Great review. Thank you
Never heard of those pens. Nice to know they exists. You did a great job on those pieces
Great tutorial! I intend to do some small drawings everyday starting in January. I already have a little sketchbook and I will definitely try those techniques in it. Thank you so much. I hope your channel will grow faster! You are a great teacher and artist
Thank you! Just scratching the surface as yet, the more subs I get the better it will get hopefully x
Hi John, so good to see you revisited these pastels. I picked up a brand new set on Vinted for just £2 and find they are perfect for overlaying details, such as fine grasses. While I wouldn’t want to do large areas with them as they are quite firm in comparison to softer alternatives which are much easier to blend, I’m so glad to have found them. And I agree it’s also a great idea to revisit and try new techniques or papers as these can make a huge difference. I guess the fun of trying different brands is to find which works best for each.
Very useful review. Thank you
I love your down to earth videos! Thank you! I realise I need to improve my drawing skills overall.
You are so welcome! I will help with that, I am only just touching the surface but will do more as we move on!
@johnsartmaterialguidestuto7757 Brilliant!
Thanks for taking the time to revisit these! I have the 25 set plus few more colors, but I haven't really used them in any paintings. My brother in law has done some fantastic landscapes with the Expressionist and Specialist oil pastels and really enjoys using them.
Thanks for the update John. Those crayon holders look great. They'd certainly keep my hands and fingers much cleaner! In OZ I can only find these in packs of 4 at Temu, and I'd rather not go there. Can you remember which Amazon that you ordered them from? If not that's fine. Take care.
I got mine from ebay theres loads on there! Temu is ok, i have had lots of stuff from there, heres a link although uk ebay i.ebayimg.com/images/g/Md0AAOSwXe5nOjTt/s-l500.webp
I feel like I missed half the conversation 😂 are they for when your pastel gets too short?

I am going through your channel and I just found out that you do soft pastel as well. That is great!
Soft pastel WAS my main medium. I do around 20 mediums at last count lol, the videos have only been any good since this MAY as I had no idea what to do!
Great idea…Thank you.
I've been in the process of swatching and adding paper wrapper to my Holbein oil pastels for the past few days. I might invest in some of these in the future, though most of the oil pastels I own don't bother me too much when they get on my hands. I just keep baby wipes at hand.

Hi John, I also dismissed these oil pastels. I bought some Mont Marte Premium oil pastels. I have persisted and experimented, with these, and using your techniques, feel like I will produce an ok art work with them. 🤞🤞🤞 ❤ The silicone shapers are a great tool. I've watched your videos very carefully, particularly when using these. Jacksons have their own versions of these. I think the Mont Marte are the same as the Artecho ones that you have used. The colour names are exactly the same and the colours look the same. Is a comparison video possible? The MM premium are available in set sizes of 24 and 48 and are very cheap here in OZ. The reason I am trying these Mont Marte ones, is so that I can use them as a base for future pictures and then do the final touches with more expensive pastels. I also need to practise my techniques, and experiment with different papers before using the expensive pastels on their own. Your oil pastel tutorials are the best that I have found on RUclips. Thanks for imparting all your knowledge and skills. I'm looking forward to your next Craypas piece. Take care. Liz ❤
I meant Mont Marte Signature Oil Pastels.
Thank you so much for the kind words. I am glad I am doing something right. I will look at the Monte Mart and the Artecho. There is def some resemblance but I will test to see.

Thank you Christine........all depends on the success of the channel but HOPEFULLY it will all come right. So glad you have subscribed and thank you!
I can make you better at art. Just follow this series of tutorials to improve your art all based on Ballpoint pens which will elevate you in so many ways!
At the eleventh hour I decided to add a Butterfly to this pastel pencil picture. Here's how I did it!
Thank you for your videos! My son bought me a set of Mont Marte Signature pastels (48) in July so I am truly a beginner. Since then I bought a set of Mont Marte Natural Hues (24). My question is what should I do when I run out of a colour? I already have the sets of 6 in black and white from Paul Rubens. Sennelier and Holbein pastels are available to buy individually, is this the only option?
Hiya, yes the only option is to buy single sticks from suppliers that do them. However, Monte mart do theirs so cheap it might be worth looking to buy a set for not much more than you would buy a single colour from the likes of Sennillier.....then you have many more bases covered for replacements. If you did decide to buy singles then my suggestion would be to buy the Caran Dache Neopastels . Artecho are another brilliant option to buy a set as they are as cheap as chips and very good pastels. A set of 72 is only £14.99......I recommend these to beginners as they are so brilliant and cheap too, also they are lightfast which in y opinion makes them professional!
