Project X - a real banger of a knife by Rick Hinderer
Просмотров 20021 день назад
Rick Hinderer did it again, and created a hard use knife that is so ergonomic and an evolution of the brand. It addresses so many of the complaints of previous models - it's easier to disassemble, the hardware is captative (the pivot and standoffs aren't free spinning) and the tool to break down the knife is included.

Wow that's cool looking!!
@@valrai2752 it is. The best time to go is when or after a heavy rain ... That's when the water really gets going
So stunning!! Magical almost.
Love this 2nd part as well! I swear we have the same taste/preferences (but for the fact that I tend to prefer internal milling for weight relief - except on Medfords...love them heavy). Nice choices, and great collection. Look forward to part III.👍🤙
@MitchBollig thank you sir. I have it filmed but I just have to edit it. I certainly do love a heavy knife when I can carry one, but there are times I need a light small knife, so that works too. I think the majority of the market prefers something light and smaller. Look at what happened to ZT ... They went small and light 😂
You need the actual AD20. There’s a big difference…
@@christopherbrody9926 I have that one as well, but today I'm in the office and the 20.5 is easier to carry in my monkey suit. Check out collection videos on my playlist. Thanks for watching and commenting.
With they came with a hollow ground blade
@@Din4747 I've only seen them with a saber / flat grind, but I don't see everything that ever comes out
Very helpful review, thanks. For $550, I think I will hold off until the double-clutch, flipper tab placement and clip issues are resolved, if ever.
@gregoryreed8567 i would agree. And I hated the opening for releasing the frame lock. He just released a 3.5" version of this knife and he talked about fixing many of those issues, but I haven't purchased one yet, and I may never. I just don't carry this knife and I have so many that I love to carry already, and I don't see where he is doing anything differently than anyone else. At that price point there needs to be something compelling about a knife for me at this point. Thanks for watching and commenting!
Magnacut will rust. I left a $300 MKC in fresh, clean sinkwater for a week.. big mistake. Even my cheap steak knives can withstand that.
@@sinepari9160 interesting. I know that even the most stainless steels will rust where something was etched into the steel, like the name of the brand or the model name or steel type. Did the rust occur where it was laser etched? I haven't immersed my knife in water for a week, but it's been in plenty of rain storms and swimming with me and used for food prep and not cleaned for a long time and there's no rust.
@@appalachianadvrider No, some other videos got me thinking. I had it soaking with some other silverware that may have had a number of things on them from bbq sauce to peanut butter to no telling what else, but it was just in a plastic tupperware container with regular faucet water. I think that perhaps some food substance on the other stuff may have contributed. Fortunately, it was just surface rust/patina that can be polished out, but I will definitely be more careful with a knife this expensive!
@@sinepari9160 lots of times other metals will contact your blade (like when it was sharpened, at the thumb stud, or etched, or at the pivot from the washer etc) and those metals will rust and leech onto your knife steel. What knife did you see this happening to?
Thanks for your video
@@AeratingThatching no thank you. Without viewers there would be no need to make these videos. I love sharing my passion for knives and taking about them with others, so thanks for watching and commenting. Seriously
Great video my friend! Hinderer is also my favorite brand. I’ve had just about everything out there in the production knife world over the years and nothing speaks to me the way Hinderers do.
@andrew5117 For me is a well balanced knife for what I like to carry a knife for. When I'm not looking to do a specific task, then I like to carry one of my Hinderers. But if I'm breaking down boxes all day, I'll use a different knife, or if I'm doing food prep, I'll use a different knife ... Thanks for watching and commenting! Appreciate it
Killer content man! So my favorite users currently are my large Chris Reeve Sebenza 31 inlay, the large Inkosi inlay , and large plain jane inkosi, all drop points. Also the Strider SnG Hybrid GG, the Microtech Socom Elite (clip point), the Hinderer project x, and my newest, the Terrain 365 STS-AT in Terravantium. My favorite steels are s45vn, elmax, and 3V. Cheers
@@the_swinging_axe thank you for the compliment. I see you also prefer a larger size knife, and your selections are very good. We live in a great time to love knives. Thanks for watching and commenting!
I agree with you - the Compadre is a winner on all fronts - shape, grind, steel, heat treat, size, balance/weight...Kunwu is doing things so right that they may be considered "the new Reate". Thanks AAR. 👊🤙
They are really doing stuff right. I have several of their knives and have been impressed by all of them. As a camper this knive (and the Padre) is just a perfect overall knife. Thanks again for watching and commenting. I finally got around to editing part 2 of this series and it should be posted soon.
Can I buy this from you? 🙏
@@owenwestphal623 this life is still available for sale in the market, but I'm not selling mine. Love this thing. Thanks for watching and commenting
i just bought this and i'm a big fan. I think for me this is my end all be all knife, I can get rid of everything else haha. Took me a little time to get the deployment perfect. As a skinny framelock the positions where ur not putting pressure on the lock bar are limited. Even middle finger flicking I have to position correctly or it's too much pressure on the detent.
