda Azenbo 添田唖蝉坊
Sung by Toshi Tsuchitori 土取利行
"I Don't Know"
We're back with another translation! It's been a while, and this song in particular has been on my radar for the longest time. I've been busy doing a whole lot of nothing lately, so I figured I'd use the new time I've got to translate again. Next up is going to certainly be Oppekepe-Bushi.
Translator Notes---
Note 1 - 火の車 (hi no kuruma) refers to both a specific burning wheel in Buddhism that brings the sinners into hell, and the idea of being in a desperate financial situation. So when they complain about their finances, it's like they're spinning the wheel to their own suffering, as Soeda Azenbou describes it....

Hank William Sr. - House of the Rising Sun

(AI Cover) This video is probably going to have an extremely small niche. But when has that stopped me before? I added in some 78 noise to make it even more authentic sounding. I intended to sing it myself, but I have a cold right now so that complicated things. By Tadashi Yamazaki 山崎正 Sung by Hachirou Kasuga 春日八郎 "Madam Lady of Riches" And here's Otomi-san! An iconic song from the 50s. This was a really neat translation to complete, as it's full of deeper meanings connected to its source material. I still intend on translating Oppekepe-bushi sometime soon, but this song gripped my attention for a while and I couldn't neglect it. As for any of my other...

By Kin'ya Shimada 島田磬也 Sung by Ichiro Fujiyama 藤山一郎 "The Order of the White Tiger" Back with another translation. I've been hesitant to work on another urbanism video, since the quality of the last one had made its rushed production so evident, but I still have a project in the works. The format of that video will be less NJB and sensationalist than I considered for my last project, because I'v...

I still plan on doing that kind of thing, but I won't let that get in t...

Sung by Hashi Yukio 橋幸夫 "Straw Hats of Itako" Originally, I was working on the translation for ブラブラ節 but I had a vacation which separated me from my computer for a bit. While I was there, I got to listen to a lot more Ryuukouka/Enka and decided to translate this when I got home (only 3 verses meant it would be a pretty quick one). But actually taking the time to take it all in, it's a pretty we...

By Soeda Azenbo 添田唖蝉坊 Sung by Toshi Tsuchitori 土取利行 "Ballad of Tokyo" This is a song I've really been looking forward to translating. Just the thought that an American Civil War song could end up in Japan as a patriotic song only to be reused as a folk song strikes me as sorta cyclical. I don't think I'd be exaggerating if I said this was Toshi Tsuchitori's most well known rendition aside from ...

As well, this song is not played with a trumpet typically, the title of Trumpet Song is just a style of song, with a distinctive トコトットット at the end of every stanza. Super awesome ! Been a fan of this song for awhile but never knew the meaning besides the backstory a japanese friend told me once. Thanks for this and great audio fidelity aswell ! ❤
秀孝院威徳弘道存覺 「パイノパイノパイ」は、演歌師の添田知道(添田さつき)によって作詞され大正時代に流行した俗謡である。東京節(とうきょうぶし)ともいう。元々のメロディーは、ヘンリー・クレイ・ワーク作曲の「ジョージア行進曲」(Marching Through Georgia)である。

What is the function / meaning of the acapella middle section?
It's in a few songs from this era. When performers would sing traditionally shakuhachi songs, because the shakuhachi was unaccompanied, so would their vocals be. The solemn subject matter of the lyrics probably demanded a reverent acapella. It works really well in my opinion.
@@kopshi This isn't the case. The singing form is called Shigin (詩吟), and while it is sometimes accompanied by the shakuhachi, it is usually sung unaccompanied. Shigin has strange grammar and rare characters because it is basically a Japanese reading of a Chinese poem. (If it were a Japanese poem, it would have verses of 7 and 5 morae, like the rest of the song does.) The poem sung here is an excerpt from a longer Shigin, called "Byakkotai." Here is the excerpt in its original Chinese: 南望鶴城砲煙颺 痛哭飲涙且彷徨 宗社亡兮我事畢 十有六人屠腹僵 In the original Chinese, the poem rhymed: (there are metrical breaks between groups of 4 and 3) Nán wàng hèchéng / pào yān yáng tòngkū yǐn lèi / qiě fǎnghuáng zōngshè wáng xī / wǒ shì bì shí yǒu liù rén / túfù jiāng Read in Japanese as: Minami tsurugajou wo nozomeba / houen agaru tsuukoku-namida wo nonde / katsu houkousu sousha horobinu / waga koto owaru jyuuyuuroku nin / tofuku shite taoru Shigin poems are read in Japanese using the Kanbun method, which involves conjugating verbs (in classical Japanese) and adding Japanese particles. Usually, the Japanese reading is somewhat stilted since the languages aren't fully compatible, and some Chinese verbs don't have a Japanese kanji reading (ex. the Chinese verb 颺 meaning "to float upwards" becomes あがる (but written in kanji as 颺る) meaning simply "to go up.") "Horobinu" is not a negative verb conjugation, but rather the perfect tense form in Classical Japanese. This is because this conjugation is present in the original Chinese grammar (亡兮). I also feel like the 16 vs 19 confusion can be explained this way: the character 有 is listed as "(of age) old" on Wiktionary. I'm not too good at literary Chinese, but I feel like this is referring to the age of the boys (who were indeed around sixteen.) It's definitely not Ichiro's singing mistake, since 十有六人 is present in some old sources. There is a Wikipedia article on Shigin for a better explanation.
@@kopshi Nevermind, I think it actually is a mistake by Ichiro, because the "old sources" are actually sourced from this song. The official Shigin website has 十有九人. As for the term 有, 十有九人 seems to be an alternate form of 十又九人 (pronounced the same). The difference between 十九 and 十又九 is basically "nineteen" vs. "nine and ten" (the more archaic form.)
Thanks for the translation!
