5 Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander books to read this Invasion Day
Have you watched The Remains of the Day or Never Let Me Go? Theyre such brilliant movies, some of my favourites ever! New subscriber here❤
I loved We could have been friends, my father and I. His writing explains the historical context so well. I need to read more of his books. Thank you for talking about Palestinian authors.
Missed you Katey! You are inspiring me to try to start reading (physical) books again! I have been in years-long slump. This year I discovered audio books - they are helping me get back into reading (this from someone who read all 1200pp of LofTR in a week as a teen! I'm heading over to you Patreon to check out what you're doing there.
Hey Katey! Comments are off for the videos of yours I was watching but I just found you after I finished Well of Ascension and found your reviews for the Mistborne books and I'm SO happy I found you and am definitely a huge fan now. I've never been more confused and let down by a book series that was SO hyped for me and you felt like the only sane person in the world. I hope you keep making videos because you seem like a brilliant and wonderful person.
I really liked Terrace Story -- I'm definitely going to get my hands on some of her backlist!
🤞I am also heavily reliant on audiobooks at the mo. Mostly due to the fact that I fall asleep after a couple of pages of physical reading. I (rather selfishly) hope you pass through to the other side of your reading slump soon. I love your reviews and want you to review ALL the books! (No pressure 😆)
I have been in a health related reading slump for 2 years because since I had my 1 COVID in 2022 I get horrific migraines from the eye movement I do during reading and I hate it also can’t afford audiobooks they’re like 40€ and more per book here. Also I have auditory processing disorder and I’m legally deaf (because untreated ear infections as a child and migraines damaged my hearing nerves or something) so hearing is also a problem sometimes 😅 I’ve almost finished the sun eater trials by Aidan Thomas in German and read wood walkers by Katja Brandis also in German. And that was basically it for the last 2-3 months. I’m still on reading some of the Palestinian authors you recommended and also the sand walk book I think? I also read 2 graphic novels moon cakes (queer disabled magic) and nayra and the djinn (queer Palestinian magic)
Oof, when the ahedonia hits me, I drift away from reading too. It sounds like you did have some good times, even during your slump!
Guilty of buying the prequel just for the beauty of the dang thing. However, VERY hesitant to read it for all the failures you summarized here with Priory. Such a huge commitment for such a high probability of being so disappointed.
Arms frequently betray me in clothes.
😩❤️❤️❤️
I love the first purple skirt, the blue dress, the blue jacket over sized shirt, the scarf and more. I would wear the gold shoes with your croc dress with a chunky gold necklace that hangs down past the collar. The gold shoes just need a gold accent, such as a scarf, necklace or bracelets.
Ooh I think you may have hit on one of the reasons I’m finding those shoes tricky - I don’t really have chunky jewellery, the chunkiest I have is the necklace I wear everyday which I inherited from my Grany. Other than that, I don’t have much gold going on anywhere else in my wardrobe! You’ve given me some great good for thought, thank you!
OMG! the crocodile dress!!!💚💚💚🐊
I know right!! 🐊
The gold shoes: truly, wear them with anything!
I will try!
100% agree, I had gold shoes for a couple of years before they wore out and I wore them all day every day.
Yes! We had to wear a hat at school. As an adult I have continued to wear a hat every time I go outdoors.
I love the crocodile dress and the blue dress looks stunning on you. Great finds! I really want to go out thrifting today now. Feeling inspired
Thank you! I hope the thrift gods bless you on your next treasure hunt!
@@KateyOneMoreTime Thank you, they most certainly did. I went to 'Savemart' that very afternoon and found some clothing gold.
Amazing!
All of these pieces are fantastic, but I love the blue dress the most! I'm a cotton lover too. Acrylic - no thanks. The colours, styles and prints/patterns that you choose are inspiring! Such a great bargain on the sneakers! I remember when I found my "Dorothy" shoes second hand - some one had turned a pair of high heels into red sparkly shoes like the ones in the Wizard of Oz and I got them for $5. I love them so much! I can't wear them any more because my feet have changed over the years but I have kept the shoes out of nostalgia 👠
Dorothy shoes definitely sound worthy of a nostalgia item to keep! How fun!
I NEVER thought I'd be sitting through an entire non bookish/nerdy video but I always watch the ones you upload all the way through! I guess this is because of how authentic and unaffected by consumerism your fashion content really is. I always feel the genuine passion and enthusiasm you radiate when talking about the items/outfits in the video 🧡🧡 Also, I think you're beginning to convince me to be braver and try more colors and patterns after seeing how well you make them work! I'm relatively new to your channel but you're a gem and your content brings me some much needed joy so thank you 💖💖
P.S. The blue top is sooooo pretty!! 😍
Thank you so much, I don’t think you could’ve written a nicer, more encouraging comment if you’d tried!! 🥰🥰🥰
Thank you for making this video.
