    I used to love popping to Eau Claire Market- I worked right across from it at The YMCA from 1995-2000 . It used to be so vibrant and humming with life. So many unique shops and fun food to try. The buskers roaming around- I remember Dan the One Man Band was fun to watch and listen to, along with many other performers that I had cd's for. Going to Imax was new then and considered a neat experience.... Too bad Eau Claire got neglected. Calgary deserved better than that.

      I strongly suspect it was allowed to run down because the redevelopment was in the planning for a very long time. if it was running full pace and crazy busy it would be much harder to justify closing and redevelopment. that chunk of land is very valuable and i think this was the plan all along. it never really did do what it was supposed to do but i dont think the owners were to worried about that aspect in view of the upcoming redevelopment.

      I dont head out that way much anymore, Louise has become so busy and so expensive that local people dont really go there much now. There is talk of a passenger train out that way again, but that conversation has been going on for 30 plus years and still no train.

    I suppose with those pellets you can get a nice bed of embers going, the trouble I have when using sticks (perhaps half an inch in diameter tops) is that they burn nice and quick and hot (once you get the thing lit), but don't really produce hot embers to speak of, such that the stove goes out relatively quickly (using all the fuel) and it's an absolute bugger to get re-lit, which invariably happens half way through a cook. If I try and feed sticks into the stove as its cooking I find it's very easy to smother it. And once its smothered its difficult to relight as the sticks are all half burned - they're not hot enough to act as embers, but they're too burnt to act as fuel to light the stove. Copius kindling is a workable but annoying solution. I've had some success running a trangia in this stove and wood at the same time, but am reaching the conclusion that it's too much of a pain in the arse to run pure wood on a regular basis. I suspect this stove is particularly rewarding to those highly skilled in fire!

    • @davebloggs
      @davebloggs Месяц назад

      I agree with what you are saying here I do find on sticks they work great when you stand the sticks up. which is easy when you first fill it not so easy as you top up, on a full charge of pellets i get good cooking heat for around 1 hour which for me is ample time to cook some food., I can top up with pellets as i go by adding small amounts here and there but generally a full charge is just about right,. to boil around a liter of water takes around 8 to 10 mins which sounds long but in cold weather is not to bad at all. i find them a handy little stove and the thing i like is it all fits into my pots kit with no additional space taken up, and everywhere I go I can always find sticks. thank you for watching and the input is always welcome.

    • @panmicrotones
      @panmicrotones Месяц назад

      @@davebloggs Yes I agree it is a great piece of kit, especially for how small it is. I'm beginning to think when running sticks for longer cooking sessions it makes more sense to let it burn to ash, dump the ashes and then fill it up again and relight with kindling and all, rather than attempting to top it up with the embers in there, as I seem to get a lot of smoke when topping up + abovementioned smothering.

    • @davebloggs
      @davebloggs Месяц назад

      @@panmicrotones I think you are right they do seem to work best if you fill them run the entire fuel charge then refill completely and relight I did try this once as the embers were still glowing nicely I tipped them out refilled with new pellets and then put the embers on the top, this helped but i still just lit it as i normally would. for what they are I think they are a great little stove.

I just received word of another trail that needs some work in that area so that is next on the list.

    Did this a few days ago. This video helped me take the "new" way to the cutline as opposed to swampy trail 57. I took that way back mind you. From the peak I went across the ridge a ways and took 58B down. If you have aspirations this summer of climbing up that one it's in my Rockies day hike 112 video. You actually commented on it 7 months ago.

    • @davebloggs
      @davebloggs Месяц назад

      That is cool. glad the video helped. its a nice walk for sure and once across the cutblock its a fairly relaxed walk to the top,, did you do the meadow of the bushwhack at the top.. i did look at the other peaks off to the left from the top, i did think about coming down that way as i had seen it in your video, but time was marching on and i know me well i cant resist stopping for deadfall, so that will be another day trip for me, I think i would start at trail 57 far end then up 58a. , glad the video helped, i did put up some red flagging by the cut block etc and cutline, its is a little over grown but i chomped out quite a bit,

    • @marcofthetrail
      @marcofthetrail Месяц назад

      @@davebloggs I got tired of side hilling in the meadow in that tufty tall grass. Not a nice hiking surface as I'm sure you know. So I climbed up to the top of the ridge and zig zagged in the trees until I stumbled across a trail. I found your signature red trail tape several times. Especially helpful along that cutblock since of course the old orange flagging is still there from the logging. I'm assuming you mean up 58B. I did some work along that one but it certainly could use some more love. On the ridge between the two trails I found what I assume is a hunter's camp. A very strange camp with no water, no views, no fire pit, and they lifted in 2 plastic barrels of supplies. I can only surmise with a helicopter. I know little about hunting but are they really gonna helicopter out whatever they shoot? Or is the plan to haul it out on their shoulders? No clue. I didn't start hiking till like 11:30 but was surprised to find I was arriving back at the car at 8:30. All the zig zagging and trail work and hunting around and such. It just takes a lot of time.

    • @davebloggs
      @davebloggs Месяц назад

      @@marcofthetrail I would come in from 57 far end then up 58b next time round i think just because its a different route and different things to see. there are many strange finds in that area, I have seen skidoo track right up through that way, and also seen horse crews hauling in some pretty big gear, once you cross the cut block and just before heading down to the small creek crossing on the old cut line you will see a good trail off on the right if you follow that up not even a km you will find a great horse coral . in one of slightly earlier videos all smoke alternative start wrong way video, i went out that way a very nice place to explore. , I try not to do to much red tape i prefer cut logs and rock piles etc but sometimes the tape stands out at a distance. i tend to put it in spots that i think now where the heck do i go. so hopefully the next person will find it, a trail soon appears. Im planning on heading to trail 19 again all being well on the weekend i cleared out loads of dead fall last couple of visits but still way more to do. how was the road in there did you come in from the ware creek PRA i find that road a pain in the mud in wet weather.