@@Krozin yeah it's a great knife. I didn't have much of an issue positioning my 2XX hands on it but maybe our detent strengths are different, so that is a possibility. But it's a great knife if you need something small and light. I do wish they provided more of a finger guard / feedback on how high you shouldn't choked up on it, but that's only a nitpick complaint. I'm glad you enjoyed it and thank you for watching and commenting
I like the manix 2 because in left handed and it can be used. Definitely has a bit of a learning curve and a fair bit of a break in. Took mine around 1000 ooen and closes to break in. I dont like that you basically have to use the pocket clip as a brace to close the knife. But i do like it. Not my favorite but not disliked ether. Does get pocket time when i go hiking or anything out doors as it is a very solid and strong knife. But i do get your points. I never flick, i just roll it out. Flicking seems silly and draws attention to your self in public. So any flicking problems are moot. Any ways good video.
@@outdoorsythings2573 yeah sometimes I get a knife and I just don't carry it, and it's not always the knifes fault. I have so many great knives that something really has to be special to me to take up some pocket time. When I was getting back into knives this Manix was praised by the community, so I purchased it. But I hated the rough G10 and then I got a other knife that I liked more etc. Thanks for watching and commenting

Waiting for mine to arrive! I went full DLC
@@joewhitehead961 you will love it if you like a bruiser
I feel like Jon Sorensen perfected this style with the evo ckf oem.
@@smokedogg19821 it certainly is very reminiscent of that design lol. I believe this company "pays homage" to lots of different designs out there (I'm being kind). The Gringo reminds me of a Zermino Tyr, the Tao reminds me of a Sebenza .... But then again, there's only so many things you can do with a knife. Regardless of all of that, there are things different between the two, and I really do love this knife. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Imo the warncliff is the ultimate self-defense blade because the cutting pressure goes all the way to the tip. I finally got an xm-24 in December in the skinny warncliff variation, and i love it.
@smokedogg19821 Michael Janich, the designer of Yojimbo knife variants, has a great video on the subject, and he is an expert, so I'm going to have to say I agree! And it's a great box opener / utility blade shape. You got yourself a great knife and hopefully you will never have to use it in that capacity, but it's there just in case. Thanks for watching and commenting!
did you have to do anything to make the blade tolerances to where it falls on its own or do they do that after being broken in?
@@nigeldalton532 this knife didn't need to be broken in to fall shut. It's a lot like a gravity knife once you release the lock by pulling back on it and tipping it in the desired direction. The action on this knife is really good. It sounds very industrial.
Do you think this knife is really worth the price? Or maybe there are better options for the same or lower price?
@@Beskar181 I don't normally talk about value. It's hard to say to someone that spending $600 is a good value. But when you compare it to other American made knives in it's class, it's not very overpriced. A McNees Mac 2 is around or over $600, and this knife blows it away in my opinion. A Hinderer XM18 is $425, and if you buy the titanium scale, add another $200 to make that an equivalent knife to this one, so this is cheaper. I personally love this AD20, so I'm a fan. That shark lock is amazing and really strong ... It's almost as strong as a fixed blade, and you can't say that about many folders. But you can get a $20 knife that cuts paper.
Just got mine. Love it, but have had to tighten the pivot twice already. Really bad for a nearly $400 knife.
@@MrEric0822 that's is common with many expensive knives, but unusual for Quiet Carry. Nothing that blue thread lock can't fix. Maybe they forgot to add some during assembly? Mine is still factory tightened and I've opened it a lot. But I'm glad you love it as well. It's a great knife. Thanks for watching and commenting.
@ I added loctite last night. I could tell there was none on there from factory. Same happened with my Waypoint. I know how to fix the issue, but it requires knowledge and tools on my end right out of the box. Shouldn’t be that way for a high-end product. People who didn’t know what to do would have the pivot fall out. If it’s a known issue (which it is) they should add loctite during assembly or they should fix the issue somehow.
@@MrEric0822 no argument there. At a certain price point we expect more, and we should.
Are they comfortable to use?
Hmph...I thought you have been carrying this guy recently - on your EOY collections you were auto-pilot front flipping motion on many varieties 😉
@MitchBollig yeah the Padre model is my favorite knife of all my knives, though this Compadre is a great size for my office monkey suit. I just ordered the version with a cross bar lock yesterday. I usually prefer smooth scales, especially on a knife that has a lot of contouring on it, so I went with their last Orange Peel texture in stock. It was sitting on their website for a long time and I figured I'd take it off their hands. Can't wait to try it
Did you change the thumbstuds?
@@WillLiam32 no sir. This is the second version of the Atom with supposedly better studs. They work just fine for me. Thanks for watching and connecting!
I agree, this is an opus knife for Rick. And thinking about the "triad" of Mick Strider, Chris Reeve, and Rick Hinderer...Reeve seeks perfection by improving the finite details on a small number of models, Hinderer holds rather steady on existing models (including pricing) to keep the customized lego world alive and he got right almost everything that held back his tougher-use brand knives with the PX, and Strider just found a way to increase the prices (seemingly by decreasing the production, but also updating some materials to be fair ;-) Thanks!