❤️🍉
the thing that gets me at second hand stores and deciding to get things or not is things really can grow on me. I'm super undecided in the store, I buy it, two weeks later I'm in love with it.
Ah I totally know what you mean! I wrote a jumper today that I bought from savers earlier in the year, at the time i thought it was fine… now it’s one of my most worn, favourite items!
By the time I'm ready to let go of large amounts of clothes, I'm so sick of the clutter that I just donate them lol. It's been a while since I've done that, though. After a few big purges I've managed to keep my closet to a manageable number because I don't want it bursting at the seams again. Unrelated to clothing, do you still use Hobonichi? I remember seeing you talk about your planner in a video from a while ago. Getting anything this year??
I haven’t used a hobonichi or any paper planer in a couple of years now! I’m pretty much all digital these days - do miss the adorable designs, though!
I fully understand the discomfort of a high neckline. 🤮
Thank you for understanding!! 🤢
I think you should get the dress tailored into a skirt and maybe you could turn the top half into some kind of accessory like a little pouch maybe?
Oh cute!
I think that if you're really excited about having the dress as a skirt, you should go for it! If you're just feeling meh about the skirt, then sell the dress as is. The wavy green print was super cute, but it looked like someone might have cropped the bottom themself because the hem looked a little wonky.
I think you’re right about the green wavy top. As for the dress, it’s funny, I remember liking it more than I did when I tried it on again for this video! 😅
Have you ever been to the conscious closet richmond ? They support fitted for work who helps low income people get clothing for job interviews etc.
No, I haven’t! Next time I’m out that way I’ll have to check it out, thanks!
This was a lot of fun! ❤ I have never sold any old clothes though there are some boutique shops here that do consignment; I feel like they mostly are keen on vintage or higher end items than I own. I am currently making a little pile of autumn/winter items to bring to a giveaway for newcomer families + do little giveaways to local organizations a few times a year.
Nice!
That fact that you do love it. I would get it turned into a skirt and then the top part maybe make a tote bag or head scarf
Oh great ideas!
I recommend getting the dress turned into a skirt. It's so you!
Thank you so much for these recommendations! Official diagnosis is not an accessible option for me at the moment so this is immensely helpful 💜💜
So glad to hear this was useful to you ❤️
You feel even more emotional if u heard Mahmoud darwish reading his poestry
Did you read ghassan kanafani works?
Not yet!
Lots of great books, a few I haven’t read yet. Women and Girls on the Autism Spectrum is incredible, I feel like every page I’m just constantly going “ohhh, that’s just autism and that makes sense now”. Also, there’s another book titled Late Bloomer, that I downloaded because it’s a sapphic romance, and the main character (which I was surprised to learn) is autistic, and the other main character thinks she might be ADHD.
I just finished Good Different by Meg Eden Kuyatt, which is a middle grade book in verse. It sounds like it and May Tomorrow Be Awake would be good friends.
Ooh how cool!
Excellent video! I’m at an early stage of exploring my neurodivergent identity. Your discussion of these books is very comprehensive, and I’ve already put some of them in my cart or checked them out from the library. I really appreciate your thoughts and suggestions!
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks for putting this video together. It's going to be such a helpful resource for so many people, myself included.
You're very welcome!
I'm so glad to hear that you have been having a positive experience with pain psychology. I had heard great things from friends about it, but it took me a long time to be open to the idea. After so many years of stigma and hearing 'it's all in your head', it felt counter-intuitive and I was resistant. I started attending pain support meetings a few years ago, anad having that peer community was invaluable. I felt seen for the first time in years. Lorimer Moseley is a prominent pain scientist here in SA and is frequently referenced during our meetings. I love the cover art on Explain Pain, too!
I am so excited to check some of these out, I was diagnosed a few years ago but have been in survival mode ever since and really need to engage with some affirming stories. Thanks so much for sharing, I have passed the video along to all my friends :)
I hope you find some of them useful ❤️
Great video and a great list of books! - I've read 10 of them so far. Some others I can really recommend are: Sara Gibbs - Drama Queen Steph Jones - The Autistic Survival Guide to Therapy Pete Wharmby - Untypical Pete Wharmby - What I Want to Talk About Chris Packham - Fingers in the Sparkle Jar
Ooh thanks so much for the extra recommendations!
This is such a timely video for me. Thank you for putting this together. Breaking it down for different parts of the journey was inspired and really helpful for me.
Glad it was helpful!
