2:55.41 - Mazda Miata - Chin Track Days - Ozarks International Raceway
Trekked it 10+ hours from Texas to Missouri for a Chin Track Days event at Ozarks International Raceway. Although it was quite the haul, it was absolutely worth it!
They call this track the American Nurburgring, and it’s a very fitting nickname. The combination of immense elevation changes, and high speed, blind corners makes it the most exhilarating and challenging track I’ve driven to date. In addition to the blind corners, the walls aren’t very far, which means a lot of commitment is required to drive this track at the limit.
It’s demanding physically too. You’re hustling most of the lap - even the front straight isn’t really a straight. But when you get it all right, wow is it rewardin...

At an event at Hallett back in March, I went thru T7 at 85 mph when my right real wheel broke. The wheel went underneath the car, sending it up in the air. Since my GoPro didn't record my 2:11.93 lap, here's the next fastest lap it did record - a 2:13.32. I ran it while *trying* to keep up with the white Corvette C7 in front. Ironically enough, that's the same car I was chasing when I ran the 2:11 lap the session before. Bonus footage at the end of me harassing a 997 GT3RS for the 5 seconds I could keep up with it.

Another instructor asked me to tag alone for a 'lead and follow' exercise with a student, and I'm glad he did because what ensued was a blast of a session. We all ended up being closely matched with one another, and raced each other hard, even when all of our tires started getting hot/greasy. tons of fun!

20th Annual Miatas at Hallett. Saturday we ran clockwise, and Sunday we ran counter-clockwise. This was my personal best going counter-clockwise - a 1:31.22. I was running on heat cycled Nankang AR-1s, so I had to be pretty conservative on some of my braking points. I'm looking forward to running next year's event with new rubber, and see how much I can improve.

While racing hard with a fellow instructor ahead in the blue NC miata, the rear end stepped out on me going through T16-T17 (MSRH CCW). It was a hot, Houston summer day and the tires were getting greasy. I pinned the throttle and countersteered to catch the slide, and even managed to still hit the apex lol. disclaimer: passenger is not a student, just a good friend.

it truly is. it’s a challenging track, but so fun.
This happened to me while running 80+ mph going through Big Bend. I’ve replaced my hubs with Miata Hubs and have not had a problem since.
And this is when a beautiful bond of friendship happend with "Asshole" Bob and Jose "half wheel" Garcia

How does this happen? I was told by an experienced drift club that this won’t happen unless you hit a rock or something
wheel failure. spokes on aluminum wheels can develop micro cracks and over time will grow until failure. this is why it’s important to inspect wheels that see track duty.

thank you! it's just a GoPro 8 on 1080p 120fps on linear. I've found the linear angle captures the sense of speed well.

As someone that’s never driven RWD or been on a track, what was the error here, what could’ve been done to save it, and what is the best method to save a car that’s over steering on corner exit like that?
He took too much curb and unsettled the car, causing it to oversteer as he stayed on the throttle. He did a great job recovering it by (I’m assuming) locking up the tires (braking hard) and putting opposite lock into the steering wheel until the car started to rotate back, at which point he let off the brake and straightened the wheel back up. In terms of saving it, his best bet would’ve been to ease off throttle immediately after going over the curb to minimize wheelspin. Edit: just rewatched the video and you can see/hear the revs jump up as he goes over the curb and unsettles the car, indicating wheelspin
@@curiouslyeternal spot on! that's exactly what happened. cold tires easily spun when I unsettled the car on the curbing.

Wow! I had a similar experience on cold tires on the first lap almost kissing COTA's pit wall out of turn 20! Nice Job! I swear my sideways drift would never end, though I'm sure was less than 3 secs.