Thank you for your prompt reply! Amazon will deliver Artecho 72 set tomorrow! This time I will do a colour swatch, I didn't know about that with my other sets.
Good advice - thank you
Thanks Dave. I hope I have persuaded you to subscribe!
Very helpful information! thank you.
Glad it was helpful! I hope I have managed to have you as a subscriber.
Yes, I'm subscribed, thanks for all!
What is the difference between pastels a l'ecu and pastels a l'huile? Thanks for the video!
Lecu are SOFT pastels (chalky kind) where as Lhuile are Oil Pastels. I hope I have persuaded you to subscribe....lts to come!
@@johnsartmaterialguidestuto7757 How did I not notice this before? 😅 Thanks for the clarification! I'm already subscribed to the channel. Good luck!
Assuming you have them, could you do a guide on the 3 types of Cray-Pas (Junior, Expressionist, Specialist)? I'm curious about how the Expressionist and Specialist compare to each other.
I don't have the Junior or specialist as I have avoided them due to the fact I have seen them on other reviews and do not think they are any good IMO. I do however, have the Expressionist as I believe they were the first ones I ever bought!
I will have a go at drawing this whilst watching the video. One question (so far) : what are you using to blend the branches? I thought it might be a paper stump but, clearly, it's not.
Hi, thank you I hope I have persuaded you to subscribe, I cannot see every subscriber! If you look at my video on blender tools you will see it there. it is a colour shaper!...this video is only part one in real time ,I have not published pt 2 other than a timelapes so far.
@johnsartmaterialguidestuto7757 thank you! I have subscribed and, as a complete beginner to art and oil pastels, I am finding your videos very helpful.
@@Burmilla44 My pleasure!
What's the difference between using a product like this as opposed to something like ModPodge? I'm at the end of my art budget for the time being, so I'd like to use what I have, but don't want to ruin anything by experimenting. Thanks John, have a peaceful day.
Hi Ruby, in all honesty not ever having used it on Oil Pastel work I cannot say! However, in my minds eye I cannot see any reason why it would be entirely different other than consistency and a possibility that the Modge Podge could do something to the Pastel to make it smear or melt. I would test it on a piece of sample Oil Pastel first to see what it does. regards John
@@johnsartmaterialguidestuto7757 Thanks John! I tried it, and it works! There was no change in color at all, and the pastel didn't move after applying. The only thing that wasn't so good is that it was Gloss-Lustre and I'd rather have matte. But I'll use up what I have. I'm not good enough with the pastels to worry about it anyway. lol Thanks for replying so fast. Have a great day.
@@rubyfisch5077 Thats great ton hear. If you have some. Perhaps the addition of a little water may matt it down a bit?
Very helpful! Thank you very much!
Glad it was helpful! i hope i have managed to get you to subscribe !
Thank you so much for this! I've had a bottle of the Talens varnish for probably close to a year and haven't tried it out yet. I think I'll give it a go soon.
That has a very nice finish. I've only ever used spray fixative, I might have to try some of that. I have four cats and two dogs and I use tweezers to get the hair off before spraying and sometimes while spraying my pictures.
This is my favorite review.. you have all the set. That was a wonderful painting❤ I really like the 120 set. May I know what paper would you recommend for beginner. Thank you so much😊
Thank you! I have a video on choice of paper type but will be sharing my own favourite when I reach 100 Subscribers......I hope I have managed to get your subscription!
What varnish do you recommend?
Personally I like the Talons bottled varnish but there is a knack to using it. Not sure if I did a video on it but I will if I haven't already.....I think I was waiting until I had a pic to varnish to do it! Sennilier Oil Pastel varnish is also very good but is different in it's look. I haven't used just standard varnishes although I am sure some would work but if I can get the Oil Pastel variety I don't see the need to risk something that isn't specific. Please subscribe if you haven't already Kelly!
Right that’s it, I’ve just ordered 2 million cotton buds from Amazon. Thanks
lol, make sure they are quite stiff and not too soft and come adrift so to speak! Cheaper is normally better! Please subscribe if you haven't already
It's fantastic watching it come to life. Thank you for sharing!
Thank you, John! It's always fun to get a glimpse into someone else's process. I look forward to watching part 2.
thank you very very much!