I wasn't a huge fan of Unmasking Autism since it seemed to focus mainly on autistic people who have lower support needs, or are financially independent, which isn't something I entirely relate to anymore. A lot of unmasking is subconscious for me, so I struggled to connect to that or find it very useful for where I'm at in my acceptance journey. I thought it may have been better as a memoir instead. As a somewhat intro to autism, I know it's useful for many. I personally liked "Drama Queen: One Autistic Woman and a Lifetime of Unhelpful Labels." I read it awhile ago though, so my views may have changed, but at the time it was helpful! Thanks for these recs, I'll have to check them out.
That is totally fair. Thanks for the extra recommendation - I’ll have to look into that one!
*adds I Think I Might Be Autistic by Cynthia Kim to cart* I think this is what I need. A medical dx is not for me-- I will never be able to afford one, in any case. There are no supports here for adult Autistics as well.
I hope you find it useful xx
Ahhhh Katey! I'm so excited to see you post this video (maybe you've talked about being autistic before, but this is the first I'm seeing about it). I've been going down the "am I autistic?" rabbit hole for a few months now after finally getting my ADHD diagnosis last year, and when I read about how women are often misdiagnosed with many other things first including bipolar disorder, I thought of you and wondered if that might be your situation too! I just sort of hoped that you would stumble across this info too if you needed to hear it, and it makes my heart so happy to see you on this journey (regardless if the other diagnoses are still useful or not, I'm not assuming you were misdiagnosed necessarily)! Thanks so much for these recommendations -- I especially appreciate the advice on waiting to read "Unmasking Autism" until you've read books from the first section, since it's one of the audiobooks I have on deck. I started listening to "Divergent Mind" but I'm struggling to get through it a little bit, so I think I'll try "Is This Autism?" first or maybe one of the others you mentioned in the first section. I'd be curious to hear what you think about the book "The Autistic Survival Guide to Therapy" if it looks like something you'd want to add to your reading list. I've heard several content creators talk about how that book was life-changing for them, and like you said, you'd have a ton of "neurotypical-style" therapy to compare it to! Unrelatedly I also just want to say that I appreciate how thoughtful you are and how much you walk the walk with your values and politics! Even though I'm not Australian and didn't always feel the need to pick up books you've spoken about that feature indigenous experiences, etc., just hearing you talk about your local social/justice related issues have really made me think -- and kind of shift perspectives that reading isn't just for fun and escapism, but in a way we have a duty to be informed and care about those we share a community with, or if not a duty, we should want to learn/understand/care if that aligns with the values we claim to have. And even now as I was thinking "too bad she didn't link these books with affiliate Amazon links," I scrolled down farther and now I know about libro.fm and will go download it! So thank you again!
Thanks so much :) I have spoken about it a couple of times here and there in a handful of videos, but I haven’t spoken about it extensively. It’s been quite the journey, thanks for sure!
Thanks so much for putting this together, Katey! A really lovely round-up. I love The Electricity of Every Living Thing SO much! Another one I really enjoyed is On The Spectrum by Daniel Bowman. Bowman is writing a Christian perspective, but don't let that put you off (if it would)...he spends a lot of the book examining common Christian lessons and the hypocrisy of Christians and church communities that aren't actually very accepting and accommodating of others. I found it so insightful. I've also heard great things about Neurotribes by Steve Silberman and I really want to get to Empire of Normality by Robert Chapman soon.
Ooh I do want to read Empire of Normality!
I love your wardrobe/clothing videos ♥️🌈
Yay! Thank you!
I th8 k strictly in the name of the challenge, 🧡won. But that yellow skirt was fabulous!
What a fun idea. I really liked the orange day and the red day. Off topic: What was the name of that fairy book that you love so much? I can't remember and tried looking through your old videos but couldn't find the video where you talked about it. Thanks!
I remember that video too! I would love the name of that book too. Loved this rainbow challenge Katey.
Are you thinking of Meeting Fairies by R Ogilvie Crombie?! Omg that book 🥰🥰🥰🥰
@@KateyOneMoreTime Yes! Thanks so much. I know it's hard to find and expensive when you do so I'm going to add it to my list to be on the lookout for.
My favourite was the orange but omg that skirt from the red day is just so good
I do love that skirt!
Learning you're autistic and having those epiphanies of what's been giving you sensory overload is such a relatable experience! I love your style! Also your dog is so cute omg
❤️❤️❤️
Yellow, green, blue I could do- maybe purple
Omg toddler- core! Yes! I always say that I look like a grown up toddler in some outfits.
My entire wardrobe is black, so this would be a very short experiment for me. But I like black, and I feel really comfortable in it. I think you smashed every day! Super cute video, thanks!
Black is such a cool, bold choice so I get the appeal. As a former goth kid, I approve! 🖤
@KateyOneMoreTime 😂🤣😂🤣 I'm very, very far from a goth kid, but I can totally see you as one! I'm just an old lady who reads and wears black now, lol
Haha love that for you!