    • @marcofthetrail
      @marcofthetrail Месяц назад

      @@davebloggs Wow you're working on 19? I guess even Gil is dropping it from her next edition. Never thought of a skidoo, quad tracks would be obvious but maybe they figured out a way up there in winter over the snow. Far as the road from the PRA: I stopped at the bottom of the hill and parked in the pullout for the old road going down the North side of the creek because the mud hole that's always there was a little much. It was maybe a km from the normal tralhead. My car has the lowest clearance though imaginable.

    • @davebloggs
      @davebloggs Месяц назад

      @@marcofthetrail I have cleared out 19 from the top and the bottom end must have moved at least 100 trees so far, i know she is dropping it but it still gets used , someone has been through there with orange tape not to long ago which was well handy, i did some videos, but to my way of thinking there are only 2 north south trails in that area and the death valley one is crazy hard to follow at the top in the swampy grass so 19 it was and link creek all the way through to the ware PRA. my plan is to start south head north to the big meadows and the link creek turn off, then head back south, I fixed up the fences and the signage through there as much was in a right mess, I try to avoid the top road if it has not been dry for several days, my car also has low clearance , but i have surprised many people when they find me out in the middle of no where in a little car.

I see some of the guys on here striking their Ferro Rod several more times, once a flame has been produced and I'm thinking; "What are you DOING!?!?!?!?". The BEST Ferro Rods are good for 10,000 strikes or more... But there's going to come a time, near the end of its life, where EVERY single strike matters and if you're stranded or living the true "Mountain Man" lifestyle then you should stop striking your Ferro Rod, Flint, or anything else you're using as SOON as it goes to flame; Just for that time when you might be down to your last strike, in a situation where you're trying to prevent hypothermia or anything of the sort.

    This is a TULD type cooker. There are many possible loading and combustion methods, but only one optimal one. It is very compact, universal and effective. Its shape and modular design are an excellent basis for modifications and improvements - over the course of several years of use, I have made 14 of them (I also have a gas and alcohol insert for it). I achieved comprehensive management of oxygen, flame, combustion temperature of 500 ~ 1100°C, charcoal and embers. Disadvantages: weight, transport space and self-degradation of the material (inox 304). I think I know "almost" everything about her.

    • @davebloggs
      @davebloggs 7 месяцев назад

      To me they weigh just about nothing and it fits very nicely in the pot I carry along with many other small items so im never worried about that. as for material. I have used mine extensively and have had no degradation in the material so far. overall im very happy with it.

      @@davebloggs #1. What matters is that you are satisfied. I am also very satisfied. I have three pots and a frying pan, and a small Ohuhu stove inside (135 mm diameter). #2. The cooker works even better after using covers and reducers - DIY. It burns even longer, has more embers, does not dirty the pots, sparks do not burn the tarp / hammock... #3. Structural degradation is not visible - it must be an electron microscope! But the rust is visible - look from the inside. #4. I also have a large version of it (200 mm) - this is a challenge.

    if wind does not dictate direction the smoke always tend to lean to nearest vertical object. Try placing log of wood vertically near the campfire and feel the difference. cheers

      The smoke always head to the low pressure so you are right a good size log close ish to the fire might just help. I will give that a try next time im out, thanks for that.

    Zip firestarter is the best for this and pellets. Lights in heavy rain too. I break up a bar into sugar-cube size. Also, if you have a tripod cooking grate…or an adjustable stake-the-ground type… A few inches above that fire with a solid pan acts as a heat deflector, and you can sit around the stove like a campfire.

      Im in Canada , I have done a few videos on the stove its a great stove for sure and lives in my pack now as it fits very nicely inside my pots etc. butane stoves etc can run out of fuel but as long as i have a few twigs i can cook food and boil water which is very important when out in the mountains. thank you for watching much appreciated.

    I have just got one for Christmas but not used it. How long does it take to cool down?

    • @davebloggs
      @davebloggs 9 месяцев назад

      Where I live about 30 seconds in the snow, but in none snowy conditions it looses heat very fast, a separate all the parts and the base cools in seconds the fire basket and top double wall allow a few minute's and all is good. you will love this stove. if using sticks stand them upright or better still run them on pellets. have fun , they are a great addition to any backpack kit.

    I cut a 6X6 inch square of carbon felt (welding cloth) to put under the stove. It protects the ground or any other surface the stove is placed on. The square weighs very little and can be folded or wadded up. It also keeps the jingly parts from making noise.

    • @davebloggs
      @davebloggs 9 месяцев назад

      Now that is a good idea I like that I will give it a go. I do have a baking tray that I used for fires if im in an area that is to dry etc but the cloth idea would work very well and be much lighter I will give that a go.

    • @remirez2k3

    What does the ground underneath the stove look like afterwards, is it scorched? I have a Silverfire stove, which is similar to yours but it has a heat shield. Despite that, mine still scorces the ground. I imagine it would be worse with your version.

    • @davebloggs
      @davebloggs 10 месяцев назад

      Yes it can leave burn marks from the bits of charcoal that fall through but there is not any real amounts of heat as such. I treat it as any other fire when it comes to flammable material underneath.

    • @chuckberg5585
      @chuckberg5585 Месяц назад

      Honestly does that really even matter? The point of the design is to cook effectively and efficiently with readily available fuel not to protect the ground!😂

      just cuz i dont produce doesnt mean i cant have valid comments, or useful constructive criticism. I meant the camera was rather far from the stove, and that it's probably why the original commenter said he cant see anything.