@@MitchBollig I want to say I dislike the man but you have to give it to him ... He makes a quality knife! I would put Les George at the top tier level, but maybe he wasn't making knives when they came up with that Trinity thing? Plus Mr George is just a really nice guy. Thanks again for watching and commenting
Holy crap - your ZT collection is fantastic, some old and new standards! 1) Thanks for breaking these 5 up - I get spots of time that are not linear to catch up on the 80-100 channels I sub to. 2) I washed a Hogue Deka after a camping trip to WY (but it popped out in the dryer and I was like "WTF is that...oops"), so that made me laugh, and 3) I see some swaps and trades between us in the future because we have similar tastes and hand sizes...and there were some you were like, "I don't like this...I don't carry this". ✌in 2025, and thanks again - I know how much labor it is to make these collections (which is why I all but gave in to doing them in 2023).
@@MitchBollig I figured it made a lot more sense to break these into bite-sized videos because not a lot of people have an hour and a half to watch one long video. And yeah I've purchased knives thinking I would love them, and then for whatever reason, I just don't, or something else is just better than it that's in the same category. When you have so many good knives to choose from it's just hard to decide which one you want to carry over another great knife. At this point in time a knife has to be pretty spectacular for me to be carrying it over something else. While I've never traded knives I would be up for it if there is something that is mutually interesting enough to swap. Thanks again for watching and commenting
It's like I was watching a collection of my knives. 😅 So much overlap with mine - very cool - I love the stories behind them.

@@mstuehler I love the kind words ... Thank you. I started this channel to share my thoughts about knives, and it's not about making quick videos .... It's about talking about what I think. There are lots of channels that tell jokes or make videos under 15 minutes that have a much larger audience, but I'm just doing what I want to do. I don't make a dime off of this and put a lot of time into it, but I am trying to provide information. Of course we all have our personal bias and I try and make that clear in the video. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Man - this one was chock full of bangers! Love QC - one of the few Chinese makers that lead with washers versus just reverting to bearings for good action. Love what you did with the SHF - added comfort and looks! If I were ever to actually carry an XM-24, I'd have to do washers (or suffer the cuts of that guillotine. Thx!🤙😎
@@MitchBollig thanks for watching and your comments. Not to get technical, Quiet Carry knives are manufactured in Taiwan, but I hear what you are saying. I might have to switch the XM24 to washers ... Great idea. I had an Eklipse on washers but I switched back to bearings because of the action, but the 24 has such a heavy blade maybe the action would be great?!?
@@appalachianadvrider Oh thanks! I honestly didn't remember about QC being in Taiwan. As for the XM-24...I can tell you from experience it won't get great on the opening (until probably 5000 openings when the washers smooth out), but it will definitely save the knuckle of your thumb. 🤜🤛
@@MitchBollig thanks for the info ... Appreciate it.
Knice! I also take the Spydiechef more often than other salt series for camping (the Caribbean used to be my go to) but that blade, thin carry, pinch bolster at the front of the scales/frame, and the fact it's on washers make it a can't lose choice for a folder while camping. Thanks for the vid!✌️

Yeah there are a couple reasons. The 3" Mac 2 sliced my hand when I reached into my pocket to get it because of its weak detent. The 3.5" one is a guillotine. The pocket clip sucks and I get douchebag vibes from the maker. He made a different clip to replace the sucky one, but it's going to cost you. When they changed the lockbar design from a perfect spacing to having a huge gap, the maker was saying it's a better design. That automatic knife had a horrible point to it - it wasn't even pointy. These knives are almost $600 and I feel for what you are getting it's overpriced. I don't know - I'm just not a real big fan. Have lots of bad tastes in my mouth, even though I know the community loves this brand. I don't. I normally don't make value statements, but to top it off, I feel there are so many other knives that are a better value by far. It's just my opinion and I am in the minority and that's fine with me lol. Of the three knives that I purchased, they all had issues. Thanks for watching. I am going to tell you my unfiltered opinion and that the value I hope to bring to people that watch.
@appalachianadvrider Yeah man totally understand that! I hate soft detents! For a 600 dollar knife that's a freaking deal breaker!
Just got my black version today. The only negative I can find is that with my very large hands(I'm 6'7") my fingers catch the frame lock and apply pressure. That pressure adds quite a bit to the pressure needed to thumb stud deploy. So much so that I wouldn't recommend a slow rolling the knife open. It can slip and send your fingers straight to the blade.
@@chrishall1407 I hear that. I wear a 2XX sized glove and I'm concerned about grabbing it too high. For me I can flick it open just fine, but I certainly have to reposition my hand and I understand what you're saying. A little more real estate would have been good, but then it wouldn't be a "gentleman's" sized knife maybe?
@appalachianadvrider I guess the lct will be the next purchase. I had to get this first because I already have a lot of drifts. 😂
@@chrishall1407 love the LCT, especially using the reverse flick. I can't really thumb flick it (though I've seen others do it) but I can slow roll it out. I would say if you hate a hole opening then you might want to think about it. I love that it's much heavier and thicker in the handle with the contouring.