Your art is really amazing and you are very kind, you sound like a genuinely nice person. Thank you for the video ! :)
What an amazing and kind comment. I hope you like my further vids as they come.
You can also buy pastel holders! And switch them in and out.
yes I know, mostly somewhat expensive but I have a cheaper option which will be doing a vid on!
Ah! I did a watercolour evening course, liked it but life & work took over. After Covid I started „quilling“, bookfolding & origami, then re started my older hobby of watercolour. After watching utube videos, I learned to paint. I like watercolour pencils, pencil, charcoal, pastels in fact many art forms. I‘m glad to find an artist who also uses different mediums. I thought my interest in many different mediums was peculiar. I‘d like to see watercolour pencil work, & charcoal. Thanks
What room temperature do you think is ideal for using oil pastels? Its winter here in Canada and Im keeping the house at 18°C. Im just waiting for my new Sennelier to be delivered. Ive been fighting my craypas recently and gave up. Do you think my problems of crumbling, not blending, and pilling could be due to the temperature? And (sorry for all the questions) do you ever heat (hair dryer and such) your oil pastels before using them?
Hi Catherine, I would say the low 20's upwards is where the Senneilier would start to cause problems although I cannot swear to it. However, it was a very hot summers day when I used them as suggested in the video. Re the Cray Pas....if you mean the Expressionist ones then they are not great to be honest so that could be the problem but if the actual Cray Pas ,I believe they are vintage pastels so have they dried out over the years......not too sure about that with out knowing a hit more tbh x
18c seems to be quite cool to me but that shouldnt affect pilling etc etc but just make pastels harder. I havent used a hair drier yet and do not ever heat the pastels ....all my work is done as pastel ONLY!
I was able to grab the 72 set used (barely) on Amazon for just over 100 USD (about 77 GBP) and have augmented it steadily. There is a luminosity and painterly quality that the Sennelier have that is different from other oil pastels.
The cleaning & storage tips are really useful. Luckily I‘ve put them all back in their boxes. Now I‘ll wipe them again. I now only have to practice more. Thanks.
I have Sennelier the tin, & I like their colours. And, that one could buy 2 nd hand pastels. Especially the expensive ones.Thanks. Take care after Covid!
Pity I couldn’t hear you.
Yes I will have to re do this one.....camera settings awry!
@@johnsartmaterialguidestuto7757 I brought my Haiya‘s out of the cold, they weren’t as greasy, so I returned them to the cold. Thanks for your tip.
@@valeriegehling4358 Excellent! I am glad I helped. You will notice in my latest video about Sennilier Oil Pastels that I said that I didnt like the Haiyas. This was an unfortunate turn of phrase and I will be correcting this as I do like them but they are not like the Sennilier.......
Very good tutorial! I'm new to oil pastels, and so far I'm loving them. But I put the cart before the horse and tried to do a picture of the northern lights (aurora borealis) and I ended up having to use SO much pastel because I wasn't blending right. This will help me a lot, thanks!
My pleasure, I hope I have persuaded you to subscribe!
@@johnsartmaterialguidestuto7757 Yes I did after watching the first video of yours that I saw. I like that you give such good information in a concise manner. Have a peaceful day.
@@rubyfisch5077 That's so lovely to hear as I feel I waffle and sound awful lol, I do try my best though.
Awesome
Hi, My question is can you help me, my Paul Rubens sticks are sweaty/ oily? As my other oil pastels ( Myungo, Sennelier, & Kodi ) are dry to touch they’re messy. I‘ve put a few sachets of silicate in my box but it’s not helped. Have you any tricks up your sleeve? Thanks
I am guessing they may be the Haiya? I would rub them off with a baby wipe ideally or non lint tissue/cloth. Then keep them somewhere cool not too cold or too warm.....sillcate wont help as its oil not water.....they are a bit temperamental!
@ Yep! They are Haiya, our room was until yesterday cool, but, I‘ll wipe them, I‘ve kitchen paper also as an extra in box, as suggested & when not in use store in coolest room. Thanks. And, take silicate out.
@@valeriegehling4358 You MAY find that they MAY go white but that.s nothing to worry about. Just wipe them off and use as normal. If they lose too much Oil they may go crumbly but that's in sever circumstances. I have a video on it re my Mungyo titled "Can I use my damaged Oil Pastels"
@@johnsartmaterialguidestuto7757 Have watched, I would have been sad if my box of Mungyos had arrived like yours did. Thanks.
